Living in East Hollywood near Vermont and Hillhurst makes for a shopper's paradise. Especially if that shopper has a taste for the unique, the unusual, and the luxe. Spitfire Girl is a gift shop that shares some sensibilities with Gold Bug in Pasadena and the sadly departed Necromance in West Hollywood. And, yet, remains it's own lady. Here we have fake taxidermy with a whimsical touch, books about Cookie Mueller, holiday ornaments featuring eccentric celebrities (Joe Exotic!) and a more scented items than you can shake a stick at. The scented candles at Spitfire Girl have become something essential for me. Their wood candles are remarkably fragrant and luxurious. No. 17 is my go to. And while the candle may be close to 40 dollars, it lasts for weeks and is nearly as potent as pure incense. (Their perfume line is also quite extensive and if you are shopping for a fragrance for you or a loved one, you will have many options to choose from.) Scented candles and perfume naturally tend to go along with (at least when February is near) jewelry, which there is an extensive collection of. Most of it look like estate pieces, possibly Edwardian or inspired by the era, with a few modern pierces here and there. Definitely a bit up-market but, as far as I can tell, quality merchandise. There are also a number of things that serve as lovely options for children: books aimed at young readers and a very cute collection of stuffed animals. I actually have a skunk I bought from them long ago. I didn't realize till I arrived in Los Angeles how common those little stinkers are here. Almost as common as people working on their screenplay in Starbucks. The staff have universally been kind and helpful. Riss is especially nice and a pleasure to chat with. So happy this place is in the neighborhood -- great atmosphere and a postive vibe all around. It's become our go-to for greeting cards (birthday, holidays, etc.) and if I understand correctly, some of them are made in-house with sustainable wood. I stopped in quickly because I loved the decor and my daughter was very intrigued by the space. It was 11:15am this morning, before her music class a few doors down and I had about 5 seconds of looking at the shirt rack while she was playing with some dishes when the employee asked that I "watch her" and there were lots of fragile items. She was stacking about five little dishes and if she had broken all of them I would've paid for them. She was literally playing with my grandmas china set the night before and not broken anything. I felt very unwelcome. I'm a single mom and have very few moments to feel like myself, and I just wanted a few seconds to browse before going to her class. Again, I would've gladly paid for anything had she broken anything, but I didn't even get a chance to look around before feeling like I didn't belong. read more

The customer service here is excellent. I don't leave reviews that often but wanted to voice my appreciation for Riss, who was so nice while I looked at rings for a potential wedding band. The jewelry selection is unique and beautiful. While I couldn't find a perfect match to go with my engagement ring, Riss was patient and encouraged me to take pictures for inspo so I could continue my search for something just right. She is the friendliest, like the whole neighborhood's Bestie -- especially all the cute pups that come by for treats. Riss knows every single item hiding throughout the store. She always has great ideas -- whether I'm shopping for my mom, my friends, or a new baby in the crew. My only problem at Spitfire: I always leave with as many gifts for myself as for anyone else. Selling poorly made jewelry. Bad customer service from the manager (NOT the store staff) - likes to share her assumption on what caused the damage without even asking the customer to find out what had happened, apparently it's because she is a jeweler herself. I don't mind her professional opinion, but let's be open and listen, and stick to the role as a store manager first. After all, your assumption is incorrect. Will never return. read more

I stumbled upon this little gem while I was on my way to a local eatery. I landed street parking right in front of this store and the name caught my initial attention. Within five steps of entering into this store I already wanted to make a purchase. I spotted a tarot card set created by the one and only Salvador Dali. The prices are so reasonable, especially considering the exquisite quality of theses lovingly hand curated items. So I ended up taking home the Dali set as well as a few other items. But I'd have to say the best part of the store was the attendant, Riss. She was very welcoming, kind, helpful, and her energy was incredible. I'll definitely be back. I've been coming here forever and for sure it has great stuff. The man that helped me on my last visit was wonderful. There was a item hanging on the wall which I had seen before and this time i thought "ok I'm gonna get it". Sadly it was the last one left and slightly damaged. So i didn't make that purchase but we left with what we came in for. On the walk home my daughter googled the item cause she knew how much I loved it and was hoping to surprise me with it. The item was 50.00 online from the actual maker and 150.00 in Spitfire. The mark up made me sick. So then I started looking at the items I just purchased and the mark ups were all just as high. I would imagine rent there is high, but not as high as others as she's been there for a long time. I can't shop anywhere where i feel taken advantage of. I emailed them and called about an issue I had and no one returned my call and my email was left unanswered/ignored. 2 weeks later, I finally get a hold of someone and I was given some run around about pricing and what I was charged. I love this store! I've been to the Melrose location and wasn't aware they had a Hillhurst location! I was with a friend who was delighted with the wide variety of unique and off beat gifts. There perfume and candles are divine. Bought a lovely tarot deck, and my friend purchased all sorts of adorable items for her niece. The best part was our spot on sales person. Her name is Aaron. She was kind, attentive, and informative. I hope they give commissions on sales because I wouldn't have purchased anything ( Covid broke!) but her eye pointed me to a gorgeous deck, and I couldn't be happier. I'm so happy I accidentally stumbled into this shop while hunting for change to feed the parking meters on Hillhurst lol. The lady running shop was so sweet and helpful (in my excitement I totally forgot to ask her name). So after a quick brunch at Alcove next door I dragged the whole family in to browse the plethora of cute, creepy, funny, and mysterious wares lining the shelves and displays of this perfectly unique little shop. The family picked out some hand made soaps and various bits and bobs and I found a stunning vintage carnelian ring as a gift for my mom which I'm happy to say she loved! I will definitely be coming back soon to check out some of the more creative items for my personal collection. Spitfire Girl is a cute, quirky gift shop a couple doors down from Alcove on Hillhurst. It's a short walk from my house and I tend to use it as a default stop for last-minute gift shopping. The wares are fun, if often stunningly expensive. I always find something to buy when I need to - I can walk in without ideas and walk out with a wrapped gift within fifteen minutes. The window displays are always eye-catching and a little bit strange, heavy on unique home goods. The store sells a lot of these, as well as a nice selection of fashion jewelry and other sundry gift shop items. The prices are pretty high. Twenty bucks will get you a stocking stuffer or two, and you're even fairly limited with fifty in your pocket. Still, I've gotten some cool jewelry in the $40-60 range, and it's all gone over well with my friends. The staff is also approachable and helpful. If you say how much you want to spend, they will show you the best uses for your money. My husband has gotten me a couple gifts here that are very dear to my heart. One is a wooden bookmark featuring a dog on a diving board. The other is a ceramic dish with a basset hound head on a human torso in the middle. (I am a dog lady, and more specifically a basset lady.) He got me the dish as an impromptu Christmas gift, and I freaked out when I opened it. The basset part looked just like my dog, and the torso was slouched in a striped T-shirt, looking more or less like my husband. The plate was basically made for me. I asked how much it cost, and he prompted me to guess. "Twenty?" "No." "Forty??" "Forty-five. I thought about getting two, but just, no." So yeah, monstrously overpriced, but more importantly, perfect. I will say I have yet to test some of the finer points of customer service at Spitfire - I've spent money, but I've never tried to make a return. The other reviews do make me wary, and all potential customers should probably read them. Still, I'll continue to default to Spitfire Girl for gifts and basset home goods as long as we're both in the neighborhood. read more
