Chong Qing chicken, cold noodles in peanut sauce
    Craig G.

I wanted to like Grand Sichuan more than I actually did. Jersey City luckily has no shortage of Szechuan restaurants, and 3 of them (Chengdu 1, Ling Long Xuan, Grand Sichuan) are within walking distance. Craving spicy noodles and spicy chicken on a brisk evening, I ordered cold noodles and Chong Qing chicken for takeout. Grand Sichuan nailed the flavours: the noodles were tasty, coated with a slightly spicy peanut sauce. The chicken melded spicy chili and numbing Szechuan peppercorn well, with the meat not too soggy. The preparation was a downer: the chicken had large chunks of garlic and ginger. That's not necessarily bad, since garlic and ginger are delicious, though it would've added more to the dish if minced finer. The dish itself was overwhelmingly chili. Not extremely spicy: the dish was mostly chili pepper, with a small portion of that delicious chicken scattered in. The food is good enough to give it another go, but I'll fill my Chong Qing fix at Chengdu 1 next time

Food (5/5): We ordered the sliced beef dry hot pot and the crab soup dumplings. The sliced beef dry hot pot had too chewy and fatty beef; a lot of parts that were hard to eat. The crab soup dumplings were OK but were too doughy. Also be aware that it's a pork dumpling with a bit of crab on top. Service (3/5): Server wasn't particularly friendly. Food took a while to come out at almost 15 minutes. This includes the soup dumplings too which I thought would come out fast but did not. They also did not check up on us or refill our water without us finding and asking them. Ambiance (3/5): It's a cozy Chinese restaurant that isn't particularly big but can seat 20 or so people. The place looks a bit outdated and could use a makeover. The bathroom was clean though and overall the dining area seemed mostly clean.

I haven't been to Grand Sichuan for years and got surprised that the flavor is much more tastier now. Maybe I got used eat spicy food. After the inflation, the portions and prices are still pretty good here. I've got the scallion lamb, boiled beef & intestine noddles. All of them are good but on a greasy side. I should have make some veggies to balance it out. Some tip here, you can use the leftover sauce from the boiled beef to make noodles & veggies.

Authentic Chinese place. Their ambience is super cute and cozy. Service was faster. Ordered Hot and sour soup and the veggie Steamed dumplings. Both of them tasted good especially the dumplings. What I did not like was there were too many veggie in the soup despite asking them to reduce while ordering. Except for that, everything else was good.

The place was fairly quiet for a Friday evening. The food is ok. It's fairly similar to some of the other options in the area.

Chong Qing Spicy Chicken (soggy skin, not fried well or seasoned well)

I am a big fan of Szechuan food and when I try a place for the first time, there are always 3 dishes that I order. These are wontons in spicy oil, cellophane noodles with minced pork, and Chongqing chicken. The wontons in spicy oil differ from place to place and I prefer the ones that are topped in the red spicy oil, Grand Sichuan's version is in more of a brown oil which I don't normally like as much, but theirs was very flavorful. They didn't have the cellophane noodle dish on the menu so I ordered what I thought was the closest thing - Chongqing noodles with minced pork, this was the winner, different from the dish I had in mind but very very delicious. It is unfortunately downhill from here.. I know that different places make Chongqing chicken a little differently, but never have I ever ordered it and received chicken that had bones. Each piece had tiny little bones and tiny bits of meat that were difficult to eat. The pieces were not well fried, resulting in soggy skin. It was also not very flavorful or spicy, though there was some sauce on the bottom of the container. In addition to these, I ordered chicken fried rice (just okay), soup dumplings (not bad but one had something crunchy inside which was off-putting), and bok choy which was not cooked well and was sitting in a lot of liquid and had become soggy. The scallion pancakes were good. My order qualified me for a free appetizer and I assumed that they'd make one of the 3 appetizers that I ordered free or maybe give me an option, but I was given a sliced pork belly dish. It was actually pretty good, but not something I would've ordered if given the option.

Found a cigarette butt in my hot and sour soup from delivery tonight. Restaurant told me it was probably a white pepper but it smells like tobacco and was pretty clearly foam wrapped in white paper from a cigarette. I do think the food here is very tasty so I'm disappointed that i probably can't ever order from here again now that I've experienced this.

I've been here five times now. 4/5 times the food was great! I always took a takeout. I tried Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp with garlic sauce. Food is prepared fresh. Dishes are flavorful. Great portion size for the price. 1/5 times the food was super salty. Ambiance is quite. It's a small place. Good hangout spot for close friends and couples. I'll continue to go here to try out new dishes.

Meh. It's not bad, but not amazing. Better takeout options in the area exist. We just got broccoli with garlic sauce and sesame chicken as a last minute Friday night meal and I thought both were okay. The sesame chicken flavor was good but the pieces of chicken were huge and not too crispy though we requested it to be.

I was staying in Jersey City a couple weeks ago, and on a Sunday afternoon after not eating all day, I was really hungry and wanted a good Chinese spot to try. A quick Google search revealed this spot only about a block away from the hotel where me and my gf were staying, so I decided to give it a try. It's a small spot with maybe 7 or 8 tables. When we went in there were only a handful of other customers inside, but we were ordering to-go anyway. After perusing the menu for a few minutes, I decided to and letting my hungry, hungry stomach dictate things for me, I ordered enough for two or three people. I got a large chicken and broccoli, the chong qing small noodles with minced pork and beans and pork soup dumplings (and after the cashier already rang me up, my stomach added scallion pancakes to the order). By the time we got back to the hotel room the food was still mostly hot. I dug right in. The chicken and broccoli was pretty good, about typical of what you'd expect from a takeout place. You can't really go wrong with c&b (well you can, but it's hard to). Admittedly, I thought the chong qing noodles came in a broth. They did not. This dish was my least favorite out of what I ordered. I wasn't a fan of the beans in the dish, and overall I just didn't like the taste of it. But I'll give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt on this one and say it's probably just not a dish I like, and not an issue with how the restaurant made it. The soup dumplings weren't the best I've had, but they were pretty good. They were pretty tasty and had a good amount of soup in each one. The scallion pancakes were my favorite thing. They were just the right thickness, nice and crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. They weren't too salty or greasy either. I'm really big on scallion pancakes, I order them almost every time I go to dine in at Chinese restaurants, and these ones certainly did not disappoint. This place is definitely a little pricey. I understand it's located in downtown Jersey City, but $16 for chicken and broccoli is more what I expect to pay at a Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. Overall is was a decent meal for a man that was quite hungry, but I'd probably look for something else next time. Tl;dr: overall decent food, but pricey. It's conveniently located in downtown JC, if you're looking for something close by and quick. Definitely worth trying the scallion pancakes though.

Love getting takeout from this local sichuan joint. They are pretty fast and food always comes out tasting decent. I recommend the hunan chicken.

Worms I found in my food
    Shanshan L.

I found a worm in my food. I told the waitress, the waitress was nice. She brought my food back to the kitchen, asked the chef to make a fresh one. However, after I almost finished the food, I found another worm in the food. So, totally two worms. I told the waitress, the owner decided to have me 20% off, which is around $2. The reason I left this comment is that I hope they clean the vegetables carefully.

Mapo tofu, beef and potato, whole fish in chill oil are all elite here. One of the best Sichuan spots I've been to.

The ambiance is not that great even though there's a big space and there was a lot of junk sitting around the place like extra stock of drinks and boxes all over the place. I don't think people really eat-in here. When I did takeout, it was still not worth the price of other similar restaurants in the area. Also this place doesn't have combinations sold together -- you have to buy rice on the side for EVERY dish which is not a traditional way to serve each dish in general. The prices here are not worth trying it - way overpriced and overcharged! Should be more affordable since we do not get the rice with the combination plates.
