I've brought my bikes in for a variety of work (tune-up, suspension maintenance, new pivots, etc.) and have always been happy with the quality of work and the quick turnaround time. In particular they found a cost-effective solution for a carbon seatstay on a Transition Sentinel that was out of warranty, which I really appreciated. It seems only fitting that here, in what's widely regarded as the birthplace of mountain biking, one should dine at a bike shop. Alternatively, it might also be apt that one could purchase a mountain bike while waiting for their food. Either way, Split Rock Tap & Wheel has you covered and I mean that quite literally. Their compact menu seems to include a favorite from every currently trending cuisine. Meaning what? Let's just say I very much enjoyed my Chicken Taco Salad (about $15) while my dining partner had similar feelings about his Lamb & Beef Shawarma. They have Banh Mi on the menu but everybody in the place seemed to be ordering pizza on the day I visited, many served topped with a salad-sized helping of fresh arugula. With a large, dog-friendly, covered, outdoor seating area Split Rock is a good choice when the weather is nice. They have indoor tables as well (no dogs allowed). Whether or not you arrive in biking gear, Split Rock's food and casual, clean ambiance are a nice addition to the Fairfax dining scene. I can't speak for the bike shop portion of the place but the food side seems to be serving up exactly what this community wants. read more

After putting in a few hours of vigorous Marin riding, my cycling buddies and I recently visited Split Rock Tap and Wheel to get a well deserved beer and some lunch. We had a mixed experience. Positively speaking, Split Rock offers a good selection of local craft beers on tap. The outdoor patio is spacious and a great spot to park your bike, relax and enjoy a cold brew with other cyclists. Additionally, the prices are pretty reasonable, which is always a good thing these days. Don't get me started on beer prices going north of $10 at other places. Unfortunately, the service was exceptionally slow, taking at least 20 minutes to place our orders, and another 25-30 minutes to receive our food. I was done with my beer by the time the food arrived and would have ordered another to pair with my food order but that long line was going nowhere. Yes it was a Saturday at 2pm so your experience may vary but it's no secret that Fairfax eateries catering to cyclists will likely get hit hard on weekends. The Cubano sandwich I ordered was pretty average and that may be a fairly generous assessment. If you are considering the Cubano - don't. My buddies fortunately had a bit better food experience than I did but still nothing to write home about. Maybe I should have stuck with the specials board but I always like to try Cubano's if they are on the menu. To improve the dining experience, I might suggest having more than one register taking orders. Or maybe have a register dedicated to beverage orders. Or if another register isn't possible, having a dedicated staff member helping the register guy out by just pouring beers. Hell, if people are drunk enough, the slow food services will seem trivial. Additionally, I'd recommend minimizing the menu to focus on a smaller selection of dishes (around 8-10) and ensuring that they are executed exceptionally well. Look no further than The Joinery in Sausalito for tips on that. This way, the kitchen can focus on perfecting a handful of signature items rather than spreading themselves thin across a wide range of choices. Finally, the lack of attention to clearing tables was noticeable. It would be beneficial for the servers to also have the responsibility of bussing tables upon their return trip from food delivery to ensure a clean dining environment. In conclusion, Split Rock Tap and Wheel has its strengths, such as the variety of local craft beers and a nice social outdoor patio. However, the slow service, mediocre food, and some operational improvements prevents me from suggesting a visit. It's a place that tries to do too many things, but perhaps it's time to focus on mastering a select few. read more

On our way back from the beach, I stopped here with my daughters for a Father's Day lunch. This was my first time here. This is also a bike shop, but that wasn't my goal today. I ordered the shawarma with beef and lamb. One daughter ordered the (beef) Bahn Mi. My other daughter ordered the meatball sandwich. I tried everything because it all looked so good. Everything was as good as it looked. The garlic dill pickle was very tasty. They have a very nice list of beers, but didn't get a chance to try any. Note: Most of the Covid restrictions were lifted a few days ago (June 15th), but most businesses (employees) still mask up. No one here appeared to be masked up. Just in case that matters to you. My daughter made the point that they should at least let people know that all employees are fully vaccinated. Had to take away a star for that. read more

The pizza is good and I like that you can choose between spicy and non-spicy sauce, especially since spicy sauce has eliminated some of our favorite pizza place options since we had spice-averse kids. We came for lunch at about 2pm on a weekday. I had skipped breakfast and was starving--the pizza, hot and fresh from the pizza oven--definitely hit the spot. I can imagine how it is the perfect meal for the cyclists stopping by post-Mt. Tam ride. The outdoor seating is nice and dog-friendly. The menu is small (I'm probably alone in wishing they also served coffee and something sweet), but enough to fill hungry cyclists and hikers. read more

After MTB in Bolinas we stumbled on this place because we were trying to go to the bike museum next door but they were closed. We walked in and saw not only were they a Specialized shop and repair but they also had food and beer! My bf's new Levo Pro was acting up while riding and the guy told us to just bring it in and he would link it up and check the diagnostics no charge and we could grab some food and drinks while we waited. Win and Win!! Not only was the bike service so nice, helpful and friendly, the food was also amazing. We got the Tamarancho pizza which was pretty spicey but good. It was topped with arugula which helped tone down the spice. My bf got the shawarma wrap which was also pretty amazing. We have since gone back again and got the Tamarancho pizza again. Next time I want to get the shawarma wrap again and try the bahn mi sandwich. read more

Where do I start with the Specialized Bike Shop or the brewery/ restaurant. My two worlds finally met under one roof. First of all I went in to see if my bike can get a little help - my Specialized e bike was throwing some issues with the electronics. The young man at the counter said bring it in I will plug it into the computer and see what's going on. While you wait you might want some food or a beer or both. So me and my girlfriend did just that. We had a chicken Mediterranean wrap, amazing, highly recommend. And since we think we are pizza experts we had to try the pizza. Wow, does this place throw down some good pie. I dont know which one we had but since then we have been back and had more pizza and yet again amazing pie. And while waiting my bike had a new download put in and it's good as new. Thank you and thank you for all your help. The place is super fun, great atmosphere, great service and very friendly and a great crowd of people. It's a must to try and specially if you are a mountain biker, pizza lover or just a great meal in a fun place. We will be back soon. read more

We used to come here when it was Fairfax Cyclery, and the staff was pretty awesome. Now they specialize in Whyte bikes and have a cafe that offers pizza and sandwiches, as well as a good selection of adult beverages and sodas --- and the staff are still petty awesome. Chill vibes, good tunes, cool decorative art, and plenty of seating are available. I was having dinner here with my husband a few days ago, and Ted King was having beers and pizza with his buddies! He's a retired professional cyclist, and just being in the presence of someone I honor and respect is pretty awesome. read more

Stopped in to check my chain wear and get a price on some service and they quoted me $450 to change pads and my chain which they said was worn and should be replaced. I was surprised because I have about 1600 miles on my bike and this sounded way high to boot. Guy also said I should plan 10% of the cost of my emtb in maintenance a year. So $750/year? I don't think so!! To double check my chain I stopped at another shop on my way home who measured and said my chain wasn't even halfway worn and the pad replacement would be a small fee. I don't trust anyone who would upsell me on service. So hard pass. read more

Excellent surprise! We are long time Fairfax residents but had not yet tried this place. On Labor day, it was lively but not overcrowded, and we found a table outdoors. We placed our order: 3 carnitas tacos, and an Asian chicken salad, plus a beer. The beer was very good. We waited quite a while for our food, but there was a nice laid-back atmosphere and the music was great (and not too loud!). The food was truly excellent. Bikes and Beer--a great combination! After a hard day bike riding, this spot was a welcome respite. I came for the beer and grub, but of course they have bikes and bike accessories on display as well. The day that I visited, I think they might have been training some new employees, but they are very friendly, and tried hard to make the customers happy. There are several groups of road bikers enjoying the hospitality and the beer when I visited. I thought the food was okay--I got a huge Philly Cheese sandwich--but I think the beer is the main draw. read more

Split rock is a GREAT idea: a bike shop + brew pub with food, but more importantly being in the Northern California bike capital of the world... a place to park your bikes inside. Focused on mountain bikes, but we saw plenty of road cyclists stopping in. Unfortunately, although a great idea the food falls flat. The pizza was almost inedible. Covered in oil and the frozen crust was caked in raw flour, while also burnt on the edges. How they managed this I am not sure. Hoping they get their act together food wise, but the beer selection and cans of wine will probably have us coming back regardless. Post b-ball game, skipped into this cool joint for a pint, chips, guacamole and salsa. Super limey and garlicky, just the way we like it. Killer 12 brews on tap, great music (nice sound). And fresh pizza! They also have sandos and salads. Get your bike gear and advice at same time. Cozy picnic tables. Chess, newspapers. Pooches not allowed. I had an awesome Saturday at Split Rock! It started with me getting my front tire mounted 10 minutes before closing at 6pm. The mechanic was super cool about me just dropping in. He took care of me right away and went the extra mile to clean the extra sealant off the rim. I was so impressed that I took my family back for dinner that night. I thought they only had beer and sandwiches, but they had a full menu of pizzas and salads too. We had a thin crust margarita and combo pizza and a Cesar salad that were all above expectations! I don't live close by, but since mikes stopped being a Specialized dealer, I had to go out to Split Rock for issues with our 2 Levo ebikes. I've been really happy with the service, especially the communication. And that goes for Specialized too. Both our bikes' motors went out within weeks of each other after 4 years and lots of miles. Split Rock got them ordered and fixed, and Specialized covered the motor replacement no questions asked. read more

Henry in the bike shop was a lifesaver! I had just bought my husband a Surly Wednesday e-bike conversion. My husband loved it until he went to ride it and the small sprocket from the derailleur fell apart and one of the washers went missing. I called on a Sunday, Henry answered and said he had some leftover parts and to bring it on in. In less than a minute he had the complete sprocket with washers. It was our first time in that bike shop, and we were very impressed. Henry was super nice and helpful. read more

Henry helped my in making my Specialized Stumpjumper Evo purchase this week. I did my research online but couldn't decide between the Stumpjumper vs. Evo- and Henry was able listen to my preference, he was knowledgeable and answer all my questions, and patiently got me fitted to the different bikes and sizes that ultimately helped me to make that final decision. He even fed my lunch and drinks while he got the bike ready for me, and gave be great deals on the rest of the gears that I also purchased. Great service, very knowledgeable, fast and attentive service and great selections (even though Specialized website says out of stock- give them a call, they have a good amount of inventory and selection on hand). The shop is open, bright and merchandize well displayed; definitely 5 star from me anytime! Oh and lunch was yummy too and they have a nice bar and large dining space open from indoor to outdoor seating. read more
