I've never been so conflicted about a Peruvian Chicken joint until now. Typically I reach for the yucca first - check the consistency and crunch, move onto a piece of chicken breast - check for moistness and flavor, and finally dip that piece of chicken in the green and white sauces - check, got my score. For Spin Pollo though, it was a mixed bag but generally in a good way. First off, the Peruvian Chicken. As usual, I'll get my 1/2 chicken with 2 sides. The chicken breast was hot out of their rotisserie (had to wait 15 min while more chicken was being finished), which probably helped it not get overcooked and dried out. Even after a 10-15 min ride home from the take-out, it was still juicy and relatively warm/hot. While it did have flavor, it wasn't nearly as strong and full of spice, as some of the other Peruvian Chicken joints that are "super" in the area (if you know, you know). Dipping in the white and green sauces, they were pretty standard although the green was probably on the lower end of my favorite green sauces. It was just a bit too watery and lacking in a good spice/kick. The yucca unfortunately lacked the outer crunch and inner softness that I like (and that most would). Perhaps it was the take-out and the lack of airflow in the container, which made the yucca be a little soggy. However, I surmised that had I eaten it at the restaurant it would have been piping hot and a nice airy crisp on the outside. I will have to give them a pass on this, although I would highly recommend they poke some holes in the container to allow the moisture to escape and not build up inside. Finally, I must admit I've been on a Lomo Saltado (LS) binge of late. After discovering how tasty it is and suitable for my "Asian" tastes. Quick history detour - even though I'm not fully read up on this - but basically this dish came to be after some fusion of Chinese and Peruvian tastes came together and bam, the result is Lomo Saltado. So the LS here was solid, but I was a little disappointed in how "soupy" the sauce was, instead of being more thick and "saucy." It also seemed a bit lacking in the portion size compared to some of the other places I've been to in the area. Again, not a big deal as it was still generally considered by my stomach to be ample food, but just something to note. All said, I'm sure I'll hit up Spin Pollo again due to its location, and hopefully next time the yucca won't be as mushy and soggy. For LS though, I may opt to get that at a different location if that's what I'm craving. TL;DR: Generally good Peruvian Chicken, although the spices/flavor are not as strong/complex/deep as some of the other joints. Great for those who don't want all them spices, but for those (like me) who want that extra Peruvian spice, it was a little lackluster. The yucca probably is really good when fresh out of their fryer, but by the time I got the take-out home the yuccas were a bit sad. read more

I work right next to Super Chicken, and if you know about Super Chicken you know they are the best in the area. However, Spin Pollo might be giving it a run for its money! My coworkers and I came for lunch and surprisingly no one was there. I ordered 1/2 chicken since I like to split them into 2 days and it was still delicious after I reheated it! The chicken was flavorful and juicy. The only thing that sucks is that the platanos and rice is a $1 extra. Also, the yellow sauce is not that great. Its very runny which makes me think they water down the sauce. I like the sauces a bit thicker so was very disappointed. My friend ordered the steak and cheese, which was actually very good! Horchata was delicious and it didn't have the cinnamon chunky residue on the bottom of the cup. The Lomo Saltado was eyeballing me last time I came but I'll be trying that next. When we came for lunch during the week, we were told there was a 10 minute wait for the chicken. 20 minutes later the chicken was still spinning. At 25 minutes we went up to check on our orders, and it was only then they started making our meals. While we waited we tried the yuquita balls, which were basically fried yuca balls stuffed with cheese. They were crispy and fried well, but lacked flavor. Definitely needed a dipping sauce, salsa, or something to give it more flavor. When my meal was finally ready, the chicken more than made up for the wait. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender, juicy, and was seasoned well. For my two sides I got the steak fries and white rice. Both were good. No complaints about them, but nothing special either. When coming to Spin Pollo, definitely take advantage of their lunch special (quarter chicken, 2 sides, and a can of soda for $7.50...substitute bottled water for the can of soda for $1 more). Definitely a major improvement from the last time around, and I am not just throwing that around because the owner commented on my review and well, did some things. Sure, it helped that he reached out to me and in a professional manner to try and let me give his business a second chance. Yes, he actually is a really nice guy. But the food did actually taste a lot better the second time around than the first. As he promised, I did try the plaintains again. This time, they were absolutely terrific. They did not taste like mushed banana meal. I hate when businesses half-ass it. He clearly does not. And when you take a bite, you absolutely taste the difference. The chicken was still a bit salty, but it was not as overwhelming as last time. It was much more well, shall I say, more like Peruvian chicken and less like a salty piece of bird. I think it helped that he was there today to ensure that everything tasted as it should. I also tried the black beans this time. Extremely meaty and flavorful, not watery and the portion you get is really good bang for your buck. My suggestion however is to leave a water container out for customers when customers ask for water cups. If you are worried customers will just abuse the privilege and use it to fill up with soft drinks/non-water instead, just do not leave anything but the water out. Problem solved. Went for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon. No line. A few tables taken and a steady slow stream of customers. Got the 1/4 dark meat chicken. My two chosen sides are fried rice and pinto beans. Wow- everything was delicious!! The chicken was very juicy and the skin had flavor. The pinto beans were good (I got them on the side but you can get them on the fries or plain rice). The fried rice was very tasty. My friend remarked that she had never got the fried rice before but from now on would order it. Next time I would get my exact order again. I always passed this place and never thought of ordering so I thought I would give it a try today. I ordered 2 things: yuquita balls and spin salchipapa. The service was fast, by the time I got to the restaurant my food was already for pickup. It was around 3pm so there wasn't that many customers to start with. The yuquita balls were delicious!!! The second installment of my list of Peruvian Chicken Joints in the DMV region since next to kabobs, they are a staple offering amongst the most popular dining options. I will break down the elements into the following categories: 1) Chicken 2) Sides 3) Sauces 4) Unique items 5) X-factor 1)Chicken- 5 stars for having well seasoned skin, juicy white meat that has absorbed flavors through and through. Avoids the common flaw of having dry overcooked tasteless meat indistinguishable from the rotisserie options found at grocery stores. 2) Sides- a little annoying that they charge extra for plantains, they are done exceptionally well so hard to complain. The fries are surprisingly not good (undercooked and greasy) so I would avoid them in favor of the yucca fries instead. The yuquita balls (deep fried yucca stuffed with melted mozzarella) are a rare treat 3) Sauces- standard spicy green and lemony white sauce, but they offer an orange "secret sauce" which has a mild spicy chipotle-like profile. 4) Unique items- for those wanting to branch beyond the chicken+sides, they offer a decent white fish ceviche, beef chaufa (peruvian fried rice), and lomo saltado, although I am not personally drawn to salchipapa (sliced beef franks and fries with ketchup/mustard/mayo topped with a fried egg), but it is there for those who crave this fast food favorite 5) X-factor- the individual meal deals as well as the family specials provide great bang for your buck (or should I say cluck?) and they boast an impressive drink selection including horchata, and mango/passion fruit juice. Wow the chicken was actually fresh and tasty! It felt less greasy and actually healthier. I was afraid it was going to be super salty but it was not! It was great with the sauces. The 2 side dishes that come with the chicken were also great: Chicken fried rice w/ pinto beans and fried plantains. Both were tasty and good portions. The fried rice alone could make me feel full, and I really appreciate the fried plantains here... because they are usually quite pricey but disappointing in size and quality :/ I never had Havanna/Argentine alfajores, but the alfajor here was good enough for me--dulce de leche with coconut flakes between two sweet+buttery biscuits. Yuquita balls were creamy/cheesy, and of course, better than just yuca fries. Homemade flan here is also satisfying. That little note inspired me to go back today to order again. With a million choices for charcoal chicken in this area-what makes them stand out is the customer service. The awesome food is a bonus. Do yourself a favor and check out the delicious Peruvian chicken, Carne Asada, subs, and sides this place has to offer! The owners and staff are super friendly and are always up to provide recommendations from the menu. They offer a unique fried yuca ball stuffed with cheese as a complimentary side to your meal. The chicken was seasoned well and cooked to perfection with juicy white and dark meat. The only one minor drawback was it took a little longer to prepare the food but it was worth it to get a nice hot and juicy meal with all the fixings. Very grateful that this business decided to participate in a Yelp event and I got an invite to participate. I've driven by this place so many times and have always overlooked it but will be making up for it moving forward. I'm not Peruvian and don't really know what a perfect Peruvian style rotisserie chicken should be. To be fair, I'm not sure this place claimed to be Peruvian chicken. Anyway, what I do know is when something tastes good to my palate, whether it is Peruvian or something else. I was excited to see that this place uses charcoal to cook their chicken. However, however they did it and whatever wood they use, the smokiness is there but too strong, in my opinion. The chicken also was drier than other places and still a bit tough. I also wish that rotisserie places would use birds with less breast meat, which is not very flavorful and can be very dry. 4-star on price for a whole chicken and for service. read more

Very pleased with this Peruvian chicken joint. The last few places I've tried has not been the best. The chicken was pretty good, seasoned well, and quarter seemed to be perfect size. The rice and black beans were delicious. Yuca was good as well. Those yuquita balls though... so good! The yellow sauce was on the peppery side which I didn't mind and the special sauce they had was surprisingly good. Will definitely return to try the lomo saltado and other items on the list. The DMV offers such a great selection of Peruvian chicken spots--I really do think we're spoiled when it comes to our pollo. Spin definitely adds another great option to the mix. For me, it's located just a hop, a skip, and a jump away from my parents' home so it's ultra convenient when I get that chicken/fried yuca craving. The parking is really easy too--unlike some other pollo shops I know--which is a big plus in my book. The restaurant itself was very clean, so I don't mind actually ordering and eating in. Some other Peruvian spots are strictly take out for me, just because when I'm engaged in stuffing my face with flavorful juicy bird flesh, I prefer not to sit elbow to elbow with my fellow chicken-eaters. It's a messy affair for me--juices and chicken pieces flying everywhere. Advice: Hands-on Peruvian chicken is probably not the most ideal first date spot. At Spin, however, you actually have some space, and the area is kept clean and tidy. I feel like I can work on my meal in peace--another PLUS! The chicken itself was moist and delicious, and I loved my side order of yuca--crisp on the outside and nice and starchy on the inside. The green sauce was spicier than other green sauces I've tried before, which is just the way I prefer it. You've got to go here!!! Having eaten through many Peruvian chicken places in northern Va this one is legit! I opted for the 1/4 chicken white, white rice and onion salad. Best part the breast was perfectly juicy, white rice was cooked simply providing a healthy option if you're on the run and still trying to watch your macros and the ONION SALAD. You've gotta have it! All other places I've gone restaurants will slice the onion and just put lemon on at the moment you order giving you spicy as anything onions to try and eat (i love onions but i get heartburn). These were properly made with the onions already prepped and not spicy at all. It mixed perfectly with the white rice giving just the perfect amount of tartness. I work in the area and they're very community oriented and first responder friendly. Iv had the Yucca balls which is Yucca balls stuffed with cheese and deep fried with a Mayo sauce. The lomo saltado is juicy and well seasoned. Iv also had the steak and cheese and they use good quality meat. My co worker gets the rotisserie chicken which he seems to really enjoy. My wife orders the Salchipapa which came with Steak and it was delicious we were so full by the end but we really enjoyed every bite. If you wanna gauge whether a place knows what it's doing, you order the best possible dish. If you don't know what it is, it's steak strips in sauce with onions and tomatos, poured over a bed of thick cut steak fries. Sounds simple enough, but I assure you most Peruvian joints won't do it that well. But Spin Pollo makes the best Lomo I've had in a long while. It's a little pricey at $14.50, but if you're looking for good Peruvian it's worth it. The steak is delectable. The sauce it sits in is so good. I took my time savoring every bite of steak with onion. Their rotisserie chicken is also fantastic. It's spiced a little more than other places which I love. Their green and yellow sauces are a must if you get the chicken. Drizzle those bad boys all over your rice. The orange sauce goes great with fries and yucca. I discovered this place while going to Baskin and Robbins next door and decided to try it this weekend. I was very happy with my half chicken regular and two sides. I had french fries and plantain as my sides. It did take a little while but I was in no rush and the food was delicious.
