Spargo's is a diner tucked in one of the many business strips on University. Their food is on par with many of the independent diners in the Detroit area - definitely no worse than Leo's. They make a pretty decent chicken gyro, and their desserts are way better. (Remember folks, even if peanut butter is a sin, it's so worth it.) Actually, I'd put their gyro over National's. That being said, this isn't a place that I'd drive across town for. If I want a tried and true gyro, there's always Greektown. Still, if you work or live in the area, it's an alternative to the chain restaurants in the area. Plus they have one feature that seemed kind of odd to me; they have outdoor seating! It's like a real restaurant and a greasy spoon had a kid named Spargo! Honestly it's the only diner I've ever heard of that has outdoor seating. I love this Coney Island. I go to Oakland University and have frequented this place many times both dine in and take out and have never been dissappointed. With a number of offices and a University nearby, Spargo is the place where the locals hang out and everyone knows your name. Now I'm certainly not a local and this was my first time at Spargo's, but I could see why everyone chooses to come back time and time again. Their wait staff is friendly and humorous and they pay close attention to what you order and need. I ordered the tuna melt with a side of fries, both of which were hefty portions that tasted delicious. Just a great place to stop in for a quick bite to eat. I came in for breakfast the other day and I got a bad scent of cigarettes as I am allergic to tobacco and on top of that when I asked for the manager they never came out so I left and I will never come back! The owner was also very rude to the waitresses calling them rude slurs and yelling at them. As it was very busy he just stood there and looked at his phone. It has what you would expect from a coney place, but it is better than most. Thought the atmosphere and décor is way better than other coney places, I think you end up paying for it. I've only ever come here for breakfast. But the food is very good. It's a step up from your basic coney island. Less grease in your food and in the dining room. The service is attentive and friendly. The prices are a bit higher than the average coney but worth it. Everything I've had seems very fresh. The coffee is good too. My husband usually orders the Southwest Skillet. Good portion & nice quality chorizo. I usually get a veggie omelet or skillet. The Garden Delight is good so is the Mediterranean. It's on a corner spot so the atmosphere is sunny and bright. Updated and modern decor with Windows all around in a strip mall close to FCA and Oakland University. Had the lemon rice soup, a Coney Island staple, which was hot and good! Followed with the turkey, ham, Swiss, coleslaw on rye sandwich. Excellent on all accounts and a good portion too! Waitress and hostess was cheerful and helpful and the turnover is real quick! Will definitely come back over and over for it all. All my associates ordered something different and they all looked excellent. Maybe the worst breakfast I've ever had. Hash browns looked perfect but had no taste. No amount of salt, pepper, ketchup, or hot sauce could make them edible. Omelette was basically over cooked egg with a few bits of ham. The only cheese was on top and I think just there to be decorative. Got bread instead of toast. read more

It's hard to critique a koney island, since they're everywhere. However, I think it's safe to say that Spargos had been one of the nicest ones I've eaten at in a long time. The servers that work here are a lot of fun. Not just because the girls are good looking but they know what good customer service is. They bring fun to your table. The fish n' chips I had weren't the best quality by any koney island standards but everything that came with it was very good - pita bread, good coleslaw, and your choice of potato for fire an additional $1. Most koney's don't have a patio, which makes this more enjoyable. If you're looking for a koney island with slightly higher quality and better meal selections, this is the place to go! read more

I'd rate this a 3.5 if I could, because it's just middle of the road for me now. I've been going to spargos for about a year. It had an element of sophistication to it in the beginning from the waitstaff to the food quality. I'm not sure who the new loud, foul mouthed, slightly obnoxious waitress is but someone needs to correct that as its dampening the atmosphere that I once enjoyed about Spargo's. It seems if the owner isn't in the kitchen cooking, the food is just sub par now. I'm not sure why I feel like this place is trickling down hill but if Vicki leaves, I probably won't return often. It is slightly priced high for a coney but it was worth paying for in the beginning I can say that. My wife and I stopped in for breakfast as it looked like a pleasant place to eat. When we walked in, the waitress greeted us and immediately I felt as we were being patronized with an attitude. We sat down and looked at the breakfast portion of the menu and were shocked at the prices of breakfast foods. It's a Coney Island and you would expect reasonable prices but $10-11 for an omelette is a little high. Even simple breakfasts like two eggs two sausages and toast was over $7 and that's without hash brown potatoes. My wife had a country breakfast. It included biscuits and gravy. The gravy was one step above children's paste. It was flavorless and lumpy. The hash browns weren't brown at all. In fact they were under cooked. I had the South of the Border skillet and again the hash browns were undercooked and all of the cheese was plopped in the middle of the potatoes instead of being spread across the plate. Worst breakfast experience we've had. We eat out 5-6 times a week so we know how we should be treated and we're good tippers. In spite of the way our waitress treated us, I still gave a 25% tip. $34 for a two person breakfast for seniors is a little much. No senior discounts and no veterans discounts. Never again. Lousy breakfast, lousy service. I'd like to give it a minus 1 star if I could. The menu pictures on here are out of date but the explore the menu link has accurate pricing. I will give this place just Ok. Very modern looking and Spargo's has a clean and open feel. I like the staff, very friendly and ready to serve. The prices are HIGH, over $6 bucks for 1 coffee and 1 tea and that is the cheap stuff. Spargo's Coney Island - Chicken Stir Fry Growing up, I've always been a fan of chicken and its many forms - tenders, breasts, fries ... the list goes on and on. Over the years I've acquired quite a cultured taste. It is this taste that I believe legitimizes my review. Therefore, without further ado, I present to you, the Yelp faithful, my review of the Chicken Stir Fry at Spargo's Coney Island. Pros Personally I prefer to start with the positive section first. I believe that it sets a nice tone for the review and really gets the reader in the mood. Fortunately for Spargo's, there are many positives to list so I won't even need to lie at all in this section, which is honestly pretty rare. Let's start with the service. Excellent. Couldn't be better. I ordered my meal and had it sitting in front of me within 5 minutes. As a professional in the financial industry, my time is valuable, and Spargo's certainly respects that. Such fast service allowed me to get out of the office and enjoy beautiful weather (90o and sunny!!) without sacrificing too much time out of my busy schedule. You don't get that at most places let me tell you! Now, let's turn our focus to the actual meal. Lots of positives here as well - no surprise! I got a very good amount of food for the price I paid, and it was all high quality. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was complemented beautifully by the nice array of red peppers, zucchini, and numerous other vegetables. To top it off, the chicken and vegetables rested comfortable on a delicious layer of white rice just lightly drizzled by a delicious sauce (sorry Yelpers - don't know the type of sauce they used!). The combination of the chicken, vegetables, and riced came together to sing a song of deliciousness that is hard for me to describe. Very nice balance. Cons After such a positive experience it is always difficult for me to find areas of improvement. However, there are always some and there's nothing wrong with that - nobody's perfect, am I right?! For Spargo's, they could really up the overall dining experience if they added more chicken to the stir fry. While the meal as a whole was delicious, I did find myself searching for bits of chicken as I was nearing the end of my meal. Minor critique, but it is something that stood out in my mind. Conclusion Overall I would definitely return to Spargo's. The friendly wait staff, the beautiful outdoor patio, and the delicious meal all left a great impression on me - and don't even get me started on the incredibly family friendly prices!! The food is super fast, the waitstaff run their butts off, but the owner seems like a bully. One of the bussers had a phone call while I was at the take out counter, and it seemed as though she was talking to her child. The owner RUDELY snapped his fingers and called the cashier in charge over. He then chastised the cashier for allowing the busser to take a phone call. Don't support this business if this guy treats his employees like this. I'm a parent, I assume most of the people who eat here are parents, and I don't think any of us should support this guy if he can't be human and let the parents in his employ speak to their kids for 2 minutes when necessary. read more

Every time I have gone here I wished I'd taken the time to drive a little further and go somewhere else. The food is just average and you always seem to end up paying three or four bucks for two people more than somewhere else just as good. I really don't care what the interior looks like. I'm there to eat not admire architecture. The service is highly variable. If you need something - good luck getting it without going up and making a pest of yourself - because you will never see your waitress again. They want you to eat and go away just a little too much so it becomes unfriendly. That's why they don't have wifi which surprised other people.
