So that we would just be around the corner and popping in here would be easy during our stay. Luckily I was able to come in on two different days, and at different times! We got both the night life experience and the day time experience. I think I preferred the day time because it wasn't as busy. Night means cover charge ($4) and bag check. And no kids. You might see some kids during the day. What a cool place, with yummy drinks (no food), and all my favorite arcade games, and then some! They operate on a card system, so no coins needed when you visit. My pinball wizard friend had been traveling arcade ready with coins in her bag, but it turns out they weren't needed. Ground Kontrol supplies free lockers to store your stuff; just follow the instructions and don't forget your code. I learned a lot about pinball during my visits here, and played more pinball than I usually do because of that. I mean, why not? I played one of the newest pinball games, released within weeks of my visit, which was Pokemon themed, and I played one of the more vintage pinball machines, Xenon. And everything in between! It was awesome. $20 loaded onto a card will get you 15ish games, but there is a different cost depending on which game you're playing. I was satisfied with the value and would, and did! come back again. Highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area! Make sure to check out the whole place, as it's bigger than you think and there are more games (mostly pinball) upstairs.

There's a parking lot right across the street for easy parking. I didn't try any food or drinks from the bar this time around but the staff at the entrance were nice and friendly. Overall, this place was a bit underwhelming but if you're into drinking and pinball machines, this is the place! I just wish they had a little more variety with their games.

Another summer ending run!…read more (per the website) THIS RACE IS PUT ON BY COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY Packet Pick-up Day was held on a Saturday with a few vendors presenting a few running items and, of course, the major sponsor by Nike. The running schwag was actually really nice. The draw string goodie bag was actually made of good quality. It was filled with a Nike water bottle, running pouch for your phone/keys, the MLK Dream Run t-shirt, a bag of bagels from Dave's Killer Bread, and a few other items by other sponsors. Race Day Sunday: Starting at the Portland Community College Campus, the run basically is a few blocks that heads towards Peninsula Park (north). Then runs in a square, or rectangle if you're running the 10K/15K, towards Martin Luther King Blvd (south), and back to the PCC campus. The participants here seemed a bit smaller, I'd say less than a thousand, than the Beaverton Run the weekend before. Likely because this does not include a Half. 8am started with the 15K runners, followed by the 10K runners, and around 8:25am the 5K runners/walkers were on their way. The run was flat. So, there were no challenging elevation issues. A few negatives, but I'm not reducing a star: ~ No parking information, so street park. ~ I didn't see enough water stations, but that's probably because they didn't have enough volunteers. Luckily, I had hydration gels. ~ No medal at the end. At least no medal for everyone that joined for health reasons. Medals only awarded to the top timed runners of certain categories; Gender, age group, etc. Regards, I still had a good run and would do it again. Plus my Adidas' rival, did provid a lot of items which made it well worth it.

It was a one-of-a-kind experience, and the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby is the closest thing to it I've found, bringing a similar excitement with its creative soapbox racer creations, and lively carefree atmosphere. With this event held at Mount Tabor Park, expect a LOT of walking up steps, especially if you wanna get to the starting point where you can view the soapbox cars up close before they race. Some of the soapbox cars for the 2024 event included a baked potato, a shiny snail, and speed readers ("read fast drive slow"). My faves were the boombox, the plant creature from Little Shop of Horrors, and a soapbox car made of instruments which had a band playing music on the drums, guitar, and more as they raced down the course. The participants zoomed through the track in waves of three, and most repeatedly went down multiple times throughout the day, which was cool cuz we got to see some that we missed in the beginning. They had vendor tents as well, offering snacks and drinks, a good variety including mexican and italian food. We got the smoked kielbasa from Two Guys and a Grill, an acai bowl from Carioca Bowls, and concha and coffee from La Casa de Mama. And we easily found a spot along the track to enjoy our lunch and a great view of the entertainment. Definitely not as crowded as the SF event I attended before, but there were plenty of spectators on lawn chairs and blankets just having a good time. Street parking was limited, but we found a space in the morning about a 10-minute walk from the Mount Tabor stairs.

Some of the race entries are in it for speed, though most appear to show up as entertainment. Don't expect to be able to park your car anywhere in Mt Tabor Park, and be prepared for the crowd sizes to make it difficult to get anywhere near the racecourse with a bicycle in tow. Regardless of how you get there, you're bound to enjoy the show.
