Loved the neighborhood pub vibe of Spartan Ale House. It is a gem of a gathering place and the owners and staff are super nice. It was my first visit on a chilly Thursday night, but clearly a lot of regular patrons in here. I was there for an after work social and the appetizers I tasted were all delicious. I loved that the chicken wings were plain for dipping and not heavily breaded. Exactly how I prefer mine. If you are a first timer, like I was, be cautious of the one way parking flow. Spartan House continues to be a wonderful place to have cocktails, watch a game on one of their many TV's and to have lunch or dinner. The staff has always been knowledgeable on cocktail and dining recommendations. When the weather is warm, they have large glass garage doors that open to give an open air/dining experience. In our six years plus of patronage I've only ordered their excellent Salmon. Today I broke with tradition and ordered the Lamb Lollipops topped with a rosemary demi-glacé served with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. My lovely bride had the Spartan Steak Marinated Kabobs, with red onions, peppers, Mediterranean rice and topped with feta cheese. Both were excellent! I like the Spartan Ale House. Good food for a reasonable price. In the times I have been there I have enjoyed my food and would go back and order the same item again. However twicw now I have been dissapointed. The first time was their fish and chips but in the Midwest it's hard to find good fish and chips. Last Thursday we had dinner there. It's only about 10 minutes from our house. I decided to have the Rueban Sandwich. Unfortunitely cornbeef and dry out if left in the pan too long. Not only was it dry but thet forgot to put any Sourkraut on it, which wuld have helped. Plus I not sure if they put any of the Thousand Island drssing on it or there wasa so little I could not find it. I only have one of these every few years and was dissapointed but didn't realize what was missing until after we got home. Hope the owners read this a correct the quality of this sandwich. read more

We stopped in before the Bears game for dinner and a couple beers. The service was exceptional- friendly and informative. Our two dinner dishes the Spartan Kebabs and Greek chicken were tasty and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was great with many TV's and mix a people which would put everyone at ease. First timers at Spartan Ale House in Aurora - went on a Saturday afternoon to watch some basketball. Plenty of tv's all around the place. Service was fine ... a little rough to start but ended up solid in the end. Food deserves a solid 4 stars - all four of us had sandwiches and all gave a thumbs up. Went there for lunch recently for a burger. Did a Build your own burger medium rare with everything on it. After 40 minutes the burger made it out well done and I could not get over the amount of Sodium in the burger. I think I met my annual sodium intake for the year. Dry, salty and slow to come out. Good appetizers, like the pretzel sticks and cheese. I tried their salmon, but wasn't super impressed. The salmon itself was a bit dry. And the veggies that came with did not taste right either. I ordered a margarita and when it came out it tasted 95% alcohol, so I couldn't really drink it. But they brought out something different for me so that was good. Their logo is a skull and cross bones fashioned from wheat blades. One might think they are gluten-hostile! In reality, Spartan House has an impressive variety of gluten free dishes. I had the meat lover's pizza and the GF base was light and delicious. Meat was a bit overcooked though. I was also very tempted by the Hades burger with ghost pepper cheese since they can substitute a gluten free bun. For the side, I got the truffle+parm fries: big enough to share and the "flavors" were not overwhelming. Overall, they cast a wide net with their menu (Greek, Italian, BBQ, wings, Mac n' Cheese) but everything I tried was pretty high quality in its own right. They also have a great list of ciders and a rotating craft brewery list (with 18 taps). If you're in Aurora and wanting some gluten free food/ brews, definitely put Spartan House at the top of your list. read more

The server was great. Very accommodating to our group. I ordered salmon. After several minutes was told...no salmon. Instead I ordered soup of the day which was good. We got our bill and one of the party said she saw a sign that there was a 3.5% service charge to use the credit card. No big deal, many businesses are implementing CC fees. I paid cash. My change was .40 short. I found out that the establishment does not give coin change and rounds down for .49 and up for .50. No sign, no notification. More to pay cash than CC. read more

We have picked up food many times from Spartan House and always enjoyed everything we've gotten so far. However, I'm extremely disappointed that they are skirting around the current indoor dining ban law with a "email club" you can sign up for, essentially allowing anyone to dine in. It's thoroughly irresponsible, reckless, and shows that management does not care about the safety of their patrons and local community. They already have an outdoor and tent space, so this comes off as a big middle finger. I love small businesses, and will continue to support every small business that respects the current state health orders, but unfortunately we will not longer order from here. We were looking for a place to have lunch that served craft brew. We are thankful for finding this place. We assumed it would be good considering the amount of cars in the lot on a weekday. We were not disappointed. Service was quick and very accommodating for making a change to my wife's barbecue chicken flatbread. I had the bacon burger and both were delicious. They have an extensive and diverse beer menu. They did miss an opportunity when I came back from the restroom and stopped to look at the bottles of whiskeys they had to see if so might want a Shot. I do that in case they have one I have not had yet. The person gave me a look then kept ringing in an order. She was busy post lunch rush so I returned to my seat. Seriously not pet friendly. I was told I could not return with my 8 pound chihuahua that sat in his sling the entire time and uttered not a sound. Our other dogs are just as well behaved at outside restaurant seating. Owners enforce a NO DOG POLiCY even on patio. J have never had a problem takin our dogs to Altiro, Two Brothers, Guillersons, Lazy Dog or the numerous other restaurants in Andersonville/Uptown. Giillersons even brings you water bowls for your pet while you eat !! While my server Teresa was awesome and most friendly (kudos and thank you so much !!) and food was good, if this restaurant truly wants to cater to the urban Aurora downtown crowd they SERIOUSLY need to reconsider their no pet policy. Though possessing an upscale feel Spartan's prices aren't upscale. Lunch burgers, salads, sandwiches, and wraps fill out the menu, along with a few meat and steak entrees. A Greek salad was a smorgasbord of tastes, colors, and textures. A wonderful flatbread accompanied that almost had the consistency and sweetness of a pancake. Nice place located on the far south west side of Aurora. They have inside and outside dinning. Parking is a little tight but maybe it's because they have a tent for additional seating due to COVID. We dined outside along the street. It was really nice different than most places. It almost seemed like your in someone's front yard having dinner as the houses are located right across the street. This I really enjoyed. We had the Calimari for appetizer with a white sauce. This was actually very good. Much better then the red sauce most places serve. The Sparta Burger was pretty big and had a large block of cheese. Lots of flavor, the beef was great too. Wish they had a better beer selection. Okay so here's the low down on Spartan House. First I want to recognize my waitress Lauren. She was SO kind, compassionate, and understanding. Absolutely the best part of mine and my family's experience here. Now for the BAD or may I say horrible? Upon our arrival my family and I went to sit down at the bar which wasn't very crowded. The bartenders name was Sam. There was so much that went wrong during this experience that I think it is best in list form: 1. Sam ordered us to show IDs when we sat down at the bar so I pulled mine out and set it on the table. It sat there while she talked with the other bartender. When she turned back to us she asked for our drink orders, so I put my ID away while my mom ordered a coke. I asked to see the cocktail list and she was annoyed with me and said "ID!" I explained to her that I had it sitting out and figured she had already checked it. She turned around again to talk while my ID sat there. Again. Not a great start. 2. My mom, 24 year old sister, and I were sitting at the open seats at the bar with my dad standing behind us. He's a gentleman so he wanted us three to have the seats. My sister didn't want anything alcoholic so she didn't have her ID but just wanted to be apart of conversation. My sister politely asked if it was ok for her to just sit. Sam said "no." And made a shooing motion with her hand in my sister's face. WOW. 3. I asked for a drink menu. Sam pulled a laminated paper off of the wall and sort of threw it on the table in a hast. The paper was the cheat sheet for the bartenders on how to make 3 of their cocktails. I ordered one. After ordering, the guy next to us handed us the real drink menu which had a cocktail that I actually wanted that wasn't on the cheat sheet Sam threw at us. DISAPPOINTING. 4. I ordered my drink. And this is when I realized I'd never want to come back here. I watched the bartender pull an empty bottle of syrup and try to squish out every last drop. Instead of throwing the bottle away, she sprayed water into it, shook it up, and poured the water into my drink, diluting it! I was really hoping that wasn't my drink. It was HORRIBLE. But not nearly as bad as her attitude towards my family. I was too intimidated to even say something to her because of her demeanor. 5. I hadn't even had a sip of my drink when she was already asking us when we were going to go sit at a table instead of the bar. She asked if she could close our tab even though we were enjoying sitting at the bar talking. After I said no to closing our tab she stood right in front of us and started talking to coworkers about who they could kick out from the bar so a different set of people could sit. I couldn't believe we were being treated like garbage. Once we got a table my family and I were honestly just in a really crappy mood. We were sad to be treated so poorly and upset that we had paid for a diluted drink. Once we sat down however, Lauren greeted us all with a big smile and excitement to welcome us and introduce herself! She was quick to get us waters and our appetizers! I asked her quietly if she could get me a drink from the bar, made by anyone other than the bartender that had made our first drinks. I didn't want to put her in the middle of anything but she reassured me that she understood and went the extra mile to just be understanding which goes a very long way! Every other employee that we came in contact with seemed happy and inviting but a first impression is important and I don't think I'd be willing to come here again with the risk of ever having to see that bartender again. I plan on calling management tomorrow and will update this review after the call. read more

A newer spot with a decent tap list and a little room for improvement. First off: parking - they make you well aware but be absolutely sure you are parking in an acceptable area since this location is surrounded by parking no-zones (no, not around back, not across the street, not west of their lot either). That said they do have an OK sized parking lot for the building with the spaces on the west side - though maybe a little cramped if they were at capacity. No fault on any party here - it is all clearly marked (including a note on the entrance) and nearby residents should be able to park in their own spots but it did take 3 attempts before I found the spaces on the west side of the building. So what drew me in? Some good reviews, a pretty good tap list (with BCBS '17 on tap), and the allure of the Hades burger. (I also saw lamb burgers mentioned in a review but did not see them on the menu). The beer list is totally decent and reasonably priced. We had a BCBS and another stout that were both on point and served quickly after ordering. The food took a bit to prepare but that was OK since we had kinda beat dinner seating for a late lunch. I ordered the Hades and prepared my mouth for a jalapeno and sriracha cheese torching and decided to go with a side of mac 'n cheese for an up-charge. All of their burgers are cooked to medium with a pair of smash/flat style patties. The Hades burger looked oh so pretty with its thick layer of jalapenos glaring at me. Presentation was 5 stars - but the burger itself was about as white-people-hot as I've tried anywhere. Not one tear, not one drop of sweat, not even a tinge of spice on my tongue. I couldn't understand it. Well put together, well presented, but where's the spice?! The mac 'n cheese was tasty. I like that you get to pick your cheese. The sauce was slightly runny at first but cooled into a better consistency by the time I'd finished my burger. A little more sticky thickness would be nice here but I can't fault them on it. I did also try some of my pal's sweet potato fries - nothing good or bad to say they were exactly what you'd expect. All things considered my bill did seem like things were a little expensive but not crazy. I hope the small bump in price means great ingredients but I'd like it to mean huge flavor too. I'm definitely willing to give Spartan House another try. They were close to a 4 star but I'm gonna need a bit more flavor and a lot more spice if I get something with a name like Hades. I think I'll check out something else on the menu to see if they can do it better when I come back around... I see a chicken with cheese sauce calling my name! read more

Perfect brunch/lunch/beers stop. A friend and I put our name in at a brunch place down the road with a 50 min wait. With a toddler and a newborn in tow, we ventured a little further and stumbled upon Spartan House. Is taking children to a sports bar for lunch one of the best kept parenting secrets out there?! It was not very busy for brunch (1030/11ish), it was loud-ish with all the TVs so that our younger brood didn't disturb anyone, and the food was delish to boot! My friend opted for one of their skillets which she enjoyed. I--being an Eastern time zone girl--skipped ahead to lunch and had the Spartan burger. We decided to go here on Sunday night for dinner but when we arrived, there were 10 people waiting for tables. There were 5 servers busing/cleaning tables feverishly but there was no hostess. We were there about 5 minutes before we started talking and wondering why no one would even acknowledge us or ask if we wanted to sit inside or outside. Finally, after 9 minutes, the phone rang and a young woman finally arrived at the hostess desk to answer the phone and take a very lengthy order on the phone. She no sooner hung up the phone when it rang again and she took another order over the phone asking if they wanted rolls with that? Never once did she acknowledge our presence so we walked out. It seems that they are more interested in their phone order business than actual customers. It will be a long time before we return here for any type of meal. I don't even think that I will phone one in. read more

Always great service here and the menu options are great. The serving sizes are very good. Not too much but very filling. The atmosphere is great. They have a few slot machines that can be noisy when the crowd is light but it's not too bad. I mostly go for weekday lunches as we have our work meetings there. Highly recommend. They seem to have a lot of usuals (like us) so that's always a great sign. read more

A local neighborhood restaurant/pub was lots of charm, that offers good food and nice service. Upon entry they have all the local high schools emblems and aurora universities too. The ambience is bright with plenty of windows and modern decor. They offer a wide selection of brews and plenty of daily drink specials. We came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and it was easy to find parking and no wait. The parking lot is one way only. We had the chicken shawarma and fries and 1lb chicken wings with a variety of sauces on the side. Everything tasted hot, fresh, and good. Well, as time has gone by, and numerous trips to Spartan House have been had, it's well overdue for an update. Unfortunately not a good one. We started going here when our usual spot suffered a fire. This one being close by was a natural. The food has really started to become hit or miss and it seems more miss the hit. Sometimes it's the food. Sometimes it's the service. Sometimes both. Often times we find ourselves waiting for a server for several minutes to be seated. We've also noticed they tend to seat you where it's convenient for them, even if you request a location, they will tell you it's reserved and the tables will sit there unattended. Finally, after last night, we've had our fill of Spartan at least for the time being. It started with arriving for our 6:30 Christmas Eve reservation that my wife had made. When the server sat us she told us that "the kitchen closes at 7pm so we have 23 minutes to make a decision on what we want. If we are indecisive, then she doesn't know what to tell us. " Kind of odd. Why would the place take in a 6:30 dinner reservation when the kitchen at a sit down restaurant closes in less than a half hour and the bar at 8? So we immediately put in our appetizer and dinner order together. Obviously desert was going to be out of the question. There were other families and couples as well. I overheard the server tell another family that the kitchen closes in 9 minutes as she was seating them. We also ordered a couple drinks and when the food arrived it was terrible. I could not believe just how bad it was. Terribly dry chicken. The steak on my salad might as well have been a boot. Fries barely even warmed. It was almost as if it was intentional. The waitress returned the final time at 7:30 and asked if we'd like anything else and my wife said she would like another drink and may have one more before we leave (we felt rushed the entire time). The waitress told her that she can only have the one as the bar closes at 8. So we took the check. This was actually the first time we ever had this waitress/server, however with the service along with the food, it was a completely unacceptable experience. read more
