My friends suggested we meet up at Spanky's a few nights ago and I was kinda like..Spanky's lol! Anyway, I've been reading some of the reviews and they really aren't that flattering. My experience wasn't bad at all. Our service was good. We were quickly seated and served. Our drinks never went empty. Our food came up fast and hot. I had the turkey gorgonzola sandwich on toasted ciabatta, it was topped with candied walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette-not bad at all, but pretty bad for my hips though. My friend had a wrap which was huge and she commented it was quite tasty. The boys got sliders and fries for $5.95. Pretty good deal. We also split a basket of homemade chips with some sort of spicy ranch dip. I'm a sucker for homemade chips, they didn't disappoint. Not sure where all the negative feedback is coming from, but I will just say that my experience was quite different from most apparently. read more

Can you say "Bloody Mary Bar"? I had the basic french toast, and it was good, exactly what I wanted. My husband had some benedict thing with pork. He was happy. Best part, it was reasonably priced - damn near cheap, even! Parking can be a challenge if you haven't been here, and it is definitely a sports bar/campus diner vibe, but look beyond that, and you can get a great meal. read more

Spanky's is a nice diversion from the typical college bar. It is a college bar in a lot of ways (decor, noise level, crowd etc.), but the bar fare includes some non-standard tasty sounding fried items and a black bean burger. Also, at the moment there is a 2$ per pint pumpkin bear available. That's right 2 dollars! I don't know if I'd go back without the 2$ beer special, but the experience wasn't bad. Today I tried Spanky's near DU. I really don't have anything good to report. I had a burger with fries and a milk shake and my bill was over $14. The bun overwhelmed the patty and it was stale. The bacon was undercooked and the fries lacked flavor. In the bathroom the paper towel dispensor was falling off the wall, AND it was empty.... I have not been there in a while and now I know why. read more

I was afraid of this place when it was called just "Spanky's," it kind of gave me the heebie-jeebies, and I avoided it for two years. However, the re-branded and re-modeled "Urban Roadhouse" is pretty great. I've been here on a number of occasions for brunch, the first time when the over-rated brunch place down the street (rhymes with "smelly") had waits of over an hour. Subsequently, I came back because I liked it. I've been very satisfied with the food, both tasty and unique. If the service were a bit better (not terrible, but not great) and the coffee came more frequently, this place would be a five star establishment. UPDATE: I made it in for an evening visit recently, and they knocked it out of the park. Service was great, drinks were reasonably priced, and the apps were delicious. I'll be making more frequent visits here going forward. read more

What an awful experience! I recently moved to Denver and have been looking for a regular spot to catch Bronco games. I have tried a few places downtown but thought this week, I'd try something a little closer to home. When I walked in, I was by myself and told the man seating me that I was here to watch the game and didn't care where I sat as long as I had a view of the TV. He seats me and walks away. I order a coke and a mountain burger from the waitress who was less than friendly (keep in mind, this is still the first quarter of the game). At the top of the 2nd quarter, without asking me if there was anything else I needed, the waitress brings me my check. I thought it was odd, but gave her my credit card and proceeded to watch the game. She gets me an ice water, runs my card, and brings back the receipt for me to sign. I sign it for a $10 tip since I figured I would be there for 3 hours, I need to pay the waitress for 3 hours worth of work. From the top of the 2nd quarter, through halftime, and the top of the third q- not once did an employee ask me 'Is there anything else I can get for you?'. Not once was my water refilled despite the fact that I sat there eating the ice. In the middle of the third quarter, I crossed out the $10 tip I had left her. I was planning on ordering one of their milkshakes for me and a meal for my roommate to go but since the waitress seemed to be in such a rush to get me out the door- I figured that they didn't want my money. Which is fine, I didn't want to give it to them after being treated so rudely. I have exstensive experience in watching football games in bars. I don't own a TV because the only thing I watch is football... The good sports bars know that if you come in wearing a jersey and ask to be able to see the TV, that individual is going to be around for a while, spending money for a while, and isn't the one you want to rush out the door. Spanky's hasn't learned this yet, apparently. I can handle anything from a business- dirty and mediocre food, both of which are aspects of Spanky's- bad customer service is not one of them. OH! They are also very expensive. $10 for a burger that was burned? You better have a smile on your face to make up for it. Skip this place, especially if you plan on hanging around longer than half an hour. There is a bar in Englewood near the civic center called Blondie's Firehouse. Great staff, fantastic food, inexpensive, and clean. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Not your typical bar and grill - in reality it's a gourmet menu with the quality/flavor to show. We've had almost everything on the menu including breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will recommend every time! Would encourage folks to stop by. read more

Spanky's has a special place in my heart. Mainly because I am a DU student and this is one of the sports bars and restaurants right next to the campus. The atmosphere is crazy when it's a DU hockey game night and this of course should come as no surprise, as the establishment is basically a shrine to DU hockey. The food is decent and is greatly priced. You can easily get a satisfying burger with fries (or my personal fav; frings), but it is by no means the best burger you can get in Denver. I think one of the highlights though are the specials they have with beer. It is ridiculous how cheap you can get tasty beer here and is no wonder why it can become chaotic on a game night. Overall, pretty good and a decent place to go if you're a Pioneers fan in the mood for a college atmosphere. read more

They have a great covered patio with spritzers for the hot days. Our server was good, attentive and very personable. We went in for breakfast and the food was ok. The menu is pretty interesting, lots of choices. I had the meat lovers frittata. It was plainly over cooked, eggs and meat were tough. I felt I needed to leave a review after seeing all the negatives comments regarding the service... Okay, so as the night went on and Spanky's got more crowded, the quality of service did decrease. On the other hand, our waitress was very attentive to our drinks and cleared our food away promptly. Furthermore, she left us alone to our drinks and conversation, something I actually really enjoy. When I drink with friends, I don't need a server constantly coming up and checking on me. What I need them to do is refill my drinks and let me chat with my friends. On that note, my boyfriend and I visited Spanky's Thursday night to grab a couple drinks and get a late dinner. I give the place 3 stars for this reason: the drinks were great ($1 Bud for the boy), but our server didn't tell us my Blue Moon was on special until AFTER we had paid. I feel like they definitely should have told us the drink specials without having to find out from the other patrons, and this annoyed me. The food was nothing special, just bar food, and it doesn't get marked down for this. I'm actually really impressed they had a black bean burger substitute for me! However, they do get marked down for how crappy my boyfriend felt the day after ate there... I don't know whether or not the meat was cooked well enough or what, but whatever he ate at Spanky's did not sit well with him. The atmosphere was all right-- lots of undergrad bar hooligans there when we first arrived at 9, and as the night progressed, older, 30-something groups started to show up. We left around 11 after our dinner and 2-3 beers. All in all, nothing special. Good drink specials (if they tell you), decent food. I might order an appetizer the next time I go, but I doubt my boyfriend would order food from them again. read more

The service is horrible, horrible and horrible! The fake tan valley girls need to stop talking about face book and their co-workers and pay attention to their customers. It took our waitress 20 minutes after serving our beer to take our order. DO NOT ORDER THE FRIED PICKLES!!!!!!! They are strips of pickles heavily salted then dipped in this salty batter, fried and then sprinkled with some more salty concoction. Absolutely disgusting. Food is pretty pricey with average taste. My friend and I were there for an hour and a half and by the time the food got there, we were not even hungry, ask the waitress whenever she decided to stop talking to her co-workers to give us a box and the tab, cause we decided to take it to go. Just horrible. The good thing was that my burger was great and the sweet potato fries were yummy, my friends wings were eh so-so. The waitress was able to return the nasty fried pickles and exchanged it with hummus that was mediocre. Great place to order out or go there for a beer. They need to work on their service or hire better waitresses. I hope our waitress appreciated her 1.25 tip on a 40.00 bill, and if she didn't then that her bad. Tips are only given with attentive service. Sorry she failed. read more

Geez... What is it with the 3 star ratings? Ridiculous. Downright goofy. This place is a terrific find. The food is creative, fresh and tasty. Best restaurant within a 5 mile radius and that's saying something. Even the music is hip yet understated. Try the hangover helper or the green eggs and ham (a whole package of fresh fresh basil). If April is in the house, make sure to get in her section. She rocks. Definitely the best brunch south of Colfax. This is 5 star food with a 6 star vibe. read more

It's a burger bar, plain and simple. The sandwiches are good, but nothing special. Plenty of beer. 2-for-1 coupons available. But the main thing that only gets it 2 stars is the service, which is slow as h***. On numerous occasions we've waited 15minutes or more to be waited on, drink refills don't happen and takes even longer to get through the "paying the check" process. Don't want to end on a downer so i'll say that the onion rings are really good. Seriously, they are...damn, i'm hungry now. read more

This place is so quaint! I want to come back again often. We had the cherry baked brie...delicious, next time I will ask then to warm the cherries. We tried a cherry mule...super refreshing! The sausauge and funghi pizza and the SW burger were so good and fresh. Such creatively delicious food ideas/combinations. I was visiting Denver recently with my family to celebrate my brother graduating from DU and we stopped here for lunch before the ceremony. We were walking past on our way to Chipotle and the smells coming from the restaurant made us stop dead in our tracks and go in for lunch! We had a nice comfy booth in the corner and our server, Taylor B, was great from start to finish! She was friendly and accommodating. About half way through lunch, before our food arrived, we noticed we were running short on time and my Dad mentioned to Taylor that we were in a bit of a rush. Our food came out only a few minutes later and Taylor took it a step further and while we were enjoying our meal dropped the check without us having to ask for it! The food was just as great as the service!! We had Edamame as an appetizer and it was delicious! They use a curry spice on it that was so unique and yummy!!! My Mom and I split a Chicken and Brie sandwich that was amazing!! Grilled chicken, fig preserve, sliced apples and Brie cheese!! YUM!!! The staff was on top of everything and really friendly! The manager had his hands in everything from greeting us at the door, running food, bussing tables and he was back at the front to say goodbye to us. You could tell he cared about the restaurant as a whole and making sure every table was happy and taken care of! I just wish I lived closer so I could visit this restaurant more often!! This place is an old DU standby, but seems to have lost its allure for the local student crowd over the years. The menu here is nothing special, it's just your average american fare, but I've found the burgers here are quite good. If you're here you really can't go wrong in choosing a good burger off the menu. Spanky's also offers a full bar which is nice and caters to the occasional student/alumni crowd on a DU or professional event sports night. The happy hour (well, happy hours) here is also a nice deal with $1 bud/bud lights all day and $3 domestics after 9pm. The catch about Spanky's is the delicious $3 burgers after 9pm, no one can really beat this deal. The catch-22 is that most people can't seem to wait until 9pm for dinner. So in this case, the nighthawk gets the worm. If you're in the area and looking for a good place to grab a burger and not looking for anything exotic or non-american then I'd say take a chance it Spanky's, it most likely won't let you down. Also, I forgot to mention that the wait staff is always very friendly and accommodating. One-and-a-half thumbs up! read more

This place has lots of cool and creative menu options (I particularly recommend the 50/50 burger which is half ground bacon and half ground beef). There are also cool things such as Italian fries and truffle fries. There's even a peanut butter jelly burger, if you're into that. The happy hour is fantastic and super cheap. The food, I must say, is not incredible and is no better than a chillis or applebees. The wait staff was super friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. Overall a nice place to visit, but not high on my list of recommendations in Denver. read more

Spanky's is a strange name for a restaurant. That's what I thought when my friend clarified what Spanky's was. The atmosphere reminds me of your typical spirts bar/Hooters type because of the low lights and TV's everywhere. I've gone twice and both times were really different. The first time was late afternoon and we only ordered appetizers. Everything went well. However, more recently when I went for lunch there seemed to be only one person serving the entire inside area. This prolonged our lunch since we had to wait a considerable amount of time to place our order, get served, and pay. I had also ordered my burger well done and did not receive it as ordered. I'm not sure if this was a one time mess up, it was overall okay but it won't be my first choice when eating off campus. read more

This place is okay. Typical bar-and-food-slash-college-hangout. Not overly thrilled about it, especially since Yelp has indoctrinated me with the best of the best in Denver. I can see this place over capacity with eager, drunk DU students puking over the flimsy, plastic patio guard rails. Not very attractive if you're over using websites like Match.com to find a bar to commit to. I don't care if I'm in law school, I'm going to make it a point to hit up places like the Irish Snug and Horseshoe Lounge instead of here. read more

If anyone has been to the Dusty Boot, this menu will look familiar. It is owned by the same company. While the food is "OK" nothing special but just OK, the atmosphere sucks. I came here with a friend because my mom was in the hospital nearby and we wanted to chill and have a beer and some wings and stuff. The 2 times we were here it was DEAD,,,shouldve told us something. no life in the place, small and just not a fun place to hang out and people watch. I wont be back here unfortunately. Sooooo many other great sportsbars around. read more
