The short: Just imagine a subway but they have ice cream and they don't shorten you on quality or amount of toppings The longer: Set one day to stop here after a workout at the gym, walked in and was surprised that the aesthetic. It was full of retro, lighting, booths, and decor. And asking the girl at the front for the best sandwich or the most popular one and she recommended the turkey bacon avocado. I ended up getting an 8 inch of that with some miscellaneous toppings with a drink and a snickerdoodle cookie. I was impressed by the amount of toppings such as bacon and avocado that were put on the sandwich, in a good way. In the end was actually pretty good. I do realize that at these kind of places the sandwich being good depends on what you put on it but nonetheless, I enjoyed my sandwich and cookie while reading a book in the corner. While comparison to Subway still stands it is more pricey, the combo with the eight inch sandwich ran me about $18, so wow good is not the front runner in terms of value. It's like walking into a Home Ec class set in a 50s diner. The kids working were friendly, but the environment was chaotic, with a confusing ordering process and different kids trying to duplicate what had already been asked/completed. So, the process took some time. Think, basically the opposite process of Jimmy John's, but more entertaining. The sandwich itself (turkey bacon avocado) was pretty good- half an avocado was scooped out right onto my sandwich, and the bacon was fried up right then. And the pricing is very reasonable. This is a local ma & pop type place, so you have to set your expectations. Everything is homemade and fresh (some is frozen, but not in a mass produced crappy quality way). If you're just there for a cold cut sandwich you'll he through fast. If you want a hot sandwich, expect a 15-20 minute wait while they heat up the meat on the one tiny grill top. It took half an hour for them to make my husbands cheesesteak (20 mins) and then my Reuben (10 mins). They could only do one at a time. They meat was good quality and frozen, I assume because they don't make enough of them to keep ingredients. They did cook the fresh veggies right there, though, and it all tasted good. Spanish is located in a shopping center just off the main road. It's surrounded by stores so be on the lookout. Thankfully there's plenty of parking as this area gets busy during lunch time. Walking in the space is open and the folks making subs are friendly. The menu is simple and they will give you all the time you need to pick out toppings. Decided to go with a classic Italian on white. They really pile it on so if you get the big size sub come hungry. They have a nice combo deal that comes with a drink, chips, and a 20oz fountain drink. Overall a great value, no frills, deli serving up fantastic sandwiches. Perfect lunch option. read more

Spankys has been a favorite for over 10 years. Love the food and love the environment, however for the last couple years it seems like all consistency is gone, so I get a very different sandwich every visit. There seems to be no specific direction on how to put together the sandwich, so I end up redoing it at home every time, after getting different amounts of every item I ask for. Again, love the food, but it feels like a gamble of what kind of sandwich I'm going to get. Hoping that maybe some consistency can come back! After living in Davis county for 25 years, I tried Spanky's for the first time today. The Mexican style chicken soup was flavorful, with plenty of corn, red beans and tomatoes. A bargain at under $2.50. And the turkey bacon avocado sandwich I had on wheat bread was tasty too. As far as the soup goes. 5 stars. I got the 12oz chilli. It cost $4.60. The beans were perfectly cooked, plenty of meat, good broth, came out piping hot. If you like hot sauce, there's 20 bottles of all kinds of hot sauce at the condiment station. So if you're the type of person that only likes chilli with a specific sauce, they probably have it. I haven't tried these, but they also serve sandwiches, cookies, side snacks, fountain drinks, and ice cream. This store is run by teenagers, so expect teenage service. If you're getting a sandwich except a long wait time. They seem to work slow and lots of people waiting around. They got my soup right away though. read more

Where do I start? Location is good with lots of parking. A manager sweeping and cleaning up. Two people behind the counter. Both on their phones. UGH. Not very enthusiastic that they had a customer. The girl who helped us was very nice but super soft spoken. Did not know how the turkey was prepared, just that it was in a crock pot. The sandwhich and bread was ok, beats a Subway, but that's not saying much. The cheap labor preteen "sandwhich artists" clearly don't enjoy their jobs and would obviously rather be somewhere else. There was a lack of teamwork, which resulted in a 15 min line wait with only two people in front of me, while two employees stood around. I used to come to Spanky's as a child but hadn't been because we no longer live in the area. We were in the neighborhood at a Dr. Appointment and decided to stop in for lunch. We were offered the student special which was perfect! A sandwich, drink, and chips or cookie all for 5 dollars! I got a basic ham and cheese with lettuce and pickles, toasted. It was delicious! The cookie was soft and fresh, and we were able to refill our drinks. The restaurant wasn't too busy, but enough people filled the tables so you knew it was a good choice. I will most likely return the next time I have to come up for another appointment. The employees were friendly and got our food out to us fresh, and quick! If you want to feel nostalgic, and by nostalgic I mean feeling like you are in your underbudgeted Elementary school cafeteria, whilst also receiving the same quality of food, then this restaurant is for you. The service was good. I will say my mother enjoyed her meatball sandwich. I however thought the food was sickly (I got the BBQ Turkey). If this restaurant improved in cleanliness and it's equipment it may have potential. A 5 star rating for SLC - -as good as it gets for Salt Lake City (which requires you to "bump" everything up a star relative to bigger cities). I come here at least once a week, sometimes twice a week. The staff here is quite friendly and they make tasty sandwiches. You can pick up a 6" pastrami sandwich for about $5.39 + tax. They have nice sandwich and soup combos that run about $6.75 (sandwich, soup, and drink). There isn't a ton of ambience here, but it is North Salt Lake City. Expect to see local workers, high school students (avoid from noon to 1 to beat the student rush) and plump blue eyed stay at home Mormon moms ordering sandwiches for 3-5 blue eyed rugrats. Decent view of the NSL hills from some of the tables. Great ice cream here for $1.15 a scoop. Make sure to get a "Spanky's card" -- after 10 purchased sandwiches, they will hook you up with a freebie. And apparently, you'll get spanked???? Looking for a great sandwich with plenty of meat and toppings at a reasonable price, this is the place. Spanky's is a local shop, not a chain, that is always a bonus. I use to eat at Spanky's weekly when they had a shop in Kaysville that was in route to my home, now that they are in Bountiful and out of my way it has been years since I had one of their awesome sandwiches. Stopped in for lunch it was a bit busy but they had two people making sandwiches so the line moved quick. I ordered a number 7 which comes with Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef and Pastrami. Unlike the chains where the more meats you order the less of each you get, Spanky's piles on plenty of each meat resulting in a 6 inch sandwich weighing in well over a pound. The meats are good quality and the bread is very good. I can't speak for the veggies since I went with meat and cheese only. They do have plenty of condiment options including mayo, 3-4 kinds of mustard, etc. For an awesome, plentiful, tasty reasonably priced sandwich Spanky's is hard to beat. read more

For a non-chain sub joint, you can't beat spankys. Great prices and variety. Staff are always friendly and fast in keeping the line moving. Our whole family was in depression when it closed for a short season. The owners retired and finally their grandson decided to take it over. Bountiful, you are lucky to a have a great sub shop that is not a chain. Stopped in for a late lunch, about 2:30 on a Saturday. I was immediately drawn to the meatball sub. Being somewhat of a meatball snob (yes, I come from an Italian family, and my mom made great meatballs!), I always like to compare them. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good Spanky's meatball sub was. I actually had it on a ciabatta roll (equivalent to a 6 inch sub roll) which was fresh, soft, and delicious. With 5 meatballs, this was 25% more than a Subway sub. The sauce was very tasty, meatballs very good, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. I also liked the fact that you can get a 6, 8, or 12 inch sub. I will definitely be back when I get to Bountiful again and will try more items, especially the soups if this weather continues to be cold!
