BBQ served by the pound on butcher block paper. Sauce on the side. No frills. Beer is served in ice buckets (great selection of Shiner). The owner let us taste before buying. I bought some of everything - ribs, sausage (they have a sausage de jour) and brisket. The coleslaw is just awesome. The ambiance is perfect. The smell of a wood smoker clings to you as you leave, making you want more on the way home. I have been trying out BBQ places between Austin and San Antonio. For what it is, it is awesome! It's a taste of historic Texas! We stumbled upon Spechts while driving thru the hill country. Lots of character, good food and an awesome ambiance on the patio with the cows grazing nearby. The sangria was tasty and served up in a big wine glass. The nachos were simple but delicious covered in beans, beef & cheese. The homemade fried mushrooms were huge & cooked to perfection. We will be back to try Sunday brunch! Very cool atmosphere, great patio area, full bar, and live music! The only thing missing was quality food. From reviewing past Yelp reviews it appears their menu has shrunk considerably - and not for the better. The brunch items are severely overpriced and very basic. We were expecting Texas size portions, pizazz, and flavor - large sandwiches and overflowing sides but instead of Texas we got the ice cold North East. The kids plates are not even worth ordering for the cost and size, I recommend just ordering an adult entree for a few dollars more and bring home leftovers. The only tasty plate between the family was the patty melt, it is definitely the most artistic and flavorful item we could see, but when paired with what appeared to be fake mash it failed. The appetizers are all sell outs to easy and cheap, as they dumbed the fried mushrooms (which from Yelp appeared to be a fan favorite) and the fried pickles to substitute for three options of chips, definitely some level of identity crisis here. I recommend going for the Bloody Mary and watch live music, take in the history of the place, take in some fresh air, and leave with your money and save yourself a negative dining experience. read more

We were excited to try this place after reading the reviews. We sat outside, which had lots of "Texas charm". There was a band starting to set up, but we left before they started as it was starting to get cold. We asked our nice waiter what was good. He said they are known for their chicken fried steak so that is what we ordered. We were quite disappointed and have had much better chicken fried steak in the area. Not bad, just not outstanding for the item they are known for. Had onion rings on the side that were very good. I think it might be a good place to go and listen to some music, have a drink but I would not go if you are just going for food. read more

This place is definitely worth a try. Food is quite good, the atmosphere was cool, but the service was non-existent. Our first trip there for a quick lunch ended up taking almost 4 hours. We got there at 1 pm and left at 3:45 pm, and we were not trying to hang out or take our time. Everything from drinks, refills, appetizers, and entrees took at least 30-45 mins from the request. The place was rather empty and slow, but it seemed they were understaffed for the little business they had. Having young children who were getting very restless and hungry made this quite problematic. Some sort of play area for kids outside would have been awesome, but they did enjoy feeding the chickens. Again, its worth a shot as I would think the service issue was an anomaly. I will give this place one more try in the future. read more

What a pleasant surprise! Under new ownership, this general store has all the expected Texan ambiance and now excellent BBQ! You cannot beat Specht's for Sunday afternoon dinner. Great food, atmosphere and live music put you in a perfect, relaxed state of mind. Kids love the room to run. Horseshoes and the ring game provide an activity outlet. Or just take in the history of a restaurant that has been around since 1890. After reading the last few reviews, having been a long time customer of this establishment... a lot of the whining that's going on is because apparently a lot of these patrons don't understand the how a restaurant/bar works. First of all... if you go to a restaurant and order beverages from the bar and then walk outside... you've just served yourself. Also, if you go to a a restaurant out in the country in the middle of summer there are going to be flies. I'm sorry these bourgeois people from San Antonio don't understand how nature works... Anyway... I've never had anything but a wonderful time here. The food is great... the staff is great. People need to learn some manners. If you want a white tablecloth fine dining experience go into town and leave this place to more salt of the earth people who know a good thing when they see it. read more

Tried to eat here for lunch after reading the great reviews. As soon as we tried to sit down at a booth, we were overwhelmed with the amount of flies inside. My husband went to get a high chair and said they were even worse in that area. We were completely grossed out and decided to leave without ordering anything but our iced teas. The flies were swarming around my daughter and the tables the whole 5 mins we were there. If they were that bad in the dining area, I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. The staff didn't seem phased by them at all so I don't think it's an isolated incident. In addition to the flies, the two servers (one with blue highlights) were outside smoking when we pulled up. There is one thing that a restaurant does that gets a one star (should be no star) is not offering tap water. I've been coming to this place for over 30 years and tonight I was refused to be served a glass of tap water. I could order a bottle of water with ice, but not tap water according to the server. It was a managers rule. Well to the manager I say this. No tap water no patronage. I will let my extended family know of this and hopefully, they will not patronize this establishment. Furthermore, this will not be on my list of Texas establishments to visit. With any luck, this management will go the way of previous management and a new management will take its place that serves Tap Water. Update to our Saturday night...went to Whataburger where they had free Tap Water. Burger, fries and milkshake for less than 12 dollars. Probably saved 20 bucks! read more

My husband has been wanting to go here and admittedly this was about a month ago but I still wanted to post this. We had heard good things and we weren't disappointed. It's definitely got a down home small town feel, the entire staff made us feel welcome. We found a nice place to sit on the covered patio. Service was excellent and again everyone was so sweet and wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. It was mid afternoon on a weekend and already was getting busy but that didn't diminish the service. I had the meatloaf, with mash potatoes, and green beans. It was so delicious. I also liked the fact they didn't fee the need to drown it in ketchup. The brown gravy was not drowning it and was very flavorful. The green beans and mashed potatoes were all perfectly seasoned and enjoyable. My husband got a burger and fries, which he said was very good too. The best part of the meal was the dessert. I got peach cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. It was so delicious, not too much crust, the right amount of filling, and none of it too sweet. A lot of cobblers are too sweet to eat. We haven't had a chance to go back yet, but I look forward to going again soon. read more

This place is a must if you're a BBQ fanatic. Honestly, it's some of the best BBQ I've ever had, and that is saying a lot. Born and raised in Houston, I've had my fair share. I've had the best from Georgia back to all the well known spots in Texas, including Austin, Lockhart, Luling and of course San Antonio. Not to mention I have a few friends that have mastered the smoker. This place is pushing the #1 spot. It is a no BS BBQ joint with damn good options all the way around. They are consistent with their brisket, sausage, ribs, chicken...it doesn't matter. The owner has nailed his recipes and incorporated some homemade side items that compete with the bbq itself. You can tell they put time in everything they serve here from the meat to the coleslaw to the desserts and of course his homemade pickles. The atmosphere is perfect with indoor or outdoor seating looking over beautiful Texas landscape with some relaxing sounds coming from a couple of acoustic guitars. The location is just off the beaten path, but plenty close enough for any day off the week. You'll feel right at home and get to soak up some Texas history while you're at it! We stopped here for dinner last week after driving some back roads in the area. I loved the whole vibe of the place, and our server was great. We had five kids with us, and sometimes that doesn't get the best response, but the people here weren't fazed at all. The cherry limeade was awesome, and our cups were never empty. On the down side, the food was pretty pricey. All in we spent $70. That's a fair bit for 3 kids meals and a burger and some nachos. Also, the bugs were insane. This place has changed ownership several times over the years. It's gone from being mediocre to good. This is my first time back since it opened back up and the food was VERY good! We had braised ribs, fried mushrooms, Cole slaw and onion rings. It was all very good! The onion rings are to die for. Everything tastes home made and not frozen. This was my visit and my last. I'm all for hole in the wall joints with great food. The food here is way overpriced and horrible, $12 for a chicken fried steak, a few fries and some soggy seasoned green beans. Seriously so bad I didn't eat it. The place is filthy. The other food my family got was just as bad. Save yourself some gas and eat in town at Willy's, Bigz, or McDonald's for that matter. The place is only kid friendly if you call an open dirty field with weeds and cactus friendly. There isn't a playground or anything for the kids to do. I have no idea how others have rated this place high. If I could give it a zero, I would. It was for my Dad's birthday dinner, so I decided a spectacle of complaining wasn't an option. read more

Last night went with a group of 8, we ordered a variety of apps and they were all very good especially the fish bites and pulled pork nachos. For my entree, I ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans - I was keeping it classic, old school! The mashed potatoes and green beans were good, nicely seasoned. But the chicken fried chicken was OFF THE HOOK delicious! The chicken was moist, tender and flavorful. The crust was light and crispy and perfectly seasoned. Best chicken fried chicken I have ever eaten. Live music was a nice touch but it's hard to talk to those in your party because the music is sort of loud but that's ok. We had 3 birthdays in our group and management gave them each a free shot of what ever they wanted! How cool is that?! We had fun, we enjoyed the food. Are all huge fans of Specht's and are happy that we are still able to enjoy an evening there. The food is the best it has ever been in years. read more

This place is my husband and my favorite place to go on the weekends. It's the ultimate Texas back roared experience where you can eat great food while watching the cows in the back pastures. We stopped in today, too early to eat lunch, but we thought maybe we'd get something to go. I ran in and was so pleasantly surprised!! The restaurant itself is beyond cute. We are from New England so the Texas themed, down home places, we think are really cool. Rustic. The guys working there were so fun and welcoming, and definitely made me feel like they were proud of their food and establishment. The owner (?) was telling me all about their live music and we can't wait to go back!! Such a cool bar atmosphere. I only got a 1/2 lb of brisket and a sausage and holy shit. It was AMAZING! The brisket was super moist, even though I didn't get sauce which I def should have (doh). Probably the best brisket we've ever had. That's huge. It was super effing good. The sausage was house made and it didn't have one flat glob or bone in it. It was silly smooth and god damn delicious. Soooo good. This place rocks. I only wish we found it sooner. Wow!!! The restaurant reopened 5 weeks ago and cranks out amazing fresh homemade food. The salsa while not spicy, was bursting with freshness. The chicken strips the kids ordered were so good that talking stopped and the electronics were put away. The short ribs were tender and the ribeye was very flavorful. Those that ate the fried mushrooms all agreed that they were some of they best they ever had. The mushrooms were small and coated in a well seasoned batter that was crispy hardly oily. The burgers were juicy and flavorful. Tara, our waiter had a great sense of humor and was very attentive. Can't wait to go back next week. read more

Went on Mothers Day for a casual dinner on the patio. Unfortunately the files were overwhelming and the wait staff were all young and immature. I don't think there was an adult in the place. Fried catfish was disappointing-- the batter was overly browned and the fish inside was thin and dry. The coleslaw was warm and limp. Went here on a Sunday afternoon with the family. We walked in and were greeted immediately and offered outdoor or indoor seating, we have three young kids we opted for outside. We walked out and they had live music playing, covered patio or non-covered, take your pick. There is a large grassy area for the kids to run around in, along with a few games, horseshoes, and bean bag toss. We started with the Fried Mushrooms served with creamy gravy, very delicious. My husband got the chicken fried steak, it was huge!!! We got a side of green beans and the kids had a corn dog with fries and then they shared a rootbeer float which was also huge. Liked the band that was playing. However the service is terrible. Waited 20 minutes, finally asked the bartender is she could help us since the waitress is the one that said she was waiting on the people inside. Took another 10 minutes to come over. Got our waters and a drink fairly quickly and then the long wait for food ( of course she came back after 30 minutes and still didn't refill water, told us the food was coming). Waited another 25 minutes and then the food got there. Food was cold. In fact I ordered a patty melt, so they toasted some texas toast- slid in a cold half cooked burger and topped it with half cooked onions ( the bread never saw a grill), absolutely the poorest excuse for a patty melt "ever". Oh and the fries were luke warm and soggy. So we spent an hour and a half waiting to be served food and the food was of poor quality. Don't expect this place to last long, not with that kind of service and poor product. Don't even know if they had a manager- cause it sure didn't look like anybody was in charge. Gave the waitress a tip, because nobody should be stiffed- but I certainly hope she and the cook have other careers they are working on, because they are not very good at the jobs they have now. I haven't been in a long time, so I would have given it 3 stars as a safety measure.. but recent 4 star reviews gives me confidence to tack on another 4 stars. I hung out here many, many times as a kid, and I can't imagine that it's really changed much since then. Watch for horses grazing nearby while you play a few games of horseshoes out back.
