One is in general population and one has special needs so I am familiar with the past and present principals. Both Mr Smith and Mr Platt were/are involved and knowledgeable about the kids in their care. It's refreshing. I always feels like my needs and requests are acknowledged and addressed. Mr Platt is so kind and caring, you couldn't ask for more. Mrs Skouson is the person you reach in the office and she is personable and knowledgeable and just kind. No matter the situation she sees it through with a smile in her voice. Having a child with special needs gives me a clear view of the inner workings of the school and it is exemplary! I see the time and care put into planning for the needs of the kids. The curriculum is veered toward each child's needs. I have kids with very different needs and I see the staff try to accommodate both as individuals. I am grateful to have had my kids in this school. If you happen to be in the schools district, take the time to really appreciate how lucky you are, because I have heard horror story's from families in other districts and am SO GRATEFUL I have no horror stories of my own. I'd be remiss if I did not mention Ms Sarah Hovenden, one of the Special Ed teachers. Her involvement, flexibility and patience with her kids shows in her ability to keep a calm pleasant environment for the neediest children. She is a Godsend!

If you are looking for a supportive and fair school environment, this may not be the right fit…read more While there are a few exceptions, my experience with specific teachers for both of my children was incredibly frustrating. Both of my kids were high-achieving GATE students, yet their grades dropped significantly upon enrolling at Dwyer. For example, one teacher gave my daughter an 89.9% in a class and rounded it down to a "B," dropping her GPA from a 3.8 to a 3.6.Additionally, the school's handling of citizenship grades and disciplinary rules felt targeted. My daughter, who maintained a 4.0, received an "N" in citizenship--disqualifying her from honors recognition--on the exact same day her teacher chased her down the hall for dress coding, despite other students wearing the same outfit without issue. When we transferred my son to another school, he immediately returned to earning "A's" in harder classes. Unfortunately, attempts to resolve these issues with the principal and the school board were met with indifference, and I know many other families with similar experiences. It appears this school environment only works well if parents are heavily involved in volunteering, staff gifting, and willing to accept unfair treatment without pushing back, as teachers may take frustrations out on the students.

Instead of protecting students, certain staff members contributed to an environment where bullying and emotional abuse were ignored--or worse, encouraged. When issues were brought to the attention of teachers or administrators, they were often dismissed, minimized, or turned back on the student. Some staff spoke in demeaning, sarcastic, or intimidating ways, which made students feel unsafe and powerless. Rather than intervening, adults in authority sometimes sided with aggressors or treated students as if they were the problem for speaking up. The lack of accountability was extremely damaging. Policies against bullying seemed to exist only on paper, with little to no follow-through. Students were left feeling unheard, anxious, and afraid to attend school. A school should be a place of learning and growth, not fear. Until this institution takes real responsibility, provides proper training for staff, and genuinely listens to students, it fails to meet even the most basic standards of care and safety.

05/09/2023 Ah, Taco…read moreTuesday. The pinnacle of every mediocre, sluggish, monotonous second day of the repetitive nature of school. Today in particular I did not have a club meeting for Illumination Foundation, as I usually do every Tuesday. Immediately when the bell rang indicating fourth period ended, I sped-walked to the outdoor lunch lines, hoping to snatch whatever was left of the infamous tacos. Thankfully, nowadays, there are always still a handful left even halfway into lunch. I frantically searched for my ID screenshot in the depths of my photos and thanked the cafeteria worker for the box of tacos as I quickly grabbed an apple juice carton. Finally, I am seated and can enjoy these bad boys. Sometime 10/08/2024 Woah. I never finished this review. I think it tasted good? This isn't even personal. Some teachers need to get fired. "Teaching" the same method of decades yet learning conditions were awful in one chemistry class to the point I could not pay attention without feeling stressed by the mess. Not only that, the teacher would introduce new concepts everyday with little to no elaboration, repetition, or awareness for learning styles. He presented summaries of things in the unit and the class was highly unorganized.. half the kids cheated in his class and they still cheat. They need to have a system for yearly quality checks for classrooms.. it benefits everyone. I'm not going to call out bad names. Mr. Lee, though, is one of the best chemistry teachers if not of the entire nation, the entire school. I transferred to his Chem Comm class after I had an F in Chemistry (now called chemistry honors) class. I missed school many times due to mental health and medical reasons, but his class never was distressing. Mind you, I told my counselor to transfer me out three weeks at the start of school.. where I already had a C.. she said no. Absurd. Spanish teachers are great. English teachers are efficient. Another thing is that when I was new to the MUN program in my freshman year, it was inefficient and I had a C average for my MUN class because organizing everything was hectic, teachers learning how to mix MUN with casual learning. This year's MUN was great and I think it's amazing, great investment. School food is good for "school food." I wouldn't recommend /this school/, but I would recommend some teachers here. Not only that, they didn't give my sister her graduation paper because her "name was too long." It's four syllables/words, last name six letters, the rest are each only three letters. So ridiculous. The staff is truly amazing--they go above and beyond to create a nurturing and engaging learning environment. One of the things I love most is how parent involvement is not only encouraged but truly what makes the school run. The community here is strong, and it shows in the events, programs, and overall positive atmosphere. A standout for us has been the BFF program, which fosters a love for reading in such a fun and interactive way. It's one of a kind in the Huntington Beach School District and has made such a difference in my child's confidence with books! Safety and support are top priorities here, and I can say without a doubt that my child feels both every single day. We seriously debated private school, but after completing our first year in kindergarten, I can confidently say that Moffett operates at the level of a private school--with the bonus of an incredible public school community. Choosing Moffett was the best decision for our family, and we can't wait for our second child to begin his Mustang journey! If you're looking for a school that feels like home, this is it!

The staff and students all were so kind and caring. After promotion I asked her what her favorite thing was about Mesa View and she, without hesitation, spoke of how inclusive and kind everyone was. The communication to parents was also very positive and consistent. Loved the experience for my daughter at Mesa.

I am disappointed with how the school year ended for my daughter…read more She started the year with excellent grades. Midway through the year, she became very ill, and her grades began to suffer. I worked closely with her to help bring them back up, and she was able to improve significantly. While not every grade returned to an A, she was no longer receiving failing grades in her academic classes. The exception was Physical Education. I was unaware that my daughter was struggling with feeling comfortable changing clothes in front of other students for PE. I regularly asked her about her PE grade, whether she was changing for class, and whether she was participating. She consistently told me that she was. When I eventually reached out to her PE teacher, Mr. Jones, to better understand the situation, I was informed that she was not changing for class and was only partially participating. After speaking with my daughter, she explained that she was participating in PE activities but was only partially changing because she felt insecure about changing in front of other girls. I immediately contacted the school and spoke with the principal to address the issue. While a solution was eventually arranged for her to change in the nurse's office, I was disappointed by the interaction. I felt that the conversation was rushed, and the principal's tone came across as irritated and lacking empathy for a situation that was clearly causing my daughter distress. As a parent seeking help for my child, I had hoped for more understanding and support. What concerns me most is that despite identifying the issue and putting a solution in place, my daughter still ended the class with an F. As a parent, there is only so much I can do when I am not physically present at school. I rely on teachers and school staff to communicate concerns when they arise so that we can work together to support students. I believe there were several missed opportunities for intervention. Why was I not contacted earlier when it became clear there was an ongoing issue? Why wasn't my daughter pulled aside to discuss what was preventing her from fully participating? Why weren't counseling resources or additional support offered if staff recognized that she was struggling? If lunch detention was being considered as a consequence, why wasn't parent communication considered as a solution? My daughter is a good student and not a troublemaker. This situation appears to have been driven by insecurity and discomfort, not defiance. I am disappointed that more effort was not made to understand the root cause of the problem and involve me sooner in finding a solution. I also cannot ignore the concern that my daughter may have been overlooked. As a parent, it is difficult not to question whether every student is receiving the same level of attention, support, and advocacy when struggles arise. Regardless of the reason, I believe my daughter deserved earlier intervention and better communication from the school. Parents and schools should be partners in helping students succeed. In this case, I feel that communication, empathy, and support from the school fell short, and I hope future students facing similar challenges receive earlier assistance and understanding.
