Just had an unsavory experience at this dog wash. I brought my 2 daughters, one adult aged who has been to the wash with our dog previously and my 6 y/o. The wash itself was fine- had all the needed items. Nothing special. Owner asked us to prepay, we did and began washing. Both of my kids washed our dog, we had fun. laughed... all good fun. We get ready to leave and she yells at my daughter to pay for the dog toy she had shown us from the counter. The toy lit up so she accused her of wasting the battery. "I paid for that and she used it!" She yelled! I asked my daughters to leave so I could pay the lady for the toy and they wouldn't hear her yelling. We didn't need it but I am not the type of customer to use things w/o paying. She refused to take my money- told me to leave and never return and said " PEOPLE LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO RAISE CHILDREN!" I was blown away. This business's new name is DIY Pet wash formally, Spike and Chester's located at 9725 Thornydale Suite #139. I typically go to Rosie's Barkét also a DIY dog wash that I am exceedingly happy with but today I drove out of my way because Rosie's is closed on Wednesday. When I walked in there were no customers, only a counter person. She immediately was not friendly or welcoming and had me sign a disclosure without even greeting me or telling me anything about the business. The waiver was a general waiver regarding the tubs and care. I politely asked the staff member if she could help me a bit getting my dog up the ramp, he is 80lbs eleven and arthritic. I only needed her to hold the lead as I lined him up on the ramp, lifted his front feet and pushed his bottom up. She said No, I can't help you. I'm not aloud to touch dogs or kids. That was a very awkward response. Every other DIY pet wash (multiple states, over 11 years) assists me if I need and ask. Once again, she said she can't help and stood behind me as I struggled to lead my big dog up a very small, narrow inclined ramp. I tried and tried but could not lead him, as I her lifted his legs at the same time. She stood by and watched me with not enough hands, I had to finally give up!! I was now frustrated beyond words with the situation of going to a new business, not being greeted and curtly told no I can't help with your dog (or children??) while she stared at me struggling. Needless to say, I left and told her I would not be coming back. She immediately picked up my waiver and dramatically ripped it up onto many pieces in front of me, maybe to make a point? Then she said that's ok as she gave me a condescending smile. This location is actually close to me and I would have been a loyal customer even though it is no frills if the customer service was anywhere near appropriate. I will also say on a side note, the ramps are narrow, short and have a steep incline and if you have a large dog it could be a little more tricky. This piece of my review is only an observation separate from the poor service I received. read more

I should've posted this years ago. I was unsure of how to respond to this but I've decided to post my experience. I took my young dog there and had him groomed and when I came back he was in a crate that was covered up and the owner said it was because he was loud. I have never had a problem with him barking in the past so I thought it was weird. He was a little matted when I took him in so she shaved him down. Now three years later his hair never grew back he has horrible rashes an eczema and absolutely no hair on his body because of his breed type as she shaved it all off. She also was extremely rude to me and that I need to train my dog to behave better but did not take into account that she had also shaved off his nipples which is why he was acting up in the tub and barking in pain. I wouldn't recommend going here unless you have a specific cut in mind because for me it ruined my dogs entire life and his coat forever ... even after 3 years and monthly spa treatments for the Eczema and dry skin read more

Went in on a quiet Tuesday and was shown where everything was. The owner was very helpful and patient with me, as well as gave me a few tips and offered an additional upcharge for deshedding conditioner. Which I gladly took, and was thankful for, as I had brought my husky in. I was also given an extra towel off the bat, to help dry his feet while I dried the rest of him. I haven't done anything full service, it was all self service today, but it was nice and quiet and really enjoyed how easy it was to get in and get out. read more

I'm soooo mad and angry! We have been traveling in our RV for the past two months and the pups really needed groomed so we took them to Spike & Chester's for full service grooming, when I picked them up one pup has razor burns or bruises on her stomach! I asked the groomer what happened and she said "I really didn't trim her there". REALLY it didn't just magically happen! I could have lived with the ugly runway haircuts but not the burns! When I took the pups in I told the groomer/OWNER that the one pup had been abused and we are very gentle with her! I'm so damn sad because I promised my dog when we rescued her that I would never let anyone ever hurt her again! Sham on this groomer, you should NOT be touching other peoples pets! Since I don't live in Tucson I guess I don't have to worry about ever coming back to this place! read more

After my first review from 2011, the owner under the yelp name "Dia V" sent me a private message a year ago on yelp and I just noticed it...she was clearly upset about my first honest review. Here is what this little gem wrote me...."You cannot assume you will have an appointment right away. It's a business. Do you seriously expect to have the 10am at the doctors the day YOU want it? (if you said yes im sorry youre that self center)" Check out that customer service, dare I say it may have improved since 2011? You are 2 for 2 Dia. I'll await your next message. For the record a business owner calling a customer self centered is hilarious. I REALLY suggest taking some classes on customer service and maybe using these reviews to improve your business skills. Dia is amazing, however the owner seems out out when customers come in the store. I went in today, and checked to be sure the lobby was clear. The owner told me to have a seat and wait for an open tub, but immediately scolded me when my dog met another dog that was exiting his bath. We used the self wash for the first time. For $16+ as their STARTING price, there was nothing different that you can't do at home. You have 2, "watered down" (Yes, they tell you they're watered down too, to the consistency of water) shampoos to choose from, tearless or medicated and 1 watered down conditioner, also to the consistency of water. There's a jar of homemade ear wipes and various brushes. After washing our dog I was rinsing out the sink to find hair not from my dog, washing out from underneath the rubber mat. The attendant noticed me washing out the tub and said, "Oh don't worry about that, you don't have to clean it, I disinfect everything after..." I thought, hmmmm, that's interesting considering there's obviously still hair in the sink from before me.   They do sell some holistic food and product, if you can fight your way through the dust and hair covering them. I get it, it's a dog hair haven. Nonetheless you should be even more diligent to keep your products clean and hair free. Almost $30 later for a do it yourself with watered down product and 1-$8.00 4oz. bottle of "dog cologne", also covered in hair, we won't be back.  The people were very nice but it's way over priced watered down self service. It might be for some people but it's definitely not for me. read more

Well I can't say that my girl Faith loved this place so much, but I absolutely LOVE it!! Being that it's winter and we live in a small place, it's quite difficult to give my girl a bath. The hose water outside is way too cold and I prefer not to completely rip my bathroom apart with dog hair, puddles, etc., so I tried Paws & Claws for the first time after years of driving by. Keep in mind this review is for the Do-it-Yourself portion of the place: After signing a release form, the gal led me back to the sink and grooming station where she proceeded to teach me what everything was for and what I had the ability to do with the tools I was given!!! I felt like a groomer all of the sudden. This little station was BOMB!! I had a stainless steel station with the hand held spout, shampoo, conditioner, brushes of all kinds, blowing station, etc. Kind of what you see what you walk up to the window at the big box places. I felt like a...professional groomer. Needless to say I was brought back to reality when Faith decided to release her anger on me and shake her water all over me! Didn't matter!...I wasn't at home and I didn't have to clean up...part of the benefits!! All this being said, I did think the price was a bit high. $16 for using the do-it-yourself station. It's water and shampoo for goodness sake, doesn't cost that much. But I get it. Have to pay the bills somehow. As for the amenities I didn't use; they have a groomer if you choose to go that route, and they also have dog foot and treats if that is what you're looking for, one brand being "Taste of the Wild" which is what I use. Taking it all into consideration I'll rate it a 4, but if I were to rate on price I would go with a 3. I won't take Faith back in the summer time when the water is warm, but a couple of times in the winter will do her some good!! read more

My dogs love this place. Snow knows where the bath place is even when we aren't going there. If we're on Ina she's getting excited to go have a spa day. Laura and the folks here are super nice. We've been taking our dog (now dogs) here for a couple years. Things are always in place and ready to go. I never have to go ask for supplies or extra towels and the employees are great at keeping the place spic and span despite dogs like mine who can cover the place in hair in two seconds flat! They also carry a great line of treats, foods, and holistic supplies. My dogs especially love the Elk Jerky by the register and I'm never allowed to get out the door without some as a treat. Without a doubt this is one of the best places to take your dog for a bath, brush and/or cut. Whether you want to do it all yourself or have them do it for you, it'll be a treat for your pup and you! read more

Spike and Chesters is clean and thankfully, doesn't have the overwhelming smell of wet dog as others do. The owner was at the desk and she was welcoming and very helpful. I like the way the tubs are set up. They are each private rather than the dogs seeing each other while they are bathed. I think that helps to reduce dogs' stress. Everything you need is easily reachable which helps the process along more quickly. And the staff does ALL of the clean up -- the owner told me not to do any which is such a gift!We will definitely be back until it's warm enough to bathe my girl in our yard. Do NOT bring your dog anywhere near this place. As a groomer myself, I rented a space in the back of the store for a period of time. During this time, I watched the owner and her receptionist Dia butcher the ears of two dogs. The owner, who is a second-rate groomer by the way, cut a dog's ear and blamed the dog! She then screamed in the dog's face and physically abused the dog. Dia took an electric clipper to a dog and butchered that dog's ear and she is not a groomer and has no experience grooming dogs. The place should be shut down. The back room was constantly filthy, the shampoos and conditioners are mostly water. They brewed and kept the coffee in the bathroom where they would go in and use the toilet. In a rage, the owner turned a hose on me and claimed it was an accident. I had to call the police on her. Don't bring your dog anywhere near this place, even if you are washing it yourself. read more

Love coming here with my two toy poodles. They have good quality products and a nice variety of shampoos to account for different needs. Everything is prepped for you and easy to use. I have been able to quickly check in and get started with little to no wait. The nicest thing is that I don't have to worry about clean up. I like that I can come here and clip my dog's hair without worrying about the mess if I were to groom them at home. The staff have been really kind and super helpful. My boyfriend and I took our two dogs here approx. 3 times with good results and usually the same women cut their nails. About 3 weeks ago my boyfriend took our dogs and while he is bathing one the other is getting her nails trimmed he walks over and saw our sweet puppy muzzled and bleeding while this new person was trimming her nails tooooo short. Meanwhile the women who usually cuts their nails was by her watching and never stopped her. Our dog has never needed a muzzle and if this new person didn't know how to trim nails to avoid the quicks she should have received more training. We have not been back since and have no plans on going back. Please train your people, it was horrible having our puppy bleeding everywhere for several hours afterward. We had to use cornstarch to stop the bleeding. read more

I take my dog there to get her nails clipped and they have always been very good to her. I have used their DIY bathing service a few times and found that to be extremely helpful. They use good products and the staff is very helpful. I will continue to go back and will always recommend them to anybody looking for grooming help. read more

Spike and Chesters is the worst establishment I've EVER BEEN TO! I made an appointment to have my little 4lb pomeranian, Bear get his summer lions cut to keep him cool for the hot summer months. I arrived at Spike and Chester's, filled out their paperwork and handed Bear to the groomer lady (Kathy?). Told her while she started I was just going to hang around since it was the first time using their services. Bear was visibly nervous and I just wanted to make sure my baby was going to be okay as she started. She told me "I had to leave before she would even start. That the dog would act up if he knew I was there". So I left and sat out front in my car with no argument, against my better judgment. Looking at Yelps reviews on this place I read a disturbing review about a dog who was burned while being groomed here. Concerned I walked back in to ask the girl at the counter if my dog was "going to be okay?" She assured me that my dog was in " good hands" and not to be concerned. So I left. No more than 10 minutes goes by and the place called me to come back to the shop. When I walk through the door I see bear bathed and dried. He was not shaved at all like I had requested his ears were not cleaned, and his nails were not clipped. Very confused I asked her what was going on, if there was a problem. She goes on to tell me that my little dog was uncontrollable and just too unruly for her to groom, at this point I'm very confused and irritated. I explained to her I've had Bear groomed at a bunch of groomers with no insadent. The groomer began to scream in my face, that I needed to "get out of her shop and to take my dog with me" that she is experienced and has been grooming for over 20 years and she "WAS NOT GOING TO FINISH GROOMING MY DOG!" She persisted to walk into me while screaming in my face until I was out of the shop, shut and locked the door. I was appalled and felt somewhat violated I will never come to this is establishment ever again and I would never tell my worst enemy to go to this place either. Just across the street is the best groomer in town, Teddy's Dog House, I took Bear their the very next day they groomed him with no incidents or problem and told me I had the sweetest dog in the world. I wrote a review for Teddy's dog house with pictures of the grooming that Bear had done. A business that refuses service to someone for no apparent reason, is not a good business. Thanks for reading. I recently moved here from colorado and this was my first dog wash here in Tucson. Let me tell you about the place in colorado, free dog treats, friendly staff, multiple options of shampoo (like 5-6), an open atmosphere, drying tables for large dogs, nail trimming stations. This place had none of that. Mostly it was the curt service. The lady at the front wasn't very friendly and I felt sheepish about waging my dog there.
