This place is tucked away off the main street. They offer a nice place to relax and escape from the city and it feels like you have entered a far away cafe. Found this little gem on Young Street by accident while searching for somewhere to get great sandwiches. My son got the garlic steak and strawberry-lemon soda which he really enjoyed and said he would like to go again. I didn't have enough time to snap photos of what he ate but got one of what I did. The ambiance is homey and relaxing with soft piano music. Staff is friendly, and free wifi is available. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that there is an upstairs area here! If you're like me and don't like feeling cramped while getting your work done, then I think you'll like this place. Upstairs there are power plugs and space for about 10 people to work comfortably, maximum of about 16 people. Downstairs there are a couple of seating areas for larger groups of 4. They have a good menu of sandwiches that look packed with delicious veggies. I wasn't able to try any food this time (wasn't hungry), but I ordered the Iced Honey Lemon Tea, which was perfectly refreshing! There is a parking lot right out front (staff told me 2 hour limit), or street parking is also available. They also have a gender neutral bathroom. They're a small spot that probably has a max capacity of 25.. maybe 20. They're run by this cute couple that tag teams the orders. There's a minimum of one purchase per person while staying there. They've a bunch a sandwiches and has an AWESOME grilled cheese and tomato soup combo - this is my FAVORITE place for tomato soup and grilled cheese. They even place it on a plate for you, that's perfect for instagram. They also have a selection of interesting books for you to read while you wait - especially the art of the latte. lol Perfect spot, secluded to get a some snacks in while trying to get stuff done. I have loved this little family owned cafe for years! I used to come here to study, get a random drink (they have a lot of creative ones that I've never seen before), grab a sandwich, and study there for a few hours while calm soft music was playing in the background. With the same nice Lady and Man always behind the counter (I believe to be the owners) who always personally serve you your order. I don't have much negative things to say about this place other than needing to watch your head while going to the upstairs seating area. Their drinks are quality, their food is delicious, the atmosphere is serene and unique, and they treat you like you're family. Sometimes they even throw in a little extra treat with your order. Covid changed a lot of businesses, but nothing seems different in regards to quality of food and service here. I highly recommend visiting this cafe at least once in your life. read more

I only found about this place earlier this week. It all started when I saw fellow Elite John N. post his sandwich pic from here on Facebook. The mixed avocado sandwich. One look at it and I was like "OMG..............." So I marked this place high on my list of places to try. So, when I received a text from a friend earlier today asking if I had plans for lunch, I strongly suggested this place. Fortunately he agreed and we came here for lunch at about 1230pm. This coffee house is one of the handful of Korean operated establishments under this address. My friend got here first and sent me a text warning me about the hideous parking and that he suggested I find street parking. As I arrived my friend fortunately saved a table as they seem to be a high-demand item here! Shortly after sitting down I observed several couples looking for a table after realizing no tables were open on the ground floor. They went to check the upstairs seating only to come back down... Because of John N. I ordered the mixed avocado sandwich: avocado, alfalfa sprouts, shredded carrots, homemade coleslaw, pickles, egg and ham served between slightly toasted wheat bread. With your sandwich you can choose from a side salad or chips (Funyuns) and it comes with a cup of coffee. The sandwich is just under $10 but it is sure MASSIVE. It was sort of hot and muggy so the staff told me for 50 cents, I can upgrade my drink to the iced Spero Spear coffee, which I did. The food came out quite quickly and I was in awe when I took the first look at it. You can see the various layers of veggies and protein between the bread. Wrapped nicely with parchment paper, it was convenient as this sandwich can be messy, depending on how you attack this beast! One word to describe this sandwich: refreshing. You can taste the avocado, sprouts and slaw then you enjoy the crunch of the carrots and slaw. As you take more bites you get into the pickle and meats and the sandwich is dressed with a pseudo Thousand Island dressing that brings this sandwich together. The side salad was a small portion of wild greens and julienne carrots dressed lightly with olive oil and balsamic vinegar topped with sliced almonds. I was advised the sandwich usually comes with some potato wedges but because they were all out, sliced bananas were substituted. My iced Spero Spera coffee had a unique flavor. It was unsweetened so I added some Splenda and a dairy creamer, which made my drink yummy! My friend, who I later found out he doesn't like avocados, tomatoes and mushrooms, pretty much didn't have a large selection to choose from as most of the sandwiches here have those ingredients. But he ended up getting the salami potato sandwich, which I thought was an interesting combo as I read it on the wall. It was served between french bread and seasoned with some type of dried Italian herb mix. I tried it and it was really good. I'm not much of a fan of spuds but this was indeed a unique sandwich. The staff came back to check up on us as she knew it was both our first time here. We were very satisfied with this place and I'll sure be back again. NOTE: 1) Parking here is an issue. Because this coffee shop shares the parking stalls with other establishments it's competitive. Or, as my friend had experienced today, he was asked 3x to move his car to make way for other cars to leave! Because I was warned I parked on the street and the parking lot attendant even asked me which one was my car so that I could move it, not knowing I parked on the street! 2) Credit cards accepted here. I first heard about this place when Paul C. got Review of the Day in August of 2014. I had been to this cute restaurant once before (for a late lunch/early dinner) and wanted to share it with my new Yelp buddies! I was so happy that they agreed that Spero Spera has great ambiance and yummy food! The first time I dined here, I sat downstairs on the main floor and enjoyed watching the customers come and go while I devoured my Garlic Steak sandwich and Acai Bowl. During this second visit with Yelpers, we ventured upstairs, sat comfortably together and had a nice chat while soft, calming music played in the background! I had the Garlic Steak sandwich (again) and it was just as delicious as the first time, on a toasted baguette with melty cheese and a side green salad! It came with a free cup of tea (hot or iced). I chose the Strawberry Lychee flavor - very good! Our food and drinks were delivered to us by the friendly and cheerful cashier! Located on Young Street, near Keeaumoku, Spero Spera shares a parking lot with several other businesses. We were really lucky with the parking - there were a couple of open spaces in the front. (It was after 7pm.) There were a few tables with students and their laptops, using the free WiFi. The place wasn't filled to the max, but had a steady flow of customers. The décor was what was most amazing... There are positive quotes on the walls with corresponding pictures. Some pictures are really cute - like cartoons! Even the restroom was interesting! Ever since The Modern Honolulu discontinued their Steak Sandwich a few years ago, I've had a hole missing from my heart. Yesterday a friend recommended I check this place out, so I got the avocado steak sandwich today. For us, we were lucky enough to find street parking very near the cafe, so there was no issues for us as far as parking goes. Plus it was good we parked on the street, cuz we ended up staying longer than the two hours, and actually closed out this place at 10 PM. As we walked in, we were greeted by a friendly Korean lady, and she took our orders right away. The menu is not too extensive as far as food goes, but if you had a chance to try their sandwiches.............I must say that the sandwiches were pretty delicious! We ordered the following the other night - 1. Mixed Avocado sandwich 2, Garlic Vegetable Both sandwiches came with either chips or salad, we both took the salad. And the meal also came with either coffee, or tea. I would say it was a pretty great deal, as both meals costed a measly $20 smackers! So den', how was da grub-a-dub-dub? Nicole K., Sara S., Wes J. and I carpooled over to Spero Spera because we heard parking would be tight. Parking was tight. Literally, the one space that was open was small. I didn't want to aggravate the korean gangsters smoking outside by trying to fit my tiny car between their cool cars. I pulled into an open "reserved" spot and hoped for the best. The interior is cute and koreany. There's an upstairs part and a downstairs part. You order on the ground floor and can opt to sit upstairs, especially if the downstairs seating is full. The menu contains sandwiches, coffees, teas and smoothies. Prices are pretty high, but the sandwiches come with salad or chips, and items are made fresh. I had a mixed avocado sandwich with salad. The salad was good once I picked out the sliced ginger (I hate ginger). The sandwich was just okay for me, not spectacular. It also came with two slices of potato. Kinda weird, but ok, thanks. I also had an iced passion tea, also not spectacular. My meal was significantly less expensive than my friends', meaning I probably got the 50cent tea with purchase of sandwich deal. We weren't told of the deal and only saw it on yelp after we ordered. The "service" was nice, but soooooo slow. We waited 30+ minutes for three sandwiches!!!! Whaaaaat?! It wasn't even crowded... Spero Spera is a small Korean Coffee Shop just like the ones you'd find in Seoul (except with Acai Bowls instead of Honey Toast). They make great, Asain-style sandwiches which are lighter and don't feature mustard and mayo the way American sandwiches tend too. I love the Salami and Potato and the Garlic Steak sandwiches. The rolls are always nicely toasted so they are warm without being hard or dry and the flavor combos of the meat and melty cheese are winners! For veggie lovers, try the cold Mixed Tomato which has shredded carrots, tomato, sprouts, and egg on sandwich bread, this sandwich is light and refreshing. All sandwiches come with either a Side Salad topped with carrots, almonds, and ginger or Fun Yuns, and extra bonus for dine-in customers only, they give a free small house coffee. I've tried a few other items on the menu like the Acai Bowl and the Juices, but the real winners are the sandwiches. Luckily since my sandwich was cut into 4, I just ate the other 3 pieces. -I just can't justify paying $9+ for a sandwich, and then $5 for a green tea latte!!! -Parking lot is really narrow and limited - We waited for our food for a long time. I had the mixed Avocado sandwich ($~8) which was like, amazing for a mostly vegetable sandwich - it had coleslaw, avocado, carrots, cheese, ham, bacon, egg loaf, alfalfa sprouts. The sandwich is huge. It comes with free coffee/water and a heaping pile of funyuns (when was the last time you had funyuns?). For the amount of food and quality, I don't think it's expensive at all. The Spero Spera salad was dinner. I get this salad whenever I can. It is my favorite salad. It is full of freshness from the veggies and fruit to the salad dressing. The menu features handmade classic comfort foods and some modern alternatives for the health conscious. My lady friend and I shared the avocado and egg club on whole wheat bread with a side of tomato bisque. The meal is a slightly-better-than-adequate rendition of the traditional mom 'n pop soup & salad combo found elsewhere. The sprouts and fresh avocado justify the slightly higher price tag; we paid $22 in total for the meal and two beverages. Other items on the menu include acai bowls, fresh fruit smoothies, an indian crepe, and the full gamut of hot and cold caffeinated drinks. I admire the simplicity and unpretentiousness of the place. Visitors won't be distracted by live music, poetry jams, book readings, or public seances. It's ideal for intimate social gatherings and conducive to focused work. There's free high speed WiFi and comfortable seating inside of the spacious, two-level storefront. To be sure, the kindly couple that owns the place encourages visitors to purchase at least one item from the menu in order to enjoy the ambiance and other conveniences. Parking is limited in the lot outside of the shop. Stopped in for a quick dessert and it was a cute and friendly place, way more interesting than it looks from the street. Plus .... espresso with ice cream !!! 2 of the 3 major food groups !!!
