Pretty cool restaurant with a nice bar area. After going over the longest bridge in the world. I felt some hunger coming on. It was quite a distance. So l told my husband let's bring up Yelp and find something in the area nearby and this restaurant wasn't far away at all. We decided to sit at the bar. The bartender James was very nice. He explained the specials and asked us if we wanted to dine as well. So we placed our orders for the food and drinks. The food arrived shortly after. They are very efficient. Everyone l encountered with was very polite. The food and drinks were just what l needed to get in my relax mode. The Catfish was crunchy. Seasoned just right and the Beef Brisket sandwich was some kinda good! We also both shared the Pork belly snack. Which was prepared with a touch of Korean style to it. There's a reason locals give Old Rail a perfect rating. It just so happens to be pretty much...perfect. I'll start with the superb service. I came in as soon as they opened. My waiter (wish I could remember his name, but he was a dark eyed blond haired cutie) was great. He brought out samples of the beers on the menu so I could decide what to have. He was such a sweetie it was hard not to slip him my number. Just kidding! But really, he was such a nice guy. The space is just absolutely gorgeous. After several trips to Old Rail, I decided to update my review. When I first visited there were the typical service issues that are expected at a brand new place. I am happy to report that those issues have been corrected and the last few times have been great. So great that I think this may be my new favorite restaurant on the North Shore. Old Rail is the first place of its kind on the North Shore. It is a true brew pub where the beer is brewed in house. If you sit in the bar area you can look through the giant windows and watch the brewers work or gaze in amazement at the stainless tanks. The brewing process is very intriguing, but the real reason I come is to drink it. Old Rail offers many different varieties of beer. I have tried nearly all of them, but my favorites are the Cow Catcher Milk Stout and the Echo Sierra Bravo (ESB). The Seven Sisters IPA is also great, but I cannot get over how good the other two are. Even if dark beer frightens you, try the Cow Catcher. It is incredible smooth. Trust me on this. The food has really improved from my first visit. Again, I have tried many different items on the menu, but a few dishes stood out. The French dip and the shrimp and grits are my favorite. I was never a French dip fan, but the description sounded so good I had to order it. It was the best version of that sandwich that I have ever had. I think it is the addition of the horseradish that made it so great. The shrimp were spicy, perfectly cooked and atop creamy grits. If I sound like I am gushing, it is because these dishes were that good. The one issue I have encountered is not their fault. Because it is new, and so good, the restaurant is frequently crowded. I have had to wait whenever I have arrived during peak times. They do have several comfortable chairs by the front door which I recommend if you do have to wait. The food here is is really good! I always enjoy the fried chicken sandwich, the fish and chips, peanut butter pie and the Irish nachos. They have a decent selection of standard beers and new ones on rotation. They had a watermelon gose, which was honestly the best beer I have had from them. The lack of artificial flavorings really does the trick. Almost forgot to mention the bloody Mary's with the honey bacon rim...amazing! The location is perfect, on the trace and across from the park. We were passing through the area and kinda fumbled our way into the place, and it turned out to be one of the best meals we've had in Louisiana! Wings were so crispy and juice. Their carrots and celery were pickled! Amazing. Small details that you see they care. :) Shrimp tamale was plated very unique - no mess on peeling the tamale cause there was no leaves anyways! It's like shrimp and grits' sister dish! Brisket burger and beer battered onion rings were ordered by a friend and it looked soooo good that I immediately regretted what I ordered after seeing that big plate brought to our table. Our table were raving about the pork belly - with a Korean twist. Too bad I don't eat pork belly... but it looks awesome! Buffalo mac and cheese was genius in a way that the buffalo chicken and sauce was at the bottom, topped with mac and cheese with blue cheese. So how much of a buffalo feel you want, you can do it!! My wife and I had visited this place about two years ago under its old name and the food at the time was nothing special so we never went back. However, we noticed it was closed for a while and then reopened recently as Spoke & Barrel. A friend of ours said it was pretty good so my wife and I decided to drop in and give it a try. We immediately got a great impression from the waiter who was very pleasant and seemed like a legit professional. We were also very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The burgers were top notch - my wife and I decided on the spot that we now have a favorite burger place. Good place on the trailhead. The atmosphere is cozy and just what you'd expect from a modern brewery. The Bloody Marys are tasty, but a little overpriced, especially for Sunday Brunch. They charge for the Sriracha vodka, but honestly I could have had regular vodka and the whole thing wouldn't have been 8.50. Next time I know! The service was pretty good and fast but could have been friendlier. The brunch options were good. I had the Salmon Benedict which is salmon dip on a biscuit with the traditional Benedict poached egg and hollandaise. It was really good. The chicken biscuit was massive, but that cheddar biscuit sure was tasty. The shrimp benedict was hard to eat because the shrimp came tail-on. That one was a little disappointing but still had good flavor. It's just hard to eat properly. Grits and grillades had good flavor but weren't like any we've seen before. It was more like shredded beef than what I know as "grillades." There were a TON of kids there. So that's the only thing that wasn't quite "brewery" like. It's a popular place for families on Sundays, so keep that in mind. Good flavor overall. I also wish they had more outdoor seating in the sunshine! read more

Best brewery food I've ever had, and I've been to a lot of breweries. I liked that they had the stereotypical pretzels but they were elevated. Soft and doughy. Perfect for dipping in the delicious mustard and cheese sauce. And the boudin balls - crunchy on the outside and filled with flavor as they use either their pulled pork or brisket in the boudin rice. The Irish nachos were good, but most in our group would have preferred chips to the fries. The beer was real tasty. We had a delicious Saison, a Tangerine Gose (similar to a blue moon IMO), Panoramic Milkshake IPA (AMAZING), Postcard IPA (AMAZING), and one other gose that was really enjoyable but I don't remember what the flavor overlay was. Oh well, I guess that means it was a good day, right? We'll definitely be back to check out new brews as available! read more

So this one is long overdue. My wife has family in the Northshore area and we first stumbled onto Old Rail Brewing about 5 years ago while visiting. Since then we have been coming back whenever we visit. We were recommended to Old Rail Brewing when we first tried to go to the Barely Oak, which is a nice looking bar, closer to the lake owned by the same people. A bar which doesn't allow kids. We have some of those so we tried out the Old Rail instead. We (including the kids) like good food, and even though Louisiana is a world food destination, it has been surprisingly difficult to find good food in the Northshore and Hammond areas, especially for a non-local. Following the post- Katrina suburban flight from the city to the Northshore area, disgusting, bland, freezer-to-fryer, corporate chain restaurants have popped up like weeds everywhere. It's more than a little sad to see what small amount of unique country culinary culture there was, drown in a sea of corporate swill. Thankfully, Old Rail Brewing is not some corporate food trough, or weekend tourist trap. Old Rail Brewing is your, more or less, standard brewpub with a respectful nod in the direction of gastropub. Its menu has, more or less, exactly what you expect for a brew/gastropub, with the following caveat: Where a gastropub's menu will tend toward the often overly inventive method of making classic comfort food dishes, the Old Rail does those dishes a more traditional way with more common, but high quality ingredients plus the ubiquitous Louisiana standards; andouille, boudin, oysters, gulf shrimp, crawfish, crab, and grits. And that is the key here. The Old Rail isn't doing anything super revolutionary, they are just doing it right by doing the classics at a higher level with better and higher quality ingredients, and that makes all the difference in the world. AND their service is great too. I will say that in the last couple of years the atmosphere vibe seems slightly more family and less upscale gastropub, which is unfortunate, but the food still excellent, and the beer is very good also. AND their servers seem to to have actually tasted their food and drink and are knowledgeable enough about it to be able to answer questions when asked. read more

This visit would have been excellent if the server would have asked the people next to us to control their kids (nice tactful way to accomplish that). The parents sat in one booth and let 6 kids 7-10ish have their own booth. The kids were yelling at each other, making vomit noises while other people tried to eat, running around the restaurant, climbing all over the empty booth behind us, and leaning in to our booth... The server apologized, but did not ask the parents to handle their kids... if you want to have a pleasant experience here, ask to be seated at the bar. read more

Perfectly placed along the Tammany Trace, Old Rail Brewing is a perfect rest stop while riding up to Covington. A huge selection of beers and food but the star here is the burger. It is excellent with flavor and cooked to perfection. They have house made fries or chips I recommend the chips if your a chip person they are great. They also have big salads and some local items. I ordered the house special burger which was stuffed with pimento cheese and jalapeño topped with bacon and hot sauce on a Hawaiian roll. When riding the Trace this is a must stop. read more

During a recent jaunt to the Northshore, I had a hankering for good food and good beer. Where else but Old Rail Brewing? We stopped in during a big LSU game, and we were pleased to discover that no one here cared about the game. The place wasn't overly packed and we were seated quickly. As I looked over the menu, I decided to start with a Seven Sisters IPA. It was quite tasty and not heavy at all and made for a perfect start to the experience. For an appetizer we decided to start with the Bleu Chips, which are chips topped with melted blue cheese. They weren't anything super special, but they really hit the spot because we were starving. For my entree I got the shrimp and grits. Now, if you follow my reviews, you know that shrimp and grits is one of my all time favorite dishes. This particular dish came with heads off shrimp with grits, okra and cauliflower. The shrimp were delicious and the sauce they were in was amazing. I would have liked it if there were more grits and if they were a bit creamier. I had to mix the sauce into the grits in order to have them not be as stiff as they were. I personally like my grits really creamy, but you might not. While not the best shrimp and grits I have ever had, this was definitely a solid dish. After dinner we decided to stick around for a while and try some more beer. I got the Pumpkin Express and, on a friend's recommendation, their Cow Catcher Chocolate Milk Stout. The pumpkin beer was perfect- not too much pumpkin taste and just enough spice to not be overwhelming. The chocolate beer was out of this world! I am a huge fan of chocolate beers and I love stouts. This beer delivered on both levels and managed to be smooth and flavorful without being too heavy. All of the beers I tried here were definitely "wins". Don't judge me, but we did so much chit chatting after dinner that we ended up with a bit of an appetite again. We ordered a small side of mac and cheese to munch on. The carb/cheese combo definitely hit the spot and I loved that they were generous with the cheese. All in all I loved it here and I would definitely return if I found myself in the area. Ordered the loaded Nachos which were French fries topped with cheese, jalapeno peppers along with other toppings, but what took this dish to a whole new level was the brisket on top.
