My 1991 Toyota Deluxe Extended Cab 6 Cylinder 5 Speed 4 Wheel Drive required a number of repairs / replacements. After spending some SERIOUS money to achieve these upgrades with another repair shop specializing in Toyotas ( which did a fantastic job! ), I drove straight to DEQ to register for my new 2027 registration and tags. Naturally, I had my 'safety first' headlights on all the way and continued to leave them on while waiting in the line at the street entrance. I subsequently advanced to a testing line and after realizing that I was now needlessly burning gas while waiting to advance to my assigned testing bay, I turned off the ignition. When the technician waved me to advance I turned the key and...absolute silence! AAA came to my rescue and jump charged the battery. Within seconds I was able to enter the testing bay and pass. I then drove home and had no more starting issues for weeks...until @ a week and a half ago. I went to a local hazardous waste disposal event and again encountered a waiting line before I was able to dispose of my contribution - headlights "on" again all the while. Afterwards, I drove straight to a local department store ( remember, headlights still "on" ), did some 'brief' shopping ( about 15 minutes ), and upon turning the ignition key to head for home...SILENCE! AAA again to the rescue and immediate engine start. My battery was only 2 years old and did not exhibit any typical failure indicators. My coil, starter, and ignition key receptacle all behaved appropriately. Even the alternator which was the original 1991 factory installed item provided the required number of AMPS by the OEM. Unfortunately, this proved to be the problem. About 6 months previously I had replaced the original "low candlepower headlights" with a set of "nice and bright halogens." Skip, the proprietor of "Sparky's Auto Electric" monitored the AMP output of my alternator and though it met the original factory specifications, with the new halogen headlights "on" (including the engine running) the factory alternator could not fully charge the battery enough for any subsequent restart attempt. He ordered and replaced my factory installed alternator with one that had considerable more AMP recharging capacity and after numerous repetitions of my previous starting circumstances, I am thoroughly convinced the problem has been resolved. We were at Tyler's Automotive and they started running a diagnostic on our car that would crank but not start. They stopped halfway through and said they wouldn't continue the diagnostic until I paid them $530 to adjust the timing belt so they could finish the diagnostic. Somehow with a magic x-ray machine for cars they were able to see that the timing belt was off a tooth and had the gall to tell me with straight faces they knew that to be fact without spending two hours taking my car apart first. I told them to put my car back and I had it towed home and later towed to Skip's place. We looked at the spark plug wires and not only had the mechanic switched one out with a mismatched wire but he'd left two of them completely off, another two of them loose and all the intake wires were completely switched around. Skip took less than a minute to put them all back in their places; the car started right up afterward. We're lucky we heard about Skip through our preferred towing company, Auto Haus. Skip usually charges $45 for a full diagnostic and insisted that we didn't owe him anything for helping us out. Great work. He really knows his stuff, and is very reliable. Works from home but has a full shop for cars, boats, etc. I recommend giving him a call anytime after 10am and he'll work on your car any day of the week if he has time, which he usually does, because he does the work in a pretty timely matter. Today my mom and I went to see Skip. I have to say he is an amazing Mecahnic and had my moms car done within a few hours we were pleasantly surprised and at such a fair price my mom even gave him a 10$ tip because he did it in such a good amount of time and even on a Saturday which was great my mom was so happy. I am going to be buying another car in the next few days and if I ever have any problems I'm going to see Skip. This guy is amazing. read more
