We were in McKinney for the first time and we were told to check out Spoons. This restaurant has such a cozy feel when walking in and the area it is is a perfect spot to view the beautiful downtown McKinney. We ordered the fried pickles for an appetizer. My 1.5 year old ate more of them then I did. They were definitely a hit. I had a burger and I believe my husband had a brisket sandwich. The food was great! Our server was so sweet and nice. This place deserves negative stars. Was refused a table in the Garage because we had our two children with us. They say they're 'Adults Only' but the sign on the door says '18 until 9 pm' which implies thru 18 until the posted time. When I mentioned this to the manager, her very rude response was 'but you were told it's adults only!' I can absolutely appreciate an adult only establishment but this was NOON on a Friday during downtown McKinney's family holiday event; every other establishment is open to families at this time. Not to mention, a family walked in at the same time as us with their obviously under 18 teenage daughter who was allowed to stay. It's obvious they had something against families with small children. They had a sign on the door advertising an extensive list of roles they were looking to feel. It's obvious they have bad management which is a reflection of bad ownership. Good riddance. read more

Delicious and unique coffee flavors and friendly staff. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu but expect to wait a while if you come on a sunday. read more

Before we recently moved to McKinney, I had ridden my bike by this restaurant many times and the good food smells always made me hungry so I wanted to give it a try! This is a great, casual, friendly place. The food is straightforward food at a reasonable price. I think that this will become a goto place for us to get breakfast food at dinner time. If you want fancy, high end food, this is not the place for you. Our server was pleasant and efficient. And, yes, the doors were opened for us with a smile, going in by one of the other patrons, and going out by one of the hostesses. Great breakfast place! There is a wait because of how good the food is. My son loved the chicken strips so much he had us place a second order for more. The omelets are great and filling the potatoes on the side really complete the hearty meal. Do not order the pancakes they were bad but you can't be perfect. read more

Icing is a food group. It's that little triangle at the top of the food pyramid. I know it says "Oil & Fat" but what they really mean is "BUTTERCREAM ICING!" And that's the problem I have with Spoons. They supplied the cake for the hungover bridal tea. The cake itself was okay. Better than a mix, not as good as some others I've had. But the icing was a flop. Yes, I know proper women do not really eat the icing--when have I ever aspired to be proper?! NEVER. I'm an icing eating gluttonous slob and I will eat my icing and any left on unattended plates near mine. The icing tasted like a powdered sugar brick. That was it. And though it was soft enough to chew I'm pretty sure it was hard enough to mold a to-scale David. Hmmm...to-scale David made out of buttercream icing...that would be photo worthy, kinda like the butter statues at the State Fair. read more

Service - 2 Stars Food - 3 Stars Cuteness and City Square Factor - 4 Stars Really Ugly Courthouse on the Square - 1 Star Historic McKinney Downtown. Really cute, except they could use a better looking courthouse. The are some really great looking courthouses in Texas, this isn't one of them. This place sits on the southwest corner and you should know there are free city lots about a block off the square in almost any direction, because there's not much parking on the street. Nice little place, sat outside under an umbrella at a somewhat rickety table and watched the crowds come and go. This place was packed all morning and into early afternoon. So it was certainly popular and probably doesn't need a review from me to stay in business. However, I intend to have my say, anyway. My wife just had a scone, they had several flavors available. She said hers. a brown sugar cinnamon, was delicious.($2.50). Sometimes they are too dry, but not this one. Moist throughout. My wife could have eaten a hundred more. (I'm a little skeptical, 90 maybe, but a 100?) I had a three-egg Western Omelet ($7.95) that was very tasty, and came with a few Cottage Potatoes and a pick-your-bread side of toast. The pan-fried potatoes had a good flavor and nice seasoning, but I had to catsup them up, nonetheless. My son had a Breakfast Taco of eggs and migas inside a large flour tortilla, ($8.99) and thought it a bit spicy. Hey, they're Migas! They're supposed to by spicy, right? They are a bakery and had all kinds of cakes and pies and stuff. We had the coconut cream pie $3.25) and the strawberry cake ($4.25). The very large slice of cake was almost too sweet to eat and had lots of frosting. Needless to say I loved it! The coconut filling in the pie was awesomely custardly coconutty. Wasn't thrilled with the whipped cream topping because it wasn't sweet enough to pair well with the custard. The crust was good, though. Now what keeps this place at a three star instead of four? The service. I really don't think it was the waitresses fault, but they seemed overloaded and we had to wait for more coffee and tea. Maybe it was because we were outside. I wanted butter and jelly for my toast, but gave up waiting and ate it dry. Same problem for my wife with her scone. Can't they bring butter in a little dish or some preserves? If I have to wait to ask for them the stuff, its too late! Eggs cool down quickly, you know. All in all, we liked it and will go back again but hope for more waitresses or will sit inside. read more

Great location across from the McKinney Performing Arts Center, smack dab in the middle of McKinney Square. We came here around noon on a Sunday and only had a 10-15 minute wait for a table. Sandwiches were good, the pasta salad was good, the black pepper french fries were good, and the pies were dee-lish! Key lime and buttermilk, we loves you! My favorite part? Tried Spoons for the 1st time today. Our service was great, very attentive, prompt with our drinks and food. We ordered Black pepper fries as appetizer, they came out quick, I was expecting more of a black pepper flavor and the description stated it would come with spicy ketchup but it did not we got double ranch instead. I ordered the Big Tex: pimento cheese, jalapeno and bacon panini, I was less than impressed no real flavor and the middle was cold. My lunch partner ordered the BBQ sandwich, she barely ate it stating it tasted like a sloppy Joe. We both ordered Mac and Cheese as a side it looked great very cheesey and creamy, but had a bland taste. We will give Spoons another shot. They have an extensive menu and will just try something else. read more

I was in town with the in-laws visiting McKinney to see if it was a viable place for them to move to. We had heard this "Spoons" place was pretty good and decided to check it out. There were four adults and my one and a half year old son. The staff seemed pretty friendly and the atmosphere inside was interesting and fun. My biggest recommendation to this place is to only go if you have a ton of time to kill. I posted our arrival on Yelp as a "check in" and went back to see how long we had actually been waiting for our food to show up. Forty Five Minutes! Seriously, why does it take so long to prepare a meal? Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep a toddler occupied when he's hungry for forty five minutes? I can see why this place is liked by the locals. The food is pretty good, but the service from the kitchen really leaves something to be desired. We will never return to this restaurant. Terrible service, food tastes just OK but very overpriced, AND an automatic 20% gratuity amount added to the bill for parties of 5+! When we examined the bill we wondered why the tip was so high. Curiosity then tried to figure out how the tip was calculated. We noticed the tip was added on for us BUT it just didn't make sense for a couple of reasons-- 1. We certainly would NOT have given such a generous tip for the service (or lack thereof). AND 2. The amount calculated for the tip was the result of an odd percentage. Funny thing is that this is when the server told me about the 20%, so since we already tried using that %, for kicks I went back to the table and rechecked the numbers. Apparently, the restaurants "automatic" calculation was off by about 3%. We were so bothered by the "good service ASSUMPTION" that we decided not to point out the poor math skills.The calculation came to about 17.3% or something odd like this. If you still choose to go eat at this restaurant I strongly suggest you check out this calculation--just for kicks! This place is totally overrated. Otherwise I hope you have a better experience than we did. read more

Meh. I don't see why McKinney-ites are so into this place. Yeah, the cool vintage look is neat but it's always packed and the little tables are crammed together. The food is ok. Just sandwishes and soups. They have a breakfast buffet on weekends I think but it's kind of bland also. Eggs, bacon, etc. (Not very exciting.) Yet, I still go here occasionally... when I feel like an overpriced sandwich and being crammed next to some squawking McKinney milfs. read more

Such a quaint and homey place... love the atmosphere and from the business, it seems that much of Texas agrees with me. Who doesn't get excited about giant pink cupcakes!? No frills on the menu selection here, but the quality was solid. Verbatim quote from the boyfriend was "don't know if I'm really hungry but... the food is great!" We ordered - $32 bill: - chicken quesadilla = chunky pieces made it seem more like a flattened fajita, only comes with salsa, tastes great. - spoons Reuben = I assume it was yummy since it was the original inspiration of previously mentioned quote - pick me up panini = I heart provolone cheese and horseradish so through the transitive property, I very much hearted this too. - soup pumpkin = this was amazing !!! - soup charro beans = appreciated that it was not over spiced, but could use more bacon. - key lime pie = texture felt very homemade, but just OK. Service was fine. I did notice a small group of wait staff gathered near the back on my way to the bathroom, but was much too absorbed in the awesome live band and in my own conversations that I did not notice any "smack talk" mentioned in previous reviews. read more

Spoons is a very cute little spot on the square in McKinney. When we first walked in I noticed one thing in particular...it smells like bacon. I love bacon so this smell was good with me, but it does kind of attach to your clothes for the rest of the day, like Subway bread. Anyway, there is a list of healthy and not so healthy items. I went with the soup and salad combo. I had the vegatable chicken soup and the Santa Fe salad. The soup was very good but the salad was honestly passable. Everyone else seemed to be very happy, especially those that ordered the grown-up grilled cheese. Darn it for trying to be healthy. One of my co-eaters/workers grabbed a platter of cookies to go and I tried the fresh out of the oven treats. These cookies are so good, I considered five stars for them alone. But, then I remembered our aloof waitress...so nah, three stars it is. I will definitely be back but next time, I will know what not to order. read more

Well I guess I have to try out a spot to know that it is not how I want my restaurant to be run. How is it possible to have pretty much a very full staff yet nothing is getting done? Oh man, let me count the ways. Setting the scene; Sunday brunch, 7 of us, 4 adults 3 kids (not high hairs) keep in mind all of the adults are service industry. We all know that it is vday, it's busy, we have a semi large party. WE GET IT. We didn't expect to be grandfathered in at all, we actually talk and catch up on ours lives while we are waiting. I give my name to the oblivious hostess and let her know we have 7 people and we will sit on the roof as long as we can get service. No smile no acknowledgment, nothing. With a grimace purse she asks my name and says 30 minutes. Luckily I can put two and two together and realize that's 30 minutes til we get seated, gotcha. Words hard. We wait outside, wait for our party to complete and I walk in to let the seating magician know that our party is complete. Once again, grumpy lets me know it's still 30. 30 what? .. Anyway moving on. 45 minutes (uh huh) later we were seated. I'm pretty sure we were the table that was lost in the Rock Paper Scissors shuffle because wtf happened. Our server came by and took our drink order. 15 minutes later and three different people delivering one drink at a time and two drinks forgotten we finally can cheers. Many moons later we get to order food. Long story short, ugh, it was cold, not good. Once again plates were delivered two at a time, and they forgot a meal. Damn y'all. By the time we get our food our drinks are empty (the adult ones) no offers for refill, nothing. When we slowly pushed our food around on our plates and passed bits of food to the forgotten person at our table, we are finally offered refills, gooooooodness. These also came one at a time by different people. At this point we asked for the check and split between the couples, not hard considering we were split right down the middle. That shit came so fast I blinked and the check was there. Mind blown, how did this get here so fast? Well that's because it was wrong. We asked said server to take off the food that we did not receive and to correct the bill. After the wrong items were shifted around we were over it. I guess asking for a to go box three times was overwhelming and can clog the brain. So the bill. We received gratuity. Not a big deal. 20% not a big deal. However when I don't receive 20% worth of service or even 10% of service I'm peeved. I understand gratuity, I applaud it. However give me the damn service that goes with it. All In all, don't expect anything. If you feel like wasting time, money and your patience then go here. read more

As soon as I was seated I noticed coffee stains and syrup all over the table from the previous customers. I requested to sit at another table, again notice syrup stains on that table as well. One of the kids requested bacon for his breakfast and it was not even warm. It had looked like it was sitting out for awhile. He did not even bother trying the bacon. The waitress asked if I would like anything besides coffee I said no thank you as soon as I said that she grabbed the menu and chucked it to the previous dirty table I was sitting at. Not gonna lie - i enjoy this place a bit more than I probably should. This has become my go-to place on the square and I plan on going back for many more dining experiences. Spoons is on the corner of the square in downtown McKinney (see other reviews for commentary on how cute the square itself is) - parking is generally a pain, but there is a public lot just down the street from their location. There's almost always a wait, but it does seem to move pretty quickly. This is not fine dining by any stretch, but the food is great - it's basically what your mom or grandma would make if they were a pretty fabulous (and sometimes creative) chef. The menu is extensive with breakfast being served all day. The hubby and I personally enjoy their breakfast/brunch - the food is fresh, tastes great, and is not a budget killer. On the weekend, they also offer a breakfast buffet which has all the basics and is perfect if you want some of everything. The lunch/dinner menu offers everything from salads, to paninis, to comfort-food classics like chicken and waffles. So far we haven't had anything that did not meet our expectations. Service is friendly and good, to be honest it's pretty much exactly what I would expect at this type of place - drinks are refilled regularly, servers are friendly, but nothing I would describe as "exceptional". Overall I would definitely recommend Spoons for a low key meal with the family (or friends). We have happily added it to our regular rotation! read more

Maybe my expectations were just too high? Eh. We came in pretty much right after they opened on a Saturday morning. We're quickly seated, brought over our drinks and our order was taken with no wait. Downhill goes the rest of the experience... Requested the toast early in order to tie over my son until the meal was brought out, that didn't happen until right before the actual meal was delivered and it wasn't because the order was cooked so quickly. I wish I could say the food was great but it was underwhelming. Not a whole lot of flavor and for "Vegetarian Migas" which had mushrooms there weren't a whole lot of mushrooms. Oh well. So once the food was brought over our server never came back to check on us, didn't offer refills, etc... It's easy to start picking at things once you're not happy, like a sticky table and so on.
