I've followed them for a while on social media, went to Crusade, their sister restaurant in Yorkville, and really enjoyed the food. I thought that this experience was better. Not to say that Crusade isn't good, but the menu being smaller really let's them craft the menu to be the best they can. I had two mixed drinks, which were very well made, and the "Cheat Code" chicken sandwich. It was marinated very well and had such a great flavor and grill crisp on it. Been here three times now and it's been consistent. The love of it is understandable. Great location, cool vibe and overall good service. They have an excellent tap menu and some interesting cocktails. The food menu reads amazing and had our mouths watering. Where it loses stars for me is the execution of the food. A little sloppily put together makes it less appealing when you see it. The kicker is they do cool recipes but then place it on extremely poor quality buns. They are most likely using alpha backings channel pan rolls which have a very doughy texture and almost no flavor. If they tightened their sauces and moved to an artisan roll it would move to 4.5 quickly. Note: most of our servers have been truly professionals which helps the evening! read more

We live around 25 miles from downtown Plainfield and hadn't been in awhile. The town has really growing up with a lot of restaurant options. We close Sovereign based on their menu and reviews. Used the no wait ap and were seated right away. I should note, it was just 5:30 Friday evening & not long after we arrived it was full. Cute place that seems to have been built in an old house. The regular seating is kind of carved out around a large welcoming bar area. It was cold out when we were there and they were struggling to keep the place warm. Highly recommend the food! Food choices were unique- NY strip with fried rice - both were delicious and the steak was cooked perfectly. Inventive salads, pork and chicken dishes as well as burger and sandwich options. Prices were generally in the 12 to 28 range. Alcohol included several craft spirits, craft beer on tap, bottle or can along with one wine brand for each 'category' - Pinot noir, Cab, etc. Walter was our server - he was a pleasant person but didn't appear to be motivated by time at all. My husband and arrived first and the in-laws arrived 29 minutes later. It took 5+ minutes for him to come around for their drink order. I had Sovereign bookmarked forever and was happy to finally check it out! I feel sort of weird reviewing this place as their menu makes it clear they're not very yelp-friendly, but the food was delicious and the experience should be enjoyed, so here we are. We started with a meat and cheese board, which was absolutely delicious. For my entree, I settled on the piggy smalls sandwich: pork belly, apple slaw, bourbon mustard, pickle, and Gouda, all on a hoagie roll. I was nervous about the mustard because I hate bourbon, but the flavor was subtle and the overall melding of flavors was amazing. I love anything pork belly and this sandwich did not disappoint. We also shared a dessert, a special - tres leches cake with a coffee whip cream, cherry, and a fun caramelized sugar, sort of abstract decoration. The entire dessert was absolutely beautiful and so delicious but the coffee whipped cream was INCREDIBLE. I could have just had a bowl of the damn whipped cream. That good. I would absolutely return here and try more of the interesting menu and enjoy a cocktail or two. read more

This is the restaurant Plainfield has been waiting for. The food is phenomenal - we tried the truffle fries (best fries I've ever had, and even better with a fried egg!). I had the scallops (bacon hash!), which were incredible. Pair that with fantastic local craft beers, reasonable prices and it beats anything Naperville or Chicago has to offer. I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Sovereign for months. I am always nervous that my expectations will leave me disappointed with a new restaurant.... Not a chance at Sovereign!! My buddy and I met for lunch on a Monday so it was relatively empty which is fine with me. We sat near the bar and were immediately met by our server. I couldn't drink but my friend (who is as close to a beer sommelier as I know) studied the beer menu and was very pleased with the selections and uniqueness of their offerings. I ordered a cream soda.... The lunch menu is a sandwich heavy sampling of the dinner menu (I know this cuz I've had a copy of the dinner menu on my desk for weeks!!!). We chose to both start with the SOD (soup of the day for those that never worked in the industry) which was cream of mushroom. The soup flavor was outstanding.... However, it was served Luke warm. I found this small screw up odd given the previous reviews commenting this problem. Cmon guys, turn up the crock pot!!!! B- We then split the wings A++. The risotto (hen of the woods mushroom and pecorino) A+++++++. And the tacos A. We both were extremely pleased with the service, food and the ambiance. We are now eager to try the dinner selections very very soon!! This restaurant is an oasis in will county. Went in late December with a friend to suss out the hype. Made reservations, but it wasn't busy when we arrived. I'm happy to see a place like this in the area - we needed more than a Chili's or Chipotle! Food was great, and I love that it's as local as possible. As for the "anti-Yelp" thang, some of you are REAL bent over that - get real. While Yelp is often reliable, places like Sovereign, that aren't your traditional place, tend to get slammed for stupid stuff by people who want a regular cheeseburger with greasy fries and then don't get it. Wow! The food is amazing!! We came here to try something new not really knowing what to expect, we were not disappointed! The building from The outside does not really give off the look of a restaurant so make sure you don't miss it! The parking lot is nice and big so no need to worry about finding a spot! We were greeted by the hostess at the door and promptly sat at what seemed like the furtherest table in the restaurant. But it was actually a really nice spot! Lots of fun decorations to look at and not to much noise around us, and we were not forgotten about ;) The speciality drinks were awesome! I tried a few and liked them, also many many different beers to try...the food menu is not super big but it does not need to be! They have specials from each section that change all the time! So my sister decided to take me out for my birthday since she isn't going to be around for the actual day so we decided to try a new place. This was a great spot! They have such a wide variety on their menu that includes vegan options for those who are. I would not be vegan, and I definitely enjoyed me some delicious cheeseburger! But first we had a couple of drinks. I had never heard of any of the brands of beer/cider/liquor so you know whatever you get you're gonna like. This place reminds me of one of the best places I've had a burger (it was in Nashville at a little spot called the pharmacy) but this place is right there with it! Everything is fresh and local and you can't get much better than that. We had some sourdough bread to start with a homemade butter with seasonings in it that I can't recall off the top of my head. The bread was fresh and warm and tasty. The only thing I would say negative about it was that it didn't rely taste like sour dough but the butter that they had was delicious so that definitely made up for it! Both of us had a burger and fresh French fries. They were so super yummy the flavor of the meat was out of this world. For dessert they had fresh banana cream and fresh key lime pies. Now living in South Carolina for a few years we've kinda become experts on key lime pie and this was right up there with some of the bests. Sovereign is nicely styled and the concept is fresh when it comes to what is available in Plainfield, that being said, my wife and I feel the food is a bit underwhelming and the service was subpar. One thing that really bothers me as a customer is the fact that a table that is seated after us, gets their food before ours (supposedly they order the same appetizers we did). Add the fact that not only did they get their appetizers before us, our dinner came and our appetizers never showed up. Now granted, the did comp us a dessert for the inconvenience, but it didn't sit well with us sitting at the table seeing our appetizers being enjoyed by a family next to us. Now to the food... I wish I could have talked about the appetizers that the waitress had raved to us about, but it wasn't meant to be (okay, enough about that). My wife ordered the pork shank (dine with swine) and a side Caesar salad, I went with a Sovereign burger with an egg and bacon with some other fixings. My daughter had the chicken strips with some frites. The last two meals were above average, both tasted very good, but there wasn't anything special about it. As for my wife's meal, that was another story. The pork shank was dry and overcooked. Even the chef( I assumed) came out to tell us the the meat should be moist near the bone, which it wasn't. They didn't offer to fix it other than to give us some more sauce. Sorry, if the pork is dry as an AA meeting, it is overdone and nothing will bring it back from the dead. I think we will not come back for a while, if ever. I really hope the experience would have been a better one, this could have been a great place, especially for Plainfield. read more

I waffled back and forth between 3 and 4 stars for this spot. I came here solo while on business travel on a slow Monday night. The high point here is service. My waiter was welcoming, friendly, and responsive, and took my order quickly. My food came out VERY fast so obviously the kitchen/wait staff are working closely together and doing a good job of it. The food was still piping hot so I knew it was fresh out of the kitchen the instant it was ready. As soon as I was done eating, my plate was whisked away, I was offered dessert (declined) and my check was promptly brought out. Where this place missed the mark was the quality of food compared to the price paid. I got the salmon and for $24 for a plate, I would have either expected a lot more food or much better final product. The salmon fillet was overcooked and slightly chewy. The pieces of bacon that were in it were also chewy - neither crispy nor soft, but in that awful middle region that no one likes. The sauce and flavoring was good, as was the butternut squash puree under it, also I loved the caramelized onions, there just wasn't enough of this other stuff. The ambiance is also not bad; it can get a bit noisy in there due to the all-wood finishes. Not necessarily a great date spot but good for small groups or double-dates. I've only been to Joliet on business so I would say Sovereign is targeting an otherwise underserved market by going for the more high-end dining, because I'm here on business expensing my meals and this is more than double what I've paid for any other meal while in the Joliet area without driving closer in to Chicago. I think they need to pick up the food quality if they want to earn more business. read more

Upon receiving the bill: We do not support Yelp. No other comments or services that they don't support on the bill line. I guess they are butt hurt by some of the reviews and can't take real reviews? I'd like an explaination since they have replied to previous yelpers with bad reviews. My experience there was a drinking one. Had one wing with the bloody mary and that wing was well flavored. Prices are expensive but everything I saw, drank and ate was quality. Paying for good quality isn't a problem in my opinion. $14 for a bloody mary which was excellent and came with a wing, celery, pickles, cheeses, 2oz of beer and prosciutto. Expensive yeah but well worth it. Beers on tap range $4.50-$11.00 depending on the beer and honestly they are priced on par with the environment and beers on tap. Friednly staff and very well put together decore. $32 with tip for a bloody mary and two beers. I am frugal but was ok with the cost based on the quality. Will be back for the beers but not sure if I will ever make it to the food. I did notice that they added one side with the $12 burger. Maybe they are listening to these reviews?! I called 8 times last week for takeout. No one picked up despite the number I called being broadcast on multiple channels as the number to call for to-go. Finally I just ordered on their online platform despite the online platform not specifying what any of the daily specials were or allowing for any modifications, even as simple as adding lettuce to a burger. The food was pretty good last week, so we decided to get takeout from Sovereign again today. This time, I only called 4 times before giving up and placing an order from the online platform. I got a confirmation email that said my order would be ready in 20-25 minutes. Sovereign is about 20-25 minutes from my house, so I left immediately. I arrived to find that Sovereign is closed today, despite their website saying that they are open and their online ordering platform confirming my order. The complete lack of service and disregard for customers during a time when takeout is a huge business negates any good food that this restaurant may have. read more

This establishment came highly recommended and did not disappoint. I have sat at the bar and in the dining section and have received excellent customer service in both areas. The bartenders and wait staff really make you feel welcomed and want you to come back and visit again. I also noticed that in the dining section a manager walks around and casually asks if your dining experience is going well. It is not instrusive at all and shows that they truly care about how you feel about their restaurant. Oh and the food and drink...well lets just say that it is AWESOME! I highly recommend building your own burger or the Widowmaker sandwich, both are mouthwatering. Their tap list is quite impressive for they have craft beers that are hard to come by...someone has a good connection here :) My only wish is that I lived closer and can frequent this place more often. Called four times for takeout and got your taped message every time that sent me to hold. Never got an answer or an opportunity to talk to anyone so ordered on-line. On-line ordering offers no opportunity to alter menu items or to build your own burger or to know what daily specials are .... but nobody answered so on-line was our choice. We pull up and there's a huge banner outside with the takeout number to call and order. Out of curiosity I gave it another try. No answer. Headed in to pick up our on-line order and there were five employees talking at the hostess stand. They chatted the whole time I wanted for my order to come out.
