First time at Southside Tavern today at my friend's recommendation. On Sunday they have a brunch menu which featured items such as (not a complete list) peanut butter and fluff french toast, corned beef benedict and an over medium fried egg atop fried chicken w/biscuits with sausage gravy (sounds heavenly, but I'll take one bite and need a bypass) along with a limited lunch menu on the back. Service - I thought it was good. I wanted a brunch type of drink but not a bloody mary or mimosa so she suggested a bellini w/peach schnapps which they made light on the schnapps b/c I don't like 'sweet' drinks - it was so tasty I had two. We started w/the philly cheese steak egg rolls - I thought they were really good. I ordered the apple and goat cheese salad which has candied walnuts and craisins (I picked off 3/4 of them) w/a white balsamic vinaigrette. I added grilled chicken and enjoyed the salad very much. My friends had the PBF french toast and my other friend had a greek salad w/steak tips - both enjoyed their selections. I have to be honest. I wish I'd placed two orders of the philly cheese steak egg rolls for myself, driven home at break neck speed, and hidden myself away to eat them, not sharing. Guess it just means I have to go back. My wife and I come here at least 2 or 3 times a month, if not more. Everything here is really really good. For apps their bruschetta is great, but their steak and cheese egg rolls are even better. For entrees I've had mostly everything, although I usually stick with the chicken Dominico. But seriously, everything is awesome, and it's pretty reasonably priced. This place is stellar! The steak tips are the best I've had in Boston. No meal here will leave you dissatisfied! I've tried the steak tips, various salads, custom pizza, buffalo wontons and much more...I RECOMMED THEM ALL HIGHLY!! The ambiance is great & the staff is friendly. During nice days for lunch they'll open a wall of windows which gives a nice patio feel without physically being outside. There's limited parking the front, but more available around the side and on the street. A must eat for lunch or dinner. read more

I had a later dinner here with a friend a few weeks after they opened the Braintree location. We shared two apps- the fried pickles, which was a HUGE portion served with a dipping sauce...very tasty, crispy, and well-battered- and the nachos appetizer, also gigantic but fairly standard. I did enjoy the pico de gallo on top, better than your average salsa. It was our waitress's first night on the job but you would have never guessed. Very polite and personable. Th only issue we had was that it took a while to get our check at the end of the night. Another night I tried to come here for drinks but the bar was just too crowded so we left. This place seems like a nice addition to the South Shore bar scene, but I guess you have to get there early! I'll try again. read more

We were seated for probably about 10 minutes before we just walked out because even though we were passed by the wait staff numerous times, we were not once acknowledged, even to say, "we'll be right with you." Braintree was lacking a Great spot for casual drinks with terrific food. Southside Tavern has accomplished that in a Big Way. Terrific Bar & Wait staff with some great specials to watch for. Hands down the best coconut shrimp I have ever had. Always some entertainment going on with Great Trivia with the largest prize I have ever seen. DJs and Acoustic musicians every week. read more

I go here quite often (I'm a trivia fanatic and their Trivia Tuesdays is great) and this is a quality sports pub. The food is good and the menu is diverse enough. The Buffalo Chicken Wantons are unique, and equally awesome. My only complaint, and the reason it doesn't get a 4, is because of the service. Over all, the staff is just blah. They waitresses and bartenders seem unenthused, as if they'd rather be anywhere else in the world than at work. Also, they have an ongoing 20 oz. Coors Light draft special for $2.50. One night, my table of 5 ordered 5 CL drafts. The waitress came back and said they were out of it, there was a new keg but it was warm and foaming so it'd be like an hour. We asked if we could get Bud Light or anything else for the same price and she said no. A - kegs don't get delivered to bars warm; B - customer service should come first. If it were my bar, it would have been a round free on me. Otherwise, it's a pretty nice hangout with solid grub. I'll definitely be back. I've been twice now. The first time I had a double pork chop special. It was SPECTACULAR!!!! The second time was a couple weeks ago. I went for the NFL Sunday Ticket. I had the Buffalo Wings and they were VERY good! I have extremely high standards for wings. They could have been more bulky, but they were cooked very well (crispy is the only way, take note New England restauranteurs!!!!). The sauce was very good, and much more complex than you usually find in New England. Other New England restaurants/pubs: Red Hot by itself is not buffalo wing sauce!!!! Try a google search of "original anchor bar buffalo wing sauce" yields an authentic tasting sauce... not hard! Southside was a very good culinary experience!!! read more

I've come for brunch a few times so this'll be a brunch review. The food is tasty. They have fresh fruit and yogurt. They also have a guy manning an omelet station that's good as well. So why not 5 stars? The variety is slim. There's only about 5-6 choices. Excluding the fruit and bread section (standard for a brunch buffet). They also don't switch it up. The three times I've been, it's been exactly the same. Bacon, sausage, home fries, omelet station, Mac and cheese, and pancakes. That's it. If they changed it up every Sunday and/or offered a larger selection, it'd be perfect. read more

I love this place. Easy to say that I am a regular. I've tried so many things on the menu and really can't say that I've ever had a bad meal. I definitely have my favorites, the chicken sandwich, the california burger, the buffalo chicken nachos, I could go on. The food here is definitely better than any pub/tavern I've ever been too and the kicker is, its affordable. You don't break the bank coming here for dinner and drinks. I have come here several times over the years for various staff gatherings, etc. and previous to this recent experience, this place was a favorite and known/comfortable location to have our gatherings. I have been attempting to make and confirm a reservation for this upcoming week since last week. I have spoken to three different staff who reportedly "took down my reservation information" and reassured me that a manager would be in touch with me within the business day to confirm the reservation. I have called on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and again today to follow up as no one had returned my calls as promised. I had also attempted to send a facebook message to Southside to request/confirm the confirmation and was redirected to call the restaurant directly to confirm. I was finally able to confirm the reservation (or so I thought!) this evening only after calling for the fifth time and assertively asking to speak to a manager and confirm the reservation, highlighting that if they could not accommodate me, I needed to know this so I could look elsewhere for my party and that I had been promised a return call and had yet to receive one - I was just looking for a yes or a no. I was reassured that everything was all set and proceeded to inform my colleagues about the plans for Thursday. About two hours later, I received a call from ANOTHER staff person indicating that whoever confirmed my reservation "must have been mistaken" and that we could not be accommodated, but that we could "show up and try to get seating". I again asked to speak to the manager. A staff person named Ian got on the phone and I asked about why it had taken four days for someone to first confirm the reservation and then retract it within two hours? Here are the various responses I received: "We usually don't tell people yes or no to a reservation", "Friday is the last day of school for the kids", and my favorites, "We just tell people to come in and wait for a table so I am not sure why anyone took the information to begin with" & "If I had seen this request come through from the beginning I would have told you this". I referenced that I had spoken to three different staff who had reportedly written down my request for a reservation to give a manager, and not once were any of these pieces of information relayed to me, so voiced concern about 1) how they manage reservations and 2) If they don't take reservations as he shared, why were people (and several of them at that!) taking my info down on the "reservation request form" and where were those forms disappearing to? I'm also still confused why Friday being "the last day of school for kids" is relevant or even related to this. Anyhow, I'm perplexed and really displeased at how this played out and will NOT be using Southside moving forward for any events or personally. We've done a LOT of business there during the years so it's unfortunate that this took place. read more

We drove up from Pawtucket, RI to head to a Best Buy nearby to do some Christmas shopping and like many others, quickly got hungry from spending so much money. So we came to Yelp and found this tavern. The food was delicious. My girlfriend got the Mac & Cheese with buffalo chicken and it was probably the best Mac and cheese I've had at a restaurant. I got the California burger with sweet potato fries, the burger was a little over done and there should have been a bit more avocado on it if you ask me. The service was horrible. Immediately upon entering we were bombarded by a man asking us for an ID. Just to get into the place. I get why they might do this, but at the same time, we didn't plan on drinking, and a "hello" would have been nicer to greet us. We were then seated DIRECTLY in front of the door. So every time the door opened up, we would catch the cold air coming on. And the damn security guard who kept checking people's IDs, thought it was a good idea to keep opening the door to say goodbye to everyone and hold conversations WITH the door open. He didn't think about the customers behind him who's food was getting cold and who had to keep their coats on the whole night. Our waitress was MIA half the time, and wasn't very friendly at all to top it all off. If I were you, don't go here. We won't be heading back just because the service was horrible. This place scores points on things that more established (older) places seem to ignore. The vibe here is hip without being pretentious. Although they fall into the trap of seemingly required distractions such as trivia and (trivial) live music, the atmosphere is a great reflection of the 'pseudo yuppi-ness' that the Reagan-era babies have come to adopt on the south shore. A fantastic beer selection (at self-affirming prices!) and generally friendly and attractive staff. The menu is very standard American-cuisine. Keeping things simple without appearing to be basic. The only complaint I can reasonably offer is the set-up. It is restrictive in that the passageways are tight and generally occupied by patrons waiting for tables or standing awkwardly because they haven't been able to secure a seat at the bar. All in all this is a good place for nearly any casual social outing. Not too abrasive or niched to avoid on dates and not too intense to avoid gathering with friends. My boyfriend is working out in Braintree for a few months and when I go to visit we typically order out. One night when we were trying to decide where to order from, his buddy from work suggested Southside Tavern. Long story short, we were definitely not disappointed!!! The food is so delicious & the staff is so so kind! We ended up ordering from them a second time this week! looking at the menu, we were both saying "well if the meal we choose is anything like it was on Monday, it's going to be good!" and come to find out, it was! My boyfriend is now addicted to their Mac n' cheese w/ short rib and I am a very big fan of the chicken lettuce wraps 10/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND...looking forward to our next order! read more

Went in last night to have a drink with a friend. I'm a 21 year old female and look my appropriate age for reference. I ordered a margarita, mind you we were surrounding by people and most had drinks. It was a busy night. The crowd was mostly people my age. Some even appeared much younger than me and had drinks in their hands/at their tables. After the waitress was extremely rude, she took my ID and asked if I had anything else with my name on it. I gave her my debit card, she took both to be looked at by the bartender, still no issue. She comes back with the manager and he tells me they cannot serve me because my ID is fake. He insists for something else with my date of birth on it and I didn't have anything. I have eaten and drank here multiple times. My ID is brand new, gold star in the corner and all. Clearly, the staff is not adequate trained (including the manager) to check IDs. He even said to me "I'm not going to take it but we can't serve you." I told him he wasn't taking it period because it was my REAL ID. I was so shocked and humiliated that I walked out. As if I would waste my time going to Southside Tavern if I was underage.... Very disappointed. Stopped to get the buffalo chicken dip to go and got home to realize that the tiny take out container was about 1/4 of the way full. Not even an inch in. So, I called back and told the host the issue and went back to pick one up to discover it was yet again not even half full. I informed the host who simply said that is how they portion it. We went to Southside Tavern because it was the only thing we could find open on our way back to a friend's place, after a late concert. We only went the one time, and arrived after 1 am. The kitchen was long closed, but since we had asked about food they offered to make us a pizza anyway. We said yes, picked toppings, and it was done fairly quickly, delicious, and only $7.50. They had a free jukebox with good music (for us that means Florence and the Machine). My husband ordered a peach mojito that was the best mixed drink he says he ever had. Everyone was really, really nice even though we were still sitting there while they cleaned and closed up around us. The culture seemed cool - there was a lot of info up on the walls about a weekly trivia contest, and an older guy was doing tarot card readings for customers who were interested. The friends we were staying with said it's a great place that they go to often :) As we drove by it the next day, we saw that they open a wall of windows when the weather is good, so that people can sit inside but still be in the fresh air. read more

Went there on a Sunday afternoon and had our one year old with us, staff was soooooo accomodating, bringing a high chair right over...The chili as an app was outstanding, even had tortilla chips with it, wowzaa!!! I visited this establishment a couple weeks ago and was horrified by the treatment I received. I was unbelievably disappointed with the service by the staff and management. I asked four times for my waitress to turn up the volume on the music as one of my friends had played music on the jukebox. I did not think this request was out of line as the music had been much louder when the banter in the corner was louder than my table. Additionally, when I was told the bartenders had the remotes to control the music I went to the counter and the waitress behind the bar dismissed me by telling me she already turned the music up already. Clearly she was on the same page as Ian when it comes to customer service. I came in with friends and we ordered food and drinks and IAN was a disappointment to say the least. He is RUDE. He actually said to me when I requested four times from my waitress to turn the music up. DO YOU WANT ME TO TURN THE MUSIC UP. I have NEVER BEEN MORE DISRESPECTED. This establishment will never have my business again and I will continue to scathe their name to all local businesses as I live my life day to day . I've been coming to this restaurant (Southside Tavern in Braintree) since they opened and have spent hundreds of dollars here on food and drinks. After the experience I had this past Sunday, though, I will never be bringing my business here again. My friend and I walked in, and someone checked our IDs at the door. We were sat by the hostess, and the waitress asked for our IDs again before we even asked to order drinks. I planned on having a cocktail, my friend wasn't planning on drinking. The waitress asked if we had "backup" for our IDs, so we both handed her our debit cards, at which point she disappeared with them into the back for about 10 minutes, doing who knows what. It felt as though we were being profiled from the very beginning, and I was very uncomfortable that she was gone with our debit cards and personal information for so long. Then the manager comes over and puts our IDs down on the table and smugly says "these are fake". We told him to check them again because they're 100% real, and he replied that he "feels" like they're fake so they won't be serving us. I let him know that I've been served here many times, and even offered to show him photos of me and another friend drinking there two weeks prior (I had the SAME waitress that time, too). I said he could even google us and see what year we graduated, check facebook, take a look at any of our other credit cards that had our names on them.. he wanted none of it. He stood there speaking loudly enough to embarrass us in front of a restaurant full of people, treating us like children and outright calling us liars. I told him I didn't appreciate the treatment we were receiving and asked for the owner's information, to which he refused. I asked for his name and he sheepishly replied that it's Ian and he's the general manager. I have never been treated so poorly by someone who is supposed to be a customer service professional. He is a sad representative for Southside as an establishment, and should be embarrassed about not only his behavior toward us as guests, but the fact that about halfway through the interaction he absolutely knew we had proved him wrong and didn't have the decency to admit it. His reasoning then turned to "well we won't be serving you regardless because you're so upset and that proves that they're fake". You bet we were upset at being belittled in a public place, to which I have brought plenty of business over the last few years. Ian was beyond rude and clearly incompetent, because Massachusetts licenses are pretty much impossible to fake. I told him if he pulled his out of his wallet it'd feel the exact same as ours, but he just stood there with the same smug look on his face, repeating the same thing, that he "feels" like they're fake. Not to mention he continued to make comments as we got our things together to leave. I will surely never, ever be bringing my business to this restaurant again, nor will any of my family or friends. Ian's treatment of us was disrespectful, tactless, ignorant, and clearly a power trip. I mentioned that he may want to educate himself on identifying fake IDs because if he's making this mistake with us, he probably has before and will continue to, thus costing Southside even more business. Maybe the owner should consider investing in an ID scanner to save his staff and customers embarrassment and frustration. It's a shame because I truly like going there, but as long as Ian is the manager, there's not a chance I, or anyone I know, will return. And after reading other reviews on here of how management and even the OWNER treats their patrons, I'm surprised they're even still in business. Disgusting. read more

We have visited the Southside regularly since it opened. The food is always great but the service is really spotty. Tried to eat both at the bar and the restaurant during a recent visit - bartender was rude, moved to restaurant and was ignored for service for 1/2 hour. Manager seemed clueless, but the hostess was very apologetic. Hopefully they will get their staff on board with the vision of creating both good food and good staffing. read more

Planned a night out here and had to present my ID at the door. My best friend and I are travel nurses from Florida. The door man said that they don't take out of state ID's and had to go get the manager. After 15 minutes a manager came out and said our ID's don't match her "book". I've been here before and had a good experience. But just yesterday I was disappointed in something I saw in terms of service. The entire restaurant was slammed (first warm day and they had all the windows open -- nice, open air kinda feel). There was a young-ish couple standing to the side of the bar (there were no seats available). I don't know how long they were there but they were clearly wasted but the bar kept serving them. Somehow they started an argument with people sitting at the end of the bar near where they were getting their drinks from. The drunk guy from the couple was threatening to beat up the guy sitting at the bar. Ridiculous! No one on the staff intervened to shut the guy up. And sure enough he was served again. Both he and is drunken girlfriend should've been cut off. I wonder how they got home... read more

Southside absolutely rules, there is absolutely no disputing that. If for some reason you didn't enjoy your experience at southside, you must have been having a bad day. Been going to this joint on a regular basis for years and have literally never left unhappy. There's not many things in life I enjoy more than going to southside with a few buddys, racking up a nice tab of beer and food, and watching the game(s). Food is always good, and there's always different daily specials. The staff are all friendly and highly competent as well. If you don't like southside, you can take a hike over to McDonalds and shove a quarter-pounder in your fat face! read more

I didn't know that people who have a foreign appearance are not allowed at your establishment. A couple of my friends and I were trying to have some drinks when we were rudely interrupted at the end of the night by one of your employees. He told us, "People who don't speak English, get the fuck out. " I get that it was the end of the night but there is no need for those types of comments. I'm not sure who that man is, but you all really need to reevaluate the people you employ. No one needs to be discriminated and be talked down to that way unless that is how you want to run your business. read more

After our first visit I would've given 5 stars without batting an eye. The food was delicious, the server was cheerful, informative, quick and thorough and just overall a pleasure. She really made the experience great. We had a wedge salad, chicken wings, quesadilla (which was a little lackluster but decent) and my bf had the french onion soup that he still dreams about. Because it was so good, we went back just a few days later as he was craving the soup. We were seated immediately, and then we waited....and waited....and waited.... We watched about 3 or 4 servers move around the room, go to every other table, and come nowhere near us. We watched a table that was seated well after us get served before us. In 12 minutes of sitting there, nobody came to our table to identify themselves as a server, to take a drink order, NOTHING. We watched one server take care of a table that was seated after us, then go up to the hostess desk and stand around chatting with them for a while before going to the bar to chat for a while there as well. Eventually we got up and left. Being completely ignored is ridiculous. Not sure what the issue was, whether there was no server assigned to our table, or wasn't told that they had someone seated, or someone was just straight up being lazy, but it was ridiculous. read more
