Thanksgiving morning, 2018. I came down to my apt bldg lobby to pickup 2 dozen fresh Krispy Kreme donuts to a friend's dinner later on. Instead, on my hurried way back upstsirs to my apt, I tripped, slipped and fell. As i brace my fall with my right arm, i ended up sustaining an anterior right shoulder dislocation. After the acute phase of putting it back in place at Lenox Hill Hosp Emergency Room, i saw an orthopedic doctor specializing in shoulder injuries. I had an MRI as requested by the ortho-pod. I'm in now Short Term Disability from work. No surgery, thank God. So, what now? Physica Therapy and an intensive kind was what I needed. I had no idea how to go about it and whether my health insurance was going to pay. So I Googled one's close to me. I meticulously read and researched the ones close by. I found someone with history and good reviews. I honed into Andrew Wolfanger. I saw his professional CV online and was the one I was looking for. Andrew Wolfanger, PT, DPT. I said to myself, "damn, everyone of their P.T.'s have their Doctorate in Physical Therapy." I though that alone was impressive. But let's get a good couple or few sessions with this firm. SPEAR Physical Therapists and see where it goes. Well, I was so very well pleased with Andrew's work. In my gratitude to Andrew Wolfanger and the rest of his coworkers, I sent him a touchy email. I poured my heart out out, vulnerably in my utmost thanks for putting me back together, so to speak. Here is the email that I sent Andrew...... "Hi Andrew. The doctor cleared me for work. He likes your notes and he said that you're really putting me to work with the exercises.  I said that you were on me like stink on poop with tracking on the exercises. I said you were the best one around. I researched your experience thoroughly back to back. Because I would only want the best out there to out me back together. And you, my friend, Andrew, fit that bill. I dont know if all the patients tell you this and I've had my fair share of times working with physical therapists but I can say that you are at the top. You, Andrew, are the top P. T. for me in my book. Your approach to me as a patient was truthful and gave me realistic goals to reach for ( lol, no pun intended). But you helped me reach this point of returning back to work.  If I haven't said enough to you, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Truly I owe my coming back to work to your perseverance, persistence (esp when I tell out loud during those ER exercises, lol) diligence that I do what exercises you showed me in the proper way to prevent further injury. Thanks once again for all you do for my recovery. See ya tomorrow for the continuation...." Listen carefully, I am a registered nurse and who else demand no mediocre health service than a registered nurse. It is your body and how your body will lead you on to your future health. I've been seeing Ashli at SPEAR on W75th street since January. I came to her after being with a different therapist for my lower back pain and numbness of left leg. From my first meeting with her, my sessions have been amazing! She made me feel heard, at ease & didn't minimize my feelings or complaints. She listened intently and worked diligently to find what my issues were, even when I couldn't articulate it right away or lacked the words to describe the exact source. She was very thorough with her examination and evaluation. Her patience, professionalism and humor made each session pleasant. She was able to identify not only my herniated disc as contributing factors to my back problem but also my hips. By working on all these areas and strengthening my core muscles I have a much deserved relief. I still have a long way to go, but the progress I've made so far has been so rewarding & encouraging, that I've recommended SPEAR to both my family and friends. My husband sees his PT in their downtown location near his office (on Broad street) & my 10 years old daughter goes with me and sees Alyssa for pediatric PT. Both are extremely happy with their therapist, who make them work hard and challenge them just the right amount. As a mother, I love how Alyssa interacts with my daughter. She goes out of her way to make sure each session is fun for her but doesn't cut corners to keep her entertained. She pushes, encourages, and supports her with every exercises she attempts. Alyssa has the right attitude, temparment & amazing sense of humor to handle a tween who doesn't really like to exercise. Overall, from the first receptionist who answered my phone call and setup my first appointment down to all the assistants and team members who have interacted with me or my family, I have nothing but positive things to say about them. Last, the office! It's really a little gem tucked away on UWS. It's clean, bright, nice equipment with lockers and shower! It never feels crowded even though there are quiet a few therapists providing services at the same time. It's actually nice and motivating to see others work hard to overcome their challenges just like me. I love my experience so far and would definitely recomend it to everyone I know. read more

I've bounced around to a few different Physical Therapy businesses on the UWS for a few years and just by chance did I end up at SPEAR on 75th. Sometimes luck is on your side! When I randomly chose Spear from a long list from my doctor to work on "fixing" my back, I had no idea that it would be such a life-changing decision. I had been dealing with a consistent issue in my lower back that no doctor or previous PT had solved. That all changed when I was assigned to Alyssa Reyes at SPEAR on 75th. Alyssa took the time to hear what had been bothering me for over 2 years and what I had previously done to try to fix it. By the end of that first meeting, she had figured out that the pain wasn't originating in my back but was actually due to a problem in my hip joint. Within 2 weeks of working on the hip joint at SPEAR, I felt immediate results and comfort in sitting, standing, walking and running that I had not felt in over two years. Beyond my positive results, I remember thinking immediately that SPEAR was unlike any other PT I had visited. Everything was so clean, nice and spacious. Even when there were many other patients around, it never felt cramped and I felt like all my needs were always easily addressed. I was never delayed and I appreciated how prompt they were as I was often going before work. Finally, the front desk. I have NEVER felt so comfortable and confident with that side of visiting a doctor or physical therapist. I was "out-of-network, but I had ZERO issues with insurance and they were always so helpful in booking and rescheduling appointments. Can't say enough about the entire front desk -- a true pleasure! I fractured my shoulder in December and started PT with AJ towards the end of January. I've never broken a bone or needed PT in the past so had no idea what to expect. I immediately felt comfortable at Spear. Its a very welcoming, clean, organized environment and all the staff are very friendly and approachable. I have never had to wait for an appointment, I never feel rushed or unattended even when there's a lot of activity. You definitely get the impression that everyone really likes working there. Considering they work lots of hours with lots of people in lots of pain, that's really saying something! I started off in low spirits, in lots of pain and fearful. From day one, AJ has been friendly, patient, responsive and supportive. It is obvious that he has a high degree of expertise and knowledge and employs it so that the process is never stagnant, always moving forward. I know its a long road but I have 100% trust that he knows exactly how to help me get to full recovery and I see improvement weekly. Following foot surgery last summer I started PT with Ben Kraus at Spear to help me re-learn how to walk comfortably again. Ben analyzed my situation and started me on a tough (at first) but very much needed program of exercises. Ben was very patient and always encouraging, even when I wasn't strong enough to do everything as well as I wanted to. After a while, when I was much stronger but still limping, Ben, with his incredible holistic approach to my rehab, suggested the best way to get me walking normally again was to focus on strengthening my opposing hip. The foot doctor, who did a great job on my surgery, had no real interest or expertise in solving my gait and walking issues beyond fixing my foot, but Ben did! It has taken time and perseverance, but I am incredibly happy to be walking better everyday - and in NYC we need to be able to walk! Without Ben I never would have made such progress. He figured out the underlying problem to my entire difficulty, and then he set out a PT plan to guide me to a cure. I am extremely appreciative to be walking pain free - I never really thought it would happen! read more

I'm a rugby player that suffered a lateral meniscus tear in Fall 2018. I had surgery In December and started coming to Spear within 5 days post-operation. I've worked primarily with Ashli B. and she has been AMAZING! This was my first "major" injury and Ashli has been by my side pushing me, listening to my concerns and guiding me through the healing process. I'm proud to say at 3 months out that I've been cleared to return to sports and regular activity with much credit due to the Spear team. Scheduling has been a breeze and the front desk team is very friendly, flexible and on top of all matters. At times when I've been unable to see Ashli I've been well taken care of by other staff (Jaime and Jasmina) and the support team on the floor is incredible as well (Hudson and Gabe). While I'm glad to be nearing the end of my treatment I will miss this great team and will definitely be recommending Spear to my rugby teammates and co-workers in the future. I broke a bone in my foot last spring & as soon at it was healed, I went to this location for PT. From the first evaluation to every subsequent visit, my PT was thorough, empathetic, professional and willing to educate me about the rehabilitation process and not just blindly prescribe exercises. They have an app that keeps me updated on my "homework exercises" & I can ask questions or mention concerns in between appointments freely too. I've felt like an active participant in my rehab, with incredibly personalized care. When I told my PT my goal wasn't simply to return to normal activities but to run my first marathon, he adjusted my plan towards those goals. Oh and there was a couple of times that I had an appointment but no babysitter to watch my kids, and when I brought them in they were welcomed and talked to and one of the technicians even played with my busy 6 year old to keep her busy during my appointment. I saw Alyssa at SPEAR on w.75th for 9 months following an ACL tear and reconstruction. My husband and I got married 3 months after surgery and Alyssa guided my recovery so that I could wear heels with my wedding dress and then go on a 113 mile hike for our honeymoon. I was jogging comfortably soon after that. I doubt my recovery could have gone any smoother and I am very grateful to Alyssa and the rest of the team for their dedication, expertise, and compassion in helping me get through it! Alyssa guided me through pre-op strengthening and post-op immediate recovery and then mobility, balance, stretching, strength, and agility exercises, holding me back when risked injury and pushing me when I was ready. I sincerely cannot imagine regaining strength and mobility post lisfranc surgery without Michael and his amazing, patient and kind team. In addition to providing EXCELLENT coaching through the exercise sequences and therapeutic massage to stimulate recovery Michael provided education about the anatomy of my injury and healing process. Understanding I was mechanically less limited and stronger then I believed myself to be provided me the confidence and motivation to practice my exercise assignments frequently, which I think greatly accelerated my recovery time. The vibe of this place is clean, professional, comfortable and friendly, not at all intimidating. Today I am certainly stronger, with much less pain and living more fully. Was required to undergo extensive PT twice in 2018, first for a back problem and in June for a rotator cuff surgery. In both cases my therapist was Alyssa Reyes. Alyssa did an amazing job in getting me to normal functionalities in both instances. She was caring and professional in providing regular e-mail follow ups for various exercise protocols I could do at home. Both my orthopedic surgeons were very pleased and even astounded at the progress I made since I am 72 years of age. All credit to Alyssa and her fantastic colleagues. He was always spot on evaluating my condition and quick to develop a treatment plan that provided me with the optimum relief. Mike takes pride in treating his patients. I recently went through a major orthopedic surgery in the Hospital for Special Surgery. My surgeon's assistant has recommended Micheal as one of the best in the field and I have no doubt their recommendation has made my recovery most efficient and effective both in the right recovery program offering and the ultimate care and professionalism Michael has guided me through. I went in to therapy with a great difficulty walking and moving with my walker, and in less than 2 weeks, I move on to one crutch and safely walking and moving around and now with no crutch in and around the apt. So excited to review this "hands on" Clinic "Spear Therapy". I have been injured from years of repetitive movement and my Doctor suggested Spear Therapy. I was put with Michelle Troiano She has treated me with great care and has passed on many excercises to incorporate with my gym workout. Michelle has also suggested floor barre classes which is a good stabilizer. And has been a big help with making sure I understand how to stack my bones. I had ACL Surgery and this place has not only nursed me back to health but actually gotten me into the best shape of my life. I've been working with Sean the whole time and he's amazing. He was recommended to me by my surgeon at HSS which was high praise given how particular both HSS and my surgeon particularly are. That turned out to be a phenomenal recommendation. I've made great progress on the physical front and really enjoy my interactions with Sean -- he manages to keep things interesting and always has a sunny disposition (even though I'm seeing him at 7am while it's still dark outside). I saw Ben Kraus at SPEAR for about 8+ months to rehab after having surgery to repair my ruptured Achilles tendon. Ben was excellent and made the rehabbing experience very enjoyable for such a long recovery process. He worked with me to build a program that allowed me to get back to resuming my normal day to day activities in addition to playing sports in a way where I was fully comfortably and ready to go after getting the go ahead from him. I just had my third knee surgery and went to Spears upon the recommendation of my doctor. I was reluctant to go to a new therapist but I was pleasantly surprised and am I glad I did. We came to Spear when my daughter sprained her ACL at gymnastics. Alyssa Reyes was my daughter's PT and she is absolutely wonderful with children. Alyssa is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and makes PT fun. My daughter recovered faster than we anticipated and enjoyed coming to her PT sessions. The place is new, clean, and a few times that we saw other therapists, they were also great. They are also very efficient, we never had to wait, and always received appointment reminders the day before. I've been going to Spear for physical therapy while recovering from knee replacement surgery. The entire staff (Sean, Gabe & Olivia) has been friendly, knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. I like that this location has flexible scheduling, so I can come in either early morning before work or in the evening after work. The space is clean and modern, and they have a good variety of equipment to use. I would recommend Spear if you're looking for a small practice where you can get a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. SPEAR West 75th Street has been a life saver after three leg surgeries and one shoulder surgery. Michael Virgile runs a great group of people. He himself is a wonderful therapist and is thorough and attentive. The entire staff is friendly, helpful, quick to correct form. I cannot recommend this place enough, it's the best physical therapy I have ever encountered, and I have encountered a lot! A very special shout out to Ben Kraus, the therapist I am working with now.
