This place is simply quintessential Up North. From the canoe in the rafters, to the pine walls, to the mounted paddles and fish, Spike's oozes northern charm. The restaurant is definitely older, but really clean and well kept. The Monday night we visited, it was packed! There were families, couples, soldiers from the nearby base and just some friends having a beer. We ordered a patty melt with added mushrooms, the fish sandwich with homemade tartar sauce, the sweet potato fries and seasoned waffle fries. The food came out hot and fast. It wasn't fancy, but it was awesome bar food! The portions are big! The best part of all was the friendly service! We felt welcomed walking in the door. There doesn't seem to be an unhappy staffer here. We will definitely be back - maybe on a Friday for the fish fry, or maybe this winter for another patty melt and a game of pool. read more

This place was always a 'must stop' for me and my family anytime we were traveling to Northern Michigan. Brought my grandkids there after kayaking the Au Sable and was terribly disappointed. Maybe covid and inflation are to blame for the smaller portions and higher prices but there is no excuse for the terrible treatment we received from a dimwitted bartender named Michael. The atmosphere is still the same but everything else makes this a place not worth visiting ever again. Better choices elsewhere. read more

This was my first time at Spike's. I came with my husband for the burgers which didn't disappoint. They were cooked perfectly. The onion rings with the boom boom sauce were good too. The ambiance is log cabin-esque and cozy, but not too cozy (COVID). All the staff wore masks, were really friendly and clearly worked together to keep things running smoothly. Alright, so we have gone back a couple of times since my review. The only suck thing is the tiny size of the drinks! THEY'RE REALLY SMALL!! Give me a nice big beer and you have a fan for LIFE! But, they don't... My beloved ordered a margarita last time we went and, seriously, it was made in a SHOT GLASS! And they charged full price for it! The time before was a tiny little drink for her too. Even mine- the beer- needs to be HUGE! Not a 20oz or whatever kinda waste of time glass it was. Charge more! Mary pat was awesome.... I enjoyed spending the day there with my wife, sister and brother in law watching the Michigan vs Ohio state game on 11/26/2016. Even though Michigan lost it was still a great time. The only complaint we have is the 4 item appetizer isn't worth $10, needs to be a little bigger for $10. Other then that it was a great place. This bar is trash. The waitresses are very rude, the food took a long time, and the drinks were watered down. The only redeeming quality was the fact that this bar is constantly blasting the Benny Benassi song "Satisfaction". Everyone inside seems to love the incredible bass line and brash lyrics that could only come from Benny. The atmosphere was okay and the lines weren't very long. If you are in the area and stop by, I highly recommend playing the Benny Benassi song on repeat, the song is so loud and catchy, our waitress forgot to include something on my bill, twice. We went here for the first time over Labor Day weekend last year while camping nearby. This week we are going back and I honestly can't wait! This is a great small town bar with food that far exceeded my expectations. I had the turkey Rueben and even now I'm still thinking about how delicious it was. The turkey in it was like freshly roasted slices of Thanksgiving Turkey, not just some average deli meat. My husband had the ham and cheese which also had really good quality meat. We were there during a football Saturday so it was quite busy and there were some pretty wasted people next to us, but that's typical if you're going to any bar to watch a game anyway. Lo how the mighty have fallen. I've lived within an hour of Spike's most of my life, and it used to be a jewel. Last night was our last trip, I fear. Seating: I'm not used to having to wait to be seated in a bar - especially when there are open tables. At best one would say the hostess was inattentive. Food: Portions are smaller than ever. The food is still tasty, for bar food - Spike's is not a gourmet house nor does it pretend to be. That's a good thing. However, little cutbacks like not including sour cream with Mexican food signal a decline in quality. Service: Our waitress was pleasant and did a fine job. The hostess, on the other hand, was at best curt. When I asked about drafts, she silently waggled her finger to a relatively short list and waited. Call me crazy, but when you offer fewer than 10 choices, it shouldn't be too troubling to recite them. The waitresses seemed to work together well, as when mine was busy taking a large order, another came by and made sure my beer was refilled promptly. Ten years since my last review and the place is still great. Very busy but service is great. On our visit yesterday the owner was on the floor waiting tables and interacting with customers. I've been here a couple times with friends while heading back down-state after a weekend up north. Each time the service has been slow and the food average. I did enjoy their Bloody Mary, however. If you're looking for a quick bite this isn't your place. Both times I've visited the wait has been more than 45 minutes for our food and it didn't appear particularly busy. If you're just looking for a couple quick drinks though this probably isn't a bad stop. read more

Eh... It has good atmosphere, but the food was just OK. It definitely wasn't anything to write home about. It was also off-putting when everybody in the restaurant stopped and stared at my husband and I when we came in like we were diseased. I swear we're normal people! The waitress was slow and wouldn't give us the time of day throughout our time there, either. I'm not expecting four star service, but I definitely expect a waitress to actually wait for our response when she's checking up on how our meal is instead of a drive-by shooting style check-up. read more

We were driving from the UP back home to Ohio, and were looking for a place to grab a quick bite to eat. This place isn't too far from the highway so is a good option. When we walked in the place was busy, no tables free, but we did easily get 2 seats at the bar. I ordered the Spike Burger..you can customize it with whatever toppings you like, and by default it comes cooked medium, so its good and juicy. There are several options for french fries, regular, waffle, seasoned etc. Definitely go for the seasoned...they do not disappoint. On top of the good food, they have a good draft selection. We will likely stop by again next time we are passing through the city of Grayling. read more

This place needs to be on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I met a friend here for lunch the other day because it was a good half way meeting point. It has a really rustic feel that may scare some, but I loved it. I enjoyed the tackiness of all the names carved into the tables & walls. The burger was outstanding. My kid loved the fried macaroni and cheese. And they have a cocktail called Snake Nuts. Need I say more? read more

While vacationing up north, we deciding to check out Grayling and what it had to offer. After checking out some reviews and websites, we felt we HAD to eat at Spikes Keg 'O' Nails. The great history, the cool sign, the wonderful reviews! So there we were, on a Thursday afternoon - 11:30am, and there were only a couple of tables left. It was kitschy decor, and I could understand a regular wanting to just sip suds at the small bar and chat with friends. A waitress came, gave us menus, and took one of our drink orders (the others were still thinking about it). So far, so good. A few minutes later another waitress came and brought my beverage. We put in our orders. Son - chicken finger basket...do you have Squirt? No. Okay, I'll have a Sierra Mist. Me - Chicken wrap sandwich, and can we get an order of fried pretzels? Sure. Husband - "World Famous Spike Burger with all fixins. Can I get it with sweet potato fries instead? Sure. Orders a beer, too. Waitress #1 comes back, drops off silverware and napkins. Waitress #2 drops off beer. Minutes go by and we grab #2 - Hey, we're missing a pop. Oh, sorry. Rushes off to get it. Comes back with a Squirt - oh, we did have squirt. Okay. #1 drops off pretzels. They were two, small deep fried pretzels. Now I have to admit they were tasty. There isn't much that isn't tasty when it's deep fried. #2 drops off more silverware and napkins. (we had plenty - maybe we looked a little dirty and could use a few extras) I can't remember which of them brought the food. #2 I think. Wrap - check. Burger - check. But regular fries. No sweet fries. Chicken fingers (2) received. Fries were still being made. (Isn't it all dumped in the fryer baskets?) #2 flew by our table several times - my husband's glass was empty a long time. By the time she asked if he wanted a refill he said no. We didn't even bother to correct the fry problem. Oh - a note about the bathrooms - I went in the women's bathroom. Two "Stalls" and one sink. If you are a woman of big girth, you are probably not going to fit in there, and they are not handicap accessible. The food was.....nothing I couldn't get at a Big Boy or my local Kroger. Seriously, this place lives on the hype and history. The food and drinks aren't ANYTHING special. The pretzels are the only reason I'm giving Spike's a 2nd star. There is nothing that would make us come back here if we were in Grayling. Stop in for the kitsch and hype, but don't say I didn't warn you about the lackluster food and service. read more

The perfect Up-North dive bar. Decor is heavy on the wood paneling, antlers, and christmas lights. There's a crane game and an Elvis pinball machine. I was happy to discover that Spike's is open late every night, and it is very cozy and clean. Our waitress was very friendly. The menu offers some Northern Michigan standards, like a fried smelt basket (delicious--definitely get one) and some snazzier things like black bean burgers and sweet potato fries. Certainly it's not haute cuisine, but still deserving of 5 stars because it far exceeded my expectations. I was really surprised to see Hopslam on draft, and even more amazed when I saw the price; my neighborhood bar charges $6 for a 10oz pour, but for the same price Spike's offers a full-to-the-brim 20oz mug! This dangerously low price taught me the hard way that two Keg o' Nails-sized Hopslams will sneak up on you a lot quicker than two of the usual size. I am so glad to have happened upon the Keg o' Nails and will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area. It was the perfect place to wait out a snowstorm. read more

Went often about 15 years ago during vacations and back again. Doesn't disappoint! Line out the door at 4.30pm and line still out the door as we were leaving. Fish and chips are fresh and battered well that you still get that flaky fish as well. Ruben is crispy and simple, but full of flavor. Waffle fries are the best and the burgers looked great although we didn't order it this time. The cookie ice cream sandwich is a good size to share with two. Great beer selection and friendly service!! Can't wait for our next vacation near by. read more

I recently had the chance to check out Spikes, I'm very happy with the service, food and decor. An older, bar style setting with a pretty neat history. We were greeted by friendly employees and were seated promptly. After ordering, the waitress told us that she had forgotten to put the order in so she made adjustments to the bill. Ok, we were here on Friday night a few weeks ago and it was a horrible experience. We ended up leaving. We don't like giving a bad review without a second visit. This time we tried a Sunday, late afternoon. We were seated right away. The whole hostess/waitress divide was confusing. The beer selection was good. We split the Super Spike burger. There were an assortment of toppings, but we stuck with the basics, mustard, onion, and pickle. The sandwich came with chips. This was a really good burger! I wouldn't call the service warm, but it was attentive. Bonus for my husband was that his cherry wheat beer came with a skewer of cherries. We've learned our lesson, avoid high tourist hours. The prices are incredibly reasonable. We had the burger and 2 beers for around $20. It is a nice Up North atmosphere. read more

A place with cold Widow Maker on tap, good food, and some history. DW had a club sandwich, I had a wing basket, and we shared a chips and dips. Food was great except that we ordered fries well done and they came out just normal done. DW had a couple cranberry juice and Tito's cocktails that she liked a lot. Service was good.
