Union Bear has quickly become one of my favorite spots in downtown McKinney. The fact that they brew their own beer right there on site is a big part of the draw for me. I am not usually a dark beer guy but the server talked me into their schwarzbier and I ended up ordering a second one. If you are into porters and stouts they have you covered, and if you lean lighter there is plenty on the board too. The food held its own right alongside the beer. I went with the burger and it hit exactly the way a good pub burger should, juicy with a solid char and fries that actually get finished. My wife ordered the pappardelle on a recommendation from the table next to us and she was not sharing much of it, which tells you everything. We started with the chips and queso and cleared the bowl before the entrees even landed. Great vibe inside, big patio, and the service kept our drinks full the whole time. Tried Union Bear for the first time a few weeks ago with my partner. We went for dinner on their patio. Our server was a total sweetheart, and our food didn't take too long to come out. We had the burger and fries, grown up chicken tenders, and a few beers. Dude the tavern burger was really filling! I don't know where they get their ground beef, but it's definitely fresh, more fresh than Culver's for sure. That beef is the real deal! I'm from Westchester County in NY, I know good food. I lived and breathed top notch food, this place meets that expectation, and actually exceeds it. They have cocktails too obviously being a brewery, and it was legit. It's all fresh, legit, well made, and I get to have fun times with my family and friends here. Great experience at Union Bear Brewing Co. Customer service was on point. Our waitress checked on us just enough without smothering us. I'm not a fan of constant interruptions while eating, so that balance was appreciated. The place itself is awesome. Plenty of TVs, a great layout, outdoor patio, and a great bar area. Perfect hangout spot whether you're with family, friends, or just grabbing lunch solo. Prices are reasonable and competitive with similar spots. The downtown McKinney location is ideal and easy walking distance to other shops and restaurants, so no need to keep driving around. Food was great. The burger was juicy and flavorful even well done. The salmon was also well done with crispy edges and a slab of butter that melted right over it great flavor. Hoping that butter option is available for the steak because that's next on my list. Sides were solid too. Only thing I wasn't big on was the fries. They're super thin, so they were crispy but had a slightly hard, borderline stale texture. Just my opinion though. overall still a great experience. Definitely coming back. We made a reservation for our family of five and I am so glad we did - this place is busy! We waited in a short line to check in and were immediately seated once we checked in. Our booth was very comfortable and easily fit our family of five. The noise level is above average, but not for a sports bar/brewery. It was just right for us. We could talk, but didn't to worry about anyone being disturbed by our kids being a little louder than normal. The menu isn't big, so I suggest perusing before arriving, especially if you have dietary restrictions or are picky. Our family settled on + Korean Shrimp Tacos (no dairy). The kitchen was super careful not to include any dairy in my tacos. They were tasty, but I didn't realize the shrimp would be fried and the slaw would be removed to accomodate my no dairy request. I would pick something else next time. + Big Tavern Burger for my husband and he loved it! Even the fries were a hit. + Big Tavern Burger with cheese and grilled onions only for one of the kids. + Plain hamburger and a single meat patty for our other two kiddos. + Hubby and I both got unsweet iced teas and the tea was brewed just right. Our waitress was wonderful, I hate that I forgot her name. She was friendly and kept our waters and iced tea full the whole time. We have absolutely no complaints! We came on a whim on a Saturday and I forgot to take pictures because we were enjoying it so much. First of all, sit on the heated patio. It's Texas in the winter, you will be fine. But in all seriousness it is enclosed and the heaters keep you comfy. Second, the chicken fingers are the most juicy chicken fingers that you'll ever have. Also what place these days gives you the superior dipping sauces that you have to have and need when enjoying a dish of this caliber! Also, the Brussels sprouts slaw was so good our 10 month old devoured it with the chicken fingers. The Caesar salad was needy level. Again, if a place gives you fresh cracked pepper on your Caesar, you must return. It is law. This salad was amazing, and the Parmesan was even flavorful. Who says that? First off, we had a great waiter in Caleb, who kept our drinks full and took care of is very well, the food was phenomenal. Had the Texas redfish which I dearly love and it tasted probably the best I've ever had. To start of course Green Beer, it was refreshing nothing to over the top like an IPA. Starter we shared the sweet and spicy shrimp-Tempura battered, Thai sweet chili and napa slaw...yes please! We had some friends visiting and we needed a place for an afternoon weekend outing. We decided on Union Bear Brewing and I'm glad we did. First and foremost the cocktails were great! We ordered from both the seasonal drink menu and regular and all around we were happy. I was a little skeptical about the pizza with it being deep dish, we were just looking for a small bite but after seeing it (our friend's ordered one) I will definitely be trying the white pie next time! The wings were quite salty and the fries were really nothing special, but at least they were crispy! None of the other appetizers really stood out to me though. The interior is really pretty and has a great patio. Great place to catch some sports with a friendly staff as well. They do have their own parking lot with maybe 10 spots otherwise there are other parking options like street parking and parking garages in the area. read more

First time trying this place and for the most part, enjoyed what we ordered. The decor is a modern lounge/bar and looked really nice. We sat on the patio as it was a nice day out. We started with a beer, a glass of wine, and a "caddy", which is similar to a frozen margarita. The caddy was quite sour and ok. This place didn't have any cider, but I think they may be looking into potentially offering one at some point. Food wise, we split a big tavern burger, which was cooked well and was quite tasty. The fires were probably my favorite. They were the size of McD fries, but really crispy! The crisp dry-sliced wings lived up to their name. They were incredibly crispy and jam packed with seasoning. I've been here three times now with friend invites and it's okay food wise. Definitely edible but nothing that really is memorable or amazing. Service is good overall; two visits it was excellent and the other it was okay. We've ordered the salmon, a flat bread (honey pig), the fish and chips, the pretzel, the poke bowl, the Brussels, pork rinds and the sweet and spicy shrimp. The salmon is good but the sides with it are just eh. The fish and chips are not worth your money. Very bland and the breading is too heavy. Wasn't impressed with the Brussels, or the pork rinds. The pretzel bites honestly were my favorite things here. The shrimp appetizer was okay as well. Feel it's a tad over priced for the taste. We came to this restaurant to grab a quick dinner in the area on a hot summer evening. Even though we showed up without reservations, seating was not too hard and the wait was not too long. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside and the outside area was also very nice with a beautiful covered porch and well scattered tables. It might be the New York in me, and the fact that I am not as acclimatized to Texas Summers anymore, but when we got to our outside table and sat down, it felt like I was going to die. I really do think that the misters and whatever situation they have for climate control on the outside Porch are simply not enough and they definitely need to add more fans. To start off, I ordered the dry rubbed chicken wings that were absolutely phenomenal, they were cooked perfectly, and I loved the dusting on them. Beer were served cold, but lacked foam on top, which makes it go warm quicker. For my entrée, I went with the trout and was slightly disappointed. The flavors sounded delicious on paper, but did not work too well for me. The slaw was on the dry side and could've used a lot more of that lemony sauce. Arugula was largely missing from the plate and the texture of those dried chickpeas was way off, I would rather prefer them to be crunchy, than dehydrated and soft. They literally added nothing to the dish. The filet of trout itself was cooked very well. I loved the cornmeal dusting and the crunchiness that it added to the exterior of the fish. For dessert, we went with the brownie and I absolutely loved the textures on it. The ice cream paired well, and I loved the little bits of toffee. This was definitely a texture girlie's dream. Overall, I would say this restaurant was a hit or miss, and I hope that they can make some improvement based on my feedback. read more

The chicken tender was delicious; I definitely love the Brussel sprout slaw that came with it. The crunchy almonds in the slaw added the wonderful taste to it . My son got the pretzel bites, and it tasted okay , almost reminding me of baguette. I didn't care much for the beer cheese dip though. Place was full so we ended up sitting outdoors which was a little hot. They had shades and fans so it wasn't so bad despite the triple digit temp. The service was fast and our server was attentive. I had ex excellent experience at Union Bear yesterday evening. I had never been to this or any other location, but was in historic McKinney and decided to give it a try. I was assisted by two hostesses, and both were very friendly and welcoming. My waiter was also very friendly and helpful. I sat in the patio, which is slightly covered with fans, misters, and TVs. I ordered a sure house salad, and at the suggestions of my waiter, the reuben and the Whiskey Business cocktail. The food was great and came out quickly. My drink not so much.... At one point, a staff member came to my table with a bourbon flight. I told her I didn't order it. She looked confused but returned to the bar. I was almost halfway through my meal when my waiter approached me, apologizing about the drink. He said that he accidentally hit the wrong drink button for my order and that they were working on the drink I ordered. I appreciated him for apologizing and for taking accountability for the mistake. You have no idea how rare that has become at restaurants. I wasn't upset at all because he acknowledged this error. Two minutes later, my drink arrived and it was very good. It was a nice, flavorful, sweet bourbon drink that's great for the summer. I will absolutely be back to Union Bear! My first time in and I was impressed. They just opened so I expected everything to be on point, and they still exceeded expectations. I was sad they didn't have their stout on tap, but it is getting warmer outside and stout is a cold weather beer ( in my opinion ). Their No Coast IPA was very good. The staff handled the crowd with ease, and the manager even stopped by to check in with guests--a nice, personal touch. Came here on a crowded afternoon, so get a reservation if possible because we were able to be seated immediately at our reservation time. There are a ton of drink options, and the Union Bear sour beer is delicious! For appetizers we got the Mediterranean platter and it was great. The burger and Brussel sprouts were also fantastic. The best part about the restaurant though had to be how quick the service was. It was full and it must have taken 5 minutes to get our food after ordering.
