This is the ideal place to meet up with a group in Brooklyn - it's 7 blocks from the Bedford L and 3 from the Nassau G, is massive with lots of big bench-style tables, has two full bars, and is reasonably priced. The crowd is mixed so you never feel out of place - basically, it's not too hip for a Williamsburg beer garden. I've been there about a dozen times now and have always enjoyed my experience. The beer selection is top notch, even according to my beer-snob friends. Also, the bartenders always let you try things before ordering a pint and are helpful if you describe your taste in beer are are up for trying something new. If you're trying to pregame, go for the whiskey shot/session beer deal for $6. The soft pretzels with sauces for dipping or the old fashioned sausages are great beer drinking food, and fairly priced for the quality as well. With a fireplace and Jenga, I see no reason to go elsewhere on a chill night out with friends! read more

I like this place very much. It feels cozy even though it is huge. They have an amazing array of beers. I love that the descriptions are on the menu. You feel less like an idiot going up to the bar to order. The food is good but limited to sausage sandwiches (they have a vegan on of course),fries and a kale salad. The sandwich I usually like especially the pretzel roll but last night it was dry and crumbly. The staff is always nice, there are people playing table games too. What a breathe of fresh air! I had been trying to find a restaurant that would accommodate my fiancé and a large group (18-30+) of our friends for his birthday - every restaurant I called turned us down, or provided us with minimum food & beverage prices ($1700, or $65/pp). I didn't feel comfortable asking people to come celebrate his birthday, but requiring they all pay "X" amount. So, I remember this place had just opened - and it was HUGE! I emailed them asking if we could reserve a group of tables -- and to my surprise I got an email in return, "no problem - see you tomorrow". What an easy experience! It ended up working out perfectly. I can't think of better place for a large group gathering. Last night we returned - just the two of us - and I have to add, that with a group or two people the place was awesome. The big huge windows were open, "fresh" air - and you can't beat the prices - for food and beverages. Not to mention, the staff is very friendly. The petty bartender was butt hurt that I did not tip him $2 for two bratwurst that I ordered and threatened to not server me. On top of that, he charged my credit card double and I had to open up a dispute with my credit card company. There are many other places in Brooklyn that serve beer and have games, I would suggest looking elsewhere. read more

Extremely poor customer service. Avoid ordering food from the right side bar. Once a favorite spot, but they have gone far downhill. After a gorgeous day outside, my mom and I stopped in for a quick bite. Not having been there before, my mother asked the female bartender "what kind of fries do you have?" The female bartenders response was, "fries are cooked potatoes." Again my mom asked, "Do you have any other fries?" And again the female bartender responded with a condescending tone and look, "french fries are cooked potatoes and no, no other fries." Really surprised, my mom asked "what is the sandwich with cold slaw?" The female bartenders next snotty response was, "This is the menu. (Pointing to the table) - I can't even begin to tell you which sandwich it is." Since when doesnt a bartender know whats on the menu? And wouldnt it have been nice for a new customer to receive recommendations? Again shocked and surprised, we didn't order anything else and left. Great way to lose customers with service like this. Following up with a call tomorrow. There are so many great spots in the neighborhood. No need to be spoken to so poorly. We will not be back and will stop referring clients as well. read more

I thought this place was pretty good, decent selection of beer on draft. Don't trust the waiters or staff however. Been there several times, always over priced, always rude. Last time spent a whole day with a a group of 5 people, spent around $400 and didn't move from our spot. 2 pairs of designer sunglasses magically disappeared from our group. No courtesy "let's look at cameras" or any type of appreciation for the problem. Staff member even told me to F off and asked to fight outside... avoid at all cost, get a bratwurst for $1 in Germany instead of this overpriced, self entitled staff, ripoff joint. The young, tall blonde worker behind the bar to the right of where you pickup your food should be fired. I ordered food and they gave me a ticket to pickup the food. Later I thought I misplaced the ticket so I asked the woman behind the bar if I can get a new ticket. Right after I asked this I found the ticket in my wallet. Once I showed her that I found the ticket and there was no need to print a new one she went on a curse filled tirade on me. There was absolutely no need for this. I was not doing anything wrong, I wasn't drunk or anything. I can see this justified if I was acting crazy and drunk and harassing people or something. I was literally in the establishment for about 10 mins (I just came in ordered my first and only beer of the night, and a sausage). If they hire people like this, who are totally not fit to work in a customer facing environment, I do not trust their judgement in regards to anything else. read more

I hate to be harsh, but 1) this place wasn't really necessary... there are plenty of places to get the SAME German and Czech beers. If they wanted to be a beer destination, they could get a bit more creative. 2) the staff (some to be fair) were absolutely clueless and there was no plan at all to manage the table service. 3) the woman that helped me at the bar was terribly grumpy and never received training on how to pour a draught beer correctly. This is one of my favorite spots and I've been coming here for years! It's a huge space but with a fireplace in the Winter and open windows in the Summer it always feels welcoming and comfortable. The bartenders are fun, friendly and even when it's busy will find time to answer questions and share their (knowledgeable) opinions of the many drafts on tap. What stands out about Spritzenhaus is its flexibility. If you're looking for a place to catch up with an old friend, it's no problem to find an out of the way table where you can chat. While if you want to invite your whole office it's easy to party in a large group. I've even come here several times during the day to work on my laptop when I needed a place to post up in the neighborhood. Bottom line, if you're looking for a place to chill with consistent quality -drink, food, service and atmosphere- throughout, this is it. read more

Pick the right time to go and this place is perfect. You can pretty much figure out when the strollers and birthday parties come out in full force, so I prefer to go during down times. Monday night? Empty seats by fireplace. Late Sunday? Benches outside are ours. I always have a good time even in peak times on Saturdays, you just have to be prepared for the noise level which for some reason can be a bit much there. I love that they take cards, swipe'em and give them right back. Something about it makes closing out soooo much more customer friendly - wish all places did that. Probably don't go here for the hard stuff. I ordered a revolver of SoCo Lime and the bartender gave me the stink-eye. Momentarily. then we had a laugh about my liver's ability to survive in formaldehyde. They're a great bunch of guys over there and the atmosphere is very friendly, if a bit overly-hipster (if that affects your opinion of a place). We were a party of eight and had a great time there mid-September. Long tables, plenty of room and not boisterous at all. Loved this place! We stopped here after my friend's wedding in L.I.C. for a nightcap and some snacks. The crowd was laid back and gasp-we found a picnic bench table to seat our group. I ordered my go to flavored vodka drink, a white wine carafe, and some beers. Tab was $ 72 before tip. The groom bought some soft pretzels and french fries with dipping sauces. I was near brown out from the open bar at the wedding but those fries and pretzel were some of the best I have ever had! There wasn't a cover which is awesome and the bouncer was friendly. Spritzenhaus may be one of the most misunderstood drinking establishments in the better borough of Brooklyn, by both its customers and owners. Contrary to recent reviews, Spritzenhaus has a solid draft and beer selection, more comprehensive and eclectic than the more popular Bohemian Beer Hall and Studio Square in Queens, Berry Park in Brooklyn, and Loreley in Manhattan. German lagers are the focus point of the "Spritzen" in Spritzenhaus: besides your Weihenstephaners Weizen, Spatens Pils, and Goffel Kolsch on tap, there is Hofstetten Kubelbier Kellerbier, Einbecker Mai-Ur-Bock, and Schlenkerla Marzen, selections only available at dedicated beer programs at restaurants. The Teutonic-ness further extends to their German bottle list, with hard-to-find stateside labels like Arcobrau, Reltberger Kloster, and Schoenramer making appearances in several beer styles. If you decide to ante up, there are some stars (albeit pricey ones) on the beer menu: Del Borgo Reale ($38), Etienne Dupont Bouche Brut de Normandie ($38), Saint Bon de Chien Biere de Garde ($55). What Spritzenhaus gets fundamentally wrong is its connection to its neighborhood. A 6,000 sq. ft., Keith McNally-esque bierhall couldn't help but be looked at with skepticism by the Greenpoint locals, despite the obvious effort put into the project. Most popular (not necessarily equatable with good) beer halls have built their locations with their neighborhood demographics in mind: Studio Square reflects the aspirant douchiness of Long Island City, Bohemian Beer Hall embodies the Eastern European history of Queens, and Berry Park and Radegast capture the lo-fi, communal drinking of Greenpoint and Williamsburg. In terms of the owners, what lead them to plonk money into a project where there are already two other fairly decent competitors in the area is beyond me. Spritzenhaus will definitely not serve as Harvard Business School case study material anytime soon. Unfortunately, Spritzenhaus will be remembered not for its aspiring German beer program, but a wary reminder of the most important tenet of Real Estate 101: choose your location carefully. read more

This place was built up to be way better than it is. Terrible bartenders! It's okay to be overwhelmed, just having opened, but running out of things left and right, and being completely rude to the people who are paying you is out of line. I went with large group of friends, and every one of us had a terrible interaction with the staff here. At one point, the bartender had a meltdown, accusing a friend of catching an attitude and proceeding to call her a bitch repeatedly. And it wasn't just one of the bartenders having a bad night, it was consistently awful service. I would not go back and give my money to these folks, unless they get friendlier staff who know how to make something as simple as a vodka soda! read more

This place is tragic. Take hipsters: privileged, think their down cause they pretend to be. Marinate them in personality revealing alcohol. Simmer in a room with loads and loads of the same obnoxious, behind sniffing behavior. And allow several rounds of this to bring it to a boil. One night of this was enough for me thank you. But I've had nothing but good experiences here, it's never too crowded to sit since it's so big, and it's better than Berry Park (more beers, better looking). 1 star because that's the lowest possible, and because I used to really like this place. Their "reservation" policy is a joke. Keeping someone's table vacant for 45 minutes after the party does not show up (not a single member of the party), during a very crowded Saturday night, is ridiculous. We were told by a bartender that this is the policy, and took the table after the 45 minutes. The people then show up and try to get their table back through verbal and sexual harassment, and when we try to get the manager involved, a bouncer makes us vacate the table we rightfully claimed. Terrible service, and awful clientele. I will not give them my business again. Worth it to go to Radegast or another great bar nearby like Berry Park. read more
