they replaced their soap about 2 years ago and the one they replaced it with is just a concentrate mixed with water so it's straight liquid. It's incredibly hard to work with and anytime they give you one of these reusable bottles they are only 1/4 of the way full. The soap doesn't even clean as well as the old one we haven't been back since just because of this and everyone i talk to about it says the same. read more

I visited Specks for the first time today on 1/30/24, and the Specks staff ensured it would be my first and last visit due to the abrupt manner in which I was received. I got to the cashier at 7:45 PM, I ask if I can purchase a diy dog wash. The cashier says "Well umm..." and I interrupted her pause by saying "Oh, is it closed?" to which she responds "Well one side is closed" in an unpleasant tone. The cashier then calls for another employee and asks "Hey do you know which side of the wash is closed?" The other employee responds "Well I was about to close it down, but you can use it... the right side is open." The cashier then asks if I have a number with them. I responded no, and the cashier did not ask if I would like to provide a phone number. The cashier then tells me my total and says "for future reference we close the dog wash an hour before the store closes, but I'm gonna let you use it this time. I'll bring you some towels." I followed the cashier to the dog wash and the other employee was also in the dog wash room. The cashier sets the towels down and I say "Thank you." in the most pleasant tone I could muster. Neither the cashier or the other employee respond as they walk out of the room. So I'm left standing in this room i've never been in with no instructions. There is a washing bay with a garden hose nozzle attachment, a cart with about 10 bottles of various shampoos and conditioners, and a closed cabinet with a hose dangling from it (Which I assume was the blower for drying). I quickly sprayed my dog after I figured out on my own how to turn the water on, lathered some soap, rinsed her and hand dried her with the two provided towels, as I didn't feel comfortable opening a closed cabinet to explore whether it was a blow dryer or not. I promptly exited the store at 7:58 PM with two minutes to spare before the dog wash closed. I'm not sure if this is the normal service that customers receive, or if what I experienced was an anomaly, but I certainly won't be a repeat customer to find out. Stopped to use the dog wash. Nice facilities as all the Specs are. Don't use this one in Avon. Go a little further to the one in Plainfield. Why? One issue and it's a biggie. You are NOT allowed to close the doors to the wash room to control your dog while using the facility. I was told it's the manager's policy. My dog did get loose before I could hook up the control leash on the tub. The front doors were open. Fortunately another customer stopped her and was able to hold her before I got there. This created a situation which could have been dangerous for other customers if my dog was prone to that, but moreover could have been deadly for my dog had she got outside. Awesome paw wash station! Best part is the staff who is super friendly to our little guy who's scared walking in the door.

I love going here for the variety of animals that I now have. I can get the things I need for my dog, turtles, hedgehog and crayfish. They are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I was having difficulty keeping my tank clean and had purchased a filter via a different vender, who was not able answer my questions bc they didn't specialize in pet supplies. I told the specks employee this and I was still given extraordinary service. She told me why my filter was probably not doing it's job, what I needed to do to correct it and how to keep it running in the future. I will now only go to specks for my pet supplies. So very helpful and attentive. They're always helpful and greet you when you enter and always answer all your questions. Totally rock! read more

We trained our Australian Shepherd here and the classes were fun for both us and our puppy. The trainers were wonderful with all the dogs and patient with all the parents. They have several self wash dog bathes and we've used them for years. The store is loaded with pet food, supplies, vaccation clinics and friendly staff. read more

I was happy to find that Specks has the same type of friendly staff and specialized products that you won't get from those big chain stores. The best part? Let's see here where do I even begin?!?! I absolutely love Specks because they really care about pets and their customers and they show it loud and proud! Specks goes the extra mile by providing high quality foods for our furry loved ones. While u have a great appreciation for propylene glycol I refuse to believe it's safe for consumption. I prefer to feed my cats and dog Orijen cat and dog food. You'd think a specialty store would charge you an arm and a leg but not at Specks! Compare the prices to Amazon and there's no difference. Looking at the unit price you can really save money when you purchase the 40lb bags (I think that's right...'maybe it's more) The staff are all so friendly and my dog Arnie loves them too. Specks is wiener (dog) approved! The staff go the extra mile by carrying your items to the car which is just awesome. Oh yeah and aren't you just sick of being spammed like the dickens by those other guys? Specks will only send a monthly email highlights special sales/deals. Earlier today I emailed them with a question and by the afternoon I had a friendly response and all my questions answered! This is what you get with local businesses! Noted several people not adhering to the state mask mandate. When I mentioned this to the cashier she said "we don't really argue about that". I get that but there was no signage anywhere suggesting/required mask to shop here per state mandate. If Kroger and others can make it happen Specks can at least make a small effort. We brought our puppy here for training and were very glad we did. Their staff does a great job working the both the dogs and the owners. Our little guy was (and still is, really) all energy, but they helped us work out ways to channel that energy in training. Their price for dog training is on par with PetSmart, but I think it's a much better value as it's real training that will definitely help improve your dog's behavior, not just playtime. They also carry a wide variety of dog and cat supplies at competitive prices, even sporting a few items we couldn't find at places like PetSmart. Overall, Speck's is a great place to bring your dog for training and you can probably stock up on food and accessories while your there too. read more

Specks has a focus on higher end supplies and food primarily for cats and dogs. They do sell crickets and worms for the reptiles, and every time we have purchased super worms they have been fresh and healthy. This location used to have a large, beautiful selection of fish (salt and fresh), but after the remodel a while back they really downsized, which seemed disappointing. They now have a vet and amped up the training portion, so it really looks like they have refocused the business. I have our four dogs signed up for the birthday club - which is free - so we get postcards in the mail for a free back of treats during their birthday month (a $5 value). They partner with shelters to adopt out cute kittens and sometimes a dog rescue will be outside. If you have a dog or cat, go to Specks - a great business! read more

Super friendly and attentive staff. We were greeted as soon as we arrived and asked if we needed help. The only thing that would make it better is if they had a wider selection of things for other pets besides dogs and cats. We prefer to shop locally when we can, but with the limited products available at Speck's, we were forced to go to a larger chain pet store to get aquarium related products. read more

These are the best folks of any store I frequent. Excellent help. They know what they are talking about. And you can tell they take pride in their work. They also dont pester you. I will spend probably 20-30min reading food ingredients. And they only ask me once if I need help. The prices are great. The selection is the best I think of ANY pet supply store. Especially if you are looking for healthy dog foods. From good brands, to the best high end brands. And healthy treats aswell. read more

I love this store. They are the only store in Avon that carries my dogs food. They have many of the high quality products that you will never find at the big chains. They offer many services as well (training, bathing, etc.) But I haven't used them for that. I've always had good service from the employees as well. read more

I used to absolutely adore this store. Not as much anymore. The stock isn't half of what it used to be. I have to run back and forth between their Brownsburg store and this Avon one to buy feeder mice. Why? this is where I purchased all my reptiles and birds, and other critters. I need to support them properly now that I have them. I need all the implements, feed, gear and supplies that go with it. I'm not just merely desiring that my pets are barely sustained, no...I want them to thrive. Perhaps I wouldn't have become as alarmed if I didn't hear all the negatives from all the employees about how they feel about the new owner and his philosophy and what they say about lots of change, but not change for good. read more
