Representing runner-up to an out of town location, O is for Oohh's & Aahh's representing 2020. I visited on Sunday, May 31, 2020. At that time, I was upset about what happened with George Floyd a week earlier; still in 2026, it was wrong what happened to Floyd (not to mention more recent news that happened in that city was horrible too). I hung out with a friend on that warm day having a beer outside his apartment in Takoma Park. He is a mega-leftist politically (I'm more independent), but said he wanted to support a black-owned business; I said that's a good idea; I might do that for dinner. He was doing his own thing for dinner, so I was on my own. So, I looked up on Yelp what was in the area, and I saw just across the border in DC, Oohh's & Aahh's. Staff was nice, and I got a fried chicken platter. As this was Covid times, there was no dine-in. So, I schlepped all the way straight up Georgia Ave 6 miles back to my home in Wheaton fairly quickly on that Sunday as I don't like my food getting cold. I think my food stayed pretty hot as it was well-wrapped, and if it had cooled off, I could always microwave at home. The fried chicken, mac n' cheese (my favorite vegetable...I know not really a veggie but a joke), etc. were all solid. If I was ever over here, I'd consider coming back; just so rare I go to DC these days. read more

When I first came to this place years ago, they didn't have their liquor license yet but we (parents and I) ate in and the food was good. I went just the other day and the food was hit and miss. The sides were good. All of the meats were meh except for the catfish. The catfish was good. We also had ribs, wings and leg quarter and turkey wings. All of it was just ok. The fam was disappointed and asked why we didn't go tot he U st location because hasn't missed yet but we were in the area and my last experience there was good so I thought I'd treat the family. We did have it to-go so it could be that the containers they put the food in created an atmosphere that wasn't the best for their food but when we got home, we sampled everything and that was the outcome. The color and lighting of the place I like a lot. There isn't much they can do about this and there are a lot of place in DC configured this way but I can't stand having my back to a window. I should have written about Oohhs & Aahhs earlier when I would slap my momma for some of their turkey wings. I loved them. But I am writing to let them know today, the quality of the food has gone down. I know they have expanded significantly and opened new restaurants in new areas, but i hope they are not expanding so fast that they are letting quality assurance go. I almost ordered the turkey wings yesterday, but i wanted something different so I tried the whiting. I usually dont order it because it tends to be salty. I figured I'd try it again to see whether it had changed. It was soooo salty it didnt feel healthy to eat it. It was like a heart attack waiting to happen. It's normally salty but it was a lot saltier than normal. I'm writing as a friend who used to love your food. Slow down. Stop opening new spots every year until you know the restaurants you have are managed well. Quality control and consistency is key. It can make or break your brand. Also the cake is good but overpriced at almost $8 a slice. Recommend you change that also. I wish you the best!! read more

Stopped here around DC because of the "everything on the menu" tv show and their hype of the turkey wings. The hype was real. From perfectly seasoned plastic fork tender turkey wings to the buttered cabbage...it was a super memorable bite. Staff was friendly. Mac was solid. We walked in about an hour before close and were quickly greeted by staff and told to sit wherever we chose. Our server was knowledgeable about every dish and offered suggestions. I ordered the catfish nuggets and crispy Brussels sprouts off the all day happy hour menu and was pleasantly surprised. My food was delicious!!! As a Louisiana girl it's hard to trust catfish when away from home but it's been weeks and I can't stop thinking about it. I ate alllll of my food. No need for a to go box. It's shameful that I've lived in the DC area all my life and this was my first time coming to Ooh's and Aahh's. And I love soul food! Glad I definitely gave it a chance because I loved everything I ordered. The music is pretty loud, which I don't love, but we were at least able to hear each other without having to yell. I ordered the catfish and grits, which were so good. The mac n cheese is very cheesy, and the yellow rice and collards were a bit on the drier side, but they were good for the most part. My friend and I sat in the upstairs dining area and received good service from our waiter. We had a good overall experience and I will definitely visit again. read more

We made a reservation for 10 and it became 12 and they made it work and happen!!! I thought it would be an issue getting the food out but it worked...service was ok...it was a lot and they forgot a few things and it was just ok. I was worried as I made this reservation and it was far from where we were staying near the convention center...but it was worth traveling for according to my friends that came with. The only thing that was kind of strange to me was that the food came in plastic to go containers...even if you ate in the restaurant. I ordered a fish dinner since I was preparing to go out of town didn't have time to cook. I had quite a bit of a wait but didn't mind because the food is usually good. Once I finally received my order and brought it home. The fish dinner was cooked so hard it was dry and hard to eat; I had to throw it away. They might consider adding an option on these eating apps to choose alternative in case they run out! This was our first time at this location.. it is fairly new hasn't been here too long to my understanding, but it was definitely a pleasant ride and vibe for a special occasion on a lovely Sunday. Now I can do brunch at any time of the day ..it can be breakfast lunch for dinner breakfast is a go to for me. Whatever you chose there is a nrunch item available with dinner options as well. I was attempting to upload the video of the inside of the establishment.. it is small but does have some tables and wall seating if you would like to bring your crew with you to eat.. it is first come first serve seating and it's not a lot but the area is spacious enough for bar seating as well. there is a restroom located downstairs and upstairs. A first for me Is they do serve your meal already in a plastic carryout tray, which could be a good thing. It was also nicely portioned. The service was amazing!! Our host/waiter was Q and he was absolutely a gem!! He was very personable had a sense of humor and very pleasant personality. And amazing hair!! Now for this soulful food!! I ordered the catfish and grits. I really like that you can choose how you would like it cooked, so I chose grilled catfish. My partner had the short rib meal with Mac and cheese and greens and then I had a lovely Belgian waffle on the side. Everything was full of flavor not overpowered by any salt or seasoning... made just right! The meat was falling off of the bone and the Mac and cheese was absolutely melt in your mouth good. Great vibes from beginning to end! The music was fantastic and created a wonderful dining atmosphere. The restaurant has a very casual feel, and you have the option to order to-go instead of dining in, which is convenient. Located on a busy street with a Walmart a few doors down, parking is available in the back. However, street parking isn't visible, and the police department is out there heavily issuing warnings and tickets, so be cautious. The food was great! We had the catfish with a few sides, and everything was fresh and delicious. The only downside was the dishware. Everything was plastic, including the container we were served in, which gave the impression that this is more of a take-away restaurant than a dine-in spot. The type of plastic containers used burn easily and aren't suitable for reheating. Although our server was nice and doubled my container, it didn't make much difference. They should consider investing in durable and eco-friendly disposable containers to improve the dining experience. Overall, a great spot with delicious food and a lively atmosphere! read more

The food was pretty good. The catfish was some of the best I've ever had. The seasoning was perfect and it came out piping hot! The Mac & Cheese was very cheesy and delicious. The greens weren't so good. The greens had sugar in them and tasted very sweet which was unusual. The corn bread literally tasted like yellow cake instead of corn bread.. I wouldn't recommend getting the cakes they sell. They are dried out because they are in a very cold refrigerator all day. The service was great. Our waiter was very nice and friendly. I was recommended to come here by my stylist since my hair appointment went past happy hour and this location has late happy hour special until 10:00pm on weekdays, and until midnight on weekends. I arrived around 8:45pm. The inside is okay. They have two levels of seating. Since this was on a Tuesday I decided to order from the taco Tuesday menu. I had a catfished taco and a shrimp taco. I also ordered a side a collard greens. The menu gives you great options. The customer service overall is what made the experience not so good. I also never ordered my food to go but my food was given to me in to go boxes which I thought was inappropriate since I was dinning in, so the pictures look crazy. I did not feel welcomed at all and the person working behind the bar behaved as if they didn't want to be working there and was slightly unprofessional. I had bbq short ribs with cabbage, Mac and cheese, and a side of cornbread yum. Although we ate in the restaurant the server brought our food in to-go containers , then served food to the folks at the table behind us of plates‍. The ordering process was a standard experience for takeout although I would have liked the host to be a little more attentive to customers needing to place orders so that wait in line to order doesn't become unmanageable. FOOD: The food was OK. Considering this is soul food I was expecting more flavor and attention to detail: more flavor in potato salad, more flavor in sweet potatoes (which seemed to be boiled and waterlogged), and fresher and more flavorful turkey wings (and a better cook on the peppers and onions it came with). The guy helping at the register was very friendly and gave us a warm welcome. We ordered the fried shrimp and got Mac and cheese and yellow rice and gravy for the sides. I also tried the lemon pepper and buffalo sauces with the juicy shrimp. The lemon pepper sauce was my favorite. I've eaten from the U Street Oohh's and Aahh's location many times and the food has always been delicious. During a recent visit to DC, I decided to try ordering delivery from the Georgia Ave location. I ordered the shrimp and grits, collard greens, yams, Mac and cheese, sweet potato cake and chocolate cake for my friend and I. The delivery logistics was horrible. I had to order the delivery through a third party, Toast, which didn't provide a tracking mechanism of where the food was. I had to call Oohh's and Aahh's three times to try and figure out what happened to my order. At first, I was told Uber Eats picked it up and told it was Door Dash in the second call. On the third call, I was told to report it as stolen from the delivery driver. About 5-10 minutes after that, I received a call back from Oohh's and Aahh's stating that they confirmed with Door Dash that the driver was delivering the food. I checked outside and it was delivered to the unit above (not there previously). It took over an hour to sort all of this out which is why a star was taken off. The food itself was amazing! The greens were a little salty but everything else was fantastic. Next time, I will just be doing a pick up order or eating in. read more

Road trips and Pit Stops! On my way to Virginia we stopped in DC for Dinner. This was much needed and some of the best food and service the whole trip. We walked in and were seated. It was not packed on a Thursday night. We ordered the new meat special. I ordered fried and shrimp with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. We came here to support a local business with good reviews upon recommendation from a local realtor. Upon entering we were greeted in less than a warm way and joined the party we were meeting. The volume of the music, for us, made it difficult for us to talk with one another. When we asked the manager if the volume could (he asked me three times to repeat myself) be turned down, he said, "This is our environment but we will see what we can do." When we asked to sit at a table further from the speaker, the server said ,"Y'all can't sit there it's reserved for a larger party". We are a party of four, the largest party in the restaurant. We waited another ten minutes for someone to take our drink order. We ordered off the brunch menu. Twenty minutes later our food orders came out wrong. The manager said they could not fix the order because brunch was over. Someone else got cheese in their eggs though they did not order cheese. The person that did order cheese did not get it. The manager responded by insisting the orders were right. If you enjoy loud 90s R&B music and a restaurant whose attitude about customer service is indifferent than this is the place for you. While the manager did eventually replace the meal, I do not want to eat in a restaurant that disputes customer's concerns. read more

This place is sliding downward a bit from my viewpoint. We were seated at a table that wasn't cleaned, so we asked the server to help with that. The appetizer was brought to the table after the entrees. The collard greens were barely warm and tasted too sweet. The fish was fried very lightly. The prices are inconsistent because I've been there 3 times and the price of some items are different each time e.g., cornbread. The to go order fish add more batter and was fried harder again - inconsistent. There were no condiments or utensils in the to go order. The restaurant and the bathroom floor were both sticky. The catfish dinner is spot-on. I love the collard greens which accompany; they're fresh with a deft touch of vinegar. The potato salad is traditional, something my mom would make and yummy. I didn't find the preparation of whiting fish as top notch. The fountain drinks are generous in size. The strawberry lemonade is balanced, just what I like. Oohs and Aahs Soul Food Restaurant on Georgia Ave. We arrived just before the restaurant opened, the staff greeted us with smiles, soft neosoul music playing. the place appears recently renovated, with windows opening to the street and a back room available. Concerning the food. My wife ordered fried catfish, cabbage and macaroni and cheese. The catfish filets were seasoned and fried perfectly. The cabbage was well seasoned and the first forkful of baked macaroni and cheese told me all I needed to know as it pulled away with several strings of cheese that showed how dense and cheesy it was. My wife said her entire meal was well prepared and presented. She added after eating such good filling food she needed a nap. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles. The server offered chicken breast, thighs or wings. I selected the chicken breast. When my meal arrived I loved the dusting of powdered sugar and when I cut into the waffle it seemed to be flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg, which paired wonderfully with with the sweetness of the syrup, against the savory flavors of the fried chicken. What do you call it when you do the same thing expecting different results? Oh yeah...insanity! I've had Oohh's & Aahh'a before yet I somehow thought things would be different this time because it's been a minute since my last visit. I had the catfish with yams, macaroni and cheese and a side of potato salad. I even added on a piece of the strawberry cake to satisfy my sweet tooth. Here's what I thought about each item. Catfish: The seasoning is too salty just like I remembered but the dinner comes with 2 pieces unlike other places where you only get 1. Yams: I didn't care for them and tasted like pie filling like I saw on another review. Macaroni and cheese: I also didn't care for it and was flavorless. The cheese was not melted and gooey like a good Mac and cheese always is. Potato salad: Decent enough but not the best by far. The large chunks of potatoes were inconsistent in size which is a personal pet peeve for potato salad for me. Strawberry cake: Dense and had an odd texture. I didn't like the taste of the cake or the frosting. What a waste! Overall, it's all way too expensive for sub par and mediocre food. I won't make the same mistake again. read more
