Went by yesterday afternoon after being at the hospital with our mother. We came in and weren't greeted at all for 10 minutes. There was 1 table in there, food was up so we waited patiently while she served the food. Then said Hi, and still was ignored ! Hard times for sure, but lack of common service skills will get you nowhere. My sister and I have a combined 70 years in the business and were surprised that nobody cared. Cool establishment and staff was nice and friendly. I sat at the bar for all you can eat wings, $13 plus the purchase of a drink on Tuesdays. +1 star for good service. Relaxed atmosphere, with most of the other people at the bar being regulars and knowing the bar tender. Bar tender was quick and punctual, always asking if I wanted a refill on drink or another batch of wings. Onto what matters - the food. Wings were sub par at best. They tasted like they had sat in a freezer for a couple weeks, been dumped in a friar, and then plated (which is probably how all wings are prepared, but these lacked any flavor). The cooks clearly had no care in the food they were preparing. Sauces/dry rubs were terrible. Dry rub looked like it came out of a salt shaker and was applied extremely modestly. Sauces appear to have been squirted on without regard for amount. Some orders came out drenched in sauce, most of it on the bottom of the plate and not the wings themselves, or very little sauce. We visited Spanky's today. First of all the waitress took so long to attend to us and take our orders but due to COVID and staff shortages, this is not a big problem. The bog problem was when she brought us dirty plates and even when we told her she did took the plates but did not bring us new ones. I ordered and the Tomato Bisque and we it was served it was cold and the bowl was messy. My husband had a burger with sautéed mushrooms which they were also served cold. I heard that I had to try the grilled cheese ( which changes all the time). It was so good. My friend had the mac and cheese burger and said it was his favorite. My other friends said that the menu just changed 3weeks ago. There is a variety of options for what seems like just about everyone which is nice. I feel kind of torn with this review and probably a little harsh, but as a former Wisconsinite and fry cook who has fried many a fish, I cannot give a higher rating. I'm torn because I like the college hole-in-the-wall atmosphere and the menu says all the right things - Wisconsin fish fry (including walleye and perch!), cheese curds, etc. Plus the food honestly tastes good, but...you can't call this a Wisconsin fish fry. Let me explain. You have two options: pan fried and beer batter fried. Beer battered fried should be done in a fryer, but I'm 99% sure they pan fry both types, just that one is a beer batter and the other is a dry coating. I say this because both times I've been here the beer batter has been soft. Not sitting-under-a-heat-lamp soft, nor soggy, but just...limp. Both times the place was slow, so I know the fish was cooked to order. When I order a beer battered fish fry, I'm looking for crispy deep fried deliciousness. The consistency of this batter was just odd, something I had never experienced in all my fish fry consumptions in the homeland. That said, the batter had good flavor, and the fish taste and quality were great both times - perhaps making it even more maddening. The first time I had the walleye and haddock, and the second I had the traditional cod. Was not a huge fan of the haddock, but the walleye and cod were flaky and fresh tasting. Fries were good, though I would skip the cheese curds at their price range, as you can get pretty much the same ones at Culvers or A&W. So in the end, I'd love this place if it followed tradition. But I'd have my roots questioned if I approved of the soft batter. And yes, that will be the first and last time I use "limp" in a review. Or at least I hope so... read more

Week Two of eating out on a Sunday lunchtime instead of Saturday night brought us here. That and a Buy one, Get One coupon actually. As others have already said, Spanky's is a college bar right next to DU. The decor is sports bar-meets-diner, with plenty of flatscreen tvs and sports memorobilia on the walls. I can't remember what was on the menu because I had already decided I was gonna have a burger. After perusing the 18 or so burgers on offer, I chose a cheeseburger with cheddar, and fries/onion rings ($8.50). He decided on the Buffalo burger with bacon and pepper jack, and cottage cheese ($8.95 for the burger; 75c for each topping). I'll be honest, the food was pretty average. Both patties were nicely cooked but didn't have a whole lot of flavor. The fries were good and crispy, but the two behemoth onion rings were so thick and leathery, they were inedible. The server brought a couple of replacements which were better, but still not that good. So why 4 stars? Because I had a blast! Chowing down on a burger and fries with a few pints of Stella ($7.50 for 25oz), watching West Ham beat Man City, on a beautiful bright Denver day makes for damn fun times in my book! read more

My boyfriend and I live just down the road and were sent a coupon in the mail. We came in for lunch on Tuesday and were very pleased from start to finish, granted it wasn't very busy, but we weren't the only ones there either. First off, check out the specialty burgers! Their beef is hormone free and local! There are also other options for what you can choose as your protein. I had the Mac and cheese burger and my boyfriend a poutine burger (and has been talking about it ever since). They also have great options for sides, and the burgers were cooked to desired perfection. Our waitress was energetic and helpful and tended to our needs accordingly. We also noticed that they have build your own milkshake, which we cannot wait to come back and try. I highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone and the inside is much nicer than the outside, for a pleasant surprise. Normally, I would probably give this spot 4 stars, but I'm boosting it to five because of the turn around since a complete renovation. This place was totally revamped, it used to have a sign that read SPANKY'S in big bold letters and reminded me of a crappy diner. I ate their once before the renovation, it was okay, but as I said the venue scared me off a bit. A couple of months ago, they closed down for a bit and turned everything around. Now, I believe it's still called Spanky's Urban Road house, but the sign concentrates on the "Urban Roadhouse" part which looks much more classy. The bar is a great spot to watch games, lot's of TVs that you can see from every seat in the house. They have a covered patio area that is good so families can visit during a big game and not be subjected to whatever madness may ensue in the bar area. Now the food, I just had breakfast in here the other day and I have to say it was pretty excellent. I will be going back for lunch/dinner at some point soon. Anyone who spends time in the DU neighborhood should check this place out. For some reason everyone seems to only go to Illegal Pete's to have a drink around there, and Urban Roadhouse is a nice change. read more

This place is usually good, unlike this morning where I found it unsatisfactory. Upon entering, I had to seat myself. I ordered coffee which came out warm, and was never offered a refill. I was advised that it was a new pot when I enquired. As for breakfast, I ordered an omelette w a side of hash browns. The omelette was covered in green sauce with barely any cheese. The new Spanky's is warm and inviting and cozy! Nice upgrade to the old booths and awful wooden splintery benches on the patio. Great lighting inside and out- nice redo! The food. It used to be Spanky's had great burgers. Now they are a little fancy! I had a peanut butter and jelly bacon burger. Good flavor combo! The sauteed kale side was delicious, while the corn on the cob side was a little rubbery. Still, fabulous options for sides!! Well it is called Spanky's so you kind of know what you will get going in - this also brought back 80's memories of Porky's! We had just finished moving a bunch of boxes in a rainstorm and wanted to grab a bite nearby. After consulting Yelp we decided to roll the die on Spanky's Roadhouse. We were not dressed in our Sunday best and had survived a not so sudden rainstorm so were a bit bedraggled. It was not a problem to be dressed very casually. We were greeted by a friendly waitress and seated right away. Note: the booths are an odd size - great for playing quarters as the tabletops are super wide but otherwise the are less than comfortable. Go for a table. We would have sat outside except our fear of a lightening strike won out. We started with an order of 1 dozen BBQ wings and they arrived quickly and were a decent size. A few carrot and celery sticks accompanied them along with a tiny cup of runny blue cheese - not nearly enough for 3 folks to split. The wings were OK - fairly standard -we also received 1 wet wipe to share between us. I ordered the grilled cheese that included tomato and bacon - the sourdough was crispy however it was a pretty skimpy sandwich at best -not much cheese and only 2 slices of bacon. A generous side of fries was included. The hubby got the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was standard bar fare as well. A few menu items were intriguing: The Fatty Melt- call it what it is! A burger with sauteed mushrooms and onions sandwiches in between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. Yikes. Also there signature shakes including the Birthday Cake - you guessed it - Funfetti cake mix and vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately the aftermath of eating here for all 3 of us was not pleasant but I've said too much.... All in all I would say to stick to drinking here - it is a college bar and again with a name like Spanky's there should be no surprises. read more

Fish tacos and Sugar & Spice burger. Tasty. I had the fish tacos, which were quite tasty. The mahi mahi was cooked to perfection. The two lime wedges on my plate must have been sliced hours earlier and they were almost entirely dried out, though. I was a bit perplexed by the whole roasted jalapeno on my plate. (See pics) My dad, on the other hand, ordered the Sugar & Spice burger. He usually has no comment on food, except for complaining about the portions being too large. He grumbled not, about his burger and kale salad. He said it was really good, to which I translate from old-grumpy-man-ese to English as - Damn! That was tasty! They do have their own bottled garlic hot sauce that is fairly good. That, coming from a guy that loves both garlic and hot sauce, is worth a try. I'd go back if I was in the area, but parking can be a hassle due to its proximity to DU. read more

We were actually headed to Jelly another favorite in the area... but the wait was too long for us today. I have had several good meals in the past from the dinner menu but today was a first with my 12 year old son. The resturant was nearly empty but like the dinner menu the breakfast menu had so many good things that it took us a while to debate and decide what to order. My son had the pork scramble and devoured it. I had the lemon curd pancakes... which my son assisted me with finishing. Every bit as good as Jelly without the hipster vibe. (Not that I don't enjoy hipsters). The service was good, it did take the kitchen a little longer than expected to put out a breakfast plate... but not horrible. All in all I probably saved a few calories... no donut holes. If you are sitting outside of Jelly with a long wait... looking this way and wondering if you should try it. I say go for it! read more

However, once I saw the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, my decision was essentially made for me. Plus, as an added bonus, I could get cottage cheese as a side. We sat outside in their covered patio. They had a mist system going that seemed to drip more than mist. Select your seating carefully. The whole outdoors seating with mist is a new concept to me, I've seen it at a few places now. I'm not sure if I like it yet, so I can't really hold it against Spanky's for what appeared to be a slightly broken system (we could of just sat inside). The menu has enough variety that encourages me to come back and try again. The portions are large and the pricing is typical for what was offered. read more
