The prices are low, but the quality of the food is really good which brings me back all the time. Service is always friendly, and I love how convenient it is to call in my order as I'm leaving work, and by the time I get there, it's ready for pickup. It was pretty bland and disappointing. But also this place isn't known for their veggie burger. They're apparently known for their actual beef burgers. So maybe try that. But if you're looking for a veggie option this place ain't it. Now however the fresh cut fries hit! Do try those or maybe only those if you don't consume beef. I've been craving a burger so I decided to try this place near work (med center). The place is super casual with a Texan theme. Order at the counter and take a seat and they'll bring you the food when it's ready. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger which was $10.25 no side included. We also got the onion rings and fries. The burger was decent but not very flavorful or cheesy and the mushrooms could've been cooked more. The onion rings were great. The fries were home style fresh fries that were not very crisp but had a nice potato taste. Overall, I enjoyed my meal but it wasn't very memorable for me and I most likely wouldn't go back to spend $35 on that meal. I'd just try something else. I was largely unaware of Southwell's as a local chain, but soon learned about its' nearly 40 year history as a business across several locations sprinkled around the city. Located along Holcombe Blvd just outside the Med Center, this location has been serving burger lovers in the neighborhood for close to two decades. Like many of the businesses in the plaza, this place is casual and sleepy, serving a mix of hospital employees, senior citizens, and nearby Rice students. There's a good number of medium sized tables and booths, and a bustling bilingual staff ready to serve. Lunch is going to be their busiest time, but they also do a fair amount of take out as well. As expected, the menu is very burger heavy. The non-burger options are really some sandwiches (#1), salads, with a few different kinds of fries and shakes, but that's it. Despite the two dozen choices on the menu that range from patty melts to chili hamburgers, the reality is that any burger can be customized. I tend to prefer a double bleu burger with avocado and a fried egg. If I'm feeling indulgent, I'll throw in some bacon as well. It's a sizeable patty and roughly the same price as the fast food joints across the street. (#2). It's not a glamourous burger by any stretch, but I think it's a solid choice for what it is. A special shout out to their fresh cut fries, which are nicely fried and not too thick but have plenty of crunch. It's not too greasy and makes for an excellent side to the burgers. The waffle fries, cheese fries, and onion rings come in a distant second. The milkshakes are not exceptional, but similarly to the burgers, they get the job done. I learned not all locations offer them, but rest assured this one does. At the end of the day, this isn't a burger destination less than it is a place to get burgers while in the neighborhood. When I see my Barbi, I'm excited and my SOUTH SWELLS I use Compaq in the North, but I prefer my SOUTH DELLS McPherson from Down Under, Woods from AL, love my SOUTH ELLES And if I want burgers then I hed along to SOUTHWELLS! WHAT! There are 4 locations, and I've been to 3 so far. There might be more I don't know about. Southwells definitely have some of the best sandwiches in town and we always appreciate every single bite. Service here was not too bad, although I prefer the other locations for that. Southwell's is a Houston Legend and a specialty shop which has wonderful burgers and great chicken sandwiches, juicy and fresh and tasty with plenty of chicken on them. Barbi has been to a couple of them with me and she agrees, they have excellent burgers and really great chicken sandwiches. They're not cheap but they're not expensive, and service is usually great at all the different locations, including this one. One of the waitresses here, I believe she is from Peru, is one of the friendliest and loveliest people I've encountered in Houston, and she's why I come back here more than to the other locations. Yes, their products can be a little dry and a little plain, but easily 5 stars and way better than any of the chains. I love all the locations, but especially this one here down on Holcombe where one of the ladies is already a good friend, I've only met her 3 times. I've only had food from this chain a total of two-three times max. This was my first time at this location. I ordered a Hamburger with only lettuce, tomatoes and very light mustard on my recent takeout visit this Sunday afternoon. I have to say I was very impressed, bc finding a good burger cafe is just uncommon. For ex, you go to Pappas Burger once, it's awesome and the second time it's just decent. This burger I got was very warm and fresh, which is really important for hot sandwiches and meats, bc I can eat lukewarm for most things, but those two. The meat patty was very well-seasoned, juicy, soft, not irony in taste and not overly fatty. It was a very delicious burger and didn't need much on it and didn't need cheese either. Imo, that's a terrific made burger if it has a lot of flavor without cheese, sauce and anything too distracting only needing some veggies. The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the onion rings were nice and crispy. The burger was a bit more pricey than I expected, and the onion rings were a little greasy. However, the burger was pretty big and onion rings were deep fried so it wasn't really a surprise. The menu is pretty standard and there's no unique toppings or dishes, but if you're just looking for classic style burgers and sides, this is a solid choice! Wow this complex is coming up in the world with it's newly instated common bond location. But the star of the show is definitely still Southwell's. Conveniently located near the med center, this burger joint has got it all: burgers, chicken, sandwiches, shakes. They've got a choice of waffle and regular fries for the same price (I was surprised people seem to usually charge extra for waffle fries). I wasn't too impressed with these; they were very very crispy and I prefer fries that have a bit of softness in the middle with a crunchy exterior. They had a couple cajun spices peppered on the fries, I think. Probably the only order of fries I haven't finished in a loooong time - just too charred. Cheeseburger - comes with pickles, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese. Quite a few toppings for a pretty affordable burger. The burger was juicy - similar in consistency to those they have at shake shack and pretty large at 1/3lb. The interior was set up with a diner vibe; very, very clean and cozy. Once you enter you pass through some tables to order at the back. The staff are real friendly. The receipts don't automatically ask you for tip if you're ordering take out, so you'll have to make a separate tip. An older hispanic man seemed to bring out all the orders; he was very friendly and attentive holding doors open and going to fetch any additional requests. There seemed to be quite a few locals who frequent this joint that knew him well. My son swore up and down he'd taken me here before, I would have 'membered a place this good. We fell off our keto diet today and it was worth it. We did split a double meat burger with blue cheese and an egg, yum! It was downhill after that.
