The road is not far away, but traffic was not bothersome. We stayed in one of the 2 room cabins the next weekend. (July 4th). The cabins are set back farther on the property. They seem secluded as you can watch the creek and sit on the porch under the big shade trees. The cabin had a kitchen, living room, 2 rooms each with a queen bed. Again the sink is outside the bathroom which I like as it is easier to share with others. There is free kayak use with your stay. What a bonus. Dave took great care of us and answered any questions we had. It was nice to not be stuck in a hotel room where others are walking up and down the hall and slamming doors. We were on the first floor and it was really small with plastic chairs and no sunlight, so we didn't end up using it at all. It felt a bit misleading compared to how it looked on the website but we didn't care too much.. We did enjoy the pool and hot tub, and overall the place has more of an older, vintage feel. The staff were really nice and anytime we requested something it was handled quickly and everything went smoothly. I would consider staying again, but I would maybe skip the balcony next time.

Anchor Inn is away from the immediate downtown traffic, but still close enough to enjoy shopping and dining nearby. It was such a peaceful location, and I loved that they had a private beach across the street. They also have communal bonfire pits (I didn't utilize this, but will next time!) They also have kayak rentals that are incredibly reasonably priced. I will definitely take advantage of them next time! Next time I come to Traverse, I am most definitely staying at the Anchor Inn!

But what about breakfast, you ask? That's great too. Our first morning was Almond Ciabatta French Toast with Michigan maple syrup and locally produced breakfast sausage. The next morning was this soufflé sort of dish with hash browns, mushrooms, and eggs served in a small bowl, with bacon on the side. Locally baked multi-grain bread was served with fresh Michigan preserves. Every day, there's a fresh fruit cup with berry yogurt and their delicious Korner Kottage Krunch (see KK website for details). Basic idea though, this is the best granola I've ever had. Otherwise, our room (Paris) was comfy and clean. The screened in front porch is nice for winding down with a good book. The location is perfect for walking around downtown, and is across the street from the beach. A quick drive takes you to wineries slightly North, to Old Mission Peninsula, and to downtown Traverse City. Free wi-fi too. Yelper alert--while sitting inside Korner Kottage, my iPhone yelp app said I couldn't check in because I was 2.2 miles away. Not sure if this is due to AT&T coverage, or the app.

The location and beach access is convenient but that's about the only positives from our experience. I grew up coming to this hotel every summer for years, the staff was always wonderful, accommodating and friendly. I was looking forward to returning after a very difficult few months dealing with health issues for a weekend of relaxation. Unfortunately, this hotel no longer exists to provide hospitality but more so, to do the absolute bare minimum. While charging a premium, mind you. The rooms and property were always clean and well maintained. This is no longer the case. The "complimentary breakfast" is actually laughable. I was aware it wouldn't be a hot continental breakfast, disappointing but fine. Breakfast is a cardboard box with the most lackluster selections are delivered to your room after you fill out a paper slip at the front desk, each day of your stay. Not only is the system inconvenient, the food provided was disgusting. Jimmy Dean frozen sandwiches you microwave in your room, microwave oatmeal cup, random bruised fruit, yogurt, and don't bother if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions. Prior to arrival, I called a few days ahead to inquire specifically about the breakfast options since I have allergies. The staff member was initially rude upon answering the phone and became increasingly annoyed when I asked questions about allergens for the complimentary breakfast and their allergy protocol. Surely, I can't be the first person with allergens they have had as a guest. The staff member insisted they could not provide allergen information ahead of check in and insisted the front desk would have information upon arrival. Upon arrival, that was not the case. Not one staff member had the slightest awareness of any allergen information and barely made eye contact during check in. Be prepared for additional fees and charges on your credit card, eventually they fall off and it's their prerogative but it wasn't made clear upon booking directly through their website how they do their charges and seemed excessive, especially for the quality of service and accommodations. The room was not clean, after driving all day and dealing with the unfriendly check in, the room was disappointing. The balcony was unusable for all the spiders and cobwebs that clearly haven't been cleaned. Which is interesting since an early check in wasn't available but yet no one had clearly been in cleaning that room. I inquired that their beach facing rooms were currently available for a lower price than we booked our parking lot view room and if we could be moved to a beach front room since we already paid more than their current booking price. I didn't want a refund, exchange of the difference, or any money back, just moved since they clearly had the rooms available. It was end of season and weather was predicted to be rainy, and it was. The staff member was again incredibly rude. With so many places to stay in the area, don't bother with this hotel.

It is reasonably clean, doesn't have an unpleasant…read moresmell, but our room had problems--some cosmetic, some not--that make it unlikely we'll stay there again. One of the ceiling tiles was mostly pulled off. Though the sides of the shower stall looked recently replaced, the floor of it was coming apart. More concerning, the door looked like it had been recently jimmied open, and the frame of the window screen was pulled out from the window (see photos)--it wouldn't be hard for someone to pull out the full screen, and if mosquitoes were out they'd be getting in your room. The dresser had a notice taped to it stating that one of its legs was broken--instead of printing out the notice, why not fix the leg? Some of the towels had a distinct yellow stain--we made a point of using the whiter ones. Be aware that the room door locks automatically, and you can't set it to stay unlocked--if you close it behind you, you will be locked out, so check to be sure you've got your key before leaving. We didn't learn this the hard way, but easily could have. At least it was quiet, and close to where we needed to be. I have seen worse, though next time I'm in the area, I'll be looking for something better.
