Went there Friday afternoon for the first time and have lived in Palmdale for 11 years. I had driven past the place so many times and just never got the chance to stop so my wife and daughter like to try places and different food and it gives my daughter a chance to practice her Spanish. I had the chili Verde plate and my wife the shrimp fajitas. My daughter had the 2 taco plate. We went around 3:30 in the afternoon and we were the only ones there for about 20 minutes, families started arriving after that but, we had our food already. I have to say that the food was excellent, plates were very hot so careful after getting your meal. The refried beans were great and the meat tender. This was truly a treasure find for me. I thought I'd never find an authentic Mexican restaurant in Palmdale. You'd never know it by the name, but this place would rival any authentic Mexican restaurants I've found in Arizona! I've never had a bad meal at Speedy Joe's. Heard some good things about this place. I saw the good reviews. So, I finally went in. Small place, and it was packed for a weekday. They really only had one person working/taking orders. He had some help from a lady who was helping bring out dishes. The service was slow. Had to wait a while for refills or other things that we asked for. I ordered the shrimp enchiladas. No flavor at all. Rice and beans were ok. My son ordered a child's quesadilla. I was surprised at how small his quesadilla was. Wasn't a lot of food for a Mexican restaurant. They usually have good size plates (even for kids). The food wasn't horrible. It just wasn't anything to brag about. Not impressed. It's hard to find decent Mexican food out here in the AV. I remember eating here almost every day when I was pregnant with my daughter, who is 23 now. It was so good then. I hadn't been since I had her, honestly didn't even know it was still open. Never really on that side of town, but I was shocked to see it still there. Stopped in not expecting much, after all it had been over 20 years. Great customer service as soon as we walked in. This is one of my favorite mexican food places in town. It is a small family owned restaurant with very few people dining so you can have the place only shared amongst a few people. Sit down food with very friendly family and food is ready very fast. Try the Camarones Antonio. It is awesome. It is grilled shrimp stuffed with crab and cheese served with rice and beans. Their burritos here are big and very good. This is a perfect spot to eat leaving the mall headed back to Lancaster or for a quick lunch. Listen, this place has been in existance since the early 80s...its an old converted house, with not the nicest of amenities for certain. My wife and i joke its a money laundering operation. We still go ...and we are in our early 40s. As far as mexican food, its the tastiest well prepared food one can get.. Ive never had any bad experience there EVER. The food is very reasonably priced...we have been going there for the last 20 years...its clean, but worn for certain. Ok, so I decided to take my husband and my sister out for lunch. They haven't had the pleasure of tasting the yummy food that comes out of this "hole in the wall" place, upon entering we were greeted by Rudy (the owners son) he was funny and attentive and made it feel like we were visiting family. We each ordered something different. The chili Verde was AMAZING. Crazy authentic (go figure) chicken flautas were perfectly cooked ( not too crispy, come on..They arent taquitos!) and the Enchiladas were very good! I've had sauce that tastes like it's right from a can..but this was very tasty( even if it was from a can) the rice and beans were great..all in all Speedy Joes is a great little family owned business that operates in a very modest building...they may skimp on showy restaurant appeal BUT they make up for that with great tasting food! If you're looking for great mexican food at a good price, Speedy Joe's is the place! Ok, so it's pretty much the ugliest looking place on the outside and inside is pretty sad looking too but, it's clean. The gentleman brought us over chips and salsa, this tends to always be my first indication if the place is going to be good. It was really good! I ordered the combination 2 items, chicken taco and a beef tamale (sauce on the side). $9.95 and a Pacifico $4.75 ( it's was almost the size of a pitcher!) My friend ordered the Taco's El Carbon, he said they were really good too. Everything had so much flavor! Chicken so many times lacks seasoning but not in this case! I personally thought my shredded taco meat was better than his and I think he agreed but, both good! The tamale was good, it did have a lot of the corn mesa but, for me, I like a lot of corn mesa. I came here because of the high Yelp reviews, but left disappointed. Why so many comments about being "authentic"? First off, I really don't care if a restaurant serves authentic cuisine. I was just at The Bazaar which is Spanish tapas. Is duck liver coated in corn nuts and wrapped in cotton candy authentic Spanish food? Heck, no. But was it really good? Heck, yes. Secondly, this is not authentic Mexican food, but the Americanized version. Not that it matters because I give stars for good food, not authenticity. To be simple and clear, the food wasn't that good. The three best words to describe the food would be mild, flavorless, and bland. If you like rich, flavorful, luscious, and delectable food, then don't come here. The salsa here is the mildest I've ever had at a restaurant. So if you like the weak salsa or can't eat Mexican food because it gives you heartburn, stay and have dinner because the rest of the meal will have less heat and less flavor. The food here is also good for someone on a low sodium diet because they don't season anything. The margaritas don't use tequila because they don't have a full liquor license. I went to Speedy Joe's for the first time after passing by it for over 10 years. I am always looking for a good burrito so we stopped by. The building is run down and beat up just like the other reviewers noted. I figured I would give it a shot and see if the food could over power the crusty look of the exterior. Sad to say the answer is no. I had a chicken burrito that was supposed to have chicken sauteed in onions and bell pepper. I had to search for the bell pepper and found two pieces about 1/2 inch square. There was some onion and lots of chicken that was mostly dry and rubbery. We also ordered a carne asada burrito. The meat was flavorless. No salt or spices at all! Each burrito came with massive amounts of mild sauce burying the burrito. The chips and salsa were good. It took almost 20 minutes to get our food and the place only had 5 other customers waiting. The service was decent. Sodas were $2.25 each which is ridiculous even if you get refills. We get food at Speedy Joe's every time we drive back from Los Angeles. I have eaten Mexican food from coast to coast and Speedy Joes has some of the best I've ever had. I have to say for general speaking, if you want good portions for not a bad price this is a fine place to go. I never mind the "hole in the wall" look or feel that this place had, as most hole in the walls can surprise with the food, this was not the case. While the service was great and friendly, if you want good Mexican food there is much to be desired. Beans are a watery mess, the food was bland and left much to be desired, and I'm not sure what was in the salsa Verde, but it had a rancid smell and off taste. I will say the chips and salsa were on point. If you want any kind of mixed drinks they don't have a full liqour license so don't expect much there. My wife asked me to try out Speedy Joe's. I've been driving by the place for generations now, and never set foot in the place. . . like some other reviewers here. When my best friend asked me to take him out for a meal, we knew this was our time to check the lil' ol' place out. So the three of us went. Yes, the restaurant looks like a tract house on the outside, and looks small. It's not a big chain restaurant, of course, and does not pretend to be. When you step inside you realize this is a smaller size family run restaurant that will seat around seven tables worth of people. . . maybe 30 or 40 people at the maximum. Two tables are tables,the rest are booths, including one large size family booth. The tables move about to accommodate larger plus size folks, and the booths do not. Now you know. Everything inside is up to snuff, clean and in good working order. So what if the roof coating on the ceiling is older material? It suffices very well. . . don't be a fussbudget about it (unless you're Lucy Van Pelt, of course). The smaller size tube television was on, with volume, but I couldn't tell what game was on from my table. Don't come here for the television. . . Buffalo Wild Wings is so much better for that. You may find you may need to whisper to your guests if the place isn't too full with patrons. . . this restaurant is on the quieter side, fyi. The food: beverages and chips with salsa come out first, of course. The chips are warm, and are ready for the salsa. The salsa is not particularly hot, but is diced tomatoey and a bit on the runny side. No biggie. Glad to have it at the table. The food came on time and on hot plates, as ordered, and large portioned for our tastes. The refried beans were hot and stayed warm longer than expected. . .a plus. My chile relleno was done right, not too much cheese, not too much batter. Not too hot, either. Just a great pepper. The burritos were huge and restaurant oven hot. The taco was overflowing with lettuce, and oversized to my way of thinking. I love lettuce! Delicioso! Fantastico! Yes, they do doggie bags and takeout orders. Just a note about using a wheelchair here: you can come with a wheelchair and use one of the two tables for eating, but when it comes to using a restroom. . . both the men's and women's facilities are one able bodied person at a time. Not ADA wheelchair accessible. This is due I'm sure to when the restaurant was first established around or just before 1990, the year the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. It would never pass muster by city code check planners today. Good location right across from WalMart and Buffalo Wild Wings. . . good facility that one ought not be ashamed of, humble abode as it is. . . and great food. . . a winner!
