This little sandwich shop is a gem! It is just down the street from where I work and I have driven past it a million times! Today was my first time ordering from there. Definitely will not be the last! First, they are incredibly affordable. What they charge for a full sandwich is what a lot of places charge for a half! Second, yum! I bought two sandwiches, a BLT with provolone on sourdough bread, and a chicken salad with cheddar on sourdough bread and sprouts added. I ordered two since I ate lunch early and wanted a "just in case" sammy in case I get hungry later! Yay for real sourdough bread! I have been disappointed by other places because the sourdough just tastes like white bread. Not the case here! I ate the BLT sandwich first and it hit the spot! The veggies were so fresh! I think I probably would have wanted a little more bacon, but it is just $1 to add extra. I only took a bite of the chicken salad sandwich to taste it because I was full after the BLT! That was good as well! I think next time I will add cucumbers for that extra crunch. Or even some bacon.... Mmmmm..... For a good straightforward sandwich at an excellent price, try Caruso's. Pretty basic sandwich but sometimes that's what you want. Not every meal needs to be some gourmet experience. That's what you get here. A nice selection of comfort sandwiches. Filled just about right, not too little nor too much either. This is a place where you can get in and out for half hour lunch break. Although some hot fried food like fries would be nice or some dessert, but that would cut into the speed of this place. Came in on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Lots of people ahead of us but the line moved pretty quick. I got one of the toasted sandwiches on the Italian roll. I also got two cookies for the road. This was a fun place to get a sandwich during the workday. In the more industrial part of town, it was nice to go in and see classic food being served over the sandwich counter. It isn't super modern inside, but it feels cozy. The staff were so nice and worked their long list of orders quickly. I got the Italian dip, and it was fantastic! It was served hot and was complete with the au jus. I don't suggest taking your food to go, because the moist meat will make your bread super soggy. Best little local sandwich place I've found. There is a 6.95 special that includes a full sandwich, chips, and a small fountain drink. The protein changes every day and it's always my go-to. There's a variety of sandwiches. There was a special of a green chili sandwich on the board. Probably a limited edition. The best thing is the punch card. It makes you want to keep coming back. Caruso's Deli is somewhat of a hidden gem. I never would have found it had I not been asked to review it. After tasting The Godfather (and my husband's Po Boy) I would most definitely return. And they seem to close occasionally during those posted hours - I went by on a Friday when they should have been open and the doors were locked and no one answered the phone. We happily drive about 10 miles to eat at Caruso's. My wife used to work near there but she doesn't anymore. Still, we don't mind at all driving past a lot of other sandwich shops to see Maria and enjoy the food there. Plus, when you eat there, you are truly supporting a "local" who has invested her life in this economy. I use to go to Caruso's twice a week for several years, back at the turn of the millennium, as I worked nearby. The owners Joy, Steve, and their boys Stevie and Dave were always friendly and welcoming. Greeting my like Norm from Cheers. Their sandwiches were fantastic. The Godfather was my personal favorite, but their daily special was always a deal. I hadn't been for several years after a change of jobs. When I returned, I found it had been sold to new owners. The sourdough loaf had changed, and some small changes to the menu. But for the most part, they kept it fairly close to what I remember. I tried the mushroom melt, and it was good. Their sourdough is softer than the previous owners had. It's in an industrial complex, next to Quality Tire, a commercial truck tire shop. Seating can be limited during the lunch rush. read more

We two went to Caruso's with a $10 Restaurant.com coupon and ordered 2 SPECIALs of corned beef sandwiches, chips and drinks, spending around $25. When I went to pay the man told me that he was not accepting Restaurant.com coupons any more... he had had to many coupon users and was sick of them. (Why not just remove Caruso's from the Restaurant.com site?) Then the cranky man decided that he would do me a special favor and accept this one last coupon from me. When we started eating we realized that we had received 2 roast beef sandwiches. When I mentioned this the man told me that "roast beef and corned beef were the same, just with more pepper". Despite this being a local sub shop (the use of the word "deli" is a misnomer), it's regrettably substandard in nearly every way, from the chalked out and usually illegibly scribbled menu, which is not helped by the location, which is shrouded in darkness to the food itself, which is a lot of bread and not a lot of meat for approx. double what you would spend at Subway for a much larger sandwich. It's not like the cuts are of a superior quality, especially and this is notable several notches below Grove Market, where you can get a gigantic sandwich for that same money. At Caruso's, you also generally get to choose from the same assortment of bagged chips at a Subway also and there's the same type of soda fountain. Inside, despite the parking lot frequently being full, is always somewhat empty, but it's not an enjoyable place to eat, especially. The staff seemed to feel that I should somehow know what I wanted to order and was, to put it charitably, quite impatient with questions about what comprised the various sandwiches. I went there again 3 or 4 times anyway, hoping to figure out exactly why the place was so well-spoken of and while the service varied depending on who was there, little else ever did. For a sandwich that overall is about half the size and twice the price of one of the $5 footlongs at Subway, it's just pointless to return. Caruso's Deli has been my go to deli for over ten years. I travel a ton for work around North America and Caruso's still holds the top sandwich shop spot in my book. The staff is awesome and always remember my name. They use great cut of meat and the bread is always fresh. The "PO Boy" will make you believe there is a god. The Pepper Melt w/ Garlic is the perfect sandwich for thought cold snow days. I have never left here hungry. I recommend everyone to eat here at least once, because you will return. read more
