The bakery/cafe itself is small, but they are churning out some amazing pastries and goods in the space they have. Service was quick, no issues there. We grabbed: 1 Beef Empanada, Picadillo, Crusty Bread and an Apple Turnover that was bigger than my face!! All were tasty!! We did the tour at the chocolate factories and were told we could get 10% off with our sticker. We love Cuban sandwiches and thought why not give it a try! It's sort of a shack out back of Whetstone and almost hidden. There are only outside tables, but they have umbrellas for shade. I've had quite a few different versions of the Cuban sandwich and I'll say this one is in the top 4. The only negative I can say is that they used cold cut slices of ham and I've had shaved ham from from the whole ham on other versions. The pork was tender, and there was plenty of mustard, it was not andry sandwich. The bread was toasted crispy, but yet was still tender in the middle. We also had soup and it was pretty good as well. I have to admit, I was very skeptical when my mother in law suggested this place. Walking up, you'll see a very quaint building tucked away from the business of the street and the menu is limited, but WOW were we all so impressed with everything we tried!! Small hidden shop in the historical of St.Augustine with a small, but very tasteful variety of savory and sweet treats! We chose the chicken empanadas to try and sat at one of the picnic tables set outside of the store. While we were savoring our food we noticed a tray of sweets coming out of mystery door from across the store that we soon realized was the kitchen. We could not hold our curiosity after a second tray came out the same door! Something freshly baked had just made it to the shelf and we had to know why it was! Candy Apple turnover and Guava cheese turnover had just come out so we got one of each to go. I couldn't resist their picadillo option and also had one to go without rice (you have the option to add rice to your picadillo!). Well we ate both later on, first the picadillo was so flavorful! A thick ground beef broth that warm up the insides and made it feel like home. So good! As dessert we shared the apple turnover that had a caramelized topping... The turnover dough was perfectly flaky and it tasted like perfection! It had the perfect amount of butter and that did not take over the taste of the dough. We made it a point to visit Spanish Bakery based on the positive reviews here on Yelp. And as proven time and time again, the Yelp community hardly fails in their recommendations. Spanish Bakery serves rustic, traditional Spanish baked goods. They are quite reasonably priced and they have a picnic area under a tree where you can enjoy their offerings. We ordered the soup and the empanadas, The service was really quite friendly. When the lady overheard me say that I do not eat red meat and was ordering the sausage under the notion that it was made of pork, she kindly informed me of this and told me that her husband was at that very moment making chicken empanadas and asked me if I was willing to wait. Beef Empanadas at $3.50 each. It's a tiny little place behind the ice cream shop (hence the Harry Potter 1/2 address) and I'm so glad my son and I finally stopped in. A few years ago I passed by this shop and it was close to 3pm, so I missed out. But that delicious smell (must have been the bread or something) still lingered in my brain up till now. So I just had to try this place! I'm so glad I did! The empanada was cheap, delicious, and filling. My only complaint is that the crust seemed a tad dry. But otherwise, so good. They also offer different types of breads, some soups and stews (including one that was chili without the beans, cold gazpacho, and chicken noodle soup - all also $3.50 each). Spanish Bakery was a favorite stop on school field trips to St. Augustine. I was super sad when I heard they were having to close, but giddy like a school girl when I heard they were going to be able to remain open. Today it was the first stop on our snacking tour of Old St. Augustine. We ordered a chicken empanada and a soda. The crust of the empanada was not too thick and was cooked just right. But for me it was kind of plain, like it needed a touch of salt (or something) in the dough. The filling had good flavor and was piping hot. To get there you walk past a choclatier ( looked qite nice as well) and into an open area. The whole building cannot be more that 10 feet by 20 feet and all eating is done outside on picnic tables located under the trees. They had a lunch special - 1 main item, a roll, a cookie and a drink for $5.00. (Okay, I admit to also having a container of soup for $ 3.50 but I had an excuse - I was on vacation) Lunch for two for $ 13.30 - you can't beat that. Not gourmet but a nice place for a quick, inexpensive lunch.They are open from around 11 am to 2 pm. I have no idea where the kitchen is but it sure wasn't in the building. In fact, when we ordered we took the last two empanadas, causing the attendant to shout to no one in particular "I need more empanadas". the next thing you know, a tray of hot empanadas were handed through the back window. read more

It is small and quaint, and like most of the places around the area, it has a hint of "old worldliness" to it. I like how their breads are made the old fashioned way, and the bread itself is delicious and reasonably priced. This bakery had only outdoor seating which I didn't mind. I had the mentez and the Cuban sandwich. The Cuban sandwich was delicious with the spicy mustard sauce they had. It had a lot of meat in it and there was a proportionate amount of relish and cheese in it. The hot sauce also tasted pretty good with the sandwich as well. The mentez sandwich was alright, it was kinda too sweet with the meat which was okay but after a while I got bored of eating it and took the sandwich apart and only ate the meat and then the bread separately. Everything tasted better when it was separated because I personally didn't like the blend of the glaze with the meat. the glaze and bread tasted good together and the meat tasted good by itself or with the mustard sauce. read more

Today my wife and daughter and about 250 kids and parents went to the area for a school trip and the school decided to have lunch here...... the lady behind the counter was RUDE and was annoyed by all the kids that pre paid for their lunches ...my daughter asked for ham sandwich and when my wife saw it was the wrong and it was turkey she gave my wife attitude! If I could give negative stars for customer service I would. We live about 30 minutes south of St. Augustine and bring all of our visiting friends and family up there. We typically delight in showing off our favorite shops and restaurants, however this past weekend was by far the worst experience we have had there in 2 years of visiting. We stopped in at the Spanish Bakery on 1/6/18 around 2pm, hoping to grab a hot loaf of bread. While we and our out of town guests were waiting in line a young man carried in a steaming cast-iron pot of rice. After he left, we overheard the customer in front of us be so bold as to ask for some rice in her chicken and rice soup. She asked politely only to have the young blond girl behind the counter snap that she didn't have any to which the customer replied back "Didn't he just bring you some?" "I can't, I already made it and the rice goes on the bottom." By made it, I think she meant she filled a ladle full of broth and dumped it into a cup. After some grumbling and eye rolling she gave the customer the rice in a separate cup so she wasn't inconvenienced by needing to lift a ladle twice. Everyone in line was horrified by the way the bakery employee behaved with the customer. Next it was our turn and we bought the last loaf of bread and asked if there might be more fresh bread later. We were told to check back in an hour or two. No problem, we shopped for a couple of hours and checked back. When asked if the bread had been delivered yet the only answer received was "We don't have any." When we tried asking if it had come and was sold out, or we should try back again after dinner, she snapped "We don't have any." again, and wouldn't/couldn't answer the question. The rude employee was reason we had come back to check later because that is what she had told us to do. If answering questions from customers is too taxing, she probably shouldn't suggest they come back and check later. Maybe she was cold, maybe she was tired. Actually it really doesn't matter, cold, tired, hungover, sick - whatever. If you work with the public you suck it up and try to smile, and if you can't manage to be friendly, try and shoot for not being outright rude. I have never before been embarrassed to bring friends to any of the local businesses, but I can promise I will never go or bring others again if that young 'lady' is behind the counter. The food at the Spanish Bakery is great but it's not good enough to offset the attitude it is served with. By far the worst experience I have ever had in St. Augustine. read more

I enjoy coming here when visiting st augustine. The prices are good especially for combo meal which included a drink and a cookie. On a brisk sightseeing day my duo stopped for picadillo combos. The dish was yummy and perfectly seasoned. The bakery was all out of fresh bread which was disappointing but in no way a deal breaker. I do agree with Teresa's review regarding unpleasant service. Being from Barcelona, Spain I am extremely disappointed and sad to see how the owners of this place abuse of the ignorance of others. Most of the menu items aren't Spanish at all (empanadas has never been a distinctive food of the Spanish gastronomy). Smoked hot dog wrapped in a pastry? Two out of 5 soups are indeed Spanish, but Chilli? Wtf seriously have some respect. Oh and of course don't forget the Cuban sandwich or the Cuban pork. VERY SPANISH. Just because they have a chorizo and manchego sandwhich does not turn the place into a Spanish restaurant. (I think it's the crappiest chorizo I've ever had). What I find insulting is that St Augustine is a location directly related to Spanish heritage, hence people will assume whatever they eat with the Spanish name before it, is actual Spanish food. What a terrible way to promote your business. Owners are probably not even Spanish (most likely Cuban). If you want a cheap bite, go ahead and eat there but by no means think you're getting a real Spanish food. read more

Great place for a quick bite while touring historic downtown Saint Augustine. The shop is located in a historic kitchen building while their kitchen is located in the adjacent historic house.
