I've been using Speake's for many years. I don't have a handyman so gotta use service people even for small jobs. Occasionally I get frustrated with the price of plumbers and call around and get quotes...and end up back with Speake's. His guys are always knowledgeable, professional and seems like to me, fair. They have rebuilt toilets, fixed shower and sink drains, you name it. Today I had Kasey out and, like most of Speake's other service guys, honestly told me my options but added he didn't think I needed to replace a part at this time. They are good about fixing things I wasn't planning on fixing with the call to fill the hour, since you pay by the hour. One time a few years ago one of their guys fixed an outdoor faucet for me and didn't do a super great job. I called and they sent someone out the next day who fixed it correctly. I feel like, for the plumbing business, it's probably as fair of a value as you're going to find. They're timely and easy to schedule with. read more

We started smelling sewer gas in one of our bathrooms and figured we needed to have our toilet reseated. We decided to look for recommendations in my neighborhood mom's group and follow up those by referencing Yelp reco's. Decided to call Speake's Plumbing and so glad we did! We called on a Thursday afternoon and left a message and received an immediate call back. They said someone could come out the following day. Speake's was excellent about communicating and we opted in to receive text messages. They let us know that someone would come by between 10-2 on Friday. And they did! Enter Mike on Friday afternoon around 1:30! We showed him our bathroom and he could smell the sewer gas too! We had kept the door closed to keep fumes down to the rest of the house. Also opened a window. After he removed the toilet and scraped off the wax he found the real problem. He came to show us what he discovered. There was a gap between where the flange and the drain pipe meet. Mike fixed the pipe and replaced the flange with a new beautiful brass one. This is the only pic I took. We love our Toto toilets and asked Mike to replace the insides with a new flush valve kit since the current one looked really old. He replaced the toilet and cleaned everything up. We paid and he sent our receipt via email. The price seemed in-line and we were very happy with Mike and the service he provided. We will definitely call Speake's Plumbing again if a plumbing issue arises. read more

10/4/24: My ten year old water heater gave out and I called Speake's Plumbing and spoke with Travis. I explained what happened and he explained the costs to remove and replace the water heater. I was fortunate enough that Travis was able to arrange for a crew to come out within the hour. Thomas and Trevor were awesome. After a minor mishap, in which the City Of Garland had to come out (inside of an hour) and replace the main shut off valve, the water heater replacement went great. Although the water heater was located in the attic, Thomas and Trevor were very professional and friendly throughout the process. Thomas even installed a hot and cold water shut off to the water heater. I have recommended Speake's Plumbing to anyone needing quality plumbing work done, as they were recommended to me years ago. 06/30/2023 this is the 3rd or 4th time we have done business with Speake's Plumbing. Didn't have problems before. They did their jobs and we paid right away, never bargained, or complained about the charges. So not sure why I'm called "cheap ass" by their employee Garlan, and why my being "oriental" has anything to do with it. I have talked to Rusty Speake, supposedly the owner's nephew, maybe 3 or 4 times on the phone since 2020 to schedule appointments. Never had any issues. So not sure why he "can't stand her", by "her" he meant me. I will never do business with them again simply because they are very unprofessional, talking horribly about their paying customers, and frankly Garlan's comment sounds racial to me. The picture of their texts was obtained with full consent from Garlan while he was holding his phone. Speake's couldn't fix our plumbing issue, so they referred another business, Family Ties. We have been a client of this company for over ten years. During a service call I mentioned we were having trouble getting hot water to the kitchen sink; it took a long time to turn hot. The plumber recommended that we order a circulation pump which Speake's would install along with leak sensors. After nearly $1,000 we have warm water; either hot or cold. When my wife called to ask for assistance we were told the work was not under warranty as we bought the circulation pump from another source - as Speake's requested. Travis also went on a long yarn about how equipment made in China was not really dependable. What a pile! Great lawn fertilizer - but not good service. We plan to upgrade our water heaters to tankless soon and will be using another plumber. Speake's lost another long - standing customer because there service has gone downhill! read more

I've been a long time customer. Generally their customer service is good. In this particular issue, they did work and charged me for work on a shower that needed a new handle as well as some other items (~$760). We were out of town when the work was completed and came back to the shower head being broken and not working correctly. We called them back out to fix the issue. 4 days later without a working shower, they came back and made the repair - and then gave us a $160+ bill for the issue that was caused by their previous work. Communication was terrible during the process and we're furious to be charged to come fix another issue without an explanation of what happened and why the shower stopped working after the first time. read more

Have been long time customer. Just had tub faucet repaired. They drastically overcharged for parts. They separately charged $19 and $16 for identical parts that come as a unit at Home Depot for $9.98 for both (plastic knob and control lever). They also charged $40 for a $16 escutcheon (the plate that goes under the faucet knob). When I confronted them on the phone regarding overcharging he became very angry at my accusations and made some lame excuses. I know that up price parts but this is ridiculous. read more

Since moving to Garland I have used Speak's. They are always professional and thorough. They discuss needed repairs and verify before making changes/repairs. I had them out today to fix a leak in the front shrub line. Not only did they find it and fix it they ran new pipe and made sure to put the new levers in an order to leave outside water available if the inside water needed to be shut off. They cleaned up all of the mud and made the once lost valve cover accessible again. They also made a small repair to a dripping shower faucet, which was not part of the original call. He was helpful in answering my questions and setting up the service call. He told me it would be between 10-2 today. About 9 AM, he called and said the plumber was on the way. Quincy arrived about 9:20. He arrived and we talked about the dead disposal. He said I had a couple of options and left it to me to decide. No pressure whatsoever. I decided to have a new one installed and he started to work right away. Within the hour, he was finished. He double checked to be sure it ran correctly. There was no mess or debris left. This extortionist extraordinaire lost a repeat customer. Set timer when our plumber Garland arrived for the repair. 56 minutes 22 seconds start to finish. Charged me 1.5 hours and complained because my toilet is on the second floor. Do yourself a favor chose any other plumber. This could have been a very complex and expensive repair that would have involved immense damage to my siding. But plumbing genius Garlan made a replacement with a special kit he had in his truck. The whole issue was resolved in less than 20 minutes after his arrival and it only cost $189. God answered my prayers with Speake's plumbing. In addition to the comfort and trust Speake's provided, Garlan was personable, professional and knew his trade. $189 is a bargain what could have been catastrophic flooding and damage. I was referred to Speake's plumbing from a sheetrock guy. They showed up on time, replaced 5 bathroom faucets with new valves/water lines and a toilet within 4 hours. They were professional, courteous, and, reasonable, fast. I highly recommend them. read more

I thought it was pretty serious when my HVAC guy told me there was water in my gas lines. My largest and still unanswered questions is "how much water needs to be in the line to get all the way up into the attic". In any case this situation left us without gas, a furnace, or a hot water heater. I called in for a plumber on monday. It was raining and there was likely going to be digging necessary, so Rusty scheduled us a few days out and quoted us about a thousand dollars over the phone. Morning of the appointment came. Rusty needed to reschedule. He was unable to provide a more specific timeslot then "afternoon". He said his crew was on the same type of job that they started the day prior. This was mildly annoying given that we had waited for several days (due to rain) but I was not going to find a contractor to come out in a more timely manner now, so I went with it. Our plumbers came early afternoon thursday. Blew water out of the gas line. Brought a few things up to code. Tied off some unused non-problematic lines for funzies. 4.5 man hours * 2 still no root cause. Day two involved an overnight consultation with an expert that dialed in the root cause. We dug up a riser and replaced it and by late afternoon had tested the system clean. City of garland signs off on it. Atmos come by, fails the work due to water in the pipes, and red tags the system again. I'm $1600 into plumbing at this point, including 4.5 hours of largely wasted time (which I paid without questioning). I called Rusty, he spoke with the inspector and spoke with my wife and I separately. From a customer service perspective, I expect that plumbers will come out and resolve the situation immediately - Rusty informs me he has availability in 3 days - on monday. Additionally I expect that Speakes will complete the work without additional cost. Rusty proactively informs me that the work monday will be at my cost - despite the fact that all the other work which did not fix the problem was already at my cost. All in all I was disappointed that Speakes was not more proactive about resolving a situation where a customer did not have heat or hot water. Its not the customers responsibility to pass Atmos inspection or remove water from the lines. If you are going to charge me $1600 for doing these things you probably should complete the work. read more

I have called on Speake's plumbing several times in the past for our aging house. This time I needed some help to replace all my old rotten faucets and a few other issues and they sent a fantastic plumber out named Kasey. He was the most contentious and professional plumber I have ever called on. He repaired everything and more while he was there. Unbelievable! $95.00 Labor charge to tell us what we already knew. We called them to have a valve replaced. Seriously, THE ONLY THING HE DIS WAS TURN A VALVE UNDER OUR SINK. Could not fix because he couldn't get the water turned off outside, had to call the city. Still charged us a service fee of $35 and a labor charge of $95!!!! For turning a valve, that we already knew was faulty!!!! Husband asked if there would be another charge for them to come back out, after city able to turn off water? Answer, "YES"!!!!
