I like to come here to get lunch to go. For to-go orders, go around the corner from the main restaurant to Spoons Garage. The garage has more of a small cafe feel, with a little shop inside which I believe sells locally-made items. You can also sit down and order a meal off the menu here instead of eating at the main restaurant's dining room. The first time I came for lunch, I asked the server which salad is the best. He recommended the Caribbean Salad. It's not usually the kind of thing I order, and it seemed like an odd mix of ingredients (smoked shredded chicken, crispy bacon pieces, chopped apples, golden raisins, blue cheese crumbles, almonds and banana chips served on a bed of baby spinach leaves with ginger mandarin dressing ), but I figured I would try something new. And I loved it! Today I ordered the same salad along with a cherry vanilla Italian soda (yum). My cashier told me that he likes to make an Italian soda with vanilla and lavender which sounds interesting. He was very friendly, and he even made up a funny little song about my salad as he brought out my order (which came out very quickly). I called to place a delivery order (I work on the square-about a block away and cannot leave my store unattended), I was placed on hold for approx. 11 min., after no answer I called back when I was told by Russell(?) "We are too busy for delivery-maybe try another day?". Very disappointed~instead of asking where I was located, I feel like I got big FAT 'Go somewhere else, we don't need your money'. Everything about Spoons is comforting and the staff is extremely nice and welcoming. The only thing I have to say is that Spoons can get very busy during the lunch/dinner rush hours. Here's the story of my first and possibly last visit: Well today my wife and I decided to go walk around downtown McKinney and came across this place. We saw a sign outside that showed happy hour specials on drinks and apps from 3pm-7pm, but unfortunately it was only 2:10pm. Since we were in no hurry we decided to get some coffee from a near by coffee shop and wait. We arrived back at Spoons a couple mins before 3pm and were sat immediately. We didn't mind sitting in the back by the tubs where they put their dirty dishes even though there were several other empty tables around us including small tables for two (which was our party size). We sit there for a few mins while we wait for our server and notice that the tables around us are starting to fill. So we assumed they were getting busy and would be with us soon. As a few more mins go by we see that now the tables that have been sat after us now have their drinks and some even with food on the way. I've made eye contact with several of the staff including the waiter for the neighboring tables and yet it's like they saw right through me. After 10mins of being completely ignored we decided to go elsewhere. Was pretty shocked at how no one ever came or even asked if everything was ok. Ironically enough the only time they acknowledged us was when we got up to leave. The hostess that sat us 10mins ago waved and said "thanks guys" as if we had a full meal and she was thank us for our business.... I found this kinda funny, but the wife on the other hand was offended. Maybe one day we'll go back and give it another try but sadly won't be for awhile. read more

Four of us went on a Sunday for brunch. Place was packed and was told it would be 30 minute wait. We have our cell number and popped over to one of the cute boutiques that are right in the area. 15 minutes later, our table was ready. Our waitress was so friendly and did a great job directing us as to what may be good dishes to have. A few of our crew were hungover from night before and went straight for coffee. I ordered the Spicy Pig Bloody Mary and it was AWESOME!!!! Do yourself a favor and order this. My husband started with a cup of chili which we said was one of the best chilis he's had (no beans of course... we ARE in Texas!). He followed that up with a breakfast taco which was MASSIVE. Two hands are not enough to hold this monster. I got strawberry pancakes (huge and filling), an egg over medium (cooked perfectly) and some tasty and perfectly-crisp bacon. Simple order but deliciously made. My girlfriend got waffles and her husband ordered the eggs Benedict. All of us were really happy with our food, were gleefully pleased with service... and left feeling full, cozy and content. Will add Spoons to our regular Sunday brunch rotation. Great atmosphere, good food, friendly service. However, i noticed its beginning to become a victim of its own success. Last few times we were there it took along time for my husband and i to be seated and served. To cut down on our wait time we agreed to be seated at the counter. We felt "pinned down" in the corner of the counter as waitresses scurried around us. We still enjoy eating here though we don't go as often as we did in the first year they opened. My boyfriend and I were craving a good breakfast. We had walked in to a place previous to this one who said the wait was long, so we figured we would try it out. First of all, it's hard to know which entrance is the front. There is a side entrance with their sign out front so we went in. The hostess and waitress were talking back and forth about if there was seating in this cellar portion of the restaurant. Never did they address us and let us know what was going on. Finally they told us that was the overflow seating and there was another door on the side. We walked through the main portion of the restaurant to the hostess and get seated. Spoon's food seems to be assembled from pre-packed items and is tremendously lacking in seasoning. I wonder if anyone tastes anything before it leaves the kitchen. If so, there is an even bigger issue. My husband and I had the migas. How do you take chorizo, eggs, cheese, jalapenos and tortillas and get something that flavorless? After adding salt, pepper, all the salsa we were served and topping it with hot sauce from the table, we found it edible. We believe the jalapenos came from a jar. We skipped the flour tortillas that were served with it. They had clearly been warmed in the microwave and were tough in parts and chewy in others. My husband also had a side of biscuits and gravy, one of his favorites, but even after adding salt and pepper, it was flavorless and inedible. We were served "cottage potatoes" as a side. They were cubed potatoes, fried. That's it. I would guess pre-cut potatoes from a bag. No seasoning added. Again, flavorless. My husband and I could have spent less money, grabbed the same ingredients at the grocery store and whipped up something much better in our own home. When the waiter asked how things were tasting, I gave him an "ehhh" response, implying mediocre at best. He didn't follow up. Additionally he didn't ask why only one bite had been taken out of the biscuits and gravy when he cleared the table. The price is low. I suppose they can sell it cheaply because they don't buy any seasonings. The place was packed when we left. And I don't get it. It's sad that when you leave you are talking about how McDonald's and Sonic would have been better choices. Everything in downtown McKinney we've tried so far has been outstanding. We heart Spoons Garage! My husband, daughter and I were in McKinney this afternoon and stopped at Coffee Squared where we had the most horrendous tasting coffee drinks we've ever had. Seriously. And the service was, well, not present. After tossing our drinks we walked over to Spoons Garage where my husband had done a photo shoot a few years ago. We had eaten in the restaurant a few times and the food was yummy. I wouldn't call it gourmet, but it was spot on comfort food. I do enjoy the comfortable, kitschy feel of the place well over chain restaurants. I'll agree with many of the other reviews that the service was iffy, somewhat impolite, and could certainly use some help in many areas. Downstairs in the Garage it was wonderful. We were greeted warmly and were made to feel welcomed. Randall heard about our overall lousy experience at Coffee Squared and to our surprise, brought us his version of what we had ordered there, on the house! I must say that it was by far the best caramel macchiato I have ever had, and my husband's mocha was equally good. We ordered cherry pie a la mode from our server Channing. She was delightful and provided great service. She has only been waiting tables a few months and could teach more experienced servers a few things. Next time we're in the neighborhood we'll revisit the restaurant for dinner and will definitely save room and time to head downstairs to the Garage! read more

I had enjoyed a big cup of coffee on their front patio before and listened to the live music from the winery across the road and it was amazing. Perfect weather, sweet and savory coffee and great music. My boyfriend and I decided we wanted to go for brunch on Sunday and were sadly disappointed, however. We arrived around 12:45 on a Sunday and was told about a 20-25 minute wait time, which is perfectly okay. After a few minuted of waiting, the hostess told us there was an opening on the "back patio" and that we would have to leave the restaurant and walk around the corner to get there. Very odd, but okay. We walked back there and it is called the "Selfie Spot" I guess (according to a sign) and there's a few tables in a little fenced in area off the sidewalk. We were quickly brought menus but then it seemed like we were completely forgotten about. It took over 5 minutes to get our drink order placed. Once we had ordered our food, it took a good amount of time to get it, but I understood that this was a peak time and that they were busy. My boyfriend and his son received their entire meals and I received part of mine (I ordered a waffle with 1 egg and bacon). I received the egg and some very burnt bacon, which our server noted that it was quite burnt and she would get me new bacon and my waffle. She came back a couple minutes later with new bacon, which was also very burned. She acknowledged this and asked me if I wanted them to try again but I said that it was fine, it wasn't as bad as the first batch. Still, I waited on my waffle that she assured me would be right out (usually these things take the least amount of time, considering my boyfriend had ordered an omelette). Once my boyfriend and his son had finished their meals, still no waffle and no waitress to be seen. She finally came back around and asked how everything was and we told her I was still waiting for my meal! She came back within a few minutes with my waffle, the syrup on the side already had the film on the top from it sitting out. The waffle was okay, unusually flaky. I've never eaten a flaky waffle before. Wasn't terrible but I have eaten better waffles. The kicker was when I got the check I paid $15 for my mediocre, way late waffle and my boyfriend's omelette meal was $14. Don't forget the almost $7 for a kid's peanut butter and jelly with chips and a drink. The waitress never came back to get my card so I had to leave cash on the table and leave (after waiting almost ten minutes for her to come back). First time at Spoons and we really enjoyed it. The area is great and since we went early on a Saturday morning (930 am)parking wasn't hard to find. My husband and I both ordered Migas but I needed to make sure the eggs didn't have any added milk to them, and hold the cheese. Our server said its best she put down dairy free so the kitchen knows clearly. I was so happy she said that. My husbands migas was normal so that was easy. It's been my experience most places mess up when I ask for it dairy free. So I was pleasantly surprised they got it right. Everything is straight out of the Southern Living cookbook but downgraded because the place skimps out on the decent ingredients. Save yourself a trip and head over to Sauce if you want to spend $10 for lunch, you get better quality food and professional staff. Also - the "garage" is behind spoon's and their barista (big bear guy, don't know his name) makes great espresso! It's the only reason I would spend another dime there. And the cakes are great but I have reason to believe it's nothing but boxed cake mix. I have been eating at Spoons since she opened up for business. Her original location was across the street from her current one and was teeny tiny! A group of us from work used to go to lunch there every Friday & I have continued the tradition with my girls and friends! The hardest thing for me is always which entree will I order?!!? Well, first, do I go with breakfast or lunch, THEN what do I order?!?? I have never had a bad thing off the menu. Not once. Today, I ordered a piece of strawberry cake and watched my 5 year old devour it! I had always thought that Spoons Garage was just an extension of Spoons Cafe but not so!! I stopped in today after walking around the square taking stock of which shops had sales, who was new and who was on their way out. The garage has a list of specialty lattes and the like outside and they had me at the first one with blueberry and raspberry flavoring, a "Tune Up". I stepped in and it is just the cutest little coffee shop. They don't have a lot of space but it was cozy and there were quite a few people in enjoying conversation over coffee and bakery treats. The Tune Up is delicious though a little pricey. Four dollars and some change for a 12 ounce specialty drink. In my mind, however, it is totally worth it as a treat. The taste is great and it really hit the spot on such a cold day. When I asked if the drip coffee was strong, they said it was but not Starbucks strong. I'll have to leave that to my husband to try for himself as he likes coffee at a decidedly European strength. read more

We ended up at spoons garage which I guess is an extension of the original cafe just outside town square. The atmosphere was good.. casual and comfortable. It's got a feel of Austin Tx and wasn't at all what I was expecting from the sleepy little town of McKinney. My brother lives in McKinney and I visited him about ten months ago and visited this place with my dad. I have since moved in with my brother and his family and have visited this place once more. Not impressed with the food but like everyone says, the atmosphere is good. I've had their sliders, a sandwich that I cannot remember, tomato soup, and chili. The sliders were ok. The sandwich was a bit odd but only because I intended to eat only half of it and then switch out the other half for a half of my brother's but next thing I knew I was chomping down on the second half before I had switched it out. So I guess that means it was pretty good. The tomato soup I remember as being tasty. And the chili was about 2 stars but I can see how it would appeal to certain tastes. In all, with the exception of the tomato soup, the food was meh - that's apparently 2 stars here on Yelp - the place itself gets like 3.5 stars, and the wait staff is a bit hit and miss. Overall, it's a-ok because they do have a variety of things to serve so if you're with a group, everyone can at least find something they want to try and go at least meh afterwards. So if you're with a group and each person wants their own thing - 3 stars. But if it's just you or your group wants something specific you could probably find some place better in historic downtown McKinney. read more

Which was supposed to come with smoked shredded chicken breast, Romaine lettuce, shredded Parmesan cheese and Caesar dressing, and ordered it on flour tortillas. They got the lettuce and tortilla correct that was it. Ended up with ham, pepper jack, red onion and mayo. And forgot to mention the side I picked. mashed potatoes. Well they were exactly what they said they were... just some boiled potatoes that they mashed up... no milk/cream/butter... nothing at all ... no butter available... just some 'buttery spread' A complete fail if you ask me. And getting a hold of the waitress for any help was a waste of time. Had to almost beg to just get a drink refill. First and last time ever trying this establishment. She just looked at the menu and waved her hand over the front and said "everything here is good" and then she flipped it over "and everything here is good." When we first arrived for lunchtime it was quite busy and we (group of 4) were told it would be a 25-minute wait which is to be expected. After 25 minutes we watched as numerous groups who arrived after us were seated. We asked if we could be seated in the "garage area" since the main dining area was full. The hostess said no even after we mentioned that we had been waiting and that other groups who arrived after us were seated and eating. About 10 minutes later the hostess told us we could now suddenly go to the garage area. We were immediately seated there and served. The food was okay...nothing exciting or worth going back for. My friends said they loved the coffee though! Overall, i was very disappointed with the way the hostess handled the seating and it was very offputting.
