Buyers beware! I bought a car on-line through E-Bay from this dealer. In his item description, he stated that the car "runs and drives great" and a "couple of small dings and scratches but nothing major." As well, he stated that the "interior is in great shape." When I received the car through the carrier on May 20, 2018, the was far from the condition the car was in and it will cost thousands to get the car in decent shape. Furthermore, the dealer stated that the car again "runs and drives great." Well, it took the carrier approximately one hour to get the car off the truck/trailer because it would not crank, and it will not crank today (5/21/2018) as I type this review. In my opinion this is one of the worst car dealerships you can buy from. I plan to sue for fraud because I was misled just to make a sale. I bought a Ford F250. Told me that truck was bulletproofed, implying it was in great condition, and studded and could last 1,000,000 miles the next week I found out it needed repairs over $10,000. I tried to get my title and left a negative since they weren't responsive to my call and was blackmailed and told if I didn't take down the review that he would tear up the title and send me a video of him doing it. And the some of the comments are very similar. Also I am filing a complaint with the Connecticut DMV and will escalate to the attorney general if I am not refunded fully of my purchase along with money for gas and antifreeze (since the engine keeps overheating). I purchased a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta with around 100,000 miles on it from this 'dealership' on August 14th, 2020 for $2,800. Originally, I had went to Sphinx on August 7th looking for a car I could take off the lot. They told me that they could have this vehicle ready to be taken off the lot on the following Monday. Monday afternoon, I took the drive up there to pay the $500 deposit and to give them my license information so I could pick the car up later that day. Before I was supposed to leave to pick up the car, I called to confirm it would be ready. When I called, I was informed that the car wouldn't be ready till the next day because it needed a new coolant fan. At first, this didn't bother me and I called them the next day to confirm my car would be ready. However when I called on Tuesday, I was told that the coolant fan they got malfunctioned and that the new part wouldn't come in till that Thursday and my car wouldn't be ready till the 14th. This annoyed me, as I was going off to college and need the car as soon as possible. However, I waited because my mom and I have had a hard time finding a good car and this seemed to be the one! Finally, I picked it up that Friday and made the hour and a half drive back home! All was well on the way home and reversed my car up the driveway! The next morning, I went out to run some errands and when I was done and ready to go back home, my car wouldn't reverse. Immediately, we called Anthony and he told us that if we drove it up, he would fix the problem for free, and said it was most likely not a big problem, but the mechanic wouldn't be in till August 18th. Reluctantly, I brought the car up the hour and a half drive knowing I was going to be needing a new transmission. I dropped it off the minute they opened that Tuesday. After a couple of days, they confirmed that I needed a new transmission and said they would replace it, but it probably wouldn't be done that week. This really frustrated me, as that Saturday I was moving into my dorm room and starting college. Anthony told us that realistically my car wouldn't be ready till Monday the 24th, we explained that we couldn't wait till Monday and thankfully they were able to finish it Friday the 21st at 5:30pm. We brought the car home and I made it to college that Monday. The week came and went and it was time for me to come home for the weekend, as I wasn't too far from home! I made it home and ran some errands on Sunday and went to get some gas afterwards. The gas station I went to was only five minutes away from my house. After getting gas I turned my car back on and immediately noticed my check engine light turned on, which seemed random. I made it 300ft down the road before my car started overheating in the danger zone. Confused, I pulled over and waited for my car to cool down. Since I was so close to home, I waited for it to get back to its normal temperature and tried to drive it again. I got another 300ft and pulled over again. I sat there for 40 minutes and reluctantly decided to just try to safely make it home. However, I got another 300ft before it started overheating again. I pulled over another time and sat there for a hour and a half. Assuming I was close enough to make it home, I tried to make it the whole way, throwing my car into neutral when I could. But, I didn't make it far. Finally, I gave up and called my mom to pick me up. I was only a minute down the road from my house. We went home and waited a little over two hours and returned to my car with my scanner. We turned on the scanner and saw the code "P0117: Engine coolant temp Circuit Low Input." Annoyed, I decided just to finish the drive home no matter what. Most of the time, I kept my car in neutral with my hazards on until I had to go up the hill by my house. Slowly, I made it up with my car super close to being in the danger zone. Thankfully I threw my car into neutral and made my way up the driveway. Knowing, I had to go back to school the next day, I called a local mechanic. They towed my car and fixed my car immediately knowing it was an emergency situation. They diagnosed the problem and told me that I needed a new water pump and temperature gauge mounted on my radiator. Also they advised me that I should replace my timing belt for little cost. I agreed and we reluctantly paid $1,300 to fix my car. The next day, they called to inform me my car was ready and that when they replaced the water pump, the water pump had been 'obliterated'. Obviously, I asked if I could keep the part, since they told me that the fins on the water pump shattered off of it. The main part of this that bothers me, was that Sphinx had told me they would fix and replace anything that was major and made the car unsafe to drive. But not even with 24 hours of having the car, my transmission needed to be replaced! They sent an 18 year old new driver, home with a car that had transmission issues! I LOVE shopping! I am quite a savvy shopper. But I don't share the same sentiment when shopping for a car. I had been putting it off for a year. I dread dealing with car salesman, and just the entire process completely. It's a known fact that males are often ignored, patronized and ripped off at the car dealership. And so I did my research, got pre-approved for a loan and got two quotes for my trade-in ahead of time. As I have lost confidence in car dealerships, I went with Platinum 06/15. But that experience proved to be my worst nightmare. But that will have to be on a different review because this review is all about my experience with Sphinx Motorcar in Waterbury, CT. After many hours of test drive, I decided on the 2011 RAV4. I was sent to see Mr. Anthony on the at sphinx. I was thinking this was gonna take forever! He was juggling between the phone, computer, the lot and the customers. When it was our turn, I was actually expecting him to address my brother as opposed to myself. But, I was wrong. He asked me what I was looking for and I told him that what I had in mind was a RAV4 SE Hybrid, black exterior, black interior with the Soft-tek leather, the JBL sound system, and dark rims. As they are out of the SE, he proceeded to inform me on the difference between the SE hybrid and the LE. And an LE was one of the ones I test drove minus all the specs I required. Mr. Anthony went to work. He found me the LE premium with all the specs I want except for the dark rims. He assured me that he will replaced the rims for the kind that I desire (and he gave me many options). Working his magic on the paperwork, he indulged with me with an even amount that my OCD-self just had to have. It took no time at all. So, heading to the financing dept of the credit union, a spark of faith for car salesman was ressurected in me. However, my excitement what short-lived. I should've known that the long list of people waiting for financing was a bad foreshadowing of what's to come. Long story short, we walked away. Disheartened, I returned to Mr. Anthony's table to thank him and to let him know that we will not be going through with the sale as the credit union presented me with some preposterously low credit score and high APR. Sensing my consternation and my brother's agitation, Mr. Anthony said "let me see what I can do for you." We have been there for nearly 6 hours, I was on the verge of tears! So nonplus, I found myself following Mr. Anthony. And within minutes, he was able to pull up a more legitimate number for my credit score, approved me for a loan, accepted my trade-in offer from Carmax, and schedule to deliver my car to my house with a huge bow! And only then after I grabbed some of his business cards did I learn that he was Director of VIP Sales and Community Engagement. No wonder. What I love about this whole experience is the fact that Mr. Anthony made the entire car-buying experience about ME; not about the dealership, not about himself. Often times, sales representatives everywhere forget that. They miss the opportunity to truly listen and be mindful of the customer's needs in order to build that confidence...that trust. Mr. Anthony is the finest of his kind. His many years of experience and passion for his craft eminates whether in person or over the phone. He is customer-oriented, a listener and he is always a true professional. And despite a minor set-back with my customization, Mr. Anthony was always very vigilant keeping me abreast with the status of my vehicle. Two weeks later, he delivered my car with everything as promised, especially with a huge bow! I mean, talk about making me feel special! He took the time to answer all of my questions. He reiterated and explained to me my loan information and warranty. And he gave me a quick demo of every single button in the car. I feel a bit absurd now for condemning car salesman all these years. But thanks to Mr. Anthony, I was able to enjoy this purchase and make choices rooted in faith, not fear. I may be a mere librarian, but Mr. Anthony definitely went above and beyond to make me feel like a true VIP customer. read more

Buyers be aware!!!!! Be very cautious when buying a used car off there lot . I needed a car fast as I have 3 small children .One in a wheel chair from long battle with brain Cancer. I told them I needed a reliable car to get my children around and to get my son to Hartford for his regular MRI scans. I had the 35 days and the "engine blew " . But before that ... I questions the tire pressure sensor and the rear brakes .was assured the brakes were fine . They most definitely were not and needed to be replaced . The oil was filthy in the car . This dealership is blaming me for blowing the engine . Ummm NO they took advantage of a single mother with 3 kids . 8,000 was alot for a used car that is useless. Thanks alot! really un- professional service there . Also when I picked up my car . It wasnt detailed . Spend hours cleaning the interior. Oh they were nice enough to try to get me to pay 4,100 bucks for a new engine to get put in . I'd never let them touch my car at this point ! DONT PURCHASE FROM THEM . The worst Car dealer ever I wont recommend this place at all first of all we went there looking for a 2008 Mini Cooper what we saw it online i spoke to a sales person over the phone and the guy gave me a price of $3800 and i asked him are you sure because I'm gonna go and pay off everything and he told me yes it's the price for sure then when i get there they gave me another price like $400 more then what we spoke and that moment i didn't have more cash on me si so I ended up paying with my debit card that extra money and then they did not give us the car he said ohh we have to make the car nice for u guys and get the license plates and the emission test done and i was like ok whatever so one week passed we went to get the car and they gave us the car so gross and dirty which cost me another $150 to get the car on a decent shape then they didn't did the emission test we took the car for it and the car didn't passed but we can't keep coming back and forth because we live like 3 hours away from them i spoke to someone again and he said yes we have the emission we will mail it to you Yeah right just bullshit and lies like from The beginning ok then when i was driving the car back home the check engine light shows up on the dash i called them again and nothing no answers all They said was "bring the car and we can take a look at it"really? This dealership is the worst experience I've ever had with any dealership. Put $500 on a car to hold it for me just for them to BS me. I had to keep calling them to find out what was going on with the car. Something that was supposed to take 1 1/2 weeks turned into 3 weeks. Not once did they keep me posted. I finally called them and told them to refund my $500 which was supposed to take a week to get back. When I went to look at the car it had more body damage than the pictures showed and a problem with the power steering. They assured me the power steering problems would be fixed. I came back a week later to drive again and purchase. The power steering was better, everything appeared good. I purchased the car and 45 minutes into driving home the car broke down making banging noises, overheating and losing power. I wasn't able to drive more than 30 mph. And he car stalled out. I made them aware right away but they only offered to look at it for me. I got the car towed to my mechanic and he informed me the car needed a new engine. Everything visible under the hood "looked" ok but pulling the engine out he saw a complete hack job of an engine rebuild. I was not made aware that the engine had been broken down and rebuilt when I purchased the car and the problems and damages weren't something you could see without pulling the engine out of the car. I made them aware of the significant problems and they only offered a discounted rate for labor. The care only worked for 45 minutes and I was only offered a "discounted rate" rate on labor. I absolutely refused to have the same mechanics who did a hack job rebuilding the engine in the first place install a new engine. I had to spend over $3000 to get the running. The paperwork wasn't filled out properly either so when I went to register the car the dealership needed to fax their license to the DMV. They "couldn't find their license" and I spent hours at the DMV and had to research online to find the dealerships license number myself. They sold me a complete lemon that they covered up to get the car sold, and because it's sold as is and is more than 6 years old the state of CT has no laws to protect me. Don't even waste your time LOOKING at a car at this place because I promise you they will not take care of you after you buy it. They get their money and that is ALL they care about. I bought a car from this place and they told me "If it does not pass inspection WE WILL FIX IT".... That was a lie. My car did not pass inspection so they had me bring the car back so they could "fix it". All they did was clear the code causing the check engine light. The drive is an hour and a half from my town and by the time I got home the engine light was back on, leaving me unable to pass inspection AGAIN. I brought the car back to them and was told there was nothing they could do for me and they would not fix it. Now never mind the check engine light, I couldn't even drive the car because they sold me this car with tires so bald it isn't even SAFE to drive. This place does NOT care about the people sell to, they ONLY care about getting money for themselves! NEVER waste your time on this place JUST A SMALL UPDATE: got new tires for my car since the ones they sold on the car to me were too bald to even drive and went to get them put on. when i originally bought the car the tire pressure sensor light was on and they told me one of the sensors was broken.. i asked for the mechanic to fix the sensor that was broken and when i went to pick my car back up turns out one of the sensors WAS NOT BROKEN... My 17yr old son bought his 1st car @ Sphinx. He asked a lot of questions/did a lot of research prior to buying this car. He was constantly told "this car is in mint condition!" They also said they checked all fluids & went thru the entire car prior to my son buying it. IT HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE SINCE DRIVING IT OFF OF THE LOT!! The check engine light came on, the oil light came on & the car seemed to be riding slow. The guys @ the dealership told him to bring it back & they'd check it out for him. They told him it needed spark plugs, which they said they changed for him. We get it home again & the oil light continues to come on..we check the oil level..empty, but no oil leak. Another trip to the dealership & my son is told that they put it on the scan & "all it needs is a throttle." Brought it to my mechanic & was told that it would cost $1000's to repair this car. The mechanic literally called it a junk!! The dealership really took advantage of my son & thinks its ok, which is so frustrating! PLEASE BE VERY CAUTIOUS OF THIS PLACE!! read more
