    Spicy Crispy Chicken
    Ryan R.

Since moving to north Jersey, I've been on the hunt for tasty, authentic Szechuan style spicy crispy chicken also known as Chengdu, or Chongqing, style chicken. If you haven't had this style of chicken, you need to do yourself a favor and try it. Done properly it is unusually crispy, fairly spicy, and incredibly tasty. Seasoned with copious amounts of chili pepper, lots of ginger, and some classic Szechuan black peppercorn - this dish is a flavor bomb...when done properly. I've tried this dish at a handful of different locations in NYC and NJ and I can say Spice Spirit and Szechuan House in Hamilton serve the best versions of this dish. I'm truly happy to have found a restaurant in Jersey City that knocks this dish out of the park.

Red Alert- Amazing food over here! This place is the real deal when it comes to authentic Szechuan cuisine. The name of the restaurant is confusing as I've found 3 different variations of the name online/on the store front. I'm not actually sure what the name of the restaurant is but I took pictures of the storefront and interior. I had been ordering delivery from here all winter so when I finally decided to dine in, I completely missed it! On the outside, it looks like your standard no frills Chinese takeout restaurant. But this place is so much more glorious than that... They offer several different "styles" of dishes (salt and pepper style, cumin style, dry pepper style, etc.) along with your standard noodle dishes and Americanized Chinese food dishes. I've tried several items from their menu and have thoroughly enjoyed each of them. My top favorites would be dry pepper style spare rib tips, wonton in chili oil, and pork fried rice. There is only street parking but it is also close to the journal square path station.

Definitely our new go-to spot! We loved everything we ordered, especially the dumplings, general tso chicken, boneless spare ribs, and the cumin style lamb. All of the food was so tasty, well packaged, and still hot when it arrived. Well done!

What a surprise to have a restaurant like this open up in the Journal Square area. The take-out menu and the dine-in menu seem to be a bit different, with only Szechuan style dishes on the dine-in menu. The staff were very warm and welcoming and mentioned to us when we were leaving that special dishes were available with a day or two advance notice, especially involving seafood. I had the Dan Dan noodles (you can ask for the dish to be prepared to be suitable for vegetarians) and the dry pot shrimp with vegetables. The vegetables were fresh in the dish and the shrimp and spice flavors were great. In terms of spice, I found level 6 to be good for me. I can not wait to come back to try more of the menu. They also have very affordable family style tasting menus for parties of 7 or more.

Great addition to the Jersey City area. Though there are other Szechuan restaurants in the area I'm sure once everyone has tried this restaurant it'll sure be everyone's favorite. I stopped by tonight to get takeout but regrettably I only ordered the spicy beef noodle soup ($7.95). Once I opened the bag I smiled... I appreciate a restaurant that separates the noodles from the broth because you don't want your noodles super soft and over cooked. The spice was just right and the serving of braised beef is overly generous. The base is very beefy and not watered down and the amount of spice (chili oil) is not overpowering. Will definitely come back again.

For those of you who've had Han Dynasty in Manhattan or elsewhere, this place is a sister restaurant with the same menu / same chefs (just a different name). The food was excellent, the staff is very friendly--great addition to Journal Square/Jersey City. We had the dan dan noodles, fish dry pepper style, the shredded ginger duck, and egg drop soup. All were wonderful! Highly recommend this place--we will definitely be back!

I almost missed this place because the sign said Asian fusion instead of spice spirit on the sign! I really wanted to give Spice spirit 5 stars but there were a couple of issues that I can't ignore. First with the good. The food was really tasty, not too oily, and there were great authentic options. Also the space was clean and the service was really excellent! The few issues were they charged us an extra dollar for the tiny juicy buns (xlbs) and the water tasted soapy like they did not fully rinse their water cups. We just deducted the extra dollar from the tip, but make sure you're being charged the correct amount for your dishes. But overall I'd definitely eat here again. They're a welcome addition to journal square.

Ok so I have to say that the actual place is definitely not a great ambience however the food is where it's at. It literally was the best pork belly I've had, the hot pot was ok but not bad, I also had some wonton in chili oil that were super delicious. The price was very reasonable! Definitely come here for the food not the atmosphere lol...

Their soup dumplings are impeccable and I would say their egg custard with black truffle is the best I've ever tasted. They also have a tangerine pu'ar tea they serve with an ornate glass teapot and they rest it on a heater with a candle. Their peach gummy tremella dessert (sort of a health/beauty food served chilled or hot) was also quite good. Exceptional and very attentive service, and the interior is very stylish, well-decorated and chill. I had to make the stank face after trying the chili oil and accompanying flavors, it's like a soft tangy and spicy flavor that is incredible, definitely house made. The tea was a rose sweet green tea, tastes great- the teapot was heavy which I loved The citrus bloom drink was presented spectacularly, the glass and the dried yellow flower on top was a great addition. It tastes like citrus with only a hint of alcohol The mapo tofu is awesome, I had it without beef but it's soft and has that mouth numbing you get from Sichuan. It's probably the most tingling I've gotten, my whole mouth and lips Absolutely beautiful aesthetic, there is peaceful string music playing the whole time and the entire place is decorated stunningly The service was amazing, the server told me how they make the appetizer as well as poured the cup of tea for me, other than that you normally order on the iPad which makes things very easy. Fortunately, we discovered Yuan, located in the office area of Newport. We arrived shortly after 6pm on a Friday evening, effectively an early dinner for us and most. The bright side is that we were able to finish easily within an hour. I do enjoy their little booths. We sat in one and kinda felt private even if it wasn't. Just a nice little touch, we felt. To start, we ordered the Eggplant with Minced Pepper Sauce. This had a really nice kick to it. A pretty cool way to eat Eggplant. We enjoyed it. After that, we split Veggie Noodles & the Kung Pao Tofu. The noodles were great as I anticipated. The Kung Pao Tofu was cooked pretty well too. I was looking for something different from the Ma Po Tofu I'm used to eating as I'm getting a little sick of the after taste. This Kung Pao, like most others, has a combination of every flavor palette. Perhaps a little too much for me, but maybe if they could make a General Tso's Tofu, that'll bring me back to my memories of Chinese Takeout! Anyhow, this place is pretty good for dinner at a reasonable time. I highly recommend. My other half will be trying the non-vegetarian options in the future!
