First I ate dinner at Spirits on a Wednesday night and the salmon and service were excellent. Even the owner came by to say, hello. Then I went back for a class reunion party on a Saturday night and the band and event went great. I like the inside-outside feel. IMPRESSIVE PLACE Wow, I'm flabbergasted. I had an apartment in Willoughby in the 90s and it wasn't a bar back then. I'll tell you they're open early. I had a wonderful Smashburger for 14 with blue cheese. They open at 11 AM. It's here in downtown Willoughby the historic section. It's attached to an old train car that Marilyn and JFK rode in. Wow. It's very nice to walk in off the dining room which was the old round house for the train. This is an impressive place. I can't believe I've never been, the bartender and owner are fantastic. Owner is a big hockey fan I was talking to him about Derek Sanderson. He's from Boston. Five stars all the way I'll come here every time passing through. I heard there was a change and had to go back to experience the new Spirits in Willoughby. They have reopened the wine car, and I can't wait to go back again just to experience their wine bar. We sat in the bar area, tried a draft and had a cocktail. We really enjoyed the new food, and I loved the Burning River chicken sandwich. Their wing night is Wednesdays, so our party enjoyed the boneless with BBQ. We also got the spud skins and I would absolutely get them again. Our waitress checked in every so often and was just on it, the front staff were running around and provided great service. You know...I've always been kind of structured in my reviews. This place is 5 stars because everything was perfect that place is 4 stars because this one thing wasn't perfect. I have to rethink that because of this very eatery. The food was good. Not blow me out of the water amazing but certainly tummy filling fare. I had the prime rib and added mushrooms, peppers and onions with a side of au jus. The meat was a bit on the drier side and a little tough. But...onion rings on the side...yes please for these sweet, savory, crispy little rings of greatness. The lettuce wedge salad and crisp, light and satisfying...it just lacked a balsamic glaze to add the need touch of sweetness. And a Spicy Cucumber Martini with a Tajin rim...all you need is one, but you'll want more! Sweet with the sour Tajin jolt was in perfect balance. It is made with jalepeno tequila which I got notes of, but it could have been a bit spicier. So, with the issues, why not a 4 star review, you may ask... It was the service. Hands down the greatest service I have ever had. Our server was at our table to greet us with menus in literal seconds. She was bright, bubbly, and sweet as apple pie. She gave suggestions, hyped the food and drinks. She was efficient and we never lacked for anything. I felt like she was just serving us even though she had a seated area, a bar area, and an outdoor seating space to take care of that was overflowing with people for the holiday weekend with a band! And the set-up of the restaurant itself was just cool, chill and playful. The barn like feel was so inviting and the outdoor option to sit could make it feel like a new place everytime you come! I've been here twice. I came with a group of coworkers the first time and came in the door and there was one bartender who was also serving guests. She was only serving regulars at the bar. I stood around for about 10 minutes confused as I wanted to eat at a table. A coworker of mine finally showed up and she was able to get us a table as she's a regular there. Service was okay when we got there but her priority was the bar. It was just okay. Nothing special. It's in a barn type of building and it was open however they have outside seating. Second time I came here was with some friends for our monthly book club meeting. When I tell you we waited over an hour for our food. We were told there was a backup in the kitchen and that it would be awhile. It was busy. Service was just okay. Our server seemed rushed and didn't smile or seem super friendly. It was also so loud that I couldn't hear my friends speak at the same table. The food was really good though and I loved the cheeseburger and fries. I wanted well done, not burnt and they burnt my sandwich. It was so hard and I couldn't eat much of it. I will say fries do not come with most meals and they charge an extra $3 to substitute fries which is odd considering I ordered a burger. Overall, it was okay. The food was the highlight. Personally this gives more bar vibes than restaurant and with the service being so slow I'm not sure I would come back. read more

We used to love the draft selection and the food quality, but the last two times we were there, it was not good. I ordered a chicken sandwich and there were pieces of chicken, not a breast. It probably was 2-3 oz. The next time I ordered a margarita and it had no lemon lime mix in it, I also ordered a turkey sandwich and there was a single slice of turkey in the bun and I believe they were charging $15 for the sandwich with fries. As far as bar food, it is ok food. I was with 12 people and almost everyone ate all there food. I only took a pic of a few of the people near me. Everyone got there food at the same time. That was cool. They have extra napkins on the table and a water pitcher for people which is a nice touch. A group of 4 of us were there last night at 730- they were not really busy except for those who were enjoying drinks. Very disappointed in the food and kitchen. We waited over an hour for 2 Philly cheesesteaks, a burger and fish dinner. We had asked our waitress several times where the food was and felt like we got " lip service" . At 9 pm we were told that the kitchen was backed up due to a catering party and was trying to catch up?? Were they catering off site as by 9 pm we were a group of 4 without alot of other people in the dining area- no large party around‍. Well, we just had one of the worst experiences of a restaurant ever tonight. At least a month ago I made a reservation for group of 14 people so they've known about this for a while and they confirmed our reservation a few days ago. (by the way, the first time I made it online on their website and I waited to get a confirmation and it never came. So I called them myself about a week later and they said oh that doesn't work on the website and I said, then get it fixed or take it off your website! Duh!) It wasn't busy by any means at 5:30 when we got there. But today was the day they decided to have a new cook working for the first time, and also just didn't have enough help. And we waited and we waited and we waited. The food came out very scattered with long waits in between and two people in our group actually never got their food at all, but they were given a bill for it! Ultimately they got it free but never got to eat with the rest of us. How on earth could the server not notice the two people never got their food?? And as for the rest of us, we all ate at different times throughout a 2 to 2 1/2 hour time frame because the food came out of the kitchen so slow. The food that did arrive was decent but the service was absolutely horrible. Just totally unacceptable. We will not be going back. read more

We went on a random Monday afternoon and there was only one lady answering phones, taking orders, and slinging drinks and I have to say she absolutely rocked! The best service and there were lots of others there! My husband split a HUGE BLT! And it was great! Was nice to sit on the patio with the doggo, enjoy the beautiful October weather, and kick back a few cold ones. If I'm back to the area I will be back! The outdoor patio with doggos was really great. Our server was overburdened with tables so things went really slowly. Not her fault. The menu is pretty limited and pretty basic. My sauvignon blanc was really good. My French onion soup was also good, but cold. The "housemade Bleu cheese dressing" on my wedge wasn't anything special. We just came for drinks/to hang out. The spot is Cool in that it's nothing fancy and in a barn. In warmer months (we went in October) they had cornhole setup outside as well as bocce which we enjoyed playing with some tables outside. It's a different feel from the rest of dtw - more relaxed and seemed to have a more middle aged/ adult clientele. We also tried the wine- I like dry red and thought their merlot was great but the other more sweet wines were not that great - I also do not drink/like a lot of sweet wine and only tried the reds so I may not be the best person to comment. We did not try any food but did not look like it had an extensive menu or anything too great, just some simple bar food. Overall it's a great place to come hang out and enjoy wine or drinks (and actually hear each other talk) or play some games after going to dinner at one of the other area restaurants. I'm very confused by this place... beautiful bar with an amazing patio. Delicious house made wine and VERY small menu of mid range tasty appetizers.... but the owner seems to think it's a dive bar... Like I said it's a beautiful bar with a mid range menu, but the female staff are all dressed in tiny plunging tank tops and super short shorts. The two girls working the night we were there were both incredibly rude and inattentive. They acted like they were incredibly overworked with only 8 customers at the bar. When we first sat down we didn't get a Hi or Hello, but were greeted with "What do you want?" followed by "I guess you want menus huh?" The owner (pointed out to us by a server) had no problem hanging out behind the bar in a dirty t-shirt and pouring himself a few beers. Not uncommon behavior in a seedy dive bar but a little surprising in a nice dtw restaurant. All in all this place could be a nice addition to dtw, but the people who run it need to figure out what they want it to be and either train their staff better or find new ones. read more

She shoved them on our table and quickly ran off, never to be seen again. We intended to order some appetizers from the start. When another server eventually came by, I complained that we had finished our beer and wine without even being able to place our food order. He shrugged it off and asked if we still wanted to eat, without offering to comp at least PART of our $14 bill for the inconvenience and horrible service. What a waste of our time! Needless to say, we left without eating and begrudgingly paid, but no one was tipped. The only silver lining was the free self-serve popcorn... albeit, the machine was nearly empty with not enough to go around the entire place. As for the wine made in-house (supposedly a sweet red blend), it tasted like it had gone bad. There were more vinegar notes than anything else. I wasn't sure whether that was intentional. You're much better off visiting the Geneva/Madison area wineries. read more
