I've come across a huge problem with my 80 gallon goldfish tank and ran out of ideas on what to do. I want to say thank you to the two gentlemen who's been helping me figure my problem out. I'll get names next time I go. Turns out it was the sand I had inside of it. It wasn't "real" sand. It was chopped up slate raising ph in my water. The sand I got are meant for cichlids. So I took alllllll my sand out and now will just keep it bare bottom. My tank looks SO MUCH better. My fish look happier. The water looks great. I love this fish store for so many reasons. Helpful employees. Clean place. Healthy fish. They have a great variety here. You can tell the people who run this store CARE about their livestock and customers. So we have been to this location before when it was another aquarium business and always left empty handed due to lack of anything that interested us and/or lack of being able to get someone to help us. So when I realized that this was a new business ran by new people and read the positive reviews I quickly told my aquarium nerd husband. So we went in Saturday to get some fishies to add to our aquarium. Upon entering I noticed that this place was CLEAN and not cluttered like it was before. We were warmly greet right away by one of the gentleman behind the counter. He asked if we had any questions or needed any help and allowed us to roam when we told him we just wanted look first. While browsing fish I noticed the tanks were very clean and not overcrowded like many other aquarium stores. I also appreciated that they were very well organized. It was obvious where the fish were that we wanted for our tank vs more aggressive fish. I also respected that there were a few tanks marked "Not for Sale" which was later explained to us that the fish were newer and they like to wait 2 weeks to make sure everyone is healthy before putting them up for sale. While browsing we were checked in on a few times by staff. They asked us if we had any questions or needed any help. When we did ask questions we were given thorough explanations. I felt like we were getting honest answers vs just telling us what we wanted to hear so we would buy fish. Prices were also very reasonable. We walked away with some dwarf gourami's, some rummy nosed tetra and a clown pleco without spending a small fortune. We were shown their "baby" tank while we were checking out. They breed their own fish from time to time. I found this very amusing. They also shared how they managed to breed a beta fish. Very interesting and complicated! Cleanliness and organization were excellent. Selection and price are excellent. Customer Service was above and beyond. We definitely plan to make future purchases here and will recommend them to friends and family. read more

Upgrade tanks because I recently moved and I was a loyal customer of the fish store on Franklin Blv but they're temporarily closed and I came here to Splash and was not let down the store is smaller but doesn't lack anything, staff is very knowledgeable and always in a good mood to help and answer question and prices are very reasonable and they seem to take their water quality very serious. A gem of a fish store in what some would consider the ghetto. Relatively small store but a decent selection of both freshwater, saltwater fish, and corals. The equipment selection is a bit lacking. The prices are pretty good and you can find some good deals from time to time. There's a bit of a range as far as knowledgeable staff; it seems like the older staff have a wealth of experience while others just the very basics. More often than not you have to hunt down the staff in order to get them to help you. They give off the vibe of disinterest and stand-offness. They do appear to care for their livestock as I always see someone tending to them each visit. The majority of their livestock appear relatively healthy. Overall if you're in the area check them out for something you might be interested in but I wouldn't go out of my way to shop here. read more

I've been meaning to take time to write a nice yelp for Splash Aquarium and never got around to it but I bought some hillstream loaches today on my lunch break so it reminded me to write one! David is really kind, patient, and doesn't mind answering a lot of questions from new aquarists (which a year ago, I was and had A LOT of questions). Ever since going for the first time a year ago, I've gone there quite a few times. And, every time I go, it's a great experience. But, tbh everyone who works there is super nice. And, they take really great care of their fish. Both their salt water and freshwater section looks amazing and their show tank is so beautiful it makes me want to stop and just watch that tank for hours. It's a great place for new and more experienced people in the fish keeping hobby. They often have things that I can't find at petco or petsmart (regarding the fish they keep, supplies, fish food, aquatic plants, and hard scape) Just a friendly piece of advice for the nice women that helped me out with my hillstream loaches... it might be nicer to not tell someone who has hillstream loaches for a year and done so well at taking care of them that their loaches had babies... that "I just got lucky" but I know it was meant well and your heart was in the right place. I get that there is a common misconception about hillstream loaches "needing" low temperatures but as someone who has taken such good care of them that they accidentally got two babies out of it... and someone who has a degree in a field heavily related to fish keeping (biochem) there isn't enough data to say that they are reliant on cold temps to live. There is enough data to show that they live in shallow waters with fast streams which leads to more oxygen exchange in the waters then live in... and colder waters hold oxygen for longer. For newer aquarists this is fairly good advice bc if they have a hillstream loach in warmer waters, they would have to do more frequent water changes and/or have an air stone to keep the oxygen levels at a high enough concentration for hillstream loaches to be happy and healthy. I hope my feedback is well received. I gave this place 5 stars bc they are by far my favorite fish store still. I'm just really passionate about fact checking and making sure advice is proven to be true instead of hear say. read more

If I could give minus stars I would. We called ahead of time to make sure they were open on Mother's Day. The guy that answered said: Yes, but we close at 4:00 today We arrived at 3:45 to look. We went inside and all the tank lights were off. I said: All the lights are off! And the girl at the counter just looked at us and said: ummm yeah, we're closing at 4:00! It wasn't even 4:00 yet! We did a circle around and left. Other people that walked in were treated rudely as well. We will not return!!!! Horrible customer service! The staff that worked on Mother's Day need to be retrained on customer service and referral business!! read more

This is the best aquarium! The staff is so knowledgeable and eager to help. They are also very quick to answer the phone and never seeming to be rushed. The tanks are very clean and not over stocked. Fish selection is excellent, and I've only had to return one fish to them, But that was only because she was killing my community. They made the return seemless and easy. I've recently been here and bought 6 neon tetras and 4 rummy nose tetras and when they where in the bag i closely examined the fish and i saw they where fine and then i added them to the tank and when i woke up the next day boom one of the rummy nose tetras had ich, and before anyone says anything i tested my water and everything was fine so i waited two days to see if it was really ich and it was so i ran to the store and got ich-x and when i got back three of the neon tetras died and i tested my water again and everything was ok then i checked my temperature and it was good, this wasn't the first time that thus has happened, but there saltwater section is far more healthier then there freshwater section. read more

Diseased/Poor Quality Fish; not helpful, knowledgeable, nor nice employees This review is only for the freshwater side and from a hobbyist with 20 years of experience. This is unfortunate to write because I used to be a big fan of splash aquarium and have been coming here for 5 years. Recent experiences have made me change my mind about this business. My negative review of splash is because the quality of fish and employees are now poor, to put it mildly. The straw that broke the camels back is that I got some seemingly healthy looking false julii corys. Unfortunately though, they were carriers of either bacterial or viral hemorrhagic septicemia. A particularly nasty strain too. It killed 1/3 of my tank's inhabitants, including most of my beautiful adult male congo tetras. About 20 fish in total despite my best efforts to quarantine and treat. The worst part was when I told the employee there to alert them they have a problem in their tanks or with their suppliers, they hardly seemed to care and nothing seemed to have been done about it. They made their money I guess. And for the last ~5 times I've gotten fish from them some ALWAYS die. This suggests that they have diseases throughout all their tanks. I didn't have this problem with them a couple years ago. Next are the employees. The old employees were so nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. The new employees are none of that. They never seem happy to be there. They never offer to help and even after you ask for help they can be quite slow. Employees will often be on their phones or just sitting instead of helping you. And most annoyingly, they barely know what they're talking about. One time one of their employees kept referring to pH as salinity (and they even have a saltwater section so you'd think they'd know better). Another time I was told over the phone a certain fish was in stock just to show up in person and see that they were not. Whenever I ask intermediate level questions I get short uninformative answers I could've gotten from a 2 second Google search. I also brought in some plants for trade-in and was chastised for not bunching them myself beforehand when no such mention was made over the phone. When trying to get credit for some of my dead fish I was given grief over a 0.2 pH difference between my tank and theirs.... The knowledge of these employees are barely better than petco fish specialists but nowhere near as pleasant. You'd expect more from a specialty store. I give it 2 stars because the selection is decent, decent prices, and the owner (or at least longest tenured employee) is nice and helpful (unlike everyone else). Unfortunately there are no better alternatives in the sac area now. Aquaworkz permanently closed years ago, exotic aquarium is closed indefinitely (and potentially permanently), and reptile and aquarium depot is worse (at least splash has a 7 day guarantee on their fish, even if they can be combative about it now). If you ever have the chance, check out aqua forest aquarium in san francisco. It's geared towards planted tanks and has much healthier fish with much more knowledgeable and helpful employees. read more

We've been in the store twice now and their customer service is among the best! My husband recently converted our freshwater tank to saltwater. We visited 5 other aquarium stores rated highly on Yelp. That being said, Splash is our favorite. The store is very well kept and the employees are very vested in their fish. This place has great service! I came from Los Angeles for thanksgiving break and bought some high grade Crystal shrimp and tiger Shrimp. They packaged the shrimp extremely well and all 8 Shrimp made the 6 hour drive from sac to LA and and are all doing well in my tank. Great place for fish, shrimps, and plants. Very knowledgeable staff that provide excellent service. Will come back again when I am back in sac! read more

I read the reviews and drove around to a four other fish and aquarium stores. Hands down, Splash is the best place to go whether you are starting a new tank or have experience. You won't find a more attentive staff. I would suggest there is only one other store in the Sacramento area that offers a healthy and competitive fish selection but they fall short in the area of distance and customer service. I started a new tank (75 gallon) and looked to fill it with community fish. I am the kind of person who googles and reads as much as I can to as informed questions. I had some fish die and was continually testing my water. At the time ph and ammonia was perfect. I brought water in to be tested to make sure I was doing things correct on my end. I did receive a credit for some fish that died with 24 hrs. I had an ich outbreak and a wicked ammonia spike in the middle of that. I established a treatment plan for the ich and that was working well. I struggled with the ammonia and finally sought advice from Splash. The advice was spot on! My fish are happy and active and my water is testing perfect again! I find the staff to be very knowledgeable about its fish, and transitions from one tank to another, fish temperament, water, common problems and how to resolve them. read more

This store was the old Jojo Aquarium store. The new Splash Aquarium is about legit as a store gets! They have a large variety of livestock, both fresh and saltwater, and cater to several types of niche hobbies from discus to corals, to planted tanks and high-end bettas and everything in-between. They even carry some of the ADA line of goods including soil and tanks. What I really love about this store is that they take excellent care of their livestock, as all of their tanks look immaculate. None of the their tanks look over-crowded, and most everything looks healthy. The staff there are super friendly and chill always asking if you need help and to take your time browsing and enjoying the store. I live down in the South Bay, but always make it a point to visit Splash every time I'm up in the Sac area! read more
