My family has used the Spring Valley Dental group for well over two decades but no longer. Our family loved Dr. Martin and he is the consummate professional in our eyes, but we could no longer tolerate the attitudes of his front office and accounting personnel. After the management change, their front office has proven to be less than customer oriented, often rude, and completely unresponsive. We switched to another local dentist and are very happy with them, however, after three different attempts to have our records forwarded to the new dentist from the Spring Valley office, our new dentist has yet to receive the records and/or X-rays. We do miss Dr Martin, but are very happy with our new dentist and do not regret having changed. read more

This was my first dental appointment in a few years due to insurance issues. I was very nervous and just anxious in general about any cost for whatever treatment I may need. Everyone was really nice here, and made things easy for me to understand. Turns out my teeth weren't too bad, just need a good cleaning and some fillings. They explained my treatment plans and laid out the cost. I appreciate them giving me options, I didn't feel forced to make other appointments. This appointment went much smoother than I anticipated. I love Dr. Ames. Seriously. I love Dr. Ames. I could just copy and paste that line for the rest of this review. He's been my dentist since I was five years old. Every time one of my classmates (or later, coworkers) would complain about a hygiene appointment or some restorative work they needed to get done -- and how terrified they were of going -- I literally could not comprehend what they were afraid of. Spring Valley has always been a pleasant, positive experience for me. I worked for a dental insurance company for two years, and particularly now that I am familiar with what goes on behind the scenes, it's even more obvious to me that everyone at the office goes above and beyond to deliver exceptional service and treatment to their patients. After the horror stories I've heard of other dental offices who botched insurance paperwork or -- even worse -- the actual procedures, I can't even begin to express how grateful I am to Dr. Ames and his staff that I've never, ever had to worry about finding myself in one of those nightmare scenarios. I've been a patient at Spring Valley for many years. Previously a patient of Dr.Aaron Oge (top notch as well as a SIU Dental School Professor) After many years of driving, Dr Oge has moved to a practice closer to his home in Missouri, and left his patients in the (recently proven) very capable hands of Dr. Jon Owen (Also a SIU Dental School Grad. A few years back I was forced to change dentists due to the fact that Spring Valley was out of network for the dental plan I had through my then employer. After a recent bad experience involving not one but two teeth which landed me in the ER, many sleepless nights and pain beyond description, I called Spring Valley in desparate need of assistance. Thankfully Devin answered the phone, and the compassion and professionalism she has shown to assist me with appointment and authorizations has been excellent! Devin is a very valuable member of the Spring Valley team! Much to my surprise, Devin informed me that Spring Valley IS in network with the dental insurance I now have, and was able to schedule me the same day with Dr. Jon Owen! Dr. Owen (along with Dr Adam Diliberto (An Excellent Endodontist/Swansea IL) worked to reverse the previous providers missteps (which were many) and thankfully all previous dental missteps have been corrected, and I am totally pain free! Lesson learned? There are dentists, then there are exceptional Dentists like the ones/ Dr Jon Owen at Spring Valley Dental! We had an appointment for my 18 year old son. We actually ended up seeing both Dr. Ames and Dr. Martin. Both were very professional and nice. We were comfortable and everything was explained throughout the visit. Did not feel like we were rushed through and they took the time to answer our questions. Thanks for such a great experience. I found Dr. Martin on Yelp after seeing another dentist in the area that I was unhappy with. After an initial visit for a toothache with Dr. Martin I knew I had made a great choice! He wasn't pushy and he gave me numerous options besides just going in and doing tons of pricey dental work. I went back to see him to fix a few dental issues that I did not trust my prior dentist with. He was knowledgable, gentle and put me totally at ease. I then decided to go ahead and do some orthodontic work on my teeth that I've been wanting to do for a while. I am a week away from getting my braces off and he did exactly what I wanted (in less than 6 months to boot)! As a military dependent, moving around a lot, I've seen a lot of dentists and Dr. Martin is definitely one I wish I could take with us! read more

My daughter had a tooth emergency. Our regular dentist was out of town, and I was looking for someone to help her get some relief immediately. The office staff couldn't have been nicer and more understanding. They fit us right in. The dental hygienist was great and made my daughter comfortable. Dr. Martin pulled the tooth and did it so expertly, that my daughter didn't even know he had done it. He was awesome with my very frightened daughter. He took the time to show her pictures of his daughters and calm her down. What I love about this whole experience was that they all were aware we were just there because our regular dentist was not available, but treated us as their best patients. BEWARE - From my personal experience, Dentist is cocky, does not give a clear care plan, over charges for services. Front desk clerk is RUDE! Has NO insurance billing knowledge. This is not the first time - while goggling found the following reviews: May 10, 2011 Constant Billing Errors and Run Around. We have had several cases of over charges, and false information, where their billing dept claims there has been a change in the insurance process, and then we talk to the insurance, and they are able to prove that there has been no changes at all. Constantly get 30 and 40 dollar additional billings weeks/months after our-co pay and insurance payments have already gone through. The docs are nice, but not worth teh overcharges and trouble. DentistNeeded - Mar 1, 2011 Was very convenient for the area. I liked the dentist however, I stopped going after getting a 500$ bill without any notice on an appointment right before Christmas. I just feel that it was more about the money then service. They knew how much was left on my insurance and continued to schedule me for everything until we used 100% of coverage in a year. I paid every bill up front but after I left, I still got a bill in the mail for some unknown service. We saw Dr. Ames and he was good. Its just sad that everything done you have to question and not being able to trust your doctor is very important. I just didnt like feeling like their cash cow. They insisted it was fine, sent him home and it caused him severe pain. I've been a patient at spring valley since 2000! It's by far the best atmosphere, everyone makes you feel at ease. I am always greeted as soon as I walk in the door, checking in and scheduling always runs smoothly. Dr. Martin has a gentle way of dealing with patients and his staff is very compassionate when dealing with my children. Would highly recommend! read more

Deceptive Billing Practices! I moved to the area in late 2013, and needed a dentist. I called the SVDG and asked if they took my insurance, they said they did. I scheduled an appointment and was seen. At that time (December 2013) they told me that my insurance company covered the visit 100% and I didn't have to pay anything out-of-pocket. I was happy with the service, and I needed a crown, so I scheduled additional appointments for that, plus appointments for other family members. Each time, I was told that the procedure was covered, or in the case of the crown, I paid the percentage that the insurance company did not pay. In June 2014, seven months after the first appointment, I received a bill for several hundred dollars! It turns out that not only is the SVDG not a member of my insurance plan, but they also charged a rate higher than my coverage pays for EVERY procedure. I know that not confirming with the insurance company is my fault, but I truly believe that, since they know what networks they are not in, they should have known whether or not their fee was over my plan's allowance for non-network coverage and told me at the time of the appointment. I also think it is very deceptive that I didn't receive any bills until I had a significant amount of work done. Their continued statements on what was covered and to what level prevented me from knowing that I was going to have to pay HUNDREDS of dollars from my own pocket! This is a "buyer beware" scenario, check and double-check before having a procedure done with Spring Valley Dental! read more

Dr. Ames is so nice! I just visited this dentist for the first time, and I am very happy with my experience. I have not enjoyed going to dentists that are there to upsell and make a profit, and Dr. Ames and his team did nothing of the sort. I was not rushed and Dr. Ames was very friendly and thorough. The dental hygienist did a great job cleaning etc. and she was very sweet also. The things I didn't like with this dentist are that over time I had some billing issues with the front desk, which were frustrating. The office is also dated and everything looked quite dingy and dirty - inside the building and out. read more

I cannot rate the dentist, Dr. Ogi...but his appointment receptionist Danielle is extremely rude and unprofessional. We drove by this office and called to make an appt. I requested paperwork be sent to our home prior to our visit, which we never received. I was also asked to locate my dental insurance information and call the office back. That should of been a red flag. I received a phone call to confirm appointments in which I did not reply due to being unsure of wanting to keep appt. because of their lack of professionalism on the telephone. I called the day of the appointment to cancel and was threatened that I would be billed for missed visits. Danielle stated they needed a 24 hour notice in which I was never made aware of. Her bullying tactic and unprofessionalism makes me not want to be a patron at this facility. The dentists may be wonderful, but some of the staff need a lesson in customer service. read more
