Single error was not including the ketchup he requested, which I share only in the interest of transparency. I mean, in my house ketchup is to make mid to poor fries tolerable and Hat Creek's sweet potato fries are great. Their good service and quality groceries continue, so will our visits will too.

I have been a loyal customer since the early 2000s. This restaurant used to be one of the highlights in town. Things started going downhill a few years back. The price went up. The potatoes got smaller. They started adding things to the menu to try to stay a float. As these things compounded, we went from visiting several times a month to just a few time a year. Upon returning, I was immediately reminded why we stopped going all together. The staff was mediocre at best. The portions are small, the price is high, and the flavor is just not there anymore. The potatoe was prepared, and the wrong ad was dry. I politely asked for a little extra butter, not even complaining about the food quality, and was told it would cost an additional 47 cents. Are you serious. I asked the guy if he was really going to charge a credit card 47 cents. After a few seconds, I just said forget it. It's not good practice to loose long time customers over a scoop of butter but I am sure in this town the attitude is we will have a fresh set of suckes next semester so why keep the locals happy. I am still rating 2 stars since there is a sense of nostalgia as I remember what this place was many years ago. read more

My wife and I would spend our weekends traveling the State hitting as many of the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQs that we could. One Saturday a few years ago we ate at 5 different Texas BBQ restaurants - I'm not kidding. And I have never once during this time had a meal I didn't enjoy - until tonight. I'm not going to jump off the deep end and say the food was bad, it wasn't. Except for my iced tea which was terrible. I spent a year in New Jersey where they serve tea as dark as coffee with a taste that makes your head snap back. This tea was just like that. Texas tea is a light brown color, not black. Needless to say, after one sip I didn't finish it. The BBQ beans are definitely not Texas style. They were watery and sweet, and not very appetizing in my opinion. Definitely different than any other bbq beans you'll find in Texas where pinto beans are typically served with BBQ. The green beans were under cooked and tough. The corn needed a truck load of salt and pepper. Now to the meat. My brisket, sausage, ribs, and pulled pork were all OK, not horrible, but nothing to get excited about either. The star of the show was the banana pudding which was the only item we ordered that could potentially motivate me to return, which I probably won't do. I assume the pudding was homemade and it was definitely tasty. You've probably seen the pictures of the facility. It's basically a small store front where you walk inside and the ordering counter is immediately inside the door just one step away. There is no seating inside. The outdoor patio on the front of the building has 4 or 5 rickety tables with a couple of "indoor tvs" that are hung on the roof supports. Because they are indoor and not outdoor TVs, unless it's pitch dark outside the screens will be washed out and you won't be able to see anything. There are two tables on the patio on the backside of the building and we initially attempted to use them so we could sit in the shade and not in the blast of the setting sun that covered the front of the building. Unfortunately, these two tables and their chairs had not been cleaned for a millennia and were covered with a bunch of sticky crap that had blown off the nearby trees and parking lot. I'm going to be extremely generous and award a score of three because the meat is disappointingly average but not terrible, and because it hurts me to disparage a small family business. But this very easily could have been a 2 star score. And considering there are a boat load of great BBQ options within 10 miles, I can see no reason to visit here again in the future.
