Came here for s late night dinner today and ordered the Good fella spliff with Mac and cheese and a ginger ale. The mac and cheese came out cold, didn't even eat it. My partner is vegan so finding eateries that make us both happy are not so readily found. After seeing a play, we were starving and stumbled across Spliff's. Great menu! Place is kind of small and down to earth; no frills, etc. prices are very good and the bartender/waiter was super friendly. And the food? Excellent!! She had vegan; I had tri-tip and we both had super good Mac n cheese. And we found this place at 11 pm and the food was fresh and delicious! Definitely worth trying. read more

The area is obviously like anywhere in downtown JAX, a little sketchy; but it seems like it's a year or two away from being an awesome new area for downtown JAX. GastroPub? More like DisastroPub. Probably the worst food I've eaten in this city. Ordered a sandwich with the "braised Tri-tip steak", which was basically two thick slabs (maybe 1/2" thick) of chewy, flavorless cold beef on some bread. The meat was impossible to bite through, and the crappy plastic butter knife they provide couldn't cut it either. (Pro Tip for the kitchen staff: Take an extra five seconds and slice the meat into lots of very thin slices. It'll still be shitty, but at least it will be possible to actually eat it.) Not only did the food suck, the atmosphere sucked too. The place is drab and uninspiring. There was some asshat holding court at the bar (possibly an owner, definitely a regular) who had clearly been overserved, who bellowed a monologue about Jacksonville at a genuinely obnoxious volume level for the entire time we were there. (He was so loud and relentlessly loquacious that it made it difficult to even converse at our table 20' away.) Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I got the Vegan Sandwich! It was soooo good. It had To fur key, alfalfa sprouts, and whole lot of extra goodness piled high! It looked like one of those sandwiches from Instagram or Pinterest! I paired the sandwich with a cucumber salad that was filled with carrots, tomatoes, and onions drizzled with balsamic vinegerette! It was a very good vegan meal ! read more

The Mac and cheese here is to die for. Definitely a hidden gem in downtown jax. The portions are massive, and the Mac and cheese selection is extensive. I recommend either the classic Mac and cheese or the cordon blue. Great place to go if you're out late, and the patio out back is a nice bonus. read more

It's a Wednesday and I'm not from here. Strangely vacant and it look like I may have to get in the car to find food. Spliffs is open and seems like a decent choice walking in. Counter dude and I quickly work out a sammich and appetizer combo. Some of his favs and he was spot on. The weird rib wing things were awesome as a starter and the sammich wasn't huge, but very well thought out and delicious. This place is awesome. Very few seats and very many beers on tap. Probably not the cheapest sammich I've ever eaten but they did gastropub mantra proud IMO. Excellent choice for a casual and quick eat and chat. Stopped in because I read good reviews. I ordered a sandwich and was told they were out of pork belly. After looking over the menu, I ordered a different sandwich and was told they were out of another ingredient and couldn't make the sandwich. If this was know, we should be told up front instead of waiting to order. Poor management there. Was then told food would take at least 20 minutes cause they only had one person in the kitchen. I called in to make sure they were open on Memorial Day. It was pouring outside, and when we hopped out of our Uber to run inside - they had a sign on the door that said "closed to the public". So, now we're standing under an eve downtown with nowhere to eat. Big Boi was having a concert next door... I'll let you be the judge. Regardless, the 1 Star is for seeing a rat run up their cable connections behind the bar on another occasion. Last nights experience just sparked the motivation to make the review. Played at the venue next door and came over here for late night eats and beer. Ordered the steak sandwich with a side of Mac and Cheese. Order came up quickly and freshly prepared. Loved it. Wanted to give 4 stars but with very few people in the restaurant it took literally 45 minutes after ordering to get the food. There was no real urgency or concern either. Maybe they were short staffed since there was only one cook in the kitchen. The food was good but the hype for the level of satisfaction prior to getting the food didn't match the taste. It was good food but I would not say it was worth our wait time. If I came back to Jacksonville I would try another restaurant just for variety. read more

I had The Big Spliff sandwich and The Bowl of Green salad with chicken and thought both were great. The place is smaller, comfortable, and casual. Use Google to find it because it was right where Google maps said it was but I never saw a sign out front. Think they are working on that since they're still new. Cool and eclectic beer selection that I really enjoyed. The owner was tending bar, and both he and the cook were friendly and cool to talk with. Definitely a great place to grab a bite, beer, or both. BTW, there's a music hall next door owned by the same people, so if you are looking for that, might be cool. In town for a very short, intense, conference and stayed at nearby hotel. With no wheels and no energy for Ubering all over some town I'm not familiar with, I walked the couple of blocks to Spliffs for lunch and fell in love with a dirty hippie. No, wait, that's the name of the salad I had with some grilled chicken. Fresh, delicious, obviously made with love. At about 10 bucks, it was unbelievably good. Went back for dinner and tried the Shorty, a phyllo pocket of subtle bacon and shrimp deliciousness that came with a side of cucumber, tomato, and goat cheese salad that I would have happily eaten as an entree. Again, about $10. Despite the risk of looking like a complete stalker, I'd go back tomorrow for lunch if they were open. If the conference was longer, I'd eat my way through the entire menu. read more

A hot spot in an ever growing area! I love that they support local artists by filling their walls with the arts of several different locals. The Spliff's pockets at Gastro are simply amazing! The only downside is no vegetarian or just seafood option in that category even though in general they do have many no-meat options. The apple dipping sauce was a perfect companion for the shrimp pocket, I was very surprised! The mac and cheese was ok but I suggest adding a little salt and pepper. Colleagues and I were looking for a place to get a beer and sandwich before heading to the airport. This place was great! It's a tiny place, but the beer selection was not (decent selection of locally brewed IPAs and lagers) and the menu was exactly what we were looking for. I am a vegetarian, so I ordered "The Dirty Hippie," which is a kitchen-sink-kinda-salad. I had them make it as a wrap. It was delicious! Super tasty. My Neon IPA was also really good...nice and cold, hoppy, and a perfect match for broccoli, cranberries, and whatever the hell else was in that wrap. :-) Thanks! read more

Spliff's was a great place to grab a beer and a sandwich. Their on tap beer selection was great. I had the goat boy sandwich and it was delicious. I also had a side of Mac and Cheese which was tasty. You must have the habanero aioli with your sandwich if you like spicy food. I will definitely visit Spliffs once I visit Jacksonville again. read more

Awesome friendly place in downtown Jacksonville! Everyone is raving about the Mac and cheese and holy crap is it excellent, but I have to have the sandwiches! The big spliff with the habanero sauce is just fantastic and more than enough for one person. Get the side of Mac to go with. They also have a large range of craft beers with local brewers on draft. The staff is knowledgeable about what they serve and can certainly provide great recommendations. They have a great patio area out back when there is a good crowd. Really enjoyed hanging out here and meeting some new folks. A new must try for this area. read more

I was looking for an after hours spot that was still serving food and Spliff's came up. I have to say that the food exceeded my expectations , it was fresh and very tasteful . I had their pockets which were very good and my friend had the Mac n cheese which was amazing. The place is very welcoming and the staff is very friendly , definitely a place that I would consider revisiting. By the way, it was reasonably priced for the portions that you get. Food took nearly an hour to arrive (it was only a salad..) and was mediocre quality. Half the decent beers were gone by 11:30pm.

Very good food, a lot of thought put into the dishes and menu. Great beer selection on draft. Great staff and service. Highly recommended.
