I explained my foot problems as I had just returned from my Podiatry Dr Visit. Explained my need for the ideal shoe for work and for non-working days. All the while as I'm trying on shoes she set me up to try, she's juggling other customers graciously and successfully, also stocking shoes. I felt very relieved and happy with my purchases. When was the last time you walked into a store where literally every single employee was not only knowledgeable, but also genuinely wanted to help you find the perfect item to fit your need? That was my experience last night at Sports Basement. I was there for an in-store event (so much fun!) and decided to sneak away from the party for a few minutes to finally research a backpack I've been needing -- one strong and comfortable enough to serve as my Wildfire Go-Bag. Every employee I spoke with was helpful and upbeat. Paul, in the backpack section, was exceptional. He listened carefully to what I needed, explained the differences between models, and taught me how to fit a pack properly so it wouldn't strain my back. Within 20 minutes! After trying the first, I was astonished how comfortable the second was: the Osprey Aura AG LT 50. It's a mid-range pack that fit my body better than the Osprey Renn 50. It feels supportive, and the deep burgundy color is stunning. It's even adjustable, so if for some reason someone else needs to carry my bag, it can be adapted to protect their back, too. Thanks to the event's 20% discount, I was able to get the ideal match for my needs at the price of a lower-range model that didn't fit me as well. Paul also suggested a couple of brilliant extras--like the portable Cleanwaste toilet kit and the Katadyn BeFree water filter. For my wildfire go-bag, they're exactly the kinds of things that will make a difference. I appreciated how thoughtful and practical his recommendations were. I was not impressed with this plane at all. The first concern for me as a chronically ill individual was their sign stating that masks were not allowed to be worn. I asked the person at the entrance if he'd like to see my ID first, because I'm protecting my health, and needed to make a purchase. I was allowed in. There were no employees around to assist me, no prices on the things I wanted to purchase. It seemed dark and dirty, which I suppose is the "basement" vibe. After a few minutes of looking for home workout equipment, I stumbled upon some dumbells, none with prices, but I grabbed two five pound weights and headed to the register, where there was a maze of protein snacks and cold drinks to get through. I was shocked to pay $30.00 for two 5 lb dumbells that are made in the good ol' USA. read more

Sports Basement is a retail sports shop. It's a local Bay Area business with several locations. This one is in Novato off the Highway 101. The inventory is huge ranging from sports equipment, bicycles, clothing, shoes, sunglasses, and rental gear. Rentals include snow, surf, and camping equipment; bicycles; and sports equipment. They have a bicycle repair shop as well. Pricing is comparable to other like sports shops. They carry quality brands and products. Staff is helpful. I'm not a local, but I do like to stop in when I can. I luv checking out the seasonal gear. I could spend hours in here. For a $25 one time fee, folks can join the Basementeer rewards program. It offers 10% off purchases among other things. But the restroom could do with a remodel. They are very old, dirty and worn out. Depressing. So opposite of the look and maintenance of the retail floor. The stalls have no working locks. Not sure the reasoning behind that. Plus when exiting the bathroom, please take caution and watch out for staff wheeling flatbed carts from the side storage. Wow, what an experience I had Thursday evening at this Yelp event held at Sports Basement. First off I was immediately greeted by such a nice gentleman as I walked to the door. He led me to where I needed to go station by station and everyone was so helpful and so friendly! I really loved how everyone dressed up. I hated that I couldn't participate because I had another obligation, however I loved how each of the businesses were so engaged with everyone super friendly. If I could rate this experience, a 10 out of 10, I would! I just really loved the whole set up, not realizing how many various businesses were at this event. I was able to try different foods that I haven't tried and let me tell you I forgot the name of the restaurant, but that posole was super fire! I thoroughly enjoyed the couple that owns the honey soda station I wanted to buy some right on site! After buying shoes, my podiatrist recommended, from Amazon three times and having to return them, I decided to try Sports Basement to be able to talk to an actual sales person. I needed a narrow hiking/running shoe with a wide toe. Gerald, the guy who helped me, knew exactly what shoe companies made that particular kind of shoe. Paul, the boot doctor, brought tears of gratitude to my eyes when he helped me with some custom orthotics. I had been skiing and snowboarding in pain for 30 years and was resigned to the fact that that was just the way it was going to be. A special thanks to "Gerald" who spent the time to walk through the various types of running and trail shoes. Gerald even shared his personal experience with shoe brands, cushion types, etc. without the pressure. He offered a number of tips in my search too! A gracious thanks to "Geno" who gave me a few pointers and tips on the types of tennis rackets (fitting, size, comfort ability), and pickle ball paddles (beginner to experienced player) and shared the borrow - try out program before purchasing. I am an avid shopped with the competitor "R" and even have a lifetime membership, but Gerald and Geno exceeded my expectations with their knowledge and experience in running and tennis without sounding pretentious or sales focused. I brought in a 95% assembled bike from an offshore manufacturer with a 54 cm frame to my Sports Basement, along with a new smaller 51cm bare frame. The job was a "pro build" taking everything off the 54 cm frame and building up the 51 cm frame. The groupset was an exotic mix of standard Shimano 105 and various parts you'd normally find on AliExpress (not necessarily "bad," but not from one of The Big Three). So there were some "challenges" with the non-Shimano parts. But in the end, with great perseverance, the guys found a way to make everything work together beautifully. We were up in the Novato area to do a merchandise pickup at this Sports Basement recently. They are Covid-Safe with temperature checks at the door. Great customer service and friendly staff. The store is clean and well-kept. There was a good amount of workout equipment and weights available. A lot of places are sold out of these items. The parking lot is pretty big with plenty of space on the left side. That entrance is closed though so you'd have to walk back to the front to enter. read more

I'm sitting in my car having just left sports basement in Novato. I walked in. Someone greeted me I said, where can I find weight lifting stuff. He tells me to go down the center to your left. I went all the way down the center and went to my left I looked around, couldn't find anything looked up, I see a sign that said Yoga and something went in there. Nothing. Not one person approached me. Nobody tried to help me. When I left there two people just hanging out at the register. No goodbye, not did you find what you needed? I'm gonna try big five now. This review is loooong overdue. I was ecstatic when I first heard Sports Basement would be opening up a location in Novato last year. I used to go to their Presidio location all the time, but now it's great there is one in my backyard. My boyfriend and I always find a reason to go, we practically shop here on a weekly basis. We usually purchase clothes, shoes, or sports equipment. Some popular active wear brands they carry are: Patagonia, Mountain Hard Wear, North Face, Roxy, Arc'teryx, and Columbia just to name a few. They go on sale during different times throughout the year making them a little more affordable. Being a Basementeer takes an extra 10% purchases. I like the fact that everything is spread out and clearly marked, making it a nicer shopping experience. We usually shop in the same departments every time, but there are also other departments for skiing, camping, cycling, and fitness. It is an excellent location, formally Macy's furniture store in Vintage Oaks shopping center. There is plenty of parking infront and along the side of the building. They always have great deals like the basically free bike tune up. You pay for a tune up and then they give you that money back in a gift certificate to the store. The best part was the mechanics were knowledgeable and didn't try to upsell me on a bunch of crap I don't need. What a great experience thanks to Paul Bildsoe. I came into SB to try on and buy a pair of ski boots, not expecting much in the way of help from staff. Boy was I wrong. I lucked into meeting Paul, who gave me some advice and recommended another brand to try along with what I had planned to purchase. We decided to order in a pair of boots from another location and I made an appointment to try them on side by side. What a professional, not to mention an all around great guy. THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE Yesterday, I went into the store desperate to find snow gear as I am heading to Tahoe in two days. I was unexpectedly surprise with how much support and help I received in the store. In the clothes section, Alsy worked hard to help me find cute jackets to go with my pink bib. Just bought a new mountain bike today, Sports Basement was amazing . All of the staff is knowledgeable, helpful and still very laid back and low pressure. I felt completely comfortable test riding bikes and trying on clothes.
