I lived in the Clinton Hill area for 14 years, and I vividly remember when Speedy Romeo opened its doors. It immediately attracted a loyal following, and I frequented the place (and ordered delivery) quite a bit before moving to Queens five years ago. It's nice to see that it survived the pandemic and still going strong when so many other businesses in the area seem to have turned over. My friend and I had lunch there yesterday, and it was a great experience overall. They have a great two for $20 lunch special, where you can choose from a side Caesar salad, beet salad, or stuffed peppers (2) and any of their signature pizzas. I went with the Caesar and the St. Louie, and my friend went with the stuffed peppers and Mike's Broccolini. Our server was attentive and funny, and the food came out quickly. Everything was delicious. My only minor critique is that I remember the pizza being crispier in the past, and there were a couple of bites of sausage that contained small, hard pieces of cartilage, but I guess that's always a risk when you're meat eater. :) I hope this place continues to thrive and isn't replaced with the same, overpriced, cliche "new American" type of joint that seems to have proliferated throughout the area. TL:DR version: Food 5/5, Service 0/5, Ambiance 3/5 5-star review for food only, and here's why: This is a long overdue review since I've been dining at Speedy since I attended school in the area and have been back here everytime I am in the neighborhood. The food is absolutely amazing and it is always on point from apps to pizza to the various desserts. Always been a great time here whether dining alone at the bar or dining with a group in the dimly lit old body shop interior, very rarely you can find gems like this in the city anymore especially after the pandemic. Most recently had the stuffed pepper, the Anton Ego Pizza (great reference by the way), meatballs, and the chocolate cake and 2 glasses of red. However, with the above being said, the service has been a completely disaster in the most recent visit. Not only that the server is completely indifferent in the entire service (didn't said a word the entire dinner except asking if I would want dessert). The server (and by extension the bartender) didn't know anything about wine and proceed in pouring a glass of oxidized wine for my first glass and thankfully the 2nd glass was fresh. The cherry on top here is that the manager has the audacity to sit right next to me and proceed in plugging in her laptop (with a dangling cable) and start typing obnoxiously loud at the bar despite having about 10 other seats and tables in the restaurant that are empty. Mind you, the restaurant has music going on, with an open kitchen, and other patrons in the space. As a hospitality veteran myself, I would hope that the management would see this review and really take a hard look at the whole FOH team because unfortunately they are the ones that are holding back the potential of this restaurant. Maybe ask the headchef for his opinion because he definitely notice some problems from the kitchen but not able to overstep his boundary. And quite frankly, if any of my restaurant managers work on a laptop at the dining room while there's a whole room of customers who are obviously being neglected because she (I believe her name is Katherine) isn't paying attention, she would be gone before the shift is over. Because unfortunately, that sort of behavior is simply toxic and leads to other FOH staffs being lazy resulting what I had experienced. As a result: Food 5/5, Service 0/5, Ambiance 3/5 (minus 2 because the ridiculous manager, like seriously?) To the owner of speedy, seriously, hire someone better for your manager. Expectations were low. Friendly staff and quick service. I can say that outdoor seating was optimal since it can get stuffy inside. Food wise - it looked better than it tasted. The chefs are creative with the menu but the three we had were a mixed bag of too much or too little of good combined ingredients. The St. Louis was the best in terms of balance. Had dinner at Speedy Romeo on Tuesday night. Good elements, but the speciality pizzas seemed to be doing too much. I would be interested in getting a basic pie. Quality: Speedy Romeo seems to combine Neapolitan and Detroit style pizzas. A level of crispiness, but still some soft uncooked dough for balance. The two pizzas we ordered were more focused on the toppings. The Dangerfield, which had meatballs, ricotta, basil, and garlic did not work for me. It was the meatballs, which came out with a poor texture, tasting too much like they were cooked twice. The Truffle Shuffle was better with hot soppressata, pepperoni, and truffle ranch. A nice amount of spiciness. However, they both needed more cheese. The Speedy Caesar was okay, though it could have used more than one single anchovy. Quantity: Two pizzas and a salad were perfect for three. Value: $14 for the Speedy Caesar. $21 for the Dangerfield. $25 for the Truffle Shuffle. Ambiance: Speedy Romeo is located in Clinton Hill. The corner pizza spot, has a dim industrial design. It feels a little like a basement, and a place that has not changed much over time. There were lots of tables filling in the space as well as some bar seating. They have two outdoor areas, the side one is where we ended up sitting. Both enclosed and with plenty of heater lamps to keep things toasty. Crowd: Inside was packed on Tuesday evening, luckily the weather was warm enough for us to sit outside. Come to Speedy Romeo if you want bad service and mediocre food. We started our experience with being shoved at the door by a waiter. A waitress critiquing our intake of water. And the staff waiting 20 minutes till they actually took our order. Mind you the service was actually pretty slow. The staff is a mess. The staff is hanging out in the front eating their food and causing a commotion. We waited extremely long for pasta that was mediocre. You could tell the pasta was undercooked. It was extremely chewy with salsa and pasta ration 4:2. This is specifically the deconstructed meatball. A neighborhood icon for those of us in Clinton Hill. I have been here at least once a month since moving here a year ago. Some favorites on the menu are the St. Louie pizza and the Chicken Wings Diablo. The St. Louie pizza comes with tomatoes, cheese, soppressata, and pickled jalapenos. The combination of spicy, tart, and salty is amazing - definitely a top 5 pizza for me. The chicken wings are super interesting and are more grilled than fried. The wings, are covered in a mildly-spicy barbecue/hot sauce-esque sauce and a buttermilk herb and celery sauce. The wings are always moist and falling off the bone and full of flavor. I will say that the one time we picked them up, by the time they got home, they were soggy and not as flavorful. The prices are a little steep with the pizza coming out to $23 and the wings coming out to $13 for 6 and $21 for 12. Definitely a splurge pizza outing for me, but always worth it. read more

I passed Speedy Romeo so many times on my way to Clementine or when I traveled on the 48 headed to Green point, and so I was happy I finally tried their pizza out. I ordered the Artichoke and split it with my friend; It was wonderful. The style of pizza was a thin crust which is perfect for me since I am not much of a bread person. Sauce is bright and acidic (as all sauces should be) and the container of pickled peppers provided another source of acidity to cut through the meat and cheese. Never disappoints. Due to COVID, we haven't enjoyed Speedy Romeo's as much as we used to. We were a party of 3 and sat in one of the outdoor heated cubbies. It was very comfortable. Food was on point - stuffed peppers (my fav), meatballs (don't recall them coming with that bread but I'll order it again and again for that reason!), the King Salami (bangin') and the white album (not a white pizza fan but loved this). And the peppers for the pizza- love this option instead of crushed red pepper, so much flavor. Well early on Sunday's, the restaurant seems rather understaffed with the host doubling as my waitress. She's quite efficient and very kind as is the rest of the staff. I look around the restaurant and see everyone quite satisfied in their meals and I'm not going to be a "food creep" and take pictures of their meals. The ice coffee was good nothing special but did the job. The pizza is taking freaking forever, I was even able to fit a job interview between ordering and still waiting for my pizza. I'm hoping the length of time is correlative to it's deliciousness but we'll see. Well I saw, as the Truffle Shuffle, shuffled right into my mouth. This a very good pizza, the pepperoni blended with the truffle-ranch cheese is unexpectedly delicious. Each flavor accentuates the others creating a rich tapestry of texture and flavor. Made a last minute reservation for dinner on a Thursday night. Ordered two pizzas: St Louis - 3 stars. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good. Ordered because it was in all the reviews. Ultimately the provel cheese was a turn off. I'd never heard or had it before but it's like a white American cheese. The pickled peppers were good though. Mike's Broccoli - 4 stars. This pizza was good! I honestly think the Mike's hot honey seals the deal, but the broccoli had a nice wood fired taste and went well with the sausage. Price is on the higher end for pizzas that are actually on the smaller side. Ended up paying $60 including tip/tax. We didn't get drinks. Service was good, not sure what the negative reviews around service are about. Would I return? Probably not, but that's because in NYC I want an NYC slice. read more

We tried to make a last minute reservation on Resy but there was nothing available for the same day, so we just walked in. They told us that the wait for two people would be about half an hour, and we asked whether we could sit at the empty table outside. What seems to be objective is the terrible rude waiter, a man with blond hair who also wore a skimpy tank top. He was very strange and unprofessional. I swear there is nothing about this pie that I would change... every bite is fantastic Also fantastic is The White Album (roasted garlic, ricotta, provel, pecorino, and the super creamy bechamel sauce). Words can't even express what happens when these cheeses meld together. Best white pizza I've ever had, anywhere. If you're in the neighborhood around lunch time (M-F, 12-4pm) then I hiiiiiighly suggest you try their lunch special: appetizer (from a select list) and pizza (also from a limited list). Both of my favorite pizza's are on the list - as are several apps. I've tried three so far and all have been excellent: Grilled Beet w/ ricotta, watercress, and hazelnuts. I am not a beet fan... but this dish is something special. The House Mozzarella with slices of butternut squash and served with toast. Yum! The Speedy Romeo Caesar salad with romain, classic caesar dressing and a mountain of thinly shredded parm cheese. Can anything be bad when there's a mountain of parm up top? Um, the answer is 'no.' Boooooo! Used to be amazing! Now that there is NO BRICK OVEN even though they still advertise it as a "brick oven pizzeria." You can absolutely tell in the flavor of the dishes. It was all very lackluster. Service was nice enough, but I was so bummed that they shoved us into a tiny corner spot because we were a couple with a toddler. The place was empty. And we still had no room for any of our food so we took everything to go. Just hire more servers please, We stood outside and extra hour after showing up on time for pickup. Just three regular margherita pies, it doesn't get any easier. The oven is 900 degrees, these pizzas take 1 minute or so to cook, c'mon. My bill was 80 dollars three personal pies and three lemon sodas. The pizza finally came out. It was cold.
