Life-changing experience. I'm not big on reviews on any platform, however, I did want to call out the impact the device I wear has made to my sleep results. I did the sleep study, the push to get a cpap machine etc, etc. Based on the experience in the sleep study, where I hated the feeling of the air forced down my throat I refused to follow through on the prescribed cpap. My issue was that I was at a point in my OSA that I was frequently feeling like I was being choked or drowning when I slept and I would have to stay awake to make it go away; or fall back asleep experiencing nightmares of not breathing. Just a bad place to be. Talking about my situation, my co-worker recommended Spark Sleep Solutions and I gave it a try looking for something other than cpap. The difference is life-changing. In about 2 years I have not experienced the drowning feeling or choking etc that kept me up or made me have nightmares. Instead, I sleep through the night with clear breathing, not 1 instance of a breathing issue. I travel quite a bit and I guard that device like its gold. It always goes with me and not in any luggage. I will be looking into a backup device; probably when I can get insurance to kick in to offset the cost. Since beginning with Dr. Shah, we have made slight modifications at my periodic appointments that have yielded even better breathing. Spark is the BEST way to get an oral appliance from an extremely knowledgeable Dr. Shah (mastering a very niche practice area) + a support staff with Tram that bends over backwards to ensure available insurance coverage is obtained. Oral appliances for apnea is a specialty practice. While any dentist may be able to provide one, Spark is specialized and has a lot of equipment to do this right. They measure your mouth/throat using ultrasound equipment and create custom reports of your physiology and use this to select and tailor the best of MANY available options from different companies. The appliance fit more comfortably than any of the custom mouth guards I have ever had. The model I selected with Dr. Shah is easy to use and doesn't bother me after the second night. General practice dentists may not have the same equipment and familiarity with one that solely specializes in this practice. They may not also have so many options to choose from and which they are familiar with the pros/cons. As for insurance, the staff person Tram went above and beyond to help sort out an issue from my insurance's confusion about in vs. out of network. She responded to many emails quickly and made multiple resubmissions. In the end, insurance approved and I now have my appliance with insurance coverage. read more

Service received from Spark Sleep Solutions was great. Got the device and it worked as advertised. The problem is that the device is very expensive and they ask for payments up front. The whole time they say that insurance will pay for about 33% of the cost and then nothing sent to insurance. Many,many call later, still not insurance claims have been submitted. Normally I'm not one to complain, but I was asked every time I was seen by Dr Shaw to share my experience on Yelp. I wasn't a person that normally spoke up, nor do I frequent these types of sites, but I feel obliged to share my experience plus I was promoted to by their office staff multiple times to share, so here it is. I was referred by my primary physician. So I called to set up my daughter's first appointment. The lady that answered the phone was very nice and professional while scheduling my initial visit. My first visit we sat there waiting for thirty-five minutes, which was confusing considering I was on time and the office was empty. Once I was roomed while waiting for the doctor I over heard the staff talking about another patient in an unprofessional manner. I blew it off and figured it was okay because it seemed they needed to share. We're human right? It seemed possibly something had transpired prior to my arrival, but none the less you should not discuss these sorts in the work place, while patients are ears length away, and during work hours. ..right? A few weeks later I had my second visit this time I didn't wait as long, but I could hear Dr. Shaw going round and round arguing with this poor lady about what she owed and belittling her. I wanted to get up and leave, but there was so much chaos happening I just prayed for this to pass. I was seen, got my daughter's results and have not been back! Let's just say I will never go back there and if you do be prepared for some Jerry Springer action. read more

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnia in Feb 2018. I got my cpap machine in March 2018 and was using it regularly for several months. But I was having occasional/frequent problems sleeping because of the masks, nose pillows, etc. I tried at least 4 types of masks/nose pillows. But I was frequently (1-2 times/night) waking up due to mask / nose pillow coming off, air blowing in my face, re-positioning the mask, hoses around my face and neck, etc. So after complaining several times to my provider, Sleep Health MD, they recommended I go see Spark Sleep Solutions. Spark Sleep offers different types of oral appliances that keep your lower jaw from falling back into your throat, allowing all night air flow, without masks, nose pillows, hoses, etc. Results: I am now CPAP FREE!! I did a home study with the oral appliance in Feb. 2019, and my test results came up with very good API numbers, about 8-10. As opposed to 50-60 - which were my numbers following last year's initial sleep study. So now, with the oral appliance, I am set for life. I can breathe at night, not snore, have no hoses or mask problems, and the appliance is state-of-the-art, I even forget I have it in sometimes. The only problem is really not even 60% the fault of Spark Sleep: Price. Over $2,000. I paid 100% out of pocket (oop). I paid for everything. Oral appliances are usually not covered by any insurance, at least not mine, which is United Health Care, EPO. So if I could have had this alternate treatment as an equally available treatment for sleep apnia, AND if I was informed by Sleep Health MD at the very start of treatment for this optional treatment, AND got at least 50% paid for by my partially subsidized insurance (I also actually pay over $1400/mo in premiums oop for me and my family of 4), then I would have given 5 stars. Suggestions: Maybe Spark Sleep should campaign, appeal to multiple top-tier insurance companies, file a lawsuit, start a petition, whatever it takes, and get this archaic insurance "policy" changed, AND if Spark Sleep had worked with with Sleep Health MD - from the very start of my treatment, (lack of inter-company communication perhaps?) and if had I been informed of this optional treatment by Sleep Health MD a year ago, then I would have given Spark Sleep 5 stars. Yes Sleep Health MD will get their review as well. But yes overall, I love the oral appliance, and I have had 0 problems with it, or the Drs. or their staff, all of whom are caring, careful, professional, knowledgeable, and very thorough during the testing and fitting and followup process. And they're even understanding about my oop costs (I was given a few months to pay for the device). Now I am living a much healthier life because of it. read more

I had gone through the whole CPAP scenario and had a lot of problems actually sleeping with the mask on my face, although mine was a pretty minimal sort of mask. The perfect solution for me has been through Dr. Shah and a 3D printed mouthpiece. Yes, it's more expensive, but so much easier to deal with. The staff at Spark Sleep are all very patient and helpful, and Dr. Shah has been wonderful to work with. BILLING REVIEW: A very frustrating billing situation. At our first appointment I was asked for our dental and medical insurance information which we provided. We were told both insurances would be billed for the different services for my son. He has migraines and we were referred by our neurologist. Spark sleep took impressions for a bite plate. He had to wear for a designated time full time then just at night. They thought was that he was clinching his jaw. They have never billed the medical part of our insurance as promised. I'm not sure if our dental was fully billed either I began receiving a bill for over $1000. I called and spoke to Yolanda who stated she would check into the billing. I called the next month and spoke to Yolanda who was always pleasant, she said Letty was handling my inquiries. I've called 4x to speak with Letty. She is never there nor does she call me back Our original appointment and our $500. Initial payment was in January 2017. The initial payment which I understood was for the consultation. This also was never billed to either insurance. The doctors are very nice and I believe he received good care but I cannot feel confident in returning as I may also clench my jaw! read more

I suffered from a significant lack of sleep for at least a decade and did not realize it. My husband said that I woke up often at night, but I did not remember doing so. My General Practitioner suggested a sleep study test (thank you, Dr. Deepa Ramachandran, 5 Stars). I needed to take a sleep study test to get baseline sleep study data. I did this at one of Dr. Robert and Dr. Grace Ang's Sleep Medical Center offices. Dr. Robert and Dr. Grace Ang operate a friendly office and are positive-thinking doctors. They want to help their patients lead a better quality of life through a healthy night's sleep. I fell asleep poorly and needed 2 mg of Lunesta to assist with the study. I did the sleep study test with the knowledge that a CPAP mask would be applied should I stop breathing. The results shocked me. No wonder I had trouble with recall, general memory issues, and felt tired after waking up. I experienced 66 hypopnea events (overly shallow breathing) and 18 apnea events (stopped breathing). In one hour, I woke up thirty-seven times per hour but could not remember do so. My oxygen levels were at 72%. I was mortified. I followed up with a heart treadmill test and was relieved to see my cardio health was not compromised. I visited a respiratory therapist and tried every CPAP mask the office stocked. After that, I purchased my array of masks, all in the attempt to find the mask that would fit my face and not leave marks. It was impossible. I tried nose only masks and even went so far as to tape my mouth shut and wear a chin strap. I experienced CPAP mask failure. I was miserable and depressed. I did some research and discovered oral appliances for sleep apnea/hypopnea and Dr. Shah of Spark Sleep Solutions. I went to one of the three offices of Spark Sleep Solutions and spoke with Dr. Shah. I went to Dr. Shah in hopes that the Somnodent oral appliance would give me a good night's sleep. Dr. Shah and his staff are friendly and reassuring. Measurements were taken to ascertain if I was a viable candidate for the oral appliance. I was. Molds were taken, and a couple of weeks later I received the appliance and began adjusting it. When I felt I was sleeping well, I went back for the follow-up sleep study. I could tell I slept better, as I felt more rested, and I did not awaken my spouse. I had six hypopnea events and 0 apnea events. In one hour, I woke up nine times per hour. My oxygen levels were at 92%. I was overjoyed with the results. I still have room to adjust my oral appliance, if needed. If you cannot sleep, go to Spark Sleep Solutions if a CPAP mask does not work for you. You do not need to suffer. Your spouse does not need to suffer. I recommend Dr. Robert and Grace Ang for sleep study testing and to try out the CPAP mask/machine route - 5 Stars. If you cannot adjust to CPAP, I recommend Dr. Shah at Spark Sleep Solutions and the Somnodent device- - 5 Stars. The oral appliance is small, portable and easy to use and works. read more

First of all, let me say, that I love Dr. Shah and his staff. All very kind and caring. Dr. Shah has to wear one of these sleep apnea dental appliances himself, so he answered all my questions from a wearer's point of view as well as the medical details. That was very helpful to me. I've worn my appliance for a little over two weeks now, and just went in yesterday for my first follow up. I'm still wearing my cpap with it during the adjustment phase, until my next sleep study. My experience so far: 1. I have not had any problems wearing the device. No soreness, or pain. However, I do drool more in my sleep. No big deal. 2. I have TMJ... Dr said the device is good to help that. He was so right!! My jaw feels so much better when I wake up. 3. I've always had ear trouble. Ear infections were a norm when I was a child. I'm 57. They didn't do tubes in the ears when I was a kid... As an adult, my ear canals feel clogged and pressured most of the time. Here's what I didn't expect,,, my ears are better while using the appliance!!! Even my sinuses feel clearer than normal when I wake up. And no headache!! I've tested my theory a couple of times. Like, last night. I slept with cpap only. No appliance. This morning, I woke up with cloggy ears and sinuses. And a headache. What I'm saying is that, when I wear it, I'm feeling like this devise actually lines up my anatomy better and it makes me feel better in general when I wake up than just cpap alone. 4. I wanted this device for when I travel, especially when going somewhere with different plugs. 5. We are a scuba diving family. We are going diving in Hawaii next week. 14 dives in 5 days. I was referred to Dr. Shah by my Cardiologist for an oral appliance for my moderate sleep apnea last March, 2013. I finally decided to do something a few months ago. My Pre appliance AHI was 18.6 events/hr and oxygen dropped to 87%. Post sleep study with oral appliance shows AHI at 2.1 events/hr and lowest oxygen at 95%- BIG improvement. Dr. Shah was very thorough and receptive to my questions throughout treatment. A few visits he spent extra time with me. My biggest concern about potential side effects were put to rest with his explanations and the preventative steps taken. Immediately, without any adjustments on the appliance, my biggest concerns of waking up in the night, low energy and snoring were resolved. I continue to feel very good with the oral appliance. Quite honestly, my life has changed! Office was very clean and nicely setup. Staff was accommodating in rescheduling a few times due to my work. They took care of the insurance coverage so I didn't have to worry about it and coordinated with my MD getting my sleep study and paperwork. Since my insurance is pretty much the worst ever, his biller has been working diligently with me to make sure my insurance would cover the treatment and minimize my out of pocket expense. Some of the other doctors I went to just told me I'd have to pay cash. All of his staff seemed very well trained, and totally on top of it. I filled out my initial forms on an iPad, went through some quick questions with his nurses, and then got thorough time with the doctor to make sure this was the right treatment for me. My experience with Spark Dental was very not very good at all. Unfortunately, my sleep apnea doc thought one of those oral appliances would help my Central sleep apnea, which is a neurological version of SA, as opposed to OSA, which is a physical cause. So, I don't know why he thought such a device would woke....as he found out, he was wrong and I wasted several trips to the San Ramon office, dealing with incompetent staff, who really didn't seem to understand how or what to charge me. I dealt with the other dentist mostly, Dr. Goldman? He was nice and professional, as Dr. Shah seemed, as well, but then when his office is most likely overcharging and going along with the idea that an OA can treat CSA, I'm sure he can afford to be nice. I felt he was phony. To top it off, the over priced cleaning powder he sold me to soak the OA in has some explosive ingredients, as I found out the other day, when using it to clean my retainers. I obviously put in too much powder, then added the water, placed the retainers in the soaking container and shook it up to do a quick cleaning. The dish exploded in my hand and the bottom retainer went flying across the bathroom, when the solution splashed all over my bathroom mirrors and on my watch, wedding ring and even into my wallet, which happened to be on the counter at the time. I thought I had properly dried my charge cards etc. but when I tried buying groceries tonight, the cards kept getting declined. I finally swiped one on my pant leg, removing a tiny bit of moisture and then it worked. I know it sounds like a funny story, but there needs to be a warning on the damn bottle of solution. Most likely, the overpriced powder has a good amount of baking soda in it, which caused the explosion. I'm also sure Shah up is over 2000 percent on the junk! Also, his office kept emailing for me to write up a review, as they thought they were so great. I finally had to call them and tell them to stop, as they harassing me... I really DON'T RECOMMEND SPARK DENTAL to anyone, who has more than a mild case of OSA. These dental devices cannot do what a highly skilled technical CPAP/BIPAP can do so much better and without the risk of getting TMJ. Do yourself a favor and research he treatment options online for the severity of your condition, before following any advice to get one of these oral appliances! read more

I ordered the custom dental appliance for my sleep apnea. However, after using it for a few nights, I noticed a clicking/popping sound in my left jaw. The risk of developing TMJ problems was not adequately discussed with me before I bought this product. I have now stopped using it because of this, and I have decided to reconsider the CPAP breathing machine. (The dental device, being custom made, is non-refundable.) read more

I guess I'm greatfull that there is an alternative to the CPAP machine. Although, the person dispensing the product (oral appliance mouthpiece) is less than professional. I have finished treatment a long time ago. Dr. Shah wants me to come back every 6 months. Well, nope! The Receptionist/Office Manager is friendly as can be. But it's just something about the Doctor that rubs me wrong. He won't tell you exactly how much the appliance is. they got me coverage via my insurance, but when you 1st talk to them, they won't give you a dollar amount, so that you know how much your insurance will pay and how much I have to pay. stupid policy! Also, I heard from a former patient of this practice, that he's talks down to certain patients. I'm suspecting he is prejudice? He's INDIAN for heavens sake! So I met some doctor for a mild case of sleep apnea in Nov 2012. He convinced me spend money to get a dental appliance from them. I paid the amount, he said he will let me know in 2 weeks. But it is 3.5 months and I have not heard from them. In the meantime I got a bill from my insurance that spark sleep solutions has submitted a bill of 6000$ to them. I called the clinic couple of times and all they said is that they will check it and call me back. Looks like all they do is convince everyone to get dental appliance which costs in thousands and then dont care much. Pathetic service. read more

I had previously gone to another physician who immediately recommended surgery, telling me that an oral appliance would cost me almost $5000 and would not be covered by my insurance. Dr. Shah and his helpful staff get 5 stars all around. I had a little trouble locating his office and was thus running a few minutes behind, which is something I hate doing. Directions are not my strong-point! But when I called the office, his receptionist was very understanding and friendly. The check-in process was simple and streamlined and his staff made me feel welcome and comfortable. I was equally impressed with Dr. Shah. Not only was he professional and incredibly knowledgeable, his bedside manner was also excellent. He is one of the rare doctors who seems to genuinely care about his patients and thus he takes the time to get a thorough history from them, instead of rushing through his appointments as quickly as possible. I can also honestly say that I had fun joking around with him during my appointment, which I think says a lot, seeing as going to a medical appointment isn't exactly an activity I would usually describe as "fun." He is relatable and very easy to talk to and I trust his recommendations in terms of which type of oral appliance would be the most appropriate for my sleep apnea, not only because he has extensive training in his area of expertise, but also because he himself has sleep apnea and has thus been through the nightmare that finding adequate and effective treatment can entail. Lastly, he places a high value on the quality of care he provides and has a clear attention to detail. As someone who is a bit of a perfectionist myself, I can certainly appreciate that quality in a medical doctor. Let me just say that Dr. Shah and his staff are really amazing. For years I suffered from mild sleep apnea. Even being mild, I still fell asleep watching TV, in movies, and in a long car ride. As the years passed and this condition went untreated, I not only felt myself becoming progressively more tired, but I got a diagnosis of hypothyroidism from my primary care. I did not want to take medication to treat this, but how I felt was a true measure of a slowing metabolism. I randomly noticed an ad in a local news magazine about Dr. Shah and Sparks Sleep Solution. I was very skeptical because I had previously tried to improve my sleep apnea with another local doctor who had me undergo a very expensive and invasive nasal surgery that did absolutely nothing. Yet, I felt as though I had to at least try. I went to a free consultation and was very impressed with Dr. Shah's manner and attentiveness. I got my oral appliance and began wearing it. Almost a year had passed since my primary care physician diagnosed me on two separate blood tests with hypothyroidism (slow metabolism). Yet, I had never began any course of treatment. She wanted me to begin taking medication for this. Finally, a year later I went for an annual physical. I was depressed because I was sure she was going to finally write me a prescription for a medication to treat this condition. I went for another blood panel a week before my appointment. When I got there, she said she couldn't explain how my results had changed so much. She said that according to my most recent blood panel, I no longer had hypothyroidism. I told her I changed some of my eating habits to become a vegetarian, and that I had seen Dr. Shah and had been wearing an oral appliance to treat my sleep apnea. She strongly felt that treating my sleep apnea must have contributed to this turn around. I used to fall asleep within 30 minutes of watching any tv show or movie. Now I easily sit through any show, and have so much energy that I am up past midnight no problem. With my oral appliance in, I still get up early and am ready for the next day. I was trying to find a solution to chronic snoring. After a visit with my primary care physician, an eye, ear, nose & throat specialist, and a sleep apnea specialist, I was directed to Dr. Shah. He and his staff did an excellent job of advising me of my choices and ultimately directing me towards a mouthpiece solution. As a result of the work with Dr. Shah I am no longer keeping my wife awake and have improved my moderate sleep apnea to mild sleep apnea. The office that I visited has a great staff. I work in the quality department of a large hospital, and so I'm really picky about who my family and friends choose for their doctors. After some extensive research I came across Dr. Shah and accompanied my cousin to several of her appointments. He was incredibly honest about the process and treatment, and based on his assessment, recommended that she see an ear nose throat physician instead, as she may not have been a good candidate for the oral appliance. Others had highly recommended his treatment, so my cousin went with his services anyways. There weren't any billing issues as mentioned by other reviewers. It's important to note that doctors only collect a very small fraction of what they bill to the insurance. The amount they bill pretty much has no purpose, and is usually a rate decided by the insurance company and not the doctor. It was a smooth process and have no complaints! Juanita, the receptionist, made me feel comfortable and immediately put me at ease with her warm smile and supportive manor. She is a dynamic representative of the quality staff of Dr. Shah's clinic. Cassandra took time to demonstrate and explain the operation of the Somnodent appliance. She thoroughly explained the process, the use and maintenance of the oral appliance. She gave very clear directions and checked me for understanding. Dr. Shah fit me in to his busy schedule and made excellent casts. He is very knowledgeable, thorough, fast and efficient. He is experienced, very personable and I am proud to be a reference for them to anyone seeking their services. Dr. Shaw got a degree in Electrical engineering at U.C. Berkley. Later he switched to Dentistry and had a private practice. When the paperwork began to hinder him from personal contact with patients, he started helping family members who had sleep apnea and gradually shifted the emphsis of his practice.
