Holy fuckballs. My husband and I have been frequent visitors of the Sov since it opened, and we both agree that it just keeps getting better. We just attended their valentines day three course dinner. Appetizers were innovative and unlike their usual menu fare. We both tried the steak special and our minds were blown. We've been together seven years now and anytime I've ordered steak at a restaurant, I've taken half of it home for us to eat at the end of the night when we're good and drunk. Tonight's steak was so unbelievably amazing, I finished the whole god damn thing and probably won't need to eat for two days now. Their head chef Tristan came out to greet us, and was an absolute sweetheart. Marie was on bar and en fleek as always, an absolute gem, and our server was once again amazing. We're in a disagreement over her name, but she's the one with the beautiful ink on her arms. Anyways, if you haven't been yet, you need to get out of the hole you're living in and go grab some fried chicken and duck poutine. We can't wait for our next visit, which will most likely be Sunday night. read more

Enjoyed our meal immensely...we had a fig and prosciutto pizza that was absolutely delicious, dry Cajun wings were equally fabulous. Very happening spot, we were initially told our wait would be 1/2hr but we only waited approx 10-15 min. Wait staff friendly and upbeat. All in all a great restaurant experience. read more

Ate here a couple of times while in Thunder Bay. I loved it here. Great atmosphere, great beer list, and very friendly helpful staff. Superb vibe for a little gastropub. They have a tv behind the bar where they typically show old movies from their collection and all the beers are written on a chalkboard on the opposite wall. The food I had was great and well executed. Although I didn't get to try the pizzas, I did notice a whole lot of them leaving the kitchen, and they looked and smelled really amazing. Good drinks and good food for brunch! We stopped in on a Sunday around noon since we're staying in the Thunder Bay Area for a long weekend. It does get pretty busy for brunch/lunch so just keep that in mind if you want to swing by. Everyone we've met recommended the Breakfast Poutine, so we ordered that, some coffee, and a couple mixed drinks (which were excellent). Service was a little slow; we had to flag someone down to bring us menus after waiting at a table for ten minutes, but that was overlooked by the quality of the food and drinks! Definitely a nice place to stop by if you're in the area. Also equally affordable and good for groups. read more

Terrible service, very limited menu. A group of four of us were going for dinner and looked at the menu online before going. One of the mains that we noticed was Korean BBQ beef short ribs. We didn't see the ribs on the menu when we got there. When we asked our server, (Sheridan from the bill) about ribs, he said very derisively "this is a gastro pub, not a smokehouse". We had gift certificates we wanted to use, so stayed anyway in spite of this rudeness. One of us ordered the duck entree - this small breast came with literally no sides and was not enough food for the young man that ordered it. The waiter said nothing, and when the food came and we said "Is that it?" he said "Yeah, people say that all the time". When we ordered burgers, he made no mention of sides so we had to ask. Apparently it comes with fries and you can substitute a salad, but only if you ask - the server won't mention it. A truly bad selection of local beer where "lots of hops" translates into microbrewed beer (?). Avoid this place if you are looking for a meal for a group of people who have ever eaten in a restaurant before and have reasonable expectations for a place this pretentious and with these prices. read more

Went to dinner to the Sovereign Room for a friend's birthday Friday April 20, 2012, first time I'd ever been there.....and all I can say is WOW.....GOOD JOB.....we ordered an array of food so I got to try many different menu items and it is the first time EVER that I thoroughly enjoyed everything....NOT A SINGLE COMPLAINT! Waited over 20 min to find out they didn't even have the item that 2 of us had ordered so we re ordered and one meal took 25 min longer to come out than the others and they refused to give us a refund when we asked to cancel the order since it was taking so long. read more

The vibe is casual and cool. The food is always great. A great place to grab brunch, lunch, dinner and or drinks.

So I went back with some friends who wanted to try the Sovereign out. The place was not as packed as usual for a Saturday night but the service was much, much better. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. The food was also very good...as usual. read more

I would have written this place a 5 star review. My family was in Thunder Bay for a week and ate here twice and LOVED it. Great food! However, on our 3rd attempt to stop in for dinner on our last night in town, we were pushed out simply because our 15 year old daughter was with us. Apparently there was a rule that no minors can be in the restaurant after 9pm? This came as a surprise to us since we had eaten dinner here 2 times earlier in the week as a family and each visit was similar timing. We would still recommend this restaurant and would go back if we ever visit Thunder Bay again; however, we hope that the restaurant will consider allowing families to enjoy their food as late as everyone else. Perhaps there is a compromised approach that can be offered? There aren't many options in town to eat after 9pm... We ended up going to Tomlin and were glad we did. However, it was just an unfortunate way to end our relationship with the Sov (which we had developed quite a liking for prior). read more

My fiance and I eat here probably once a week now. We're addicted. Favourites are the fried chicken, duck poutine, pizza, and we always get the pasta special to try it out as it changes all the time and is always mind blowing. We've never had one meal here that wasn't amazing at least. The service is fast and friendly, and the atmosphere is super relaxed and inviting.
