So in my first two visits here I must say the food has been fantastic. The burgers I'd compare them to as good or better than brocks or capital ale house. I'd highly recommend it to any college students especially on half burgers Thursday to give it a try. The fries and onion rings are definitely good but it's hard to mess up on food like that. I'll admit the atmosphere is a lil sketch at first and it's not 5 star but at the very minimal 4 star. So far the two waitresses and the cook I met are great people so good staff so far. I was going to give this a 4 star but I'm giving it a 5 because I believe this place deserves a better rating than what others have given it. read more

I agree with other reviews as i don't know how they stay in business. Went here because I had a coupon for a free meal and I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it! Food was not good, place was falling apart, bench / table was disgusting and like many other reviews say, the waitress told me She was new. Service was incredibly slow which I don't understand because there was only one other couple in the joint. They sat down after me but got their food before me. The food was alright, but the waitress and decor left A LOT to be desired. When we came in, the waitress invited us to sit wherever we'd like. We then had the pleasure of listening to her talk to the safety inspector that was reviewing the restaurant. I honestly and truly believe, regardless of how new you are (which she claimed many times), you should not tell the safety inspector that your building isn't "up to code" and "would fail any inspection". The place looked like a dump; broken floor tiles, broken bathroom door, missing ceiling tiles, questionable seating. I don't know why I decided to eat there, but the food was alright. It's a great place if you want to catch Hep C. Seriously everything feels sticky. They vibe is weird. Like the 1st floor that's really the second floor has this weird "let's all sit on the couches that were bought from a yard sale that everyone and their pregnant girlfriend has sat on. Then the second floor that's really the third floor has this depressing club vibe. Pretty sure the only one enjoying themselves up there is the DJ. The bathrooms are gross. Every time I walk in it looks like a turf war between two roaches. Spirits is great for when you don't want to really go anywhere nice so you can go to a bar in a snuggy and it being socially acceptable. read more

I ate at this place back in 2010 when I was helping my brother with his apartment. The inside of this place was rundown and smelled gross. The waitress was 8 months pregnant and shouldn't have been waitressing the whole floor by herself. They obviously don't care about her or her unborn baby. It took an hour and a half for them to get us our order. We noticed smoke coming from the kitchen 20 mins before our order came out. When our orders came to the table all of our food was burnt. My gyro was burnt and had no seasoning. My mother's, brother's and sister in law's sandwiches were burnt beyond recognition. Next time I'm in the area I will avoid this place like the plague. read more

As I write this, I am still suffering from what I think is food posioning.. and since I've been home almost 3 hours already..I've run to the bathroom about 4 times already. I hate to give this restaurant such a low rating because the waitress was so nice and the outside was very clean but the kitchen was just dirty. After answering the phones and touching her hair, the cook reached into the potatoe chip bag to scoop up some chips for my sandwich platter. I got the BBQ pork sandwich which the waitress reassured me was "delicious". I wanted the pasta that they had but apparently she told me that the menu was outdated and they didn't make pasta anymore. I asked her what she recommended and she told me the reuben. I wasn't in the mood so I pointed out the other sandwiches and she told me that the pork was good. When I got it, it was on a plate with potatoe chips and cole slaw. I bit into the sandwich because it smelled delicious only to bite into some tendon? I spit it out and took another bite only to be unable to chew. It not only left a funny taste in my mouth.. I could smell it through my nose. I tried a bit of the cole slaw which was sliced carrots and cabbage and I'm pretty sure the mayo was expired. Not wanting to make a scene, I sipped on my tea and munched on my friend's french fries. I love mom and pop restaurants but I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon. =( read more

Poor service, disgusting restaurant (look at all the health violations), lack of itemized bills (you could be paying for other peoples food and drinks and not know it), skunky beer, dirty lines for draft beers. That's why I like it. It's a dive, with good drinks, barkeeps with either a touch of good looks or bad attitude. The food is to satisfy your hunger while you drink and yak it up...not make a cable TV show. Reminds me of an Off-Bourbon all-night bar in New Orleans, complete with a couch to crash on and a gas fireplace as a bonus. Smoking deck out back for the cool people. Cheap, beat up pool tables and banged-up bathrooms you don't get nervous about using. Go. Drink. Meet people and have a good time. Everyone else can go to Chili's or Ye Olde Steak And Ale. Excellent. Exactly what I expected and the was food was great. My entrée was the New Yorker Sandwich (sans tomato) with fries; delicious. The bar upstairs is GREAT!!! I love a good local bar and that's exactly what I found. It's like a little hidden treasure in downtown fredericksburg. Yeah, the place is run down and needs a face lift but isnt that what you look for in a good bar? A place that gets better and better the later it gets in the night? I have a great time there even on a random, slow week night. The bartenders are more than entertaining and the other customers are a good time too. If you drink at Spirits but never eat there-- you're missing out. Spirits has a diverse and unique menu. They serve food that you won't find anywhere else. I was in there last Tuesday and had the Steak and Cheese. Think a classic philly sub but with lettuce and tomato. Now that was an interesting take on a respected classic. We have been to Fredericksburg multiple times and had never eaten at Spirits until this past weekend. There was NOBODY in the dining room except the waitress at 7pm on a Saturday!. We decided to take a chance and were rewarded. We received excellent service and delicious burgers (cooked to order- medium rare) and a steak sandwich that was large and juicy. The prices were very reasonable and had the opportunity to speak with the chef- a lifelong Fredericksburg resident. Overall, a very pleasant surprise. read more

My wife and I decided to give this restaurant a try, as we were told they had a new chef and the best pizza in town. It certainly is an old building, full of charm and atmosphere. We ordered the Meaty Bones pizza, and oh my God! It was delicious! I normally don't eat the crust of the pizza, but as this was brushed with garlic butter, it was irresistible! The server was attentive to our needs, and the chef even came out and chatted with us for a few minutes. I especially liked the indoor fireplace, it made it warm and cozy on a very cold day. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any of my friends dining in Downtown Fredericksburg. The rest of the menu looked really good too, and we can't wait to try the rest. read more

Me, my brother and his girlfriend went to spirits today and well NEVER AGAIN! Worst service I have ever had I get better service at McDonald's. waitresses were very unprofessional and rude. We walked in and it seemed filthy but the food smelled good we were asked to seat ourselves so we did. At first we ordered a pizza and some wings they said they were out of wings and that they were a little "backed up" even though they only had 3 tables with people at them. but no big deal we don't need Wings that bad then after waiting about 10 minutes they'd said the pizza would take 30minutes as they were cooking 3 already. So instead we ordered sandwiches. All 2 of the waitresses working were yelling acros the room at each other and sat on their ass the whole time even as people entered the restaurant. We stayed for an hour and the waitress not once came to fill up our drinks so we asked a different waitress to check on our food which we had been waiting an hour for. She said she would then walked into the kitchen about 2 minutes later she walked out and instead of informing us on how long our food would be she sat down and talked to her friend. At this point we decided to leave and as we leave the waitress who was suppose to find put about our food shot me a dirty look. We walked the streets a bit and passed by spirits again and saw a waitress asking people on the street for change and trying to push coupons on people. So unprofessional.
