I've been here a few times and really enjoy it. On a nice warm Denver day it is great to sit out on the patio. They have a great happy hour selection as well. The nachos were delicious and the beer was cold. I also had dinner here with friends. The cheeseburger and fries were delicious. The price is really favorable as well. If you're looking to watch one of Colorado sports teams then you will always find a fair amount of fans cheering the team on as they watch on the TV screens throughout the restaurant. read more

Must have been short staffed, I don't know. But the food is typically good here, it was eh this time. Sat with no water for 20-25 mins, bartender was apparently also the server but there was barely 10 people in the entire restaurant. We were staying in an AirBnB nearby while visiting our daughter at University of Denver. We flew in and were starving and this place looked good so we tried it. We LOVED it! My only complaint was that it didn't have much atmosphere (not cozy, uncomfortable table and chairs) The service was GREAT! Bailey was our server and he was very attentive, knowledgeable, helpful and patient. The food was absolutely delicious and the cocktails and beer were great too. Ahhh yes, Spanky's. Nothing quite hits the spot like this classic roadhouse. I ordered the so called "Hangover Helper" which was a mashup of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs or however you like them made, caramelized onions, and jalapeños. Might I say it was the best meal of the week! The staff was very generous and did not give me any problems. Food was served quickly and came with a temperature where I could dig in immediately yet nowhere near cold. The atmosphere gave me the "drinks are on me" type of feel. Tv's were stationed all over the place with each one showing nothing but football. Where am I, heaven?! Although it's not heaven it is a terrific establishment to visit for just about any meal. This review is only for the atmosphere and drinks. I didn't get any food but hope to come back to try some. They had a pretty decent happy hour but I opted for the Herradura (my favorite) that was being promoted. I don't like the margaritas with all the syrups but they did a great job with this one keep that light and allowing the taste of the tequila to come through. I was very impressed, actually. As for the place itself, it sort of reminds me of a place I'd find in the 70s (think: retro / hipster but nice). I was actually impressed at how nice it was inside, it was a bit smaller than I thought, and it had a fair amount of TV's if you want to watch a game. The crowd in the evening seemed to be mostly business people. Being so close to the university, it was crazy not to see any college students but apparently that's just the case. In town from Seattle and want to have a good breakfast. Spanky's Yelp ratings are pretty good and I believe they are well deserved. For having the roadhouse theme going on, the place it clean, pretty quiet, and certainly ready to roll for breakfast (utensils and menus waiting, wait staff prompt, etc). I had the privilege of being served by Mary, who is relatively new, but very attentive, answered all questions due to my dietary needs, and kept warming my coffee as needed. The staff all seemed to just be having a good time and get along very well with each other. I came in the morning so the covered, open-air, outdoor seating with the misters blowing was a bit much at that time. It is supposed to get hot in a few days and that outdoor seating will be awesome. Inside, they have tvs galore to watch, which is great during the summer olympics. I chose the Roadhouse Benedict. I will say I did not study the menu in great detail so was pleasantly surprised with the twist they put on this benedict. The eggs were poached to perfection, the biscuit was very good, hollandaise was just right as well. Better beney than I have had at many breakfast shops, or even fancier restaurants for that matter. Served with lightly seasoned (and slightly oily) tater tots. Tasty. Also had a tasty and light gluten free pancake on the side with the 3 flavors of syrup. All very well done. Prices, I believe the prices are very fair for the quality and quantity of food. Definitely worth a repeat trip in my mind. read more

So, I ordered from here off of Postmates, was not familiar with it at all and we were very pleased. The amount of food you get for the cost is great, everything we ordered tasted really fresh. We split a burger on their special bun, it was really good, but they had a huge selection of buns, and all types of "burgers". And not knowing the burger came with anything we ordered a side of Tator tots. We still have a lot of those and the fries that came with the burger left, so they are not stingy. We will Def order from here again and try something different. They had lots of good options and some really good looking salads and sandwiches. I would absolutely say give them a try. I would recommend expanding the kids menu bc I feel like this is a family friendly place, at least early dinner or lunch. read more

We came in later Saturday afternoon. The place was pretty busy but we were able to get a table without any wait. We ordered drinks and food. I had the Jam Burger and my husband built his own burger. The portion size of the burgers was great, the ingredients were fresh and our burgers were cooked as we ordered. However, both felt that burger patty itself was lacking in any seasonings - salt and pepper. The toppings on the burger were delicious but the meat still needed to be seasoned. The tots were really tasty and nice and crunchy on the outside, and perfect on the inside. One our friends had a chicken sandwich w/fried brussell sprouts which she loved. Came here for a school event two Fridays ago. We rented out the patio and were the only ones out there. I was also part of the last five who left from the patio, meaning no one was out there when they were cleaning up the area. I realized all too late that I had left my 20oz Mint Hydroflask with a Sports Cap there. When I called the first time the woman who answered said all too quickly that she hadn't seen it and her manager didn't see anything. I called back again the next day and the guy who answered seemed to take his time looking in the back for it, then offered to take my name and number in case it turned up. I was recently told by a friend who ate there that they saw a Mint Hydroflask behind the bar, but I haven't received a call from them, so I'm going to hope that it's not mine. While I know it was my fault that I left it there and I take full responsibility for that. I have lost so much faith in humanity because no one has turned it in and called me. I just want to put it out there that if someone did find it, I'd really appreciate them returning it. I'm not quite sure why someone would want my water bottle with all my germs on it (as I maybe washed it once or twice since I got it a few months ago), but I can understand how enticing it can be to see something left and want to take it. I'd just really appreciate if it were returned. The two stars is because their happy hour is decent and they're just a short walk away from campus. read more

Great Roadhouse Bar! Located near DU. The staff is 2nd to none. Food is wonderful. Drinks/food are reasonably priced, great selection. They have their own parking lot (rare for downtownish feeling pub) We went in for a quick bite, stayed for a few hours. The Manager Katie is super cool, John was tending bar, again super cool. This is a smaller, quaint bar with 6 flat screens that are easy to see from any seating. There are a dozen or so bar stools at a retro/contemporary bar. Very comfortable seating. There are 8 bar tables that are 3 feet around and seat 4 people comfortably, and 6 booths that are big, 6 person booths and equally comfortable. Bathrooms are super clean. The whole place is clean and casual. They make custom milk shakes... the running joke is... just as you are leaving ask them to make 6 or 7 shakes to go. They get a big laugh from that. But, they politely ask if you really want them. Great place. You'll be pleasantly surprised and want to come back. read more

The happy menu is loaded with affordable deliciousness - bomb green chili cheese fries, brussels, tacos, and wings with several flavor options. The atmosphere is young and lively - maybe a bit divey. I love the food and drinks at spankys, but lately the service has been slipping. I was seated and got my drinks pretty quickly, but after that it started to fall apart. I ordered the "French onion dip" with my mother, which we both assumed would be a sandwich. We were not told it was a creamy onion dip with a side of chips even though we did ask for clarification. When I mentioned this, we were told "oh that happens all the time" by more than one server. It was not offered to be taken off of our bill. I had to track down our server to order an actual sandwich, and after that we didn't see her again and had to order another round of drinks through a different server. 5/5 food, 1/5 for service. If you come here don't bother with a table just sit at the bar or order to go. read more

This place is a little misleading from the outside; it's much nicer on the inside. I was expecting dilapidated tables, worn seats and a broke down bar. So DO NOT let the appearance make the decision for you to stop in. The parking is tough as there are only 10 spots on the right and a similar number to the left of the building. Obviously catering to the DU students and staff that can walk to Spanky's. Also note the entryway is on the right of the building tucked behind the screened in patio. I tried to enter through the other side into the kitchen. Duh. We were seated right away and the server was attentive. My wife ordered a glass of wine and it was almost 10 minutes later we were informed they were out. They promptly delivered her second choice. She liked the wine enough to take a picture of the bottle. She's very particular about her wine and rarely finds something she really likes at places like these. So kudos for the wine selection. Overall the service is pretty solid, perhaps a bit hurried but solid. Atmosphere - the place is really pretty modern inside. The bar looks newer and there are about half booths and half hi-tops. Then there is the patio that has that tent material that can be zipped up during in-climate weather with the space heaters. Great use of space to create double the seating and a nice place for groups. There were two distractions that did weigh on my choice between 3 and 4 stars. They were doing some repair/addition/construction that could be heard throughout the lunch hour. We're talking a pretty steady hammering and an intermittent circular saw. And there were several pesky flies that regardless of our efforts to swat them away, they remained determined to irritate us. And then the silverware we had was dirty - not just water spot dirty. That is just not excusable as someone had to wrap the silverware in the napkin and it should be caught there. It's not that any one of these items was egregious enough to lower the rating, but in tandem it really did detract from the entire experience. So the food - my wife got the hot pastrami sandwich with the coleslaw. She liked the sandwich quite a bit, however the spicy giardiniera really added the heat. Too much for her liking. The coleslaw was creamy without being soupy. I got the burger called The Jam - the burger was done just as I ordered and was juicy without being super fatty. The brie cheese provided a creaminess that paired well with the sweet of the jam and the salty savory of the bacon. The arugula provided a little bitterness and pepper to bring it all together. Wrap all that with a brioche bun and you have a very nice combination. I do wish the bacon were a little more crispy (yes I know how hard that is to do in a commercial kitchen) as I almost choked on the bacon several times. That came with tator tots that were typical Sysco tots - don't hate them, but you aren't going to write home about them. So the food was pretty good. In fact there are several items on the menu that I am going to come back and try with some cocktails. AND I have not been here for breakfast which does seem to be a big favorite of reviewers. Value - it's the going rate and I've paid more for worse. Our bill was inflated a bit with the $10 glass of wine my wife had, otherwise we have been out the door under $30 for a pretty good meal. Food is pretty decent - not that I would drive across town to go here, but if you're in the neighborhood it's worth a stop. read more

We came here mid-morning on a Sunday. There wasn't a wait when we got there, got seated seated right away, but that is when everything fell apart. The service after that was non-existent. Our poor waitress seemed to be the only one working the entire patio and was completely overwhelmed. We ordered "bottomless" mimosas, but only ended up getting one, even after asking several different waitresses several different times for a fill up. The food was lack-luster. We ordered the Amazeballs... don't waste you're time they're really dry and randomly too spicy. We also got fried pickles and they were pretty average. I ordered a chicken Cesar salad and it had a hair in it and it instantly ruined my appetite. ): the salad looked great and my first two bites were yummy. I used to love Spanky's. I took my son there often enough that we were considered regulars. The place had little turnover back then. We were always greeted by someone familiar and seated at "our" booth. It was always a nice little "just the two of us" escape. Not anymore. The prices have gone way up and the food has gone downhill. I hate to say it, but my last several visits to Spanky's have been a real drag. I don't recognize anybody anymore. The staff is disinterested. The food is ordinary. I really can't think of a single reason to go there - not with so many other options in the neighborhood. I can only assume that the current ownership has determined that, since Spanky's is so close to DU - that they will fill the dining room with very little effort because very little effort is all I see. Update: Dear bitchy waitress, first of all, your job is to wait on tables. If waiting on mine is such an imposition, why don't you find another job. I'm just trying to have a nice time with my kid. Secondly, I don't care if the menu clearly states that the grilled cheese has bacon and tomatoes on it. If it clearly said that the lemonade comes with a mouse in it I would complain about that, too. Should I have to read it before ordering a "grilled cheese sandwich". The ingredients are listed in the name of the sandwich. Does your bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich come with shrimp? What the hell? That's it Spanky's. You're out of second chances. You and your pissy wait staff won't have to worry about trying to keep me and my vegetarian kid happy ever again. read more

I've eaten here once before, and the first time, the food was good. The second time however, the kitchen screwed up in a big way - they delivered undercooked chicken wings. They were cooked on the outside but raw inside, and I sincerely hope none of us get salmonella poisoning. Really disappointing. The eggless egg rolls were really good, though. I just can't get over the chicken! The staff were very apologetic and took care of it immediately, and I appreciate that. I'm just worried that it happened in the first place! read more

Totes decent. Well I only had a few bites of a slider and some wings (hot honey & atomic. They are completely edible and low priced but I have had better) but they were pretty good. We came here primarily because they had the Nuggets game on (with sound!). There are a few televisions, enough for anyone to see from about anywhere in the place. The beer was super cheap and they have a daily deal, which I love anywhere. Seems like one of the cheapest, least annoying bars around DU...um except its not really a bar. That is the only thing I wish was bigger, the actual physical bar. If I am just there to drink I don't want to take up a 6 person booth. Service was pretty OK. I came in the other day for the second time and was just as pleased as I was my first time in. The food is unique and delicious, the service attentive and kind, and the restaurant is clean and well kept! The first time in I had the latke Reuben which was fantastic. It is pretty heavy since the latke part is fried (yum!) so I suggest saving half for later. My most recent trip in was for breakfast. The menu was so amazing I think I took half an hour to decide! I ended up being boring and just getting coffee, a side of pancakes, and one biscuit and chorizo gravy but not only was I stuffed but I was also so thrilled with how delicious my food was! I've been to Spanky's many times good food, cold beer and great college atmosphere! I've complimented the chef a few times and they've come out and introduced themselves.. I like that! At times the young kids seem to get out of hand and since I'm an almost empty-nester and this place is so small that I only go if I am in need of one of their fabulous burgers & fries! The wait staff needs to figure out a diplomatic way to get the parents to control their kids or get a sitter! Parking can be a bit of a problem on a game night! read more
