What really sets this shelter apart is that they take the time to get to know potential adopters and make sure each adoption is a good fit for both the animal and the family. Their focus is on responsible placement and the well-being of the pets, not superficial factors. I especially appreciate that they don't judge a person's ability to provide a loving home based on their social media presence. Too often, some organizations seem to equate online popularity with being a good pet owner, but those things have little to do with one another. In fact, the amount of time someone spends building a social media following says nothing about the care, attention, and commitment they'll give a pet. This shelter evaluates people based on what truly matters: their ability and willingness to provide a safe, stable, and loving home. I adopted two kittens from them about a year and a half ago. One grew into a gentle giant, while the other stayed petite. A few weeks ago, I returned and adopted a large 3-year-old cat as a companion for my gentle giant. The adoption process was just as positive the second time around. I highly recommend this shelter to anyone considering adopting, donating, or volunteering. In June a friend of mine found a mama and 5 kittens outside her home. She contacted me for the best rescue to take them to. I highly recommended AOS. My friend stated that she wanted to keep the mama but was advised by AOS that the kittens could not be accepted without mama and that their best chance for survival was to keep them together. She did the right thing and gave them to AOS but made it very aware to them that once babies were medically ready she was going to adopt mama. Well just this past week babies were ready and my friend was ready to bring home her furever fur baby. That did not happen, favoritism was given to a volunteers niece. My friend submitted the correct paperwork for the adoption, showed up at Petsmart with her new cat carrier only to find out that someone else was taking her home. Now mind you, I was told the night before by the volunteer that she explained the situation to the niece and the niece understood that the cat belonged to my friend....that same niece was at Petsmart and due to being friends with the adoption counselor she ended up with the cat. My friend stood there with tears in her eyes and and empty cage. If you feel you want to adopt from such an organization be my guest, but apparently their word means nothing. They responded to all my emails immediately, answered all my questions thoroughly, checked out all my references, and were just excited to meet me as I was to meet my new cat when it was finally time to adopt! All the cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on shots/ heartworm prevention, and tested for FeLV. Plus, you get all of your new cat's paperwork, and if you adopt the cat during one of the days when PetsMart is hosting them, you also end up getting a $25 credit that you can put towards anything in the store. Such a good deal! An added bonus was that 2 months ago I emailled Petropolis to find out if any of Mugi's old foster parents had any baby pictures of him, and I was sent about 25 pictures of him as a teensy little kitten within hours!

Unfortunately, because of a health condition he has he wouldn't be able to go to a home where he would be left alone for a typical work day. At first I was sad, but the owner Kelly was upfront and made it clear to me this was for both mine and the dog's sake. The next step: They asked me what I was looking for in a dog, if I had any breeds in mind. Next thing I know I'm in a small room with 5 dogs saying hello. They both explained to me each dog's personality and let me socialize with the dogs midst the chaos. I would have never expected to end up adopting a Chihuahua - but he stole my heart right away. I'm in the middle of a move so could not adopt him until a couple weeks later (but still provided my payment) and they were more than happy to keep him the extra couple weeks until I could pick him up. It's been a very long two weeks, and I'm thrilled to see him this week! Overall it's a great organization with fantastic staff and volunteers. We live in the city of Chicago, but I know that if I ever adopt another dog in the future, I'll be going to Tails of Hope.

They do make exceptions and take in pets that would otherwise be put down at another location as well. To me that was an amazing mission statement. And they are a no kill shelter. Who could ask for a better shelter?! These ladies truly love the animals and provide them with the best care possible as they try and find the perfect families for these animals that have fallen on hard times. My coworkers and I took a group of students here to learn about the animals and the work that goes into running a shelter. Tails of Hope was super accommodating and helped us organize an engaging field trip!

Karen was a recommendation to me since we've been interested in bringing a French Bulldog puppy into our home. Karen is not a breeder, but is a middle-person who brings puppies into Illinois from surrounding states. I guess you could consider her a "Puppy Broker". The origin of her puppies from what she told me is they come from out of state breeders and are AKC. She has also been working with these breeders for several years. We scheduled an appointment to meet Karen and the puppy. Karen was friendly and her home was a very tidy environment. The puppy area was spacious, had toys and a puppy bed. Karen answered all our questions. She also takes pride in her clientele, some of whom are public figures that she proudly displays their photos and thank yous. The puppy was adorable! She let us play with him for a while as we asked her questions. Karen gets three stars based on our positive experience with her and our newness to bringing a puppy into our home in this capacity. Neither one of us has ever worked with a Breeder or Middle-person like Karen. The reason we chose not to get a puppy from Karen is we decided to go with an actual Breeder where we could know and understand the lineage better. With Karen not being the breeder, this was something she was unable to provide. If a true breeder is not a deal breaker for you, I encourage you to contact her and see if she is a match for you and your puppy needs.
