I'm a huge fan of Spike's! My husband and I have been coming here for 15 years now, and even stop in on our way downstate from visiting anywhere we end up in the north :) They are famous for their burgers, and they are yummy. The chicken wrap is delish too. Deep fried mac wedges... yum! The place really packs them in and I understand why. True, the bathrooms are small, but that add to the fun of it. Yeah, I know - a 5 star review for bar food?! Sure, it's a little bar with a basic bar food menu, but it does what it does perfectly. The best burgers in the north ("Spike Burger"), BLT's, deep fried soft pretzels... a decent selection of beers, craft and corporate. All this and a staff that operates like a fine oiled machine. During a recent trip "up north" we tried to get a late breakfast "downtown" Grayling ("1950's diner" looking joint). We waited 1/2 hour for our food, and when we saw 4 tables that came in after we ORDERED receive their food we paid for our drinks and walked out. We decided to try Spike's for lunch (it was nearing mid-day by this point). My hungry, bored kid and I were feeling rather defeated to see Spike's was PACKED. We managed to get a table right off the bat, and with people now lining up outside, we were served immediately. Wait staff were taking turns bringing our drinks/food, we never had to wait for a thing. They did not look frazzled by the crowd at all, they performed like a team who has been together for a long time, and GOT IT DONE with a cool efficiency and a smile. Great burgers! We stopped off of I75 on our way north and found it so much better than going to some fast food or chain style restaurant. Burgers are great and so was the burrito I had. Good servers too. We were seated behind a table where one woman had clearly been over served and couldn't keep her hyena-like laughs from hurting our ears. We calmly asked the server if we could be moved to a table in the far corner and she graciously moved us to a booth across the way. Draft beer selection is good. read more

I understand everyone is short staffed, I'm a server myself. But this was downright gross. My mom order the shrimp basket with fries and I had wing basket with waffle fries. We figured bar food, wouldn't be bad. The shrimp were burnt. Literally thumped on the table like a rock, and the fries were undercooked, cold and soggy. Same with the wing basket, overcooked wings and undercooked soggy cold fries. As far as the service, I get she was busy, but she also came up to our table and said "are you guys ready to order yet? I have a big table coming so...." Then dropped off our food (which as a server myself I would've never delivered) and never came back. In fact another server came around and checked on us more often then she did. And he, unfortunately, had to deal with the brunt of our disappointment while our original waitress ignored us because she knew she dropped off sub par food. Overall, not EXACTLY the servers fault, but still not happy. Won't be back. read more

Spike's is my favorite beer-and-burger stop when i'm traveling up North. not much else to say - great burgers, cold beer, local dive-bar atmosphere (but family-friendly). four stars because the service can be spotty, but not so much that i would complain - this is usually a very busy place. read more

Stopped in to Spike's for a quick lunch when I was in Grayling for business. Cool atmosphere, definite dive bar feel. I would have liked to have sat down and had 6 or 10 beers, but it was noon on a Tuesday so I went with a Spike burger. It was good. Not the best I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. I also had the deep fried pretzel app. That was really good! If I'm in Grayling again I'll definitely go back. I think I'd go back at dinner and have a few beers. read more

Stopped in tonight for a burger and the place was packed. Friendly bartender said the wait would be a few minutes. Sure enough, seats opened up and drinks were served. Ordered the spike burger and it was a delicious as I remembered. Place was packed with families. Great service. read more

the place has a cool sports bar look. The food was pretty okay, nothing especially good about it. The fries that came with the sandwiches and burgers were a little too greasy and a bit cold. Spike's Keg O' Nails! Very solid, and a bit to my surprise only because my girlfriend and I were both eating vegetarian that night, but this Spike's place served us up tasty vegetarian pub food. I had the black bean burger. Spike's also has the advantage of being the only place open that late in Grayling. read more

My boyfriend and I were in Grayling for a wedding a few weeks ago and, of course, I looked up some restaurants in the area for us to try. Spike's was first on the list and it did NOT disappoint. We went in pretty late on Friday night, I think around 10, so it was definitely more of a bar crowd but still really awesome people and really great service. We both got a burger and fries, mine sweet potato, and we had some fried pickles beforehand. Everything was so awesome. The burgers tasted incredibly fresh, I probably talked about them all weekend! I was also really impressed with the sweet potato fries and well, really everything we had. Granted, it is greasy food and you would think "just" a burger and fries, but I promise you will not be disappointed! The service was outstanding, our watiress was so great, and we got a seat immediately. Parking is right outside the building (which is awesome especially when it's cold). Loved the decor of the place, too, definitely felt like I was ready for my camping adventure in the North! All in all, awesome spot and definitely reccomend checking it out! read more

I've tried this place several times over the last couple weeks I've been in Grayling. A great burger truly worth it all. Often you'll stop off what seems to be a neighborhood pub and feel like you are rolling the dice, maybe it will be okay, maybe not. This place is a great small town bar and grill. Cool bar tender, live music at least once a week, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone passing through Grayling. read more

Bar food that is fairly good ...prices are good. Atmosphere is usually loud and the seating is somewhat uncomfortable and feels like the tables are crowded together. If you like to mix dinner with pool and video games and multiple TVs running, I guess this is your place. I prefer a quieter venue where conversation is possible. read more

This is simply a bar with food. Good selection of beers on tap and the menus looked okay. Just too many loud drunks with extremely bad language...at 8pm...and no one asked them to be quiet...they just continued to serve them. Would not bring my wife or kids. Decent burger, average "bar" food..absolutely horrible service. Sat around 25mins waiting for a drink. Two waitresses in the place, both hawking over a table of ten that came in long after us. They got their food before we even got our drinks. When the waitress finally came over we asked for our check and waited another 15 mind for that. Others talk about "atmosphere" all they want. A tiny, full (only seats about 50), loud bar doesn't make for bad service. read more

Spike's Keg O' Nails, the meeting place of the north, is the place to go for bar snacks, drinks and atmosphere if you truly want to immerse yourself in the "up-north" culture. Camo, waders and canoe marathon shirts galore. Try the Snake Nuts cocktail, can't find it anywhere else. read more

This bar, which has been around since the 30's and looks like a pretty fun place to hang out with friends -- lots of quirky memorabilia on the walls and in the rafters, including taxidermied grayling, the city's extirpated namesake; a busy clientele that spans all ages and socioeconomic groups-- disappointed us in the food department when we stopped in for lunch. We had cups of chili and turkey Reubens; the chili was pretty good Mom-style chili with a nip of jalapenos, but our sandwiches had the bitter off-taste of being toasted with old flattop grease. The filling was nothing special either. We did enjoy a dessert of what was billed as bananas Foster cheesecake bites, little deep-fried, graham-crackered nuggets of cheesecake tossed in a caramel sauce -- we didn't taste anything terribly boozy or bananalike, but they were still good. The beer choices were okay; a few Michigan brews but not as many as I would expect. Service was glacially slow...we were trying to get home, but wound up spending at least 15-20 minutes total waiting for our preoccupied server. Not a good first impression. read more

Hopped in today for lunch. The servers were on spot and friendly as always. This is a local treasure, folks. No chain, one of a kind place to get your comfort food on.
