In a world stained by the sin of Man, survival depends on more than mere companionship. You also…read moreneed a sharp blade. At the Axe Pit in Clark's Pond Shopping Center of South Portland Maine, I found both. I first came upon the Pit a year ago during a lonely period in my life. For some time my work had taken me further from my family and my friends, and deeper into the cloudy ether of virtual life. I no longer knew what was real or contrived, and villainous illusions stalked me like shadows cast against the philosopher's wall. Eager to reclaim my tether to the physical universe, I approached the Pit warily. Although the name conjures images of an uncaring abyss, a crucible or testing ground for gladiators and mercenaries, the interior was immediately welcoming. A barkeep greeted me warmly and offered me a drink. The piney hops and sweet maltiness of the strong local ale mingled with the woodsmell of the target wall, and over the speakers a band of warrior-bards sang tales of chessboxing in old Shaolin. Against this backdrop my guide demonstrated the technique that would ensure my axe flew true. In the adjoining tavern room, people gathered around tabletop games of strategy, and in talking to these battle-scarred regulars I learned of those who master dungeons and chase dragons. It seemed there were nights for costumery, and nights for romance. Nights for parents to extend the hatchet handle to their teenaged children, and nights filled with live music. One night each week axe hurlers from across the southern Maineland convene to test each others' skill. When my blade struck its first bullseye, a cheer arose from staff and fellow patrons alike. I knew I had found a home of sorts, a refuge from the refuse fires burning beyond control all around us. Good people, strong spirits, and blades forged for the noble purpose of unity over cruelty and division. I returned the following week, and the week thereafter. I will undoubtedly make my way to the Pit again soon and I hope to see you there. Perhaps we might raise our glasses, clang the steel of our axe heads together and, rearing back, discover a new strength within ourselves that flows all the way from the tips of our fingers to the blood-red targets beyond.

The recently renovated bar has a wide selection of drinks, both alcoholic and non (including cocktails and mocktails). If you arrive early or want to stay past your hour, the lounge is stocked with a multitude of board games, both classic and modern. They even have retro-video games. The staff is fantastic. They are quick with their service, expertly break down the techniques of axe throwing so that anyone can throw. I even took my mother, who's in her 60s, and she had a wonderful time, even hit a bullseye! They host a weekly league on Thursdays from 7-9. It's a fun and welcoming community. All skill levels are welcome!
