While walking through downtown McKinney, my husband and I stopped into Spoons Café for lunch, and it was a treat. The place has the feel of a vintage café -- the kind that might have been around in the 60s or 70s -- with a warm, nostalgic atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and stay for awhile. We were greeted right away and seated quickly. The menu offered plenty of classic comfort dishes, and everything we tried was delicious. The strawberry cake is a must have - if sweets are your thing. And most deserts are made in house. The service was friendly, and the overall vibe felt genuine and welcoming. We left full and happy, already talking about what we'll try next time. The food here is well worth it. The serving amount is great & the taste is even better. The customer service could be better. I will say, along with the food being great we keep coming back because not only is the owner great but she has one amazing server-Christina! ASK FOR CHRISTINIA! She is truly amazing. The only thing I wasn't happy with about the other service was when I came in (8 months pregnant) with 2 young boys on my hand, I asked for a table while waiting on my husband to park the car. The hostess told me everyone needed to be there so I needed to wait in the waiting area. I could definitely understand if it was packed but this day it wasn't & there were more than enough empty tables. Being that far along in pregnancy you just want to sit down comfortably & just start sipping on something cold to drink while you're waiting anywhere. Came here with my family to enjoy a good lunch and service. They have a large picture of "D Magazine" claiming that they are good. That's certainly not accurate. I did like the old feel to it, with old brick throughout interior. Made you feel like you stepped back in time. However, service was poor. As new customers were walking in, including my family, they would sit us down at a dirty table and ask if we wanted it wiped clean. That's very unprofessional and I'm surprised the health department hasn't paid them a visit. The pink rose cake looked very creative and delicious on the display. Food was good and service was fast. Can't beat these prices for what you are getting. Everything was fresh and the portions are large. Love the double layering of bread in the Classic Club. Guac was exceptionally good and fresh. We sat on the patio which was really nice. It is a cute spot in a cute town. Service was rushed. Our waiter took our order, gave our food and never came back. My lady and I were on a Saturday day trip To McKinney to check out a car show in downtown. Needed some ac & some food. There it was, Spoons Cafe, walked in and met with a smile and a welcome, the place had old school general store slash diner vibe, had to wait a bit for a table, remember there was a car show outside and it was 100 degrees outside. Once seated waitress was on point. I had the Low Rider panini sandwich, my lady had a BLT, yes car show, Low Rider sandwich. It was great, fresh & tasty. Walking around McKinney in the old downtown area is an experience in and of itself. While doing so, we came upon what appeared to be a hotspot on the square, that is Spoons Cafe. Any place that sucks cannot draw crowds like these folks draw, so we came in to give them a try! Walking in you are taken by the history that these brick walls and wooden ceilings must have seen over the years. There is an ambiance of yesteryear. Though it was afternoon, I was thrilled to see they serve breakfast all day. I always wonder why more places don't do that, it just seems basic, but I digress... I ordered a waffle, bacon and egg. Spoons Café in Historic Downtown McKinney is an absolute gem! The portions are huge, the prices are economical, and the food is consistently fantastic. I ordered the pancakes and they were excellent--fluffy, buttery, and perfectly cooked. Breakfast comes with two eggs cooked just how you like, plus a choice of sides: cottage potatoes, sliced tomatoes, or grits. I ordered the Chicken Salad Plate and my friend got it as a sandwich. Both were great, but I have to say mine won! A coworker recommended we try Spoons Cafe and we're glad we finally had a chance to check it out. We came for lunch on a Sunday in December. There was a lot going on downtown that day so parking was a bit of a premium. It was a beautiful day so we didn't mind a bit of a walk. We ordered two items to share: The Big Tex Panini with Tomato Basil soup and the Santa Fe Salad. The panini was such a treat with the pimento cheese, jalapeños, and bacon. Picking the soup as the side was the perfect combo. It was basically like a Texas variety of a delicious grilled cheese and soup for dipping! The salad had a good portion of the chicken and it was nice to already have it shredded with the other ingredients. The ambiance of Spoons features the history of the downtown area with an old cafe vibe. We had an event in the Garage. It was under staffed. We were told there would be a bartender but you had to wait on the one waitress for drinks. The food came out cold. This was disappointing for the Bride and Groom. We had order chips and salsa for the appetizer but we did not get that. The wedding cake was melting so we had to wait to cut the cake while they repaired which resulted in having to pay the photographer for extra time. We had told them the number of people we expected but we had less. I had asked earlier if this happened what happened. I was told they would take a head count and charge accordingly. That did not happen. We were charged for the number we estimated not for the number of meals they served. I wished now that I had got all of this in writing. When we were ready, we were seated promptly and our server was friendly and attentive. The food came out quickly and the portion was large. We both ordered the migas. "King Ranch Chicken Casserole $15.00" Sat. 12-6-25. The only thing that was King Ranch Chicken Casserole about this was the chicken. This had to have been thrown together in 10 seconds, and this had to have been made with a bechàmel sauce too. This was nothing remotely similar to traditional KRC casserole. This was roughly half chicken and half green bell peppers. The green bell peppers were raw. I had to hunt around to find any onion. There were only a few bits of tomato. The chicken was whiter than me. The whole dish was bright white and bright green. The only flavor was chicken and raw green bell pepper. To add to insult, the only tortillas were the tortilla chips it was served on. Overall, this was just a sad version of chicken nachos. Maybe this is a version from somebody that hasn't lived in Texas long or somebody that just hasn't had the pleasure of eating an authentic KRC casserole? It's just all surprising. A classic casserole dish from a cozy little diner on a cold winter's day sounded nice. Casseroles are also inexpensive, easy to make, and serve many, so I'm not sure why this was not a casserole. Why not cook this ahead of time and heat to order? I don't think anybody ordering casserole at a restaurant expects it to be cooked to order. Before leaving this review, I took time to google images of KRC casserole to make sure I'm not spreading misinformation, and nearly every picture looked like all the KRC casseroles I've ever eaten. I didn't see any picture like this on the internet. Now for those concerned I did nothing about my displeasure at the time and did not take a photo: I was starving. I was also being treated by my local in-laws who love Spoons. In one last attempt to hopefully leave the reader with no questions, I did ask those I were dining with if they recommended the KRC, but they said they had not tried it. I put a lot of tabasco on this and it ate okay. Some meals aren't great, but fill you up, so it's okay. I took a chance, and now I know. I just want those that do enjoy traditional KRC casserole to have an understanding of what this is like, and to not go into it expecting a traditional KRC casserole. read more

They charge a fee for using a credit card. Attention restaurant owners: we find hidden fees to be slimy. Up the price of your items by 50 cents. Also, this place is extremely tight inside and the bar is extremely small. I'll go back to try it again and I'll update this review when I hear they stop the slimy practice of add fees. read more

We went to a pizza place off the square and it had a 45 min wait and we were on a timeline so we walked into Spoons ... now I know why. Nice atmosphere with a cozy feeling. The waitress recommended the meatloaf and said the burgers were good so that's what we got. We first got fired pickles and those were tasty. The meatloaf was average no real flavor nothing special. But the $16 burger that I confirmed would be medium with a little pink came Out burned, layered with other burned pieces and no other flavoring to make it worth getting. Freddys burger are way better I think the waitress knew because her and the other waitress sat at the bar chatting it up with the cute bartender and yelled out to the first waitress when she went to check on her table, loud enough for us to hear... can you check on my table ? We stopped by Spoons Café the Sunday before Christmas with our daughter, son in law and grandsons. We called ahead and we only had a 10 minute wait. We had some Christmas shopping to do in downtown McKinney but we decided to have lunch first. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We also had prompt service which we appreciated. Several of us had the chicken tenders which were especially tastey, they came with 2 sides. Neat spot for lunch! This is located in the downtown McKinney area. Sandwiches, breakfast items, and chicken fried steak oh my! I saw a lot of pictures of mac & cheese but I was not overly impressed. My mother really enjoyed the tomato soup that came with her sandwich. My mom decided to try the peanut butter cookie. No need to do that again. Clean restrooms. Staff is efficient. I guess the food is edible. But if you want to enjoy what you're eating and enjoy yourself while you're eating, go somewhere else. My husband and I both ordered the Eggs Benedict because we know what we're about. Breakfast potatoes were sufficiently crispy but flavorless. Hollandaise sauce had no bite, and the poached eggs were way overcooked. Like the yolk was solid. You'd think for the amount of time they let the food overcook, it'd be hot when it got to you. But that wasn't the case. The service was fine but there was a little bit of "the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing" situation going on, so that was a bit inconvenient as well. We enjoyed the food, ambiance and feeling of grandma was cooking lunch for us. I was glad the suggestions previously mentioned about eating at the Garage instead of Spoons. It is essentially the same menu and kitchen but more of a bar atmosphere. I had the chicken fried steak which was superb. I really enjoyed the fries and macaroni. To top it all off they give you a slice of garlic toast that is to die for. My kids went with the adult grilled cheese meals that had plenty of cheese and taste with a cilantro spread. I wish I would've read reviews first. Our server was really sweet, but unfortunately that's the only positive thing I can say. Food was super bland, and nothing special at all. We went here for a late lunch today. The food wasn't bad and my daughter and I were discussing coming more often. Then...things went completely south when we had finished our meal. After waiting an inordinate amount of time for our check, I found the waitress on my way to the restroom and gave her my credit card and asked her for our check. When I returned from the restroom still no check, she continued to ignore us and didn't bring the check. Finally, she came back to the table next to us (which was not even occupied when I gave her the card) so I asked again for the check. She told me she'd get to it in a "minute". At this point I forcefully told her we had to go. Several minutes later she finally brought the check and a pen that had no ink to sign it. We struggled through and got it signed. As we were walking out the door she said "Doesn't look like you're in a hurry to me". Clearly our business isn't important to her so we won't be back.
