I did eventually hear back and was given a $30 dollar coupon for another order. Essentially I paid nearly $70 for about $25 worth of vegetables (for me to buy the missing proteins was almost $45). I did place a second order with the coupon and no issues with delivery on the second order. Pros: delivery is convenient, meals are not hard to make, instructions are pretty clear. Cons: POOR customer service, cannot include some meals from the regular menu and some from the gluten free (it is one or the other), meals are not overly flavorful, no cooling packs / ice in the delivery boxes and no effort to place the box in the shade on my porch (box was left in direct sun and was very warm when I got home -- likely effected quality of the vegetables)

I ordered their Thanksgiving holiday box, and it exceeded my expectations! What you get from Kau Kau Box is a box (obvi) of chef-prepared meals, plus local eggs, fish, and produce. Vegetarian meals are available, too. There are pickups available for Tuesdays and Saturdays, each with different menus. You can purchase a subscription to save $$ or just purchase individual boxes as you need them. It has been on my radar screen for a while now, but I finally took the plunge, and I'm hooked. Pickup at Ala Moana was super easy. I drove up, gave them my name, opened my trunk, and was back on the road within seconds. The pickup location is off Atkinson, and it's easiest if you drive down Atkinson toward Ala Moana Blvd - the entrance is on your right, with Kau Kau Box signs to guide you. If you turn up Atkinson from Ala Moana, you have to make an awkward series of turns to get there. Delivery is also available for an additional fee. For Thanksgiving, the box $134 + tax) included 4 slices of roast turkey breast, 4 giant bone-in pork chops, mashed potatoes with caramelized onions, a savory bread pudding with butternut squash and manchego cheese - an elevated stuffing, turkey gravy, cranberry-orange sauce, spiced apple chutney, challah bread, jus for the pork, pumpkin crunch, a chunk of nairagi fish, 2 heads of lettuce, freshly-made croutons, cherry tomatoes, 2 avocados, 2 papaya, a butternut squash, and a dozen medium eggs. We are a family of 3 (2 adults, one 6yo), and this box has fed us for days. We got Thanksgiving dinner and Friday lunch out of the turkey, bread pudding, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, and challah (I added some brussels sprouts). We got 2 dinners from the pork chops and salad/croutons (I added some mac and cheese). A couple breakfasts of avocado toast and papaya from the leftover challah and avocados (um, and also the pumpkin crunch). I still have the butternut squash to cook, and I stashed the fish in the freezer for later because I knew we'd already have days of food with everything else. When I opened the box, it seemed like way more than I was expecting. Everything comes in containers or vacuum-sealed packages for reheating. There are also instructions on reheating everything, so if you're not sure what should go together, you have help. Everything was labeled with best-by dates for both the fridge and the freezer. The menu and instructions also included a recipe for deviled eggs. Everything tasted so fresh and well-prepared, even the things I just microwaved. I LOVE to cook, and I cook at home most everyday, but this pandemic has just burned me out. I've been trying to limit my trips out and about, and planning meals 2-3 weeks in advance is a lot of mental labor. So I really appreciate meals that I don't have to think really hard about - maybe just a side here and there - and can be heated without hours of prepwork in the kitchen. Especially helpful for long days. And, maybe most importantly, it's all been delicious.

Understandably, it's no surprise that the Hawaii Kai community raves about a season novelty turned everyday after-dinner dessert or in my case, a guilty-pleasure-perfect accompaniment with my morning coffee. What makes Kimo's bread pudding so easy-going I find, is that it's not custard-heavy and gummy like most bread pudding. It still retains the same familiar flavor but there's a nice airiness and crunch on the top from a delicious crust. It's like two-desserts in-one: reminiscent of a Kouign-Amon with a delicious comforting custard inside. If you are a chocolate-lover like me, Kimo has a divine chocolate bread pudding and currently for the holidays, a pumpkin cream cheese which I heard is a must. Popular for parties, you can order $12 loaves, $15 for flavors or party pans for $35, $40 for flavors. He also delivers if you live in the HK area for a small delivery fee. He used to post in the parking lot across from the HK Costco but haven't seen him there lately, but you can catch him at Kaiser's Farmer's Market from 4p-6p Tuesdays. You can't miss the pink and green sign. He sells out quick, so make sure to get yours and my suggestion, order at least two-- one for you and a friend or two for you (no judgment).
